These frivolous lawsuits are a waste of time and money. Congratulations Ed Sheeran!
How much you want to bet he'll think twice about his next song. It's not frivolous it's a shout out to all these no talented artists. 💯
@@sunshine9717 Get real.
You say it like its your time and money.
@@dreadlegend7365 Oh that’s not what he said
@Hush Money You damn right! You need me to say it louder. Bring it on...💯
That four chord progression is so common its listed in books on how to write songs , I have used it writing my songs and I write grunge type stuff. Ed is awesome, noway a guy with his talent steals a song, none.
A songwriter who uses these common chord progressions is obviously less creative than a songwriter who comes up with something uncommon. Both Marvin Gaye and Ed Sheehan use pretty much the same common chord progression with the same number of beats per chord and similar tempo. These chord progressions form the basis of both songs. The drum beat and basslines are also very similar. So these elements are the pre-made canvas upon which to create you own melody and lyrics. Songwriters who do this are actually writing less (being less creating and doing less creating) than songwriters who choose more unique chord progressions. Take the Mona Lisa, change her hair color and fingernail color change a couple things in the background and there you go. No copyright infringement. Steal without "stealing." Thank you Leonardo for doing the heavy lifting so I can profit.
Great news! I believe copyrights should be protected always, but some of these claims are just ridiculous. I sure thought this one was.
I agree. I have loved Marin Gay's music all my life and a couple of cd's of his. I did not think Ed's new song had anything that I heard that was Marvin's song. First off, no one could ever replace Marvin Gaye or his music.
Its just because his team and himself have done this before multiple times. This time he just got out of it lucky. He tried to rip-off waterfalls by Tlc and got sued successfully because he didn’t pay the original writers or even notify/ask if he could sample it.
@@jors3825: Whose team are you talking about, who did this sort of thing before? Marvin Gaye's team?
@The Crimson Cure tells the truth about Black Women : Oh, bullshit. Find a real cure for whatever is wrong with you.
@@TheCrimsonCuretellsthetruthabo Nah. That victim card is getting old.
Everyone always wants something free in life. Thank you jury. So tired of the give me this mentality
What the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with your pathetic "give me free" bull crap. This is nothing but copyright infringements that the jury did not find. GO BACK TO YOUR MAGA TRAILER... dear
You would think Marvin's co writer would understand music better. What a greedy grifter
*Why do you think they loot instead of working hard?*
@@thehoardedgrotto8521 It was not the talented co-writer... it was the money grubbing descendants. 😎
SAYING IT OUT LOUD, seems to be a desperate money grab, and justice has been done !
Ed, your grandmother is proudly watching over you. I'm very sorry that you had to miss celebrating her life with your family. Hugs
B 31 I'm a 58yr old black man who can talk about music in any era and I'm embarrassed for Ed Sheeran for this blatant money grab I have listened to this song numerous times and still trying to figure out
where in his song did it resemble marvin guy's let's get it on. Some1 owes Ed Sheeran an apology.😅
MOBEY GRAB GONE WRONG
@@leonardomoore1868 I want to personally thank you for your support.
He doesn't deserve to be a billionaire, the Beatles do!
@The Crimson Cure tells the truth about Black Women Get over yourself. Ed music is fabulous. Crump is a disgusting A. Hole
@@leonardomoore1868 I agree, likely a shyster lawyer pushing it along, so happy that they didn't succeed.
Marvin Gaye was amazing, and I grew up listening to him, but these gold diggers and their lawsuits are tarnishing that legacy. Way to go Ed!
It wasn't Marvin's family it was the family of the Ed Townsend who co produced and co-wrote "let's get it on."
@@Kanellosproductions they didn't say it was Marvin gayes family. They said gold diggers damage his legacy with this.
@@Kanellosproductions Gaye's family sued Pharrell Williams years ago on a different but similar lawsuit, using pretty much the same arguments that were used here. Unfortunately, they won that lawsuit.
@krio unfortunately? They were right and a jury concurred.
No
This was a ridiculous lawsuit. There are so many songs in the world and only so many chords
Judges need to stop taking these cases unless there's note for note proof on paper before it goes to trial or else it's just going to waste everyones time
This was a classic failed attempted black on white robbery!
