  • Keeping more than 1 leopard gecko in the same enclosure is often argued about... everywhere. Personally, I have successfully kept female leopard geckos together with no problems. However, after experiencing this myself, I've realized it's easier, safer and more beneficial to the animals and myself when housed by themselves. Today, I go into the details of why I believe this is the case!

    i had 2 females together for a year (they were fine) then one started bullying the other.... its just not worth it.. it took about 6 months for the dominated one to regain her confidence... thankfully they're all fine now in separate enclosures. i would always advise against housing together because although mine were fine for about a year its almost inevitable one will dominate the other.

    when it comes to geckos in captivity, it seems like cost is another issue that people think about, because a whole other enclosure is twice the cost, but i always have to tell people if you want double the animal you really need to expect double the cost anyways. that, and people tend to project human emotion onto their reptiles, saying they "look lonely" and stuff like that, not really realizing that reptiles don't work like people. for the most part they're not social, if anything it's like having a roommate who sometimes says hi to you

    • @Anthony-fo8no

      @@Anthony-fo8no so do u always dig to reply to comments posted three years ago or is it just something u did special for me. either way, i would be interested in hearing more about the topic if there is actually new valid scientific literature about it - but still, you have to remember that social animals in nature choose their own groups and have the ability to leave, and the ones we keep in captivity do not have this agency and it'll never truly replicate a wild social group for that reason. in a lot of captive wildlife facilities, issues come up because some individuals do not get along, like being stuck with a shitty roommate indefinitely in real life. btw in this case it'd be dominant, not dominate

    I kept 3 females in one 55 gallon tall tank with a bi-level. basically a second and third floor. I ended up doing this because I had adopted a gecko from a pet store that had been there for months. Nobody would buy her because she was "ugly." She was a Murphey's patternless being marketed as a snow leopard. So I took her home and gave her a lovely little set up and waited a few weeks to handle her to avoid stress, but I noticed a few things. First, she was MUCH older than a gecko is normally adopted--a fully grown adult. Second, she was all ready very hand tame and was honestly an absolute treat to handle her. Not shy one bit and would ask to be held. But, Third and saddest, she was losing energy and slowly refusing to eat, eventually refusing to leave her hide. Basically just kinda flopped on the floor under her log and wouldn't move. Vet said she was fine and to wait it out. But then it hit me; she had lived in a pet store for her entire life up until we adopted her with other, baby geckos! So the following year, I went back to this pet store and go figure, they had two on the euthanization list. So, like the sucker I am, I took them for the 2 cent fee and brought them home. After 2 months of quarantine and side-to-side tanks, I did the first introduction. After several months, Everyone's physical and mental health started to improve! However, a dominate female did immerge and she had to be housed separately. She was okay with that, since she was healthy and highly territorial, all she really cared about was dinner. But yes, Housing several together is a lot of work. I fed each separately and luckily, the oldest had potty trained the kids, so each went in their own corner, tank cleaning was a circus, the gecko bath-house always had THE LONGEST LINES! But some do benefit from cohabitation and it likely saved Miss Ishii.

    There's just really no benefit in general. I think for most people getting two or more stems from thinking that one animal must always get lonely as they themselves would and a lack of research. I wouldn't take the chances, too much possible stress for both me and the animals involved. Really great video!

    I have three females living together. They have a LOT of hides and all three of them happen to pace themselves pretty well when they eat and none of them hog much. Two of them were raised together by their previous owner and were already comfortable with each other. The third I got later and kept her by herself for a while. I would out her in the other's tank every now and then for a few minutes at a time, monitoring them to make sure there was no nipping. One of my first two was completely fine and chill and really doesn't care about anything. The other gave her a few looks in the beginning as if to say "WHO ARE YOU AND WHY ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE!?" but eventually got used to her. Once I thought it was safe, I housed her with the other two. I plan on upgrading them to an even bigger tank in the future and make even making it "two stories" by building a platform that goes across the length of the cage and having a ramp to walk up to it. I'm sure they'll appreciate the extra hides. I use a ceramic heat lamp for their heat source, but if I upgraded them like I want to, I'd probably also add a heating pad underneath so that there is a nice warm spot on both the upper and lower level of the tank.
    I'm lucky. My three never fight. I do have an extra tank in storage though, in case there's ever any problems.

I would never put together two adults that had grown up alone. They were near death when I adopted them from petco years ago, so one of them has pretty bad vision and may accidentally bite my hand or the other’s tail during feeding, but the bite is very soft and neither have ever gotten hurt. I also kept a closer eye on their attitude as they became older in case things changed, but they never did.

    Just wanna say same applies to crested geckos!
    Also don’t try to mix different species, it can be done, in huge enclosures with certain species by very experienced keepers. No gargs and cresties, no leos and fat-tails, none of that. Always really research them before housing them together. The only cohab I’m doing is with two female cresties, I’ve been observing them and see no signs of dominance or stress, in fact they seem to like each other. They sleep together, eat together, jump around together, one could argue that perhaps the temperature is just right in that hide, or the gecko hasn’t found the other dish of food, but at the very least they don’t avoid each other. I’ve got lots of visual barriers, loads of hides, and feed them separately though oftentimes the other will join in on the noms. I always have spare tanks, but I don’t see any reason to separate them, watching each other interact and do things together is interesting, and I keep the boys across the room from the girls to avoid any extreme hormonal stuff from going on.

    when you’re keeping a solitary animal in captivity, you should do right by it. meaning NOT letting them meet NOT cohabiting them and NOT taking them out together. it causes a lot of unnecessary stress and ends very badly in most cases. even with females, there’s dominance, bullying, and stress issues.

    Another tip for keeping geckos together, would be to get as big of an enclosure as possible. Mine are in a 3 ft by 2 ft by 2ft (100x50x50 cm) enclosure, and they are doing just fine. I always tweezer-feed them, so that both of them get enough food. The terrarium has 12 hides in total, but they only ever use 3 or 4 of them. They have bitten each other once, but then got along again. They also like to sleep in the same hide, with one resting their head on the back of the other gecko and such. The hide is big enough for them both to comfortably nap in, and they look very laid back, so I don’t think they’re competing.

    I keep 2 females leos in a 40 breeder, they have 5 hides plus plants and branches and all kinds of stuff. To me it looks amazing having them in a bug set up. They are active and fun to watch, they eat together and sleep together. But they also have certain hides they each prefer which is interesting. With a big tank i’m able to give them so much more activity than the general 10-20 gallon. :)

    • @ConfidentCritters
      @ConfidentCritters 6 років тому +1

      Fiona Shepley i appreciate your comment and concern, but i offer enough space and hides they can avoid each other, they rarely sleep together i noticed it more when they first were introduced, or when i had one hide over the heat pad rather than two like i do now. But i check them daily and they never show any signs of agitation such as tail wagging, i watch them very closely and if an issue ever does arise or i think it might then i will of course separate them. :)

They share their food and we have multiple hides but often times they even sleep together. This might just be me but after raising them together from a small age it seems like they get along just fine.

    Great video and you can apply this to the majority of reptiles. I tried housing my Mexican beaded lizards together and while no injuries occurred one animal got significantly bigger than the other. The smaller lizard would also regurgitate it's food sometimes 3 days after feeding and was extremely defensive. Once I separated them both are enjoying their enclosures more and have become much better eaters plus the defensiveness is gone!

    IMO 100% cohabiting leopard geckos is never a good idea. Why anyone would do it, beyond maybe experimenting to see for yourself like you did, is beyond me. There are no BENEFITS to cohabiting beyond the fact that you want to do it. Sure, two females can “get along” but they will never thrive like they would alone. They will always be more stressed than they would alone just because they’re always on edge, and it can cause them to snap at each other at any time. “Cuddling”, following each other, sharing hides, etc. are all “cute” things mammals do to other animals they like, but in reptiles they are signs of stress and aggression. Why would you put animals you love through that when it’s just as easy to keep them separate?
    As you touched on, you’d have to feed them separately every time you feed to make sure they get enough food. You meed a backup tank in case they do fight. It’s so much more difficult to Cohan than house separately.
    Even a 40 gallon wouldn’t be enough to house the proper amount of 6 decent hides and coverage + enrichment like climbing enough for even two geckos imo, and at that point why would you just not get separate enclosures? Idk I may be bias but any cohabiting situation I’ve ever experienced has always ended poorly, and I am very against it.