@@treasuretrailswhat ?? 😂
@@Somebody-Come-Look-At-This Not sure if @treasuretrails is being funny or serious, but the entire point Ben Crump was trying to make was that it was white-on-black theft.
AND 💰
yea it was a lose lose for everyone.
Who else rolled their eyes when race was mentioned?
Common sense prevails, well done Ed
Apparently the Marvin Gaye side doesn't understand music theory.
The jury got it right....
Carry on Ed Sheeran...
🎶🎸🎵🎙️
Do what you do best!! 💗
The chord progression copyright issue also stem from the common songs such as Mary had a little lamb and Twinkle Twinkle little star. A court ruled that common songs like above and Happy Birthday could not be considered copyright issues. Now, with this case being done. Would the same be said from drum patterns and instruments when 808’s are used? That would be the next topic of discussion.
727's man....
The family needs to stop suing white musicians who use similar cords! This same family sued for blurred lines and won $7.5 million, yet they continue to want more and more money. Suing because Ed used similar 4 cords, is beyond ridiculous and delusional! Anything to try and grab money for a song they didn’t even write, they want use their loved ones work to try and get easy money. So glad Ed won! Maybe this will help wake up the money hungry family members and force them to face reality, not everything in the world revolves around race, and it was disgusting that they tried to drag that into this trial too. 🙄
Wonderful!!! Not guilty!!! It did not sound alike at ALLLL!!!! THANK YOU jurers!!!!!!!! It would have been tragic, if he gave up making music. His songs are beautiful!! So glad he was found NOT GUILTY!!! GREAT FOR YOU, Ed!!!!! ❤❤😊
Yes it sounds alike but as they said it's a common chord progression.
EXACTLY 💯
Linda Martinka love MG and he's rolling in his grave for this nonsense. Also I'm black so plz people don't try and pull the race card.
@@carolapostolos8929 just stop the CAP!
My boy Eddy! Forgot all about this with all the trouble in the world. But this is good news. 🎉❤
Counter sue !! they tried to destroy his image. He was also forced to defend himself wich included spending $. Lastly his mental health was challenged , we know this when we said ," I will no longer make music". That right there is a defeated man. Hope he moves on from this as soon as possible.
Plus he lost his best friend as well 😢
Being in the art industry comes at the cost of suffering usually. Artists are all just pawns for society to mess around with most of the time - even if the majority of people actually enjoy that artist's work. Of course, that doesn't mean what he must be feeling right now is invalid. But, it shouldn't surprise anyone that this happened to him, or anyone in this industry. Being a musician is nothing to be jealous of - unless it's something you want to do.
I am glad he was able to defeat this lawsuit
Anyone in our industry clearly know that! Ed is a very upstanding young man and extremely talented! Im so over the other cocked people in our industry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No way does it sound remotely like Marvin's music! He's loved by all in our industry and unlike many ungrateful ones in it as well!
Your industry? 😂
@@VascoZaharra people who make and market music are part of the music industry goofy

Thank u. .Black folks need to.get over themselves. And I'm Black
It used to be that "imitation was the sincerest form of flattery" - the best compliment." I think too many people take offense to music written and loved instead of enjoying all the music being created.
He should sue for his Attorney fees.
Nice, as my guitar teacher told me, no matter what you play or think you've created, it's already been played.!!!
Exactly 💯
My 6 year old comes up with some pretty original stuff that no one wants to hear, and I'm fairly certain no one has ever played those combinations of dissonant notes in that order before.
@@steveanimatrix3887 you’d be surprised. u haven’t heard me play
So Cultural Appropriation means I can't listen to Marvin Gaye or does that mean I can't sing along to Marvin Gaye? I'm really concerned because I don't want to offend anyone by listening or singing along to Marvin Gaye. If Prince and myself grew up 20 miles from each other, does that mean we are a part of the same culture or because Prince is black and I'm white we have different cultures?
The world is sick,mate . I feel you . Too much b.s.
@@gostodemaisdaroca4052 Seriously I grew up in the 70's listening to Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5 and Led Zeppelin. In H.S. my senior year I discovered Prince and when he moved to the suburb I lived in I would see him at the grocery store I worked at. We grew up near each other. Our dads worked at the same company. Prince is as much a part of my culture as Bob Dylan and Etta James and Ian Curtis.