      I'm planning on getting them there own enclusures but for a kid with no paying job it will be a while so its more of a last option for me

    One thing that might make people want to House leos together is it makes it easier to keep track of tasks. I often think of what needs to happen in an individual enclosure vs each individual animal. Obvious, I make sure each individual animals has what they need but it might help mentally.

    • @gracthedestroyer9253
      @gracthedestroyer9253 6 років тому +1

      Animallover3541 Well in my opinion you should keep tack of the individual animal, because how do you know the food is being split evenly among the inhabitants, or if one is sick, etc as he touched on in the video. I think a close watch on all animals, not enclosures, is necessary even in known social species like Mourning geckos. Idk, the mentality of maintaining the tank as opposed to the inhabitants just isn’t for me I guess

    I rescued a male Leo who was housed with another male and when I got him, the last quarter of his tail was gone, along with all the tails on his front left foot. The toes might have been via stuck shed, but idk. As for the female Leo I have, she would never be able to be cohabbed. I put her and the male on my bed and the male was just wandering around, completely ignoring the female and the female just shot towards him and lunged at him, tail waving and all.
    However, I do think that babies can be cohabbed for a little bit. I’ve seen many a babies curled up together on the heating pad, completely calm around each other.

  • @anaos8870
    @anaos8870 5 років тому +3

    IMO I have mostly all of my geckos cohabiting, in groups of 3-4 (obviously only one male per group). And I've personally seen benefits from it i'll just say the two that i find are more relevant.
    1) We had a new female gecko, just a 3 month baby that spent more than a week by herself without eating enough for her age and size and not moving from here hide. Once we were sure she was otherwise healthy she was moved to another enclosure with 2 more females. After a couple of days she was eating like a champ and moving around at nighttime and hapier.
    2) We also have a dreamsickle who sometimes shows some enigma syndrom traits, housed alone those traits were much more notorious, leaving her stressed and a lot less able to eat. Housed with other geckos, she almost seems to not have a problem.
    Of course they are housed in big enclosures and more hides than geckos, but in my experience, if you do it correctly, cohabiting CAN (i'm not saying it happens always) bring some benefits.
    To not be biased, i should also say that we recieved a couple of geckos (male and female) that were housed together in a small space, an they both had injuries. However, the same couple is living now with another female in a much bigger space and they haven't fought again.

    I had got a leopard gecko. " giecko " from a pet store that didnt take care of them very well. Its been housed alone for about a month but at the store about 12 were,crammed,into one,rock all huddled ontop eachother. I figured since i have a 38x18 exo terra id,go get one of the others that my gecko was stuck with for who,knows how long. I have 2 of everything and,have noticed that my geckos do not wag tails at eachother and whenever they encounter eachother they sort of,just look at eachother for at modt like 30 seconds and then go,their,seperate ways. I was slightly worried at first as the one iv had went up and started licking the new geckos " Danu" tail then,body. But after a bit i noticed,it was just to get the new geckos,sent. It may even,remember it from the store. After this,every encounter,has been,chill. Keeping a close,eye on,them and,have a seperate enclosure,just in case. But do far very good id say. Both female, roughly same size with their overall body and lenghth but danus tail is pretty skinny from being at the pet store. Danu also eat first night in with giecko and geicko watched then,went back to sleep. Figured id post all this in case someone wants to hear from other peoples experiences

    I don’t even think the “potential” to keep them together should be even considered. Leopard geckos are solitary animals. They will get stressed out when kept together, no matter gender or how much they “get along”. Keep in mind it’s hard to realize what reptiles are feeling and thinking so what you see as them getting along could be them very stressed out. It’s way too much of a risk. There’s always a risk of fighting or even fatalities between the two. It just causes way too much unnecessary stress to both animals. If anyone reading this is considering doing this, please don’t. It’s very risky and stressful for the animals

    Here in Australia, we have very few contagious diseases that affect reptiles. Most are bacterial, parasites or a result of bad husbandry. My female is pretty sick with a respiratory infection and has been on antibiotics for the last 1.5 months and has stayed in the tank with the male as she seemed less stressed with him. He's perfectly healthy living with his sick counterpart... and she's been getting better ever since I put her back in with the male. Maybe it's just coincidence, I'm not sure.

However it seems similar to having any other two animals sharing the same space , even with dogs and cats(they do however have a higher success rate in pairs) there is always the strong possibility that if they dont grow up together they will fight or harm the other or simple might not like them later on