I am thinking if they decide to give every black person a check because their ancestors were slaves that there's going to be alot of people identifying as black and what about the Indians, how are they going to compensate them. Some people have lost their way and it's destroying our beautiful nation
@@jackstraw6760 Agree. Isn’t it just American culture? And hasn’t the black community borrowed elements and influences of other countries and cultures? Why is the appreciation allowed one way, but not the other? This reminds me of when Beyoncé’s fans claimed Taylor Swift stole the use of drums in a music video because they said drumming originated in Africa. But drumming is seen in the history of so many cultures hundreds of years before they even knew Africa existed.
@@bpxl53yewz29 American culture is a melting pot of everything from everywhere.
Ed Sheeran should file a counter suit for a huge amount of money for defamation and character assassination.
I'm black and I have to admit his song and Marvin Gaye's song sound nothing alike I don't understand how this lawsuit came about
This is awesome news. If Ed Sheeran lost damn the amount of lawsuits that followed would be staggeringly huge.
Good for him ⭐️
Thank god, this would have had terrible implications for all creatives going forward!
I listened to both songs 5 times and to me they didn’t sound the same.
My husband and I both listened to it over and over again and neither one of us could hear that they sounded the same.
There is no basis for the case. No racial, no copyrighting. Anything. The only thing in this case is the greed of Townsend's family. They see dollar sign and thought they could get some money for free.
That Bublé money must been getting low that they had to try and strike again for a quick cash grab 💰
congratulations to Ed Sheeran!
99 percent of popular songs since the beginning of music sound the same with almost always having same exact chord progressions and phrasing. What about all those millions of lawsuits?
Glad you won Ed. 😊
I think frivolous lawsuits should be made a serious crime
Such a complete waste of time for the court, judge, jury, Ed and lawyers.
I'm sooo happy for him
can you imagine if the copyright infringement case had been lost? I would bet every Marvin Gaye song would be in violation since there are many many songs copyrighted using those structures long before Marvin Gaye was born roflmao. Millions of songs would be in violation
So happy for him. Marvin Gaye died so many years ago. It shameful whoever started the lawsuit did so
You dont even need a musicians ear to be able to tell those 2 songs dont sound the slightest similar
I had to listen to both songs now. You sure need a musical ear to tell the similarity.
They do sound similar instrumentally, but of course not similar enough to the point where Ed should have been taken to court
So awesome the jury got it correct!
That's the breaks Gaye & Townsend families, I just didn't see anything wrong the songwriter did.
Justice. ❤
I'm happy for Ed, and yeah... sometimes talented people come up with similar ideas (in this case, chord progressions)
On another note though, am I wrong for thinking that Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" sounds very similar to Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World"? 😅
What a joke - this Gaye management people shows their greed. About time they were wrong…
its isnt gaye family its townsend family
Justice!!!! Poor Ed didnt deserve the stress but God and Marvin are smiling today as justice was served. Pretty sure Marvin doesnt want to see music ruined forever.
Love Ed great music. Good he was not liable for infringement. Just maybe i will have my hearing checked because the music in Thinking Out Loud and Let's Get It On did not sound exactly the same to me 😊
That’s like saying Mozart should sue 🤦🏾♀️
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I’m really happy for the outcome- I never ever thought about Marvin Gaye’s music as many times as I’ve heard this popular song crafted by Mr. Ed Sheeran. It’s a beautiful song. Thank you Mr. Sheeran
Congratulations to you and Ed prayers and everything positive for you and your wife, and what you’re going through. This shows Justice does prevail. That is the first and most favorite song of mine because it’s dear to my heart. As my grandson was a baby. He would go to sleep with that song. And it’s a lot of wonderful memories with that song for us
Leave this man alone 😅
Good news to me, Ed Sheeran did not copyright infringement to Marvin Gaye. "Let's Get It On" with Ed Sheeran music 🎶 "Thinking Out Loud" totally different sounds ,different beats, and different rhythms, in my opinion, but not the same music at all!!!🤔🤔🤔
I'm glad to hear this.
Good because talent has similarities, don't know how but it happens 10 times in a 100 000
I bet the cord progression song which was played in court was NOT from UK musicians, but rather Aussies "Axis of Awesome - 4 Chords".
Already knew this case was in the bag. It was a stupid lawsuit.
Still good people left in the world❤❤❤
Thanks God this nightmare is over, he is such a great kid, he did not deserve this humiliation, let's...get it on and let only music win above all
Thank god!!! That was ridiculous
I never realized that this could come to trial and that the the defendant had to come to the USA to deal with this. Is this the same internationally?
Couldn’t one just continue to get subpoenaed to every country in the world over a song? That’s kinda crazy to think about. Even if you don’t win. If they have to stop what they are doing to go to all the court appearances that itself could ruin a career
Two songs that ARE almost identical are Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix in the 60's and Rock Steady by Bad Company in the 70's. Lawsuit should be pursued!
He shouldn’t be found guilty. It’s absurd that anyone would think they are the same. Finally a good ending !
Happy for you Ed!
Thank goodness!
Now Ed can sue really big, defamation
Big time
The miusic industry needs some type of software like "Shazam", that reports how similar one piece of music is to another and what parts are covered by copyright and what parts are not.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am happy for Ed Sheeran. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👑🇿🇦
Ed Scheeran should counter sue them to shut them up.
To think Queen didn't sue him for Shape Of You/Another One Bites the Dust.
LoL, "Shape of You" does sound a bit similar to Sia's "Cheap Thrills" admittedly 😂
Makes Townsend’s family look like grifters at this point.
It’s like whenever a singer/celebrity is asked “who was your inspiration and/or why did you get into the love of playing & writing such great songs?” God forbid if you said “Marvin Gaye” someone will come out of the woodwork to sue you if they think Any of your songs that you write infringe on a family member 🤦🏼♀️
Oh gosh
I believe Gaye estate made some $$$$$$ suing Thicke\Pharrell's hit Blurred Lines some 12 years ago. There they go again. Its like if Celia Cruz estate were to sue other Caribe artists over the use of regeton tempo but the difference is the Cruz estate can't politicize.
Good for him!!! It sounds nothing like Marvin Gay stuff.....
I’m so glad! the older the music composers business can find anynew music that has not been new to the music industry.
So sweet of Ed to play the guitar afterwards
YES! Way to go Ed! There are only so many cord progressions!!!
I've been listening to music 🎶 for decades and I think Marvin Gaye album What's going on is atop 10, album of all time. I'm also a disciple of Motown USA, but Ed Sheeran did not copy right Let's Get On none what so ever.
His song sounds nothing like Marvin Gaye’s song! It was a ridiculous lawsuit! They should make the Townsend family pay for all the court expenses!!!
Glad this was chucked out 👍🏼
A person doesn't get a own a series of notes that make sounds!
Oh yes they do. Just like an author can owns words that have been spoken before.
Great 👍 just what everyone was waiting on 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 keep making music ed 🎉
Thankfully the jury was SMART enough to recognize the songs are not nearly the same at all! It had NOTHING to do with COLOR! Geezus the two songs were so damn different.
Great news that's awesome❤❤❤❤
This verdict is not surprising
Congrats Ed! ❤
Allow artists to be inspired & further create.
I honestly couldn't see the similarities between the two songs. It's ridiculous that sheeran needed to prove this in court. money grab of the heirs of the late gaye and nothing more. They aren't content feeding off the royalty fees of marvin gaye songs. They should be sued for wasting people's time and money.
Great to see Ben Crump, the race baiter, lose this case. Great job BEN CRUMP!!!
I was reading and listening not even close
Meanwhile I'm thinkin OUT LOUD...LLMV❤🤟🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Good on you Ed even if I don't like your music.
Jury made the right decision.
This makes me happy, he would have quit music. Whew I never thought he did, but you just never know in court. Its a good day people
This is equivalent to Ramen vs Pasta. Both are noodles but you can't sue someone for it because if that was the case then everyone owes the Chinese royalties because they were the first to create it. Thousands of songs uses those same 4 chords. Most music genres wouldn't exist without those 4 chords
Thank god
Yessssss
Please tell me that the accusers are being held responsible for this circus, otherwise they will keep bringing these unjustified lawsuits. At least cover the accused artist's legal fees and economic compensation for all his time and energy wasted in their claim. Maybe that would discourage these music inheritors/buyers (who aren't even the ones to create that music in the first place! hence don't know much about music composition) would stop bringing further copyright claims.
I cannot believe the race card was brought up 2:27
