Two seperate crowns were actually used during the coronation. The Crown of St. Edward the Confessor (Indeed the last king of the House of Wessex) is only used for the actual coronation ceremony and hasn't been used ever since that day. The crown you saw on Queen Elizabeth's head when she walked out was the Imperial State Crown. This crown is adorned with 2,901 precious stones, including the Cullinan II diamond, St Edward's Sapphire, the Stuart Sapphire, and the Black Prince's Ruby. The Cullinan II diamond (317.4 carats) was cut from the largest diamond ever found but is still considered one of the world's largest diamonds. Several other pieces of the Cullinan diamond can be found in other royal regalia including the largest one, Cullinan I (530.2 carats), which is set in the British Royal Sceptre.

@@AcesHighSphere That crown is so heavy they weren't sure if she should wear it in case it hurt her neck. In fact she doesn't wear it any more with her age as its so heavy, if you look at the latest parliament opening Nov 2019 its left on a cushion next to her. I believe they had to do weight training on her neck beforehand.

I remember listening to a story of how the diamond was cut. A specialist from the Netherlands was brought in to do it. He was so nervous at cutting it he feinted. It had to be a perfect cut. After the third day he managed to do it. The poor gentleman retired. He was never the same again.

    1. The Gold State Coach is primarily constructed out of wood and leather but its heavily gilded in rich gold. It was commisioned on the orders of King George III in 1760 and was completed in 1762. It weighs a massive 4 tons. Its height is 12 feet, and it is 24 feet long and extended. The sheer weight means it has to be pulled by a team of 8 horses and even then it can only go as fast as walking speed. It has been used at the coronation of every British monarch since George IV. The coach's great age, weight, and lack of manoeuvrability have limited its use to only the grandest of state occasions such as coronations, royal weddings, and the jubilees of a monarch.
    2. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe that hasn't abandonded the tradition of a coronation or enthronement ceremony. The English/British coronation ceremony has largerly remained unchanged for the past 1000 years.
    3. Every monarch derives their political legitimacy from God. Monarchs are, according to the ancient divine right of kings, basically appointed to rule their lands on God's behalf. The monarch is thus not subject to the will of his people, of the aristocracy, or of any other estate of the realm. It implies that only divine authority can judge an unjust monarch and that any attempt to depose, dethrone or restrict their powers runs contrary to God's will and may constitute a sacrilegious act. The monarch of the United Kingdom is also the Supreme Governor of the Church of England since Henry VIII's decision to split England from the authority of the Pope and Catholic Church in 1533. All of this helps to explain the heavy religious connotations in the coronation ceremony. This is the extremely simplified version by the way...
    4. At the time of her coronation Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of seven countries. In addition the United Kingdom she was also made Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka). If she was crowned a few years earlier she would've also been made Empress of India. She is currently the reigning monarch and head of state in 16 countries. These still include Australia, Canada and New Zealand, as well as several island nations in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean.

The queen has said that the Gold Coach has the most uncomfortable ride of any of the coaches she has to use.
The Queen is the Head of the Church of England. It is part of her duty. Any monarch who preferred another non Christian religion could therefore not be crowned king/queen and would be forced to abdicate. The Head of the Church of England thing happened when Henry the VIII was going through those 6 wives. The country was catholic but the pope wouldn't give Henry a divorce to marry another wife, so he rejected Papal rule made himself Head of the Church instead. Of course that meant he could divorce anyone he wanted. This title came and went for a few years as the kings and queens were protestant/catholic. Much torture and burning at the stake ensued if you didn't have the "right" religion. Everything finally settled down with the Protestant Church of England. Of which she and most of her predecessors since 1688 are the Head.

I wonder, however, how much it burns his britches hearing that Cadzilla will get the Queen title after all, esp since his Mom didn't even get officially named Princess AND what after what she did to Princess Diana. Of course, Charles was the one who was in a relationship then marriage, so the onus is even more-so on him, just as in any relationship with infidelity. On the other hand, he can choose to forgive both of them for his own peace of mind, esp since this would not have happened, his Mom WH gone on to a normal life with someone else (although he would't be here) if they did not consider Cazzilla damaged goods back then.

If she pushed Royal Prerogative, Archie would be raised in the UK, the other fictitious child was born in the US...and may have a case. She is also Queen of all of the UK's Overseas Territories and the Crown Dependencies of the Isles of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
She is Head of the Commonwealth and Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Protector of the Church of Scotland.
She is also the Head of the Armed Forces for each and every one of those countries - i.e. all the Royal Navies, Royal Air Forces and Armies.

As the monarch is the head of the church of England, they cannot follow another religion.
India and Pakistan were originally just Indian, when India got independence the country was split and Pakistan was born.
The monarchy of the UK contrary to popular belief still has more power than the Government. She is legally above the law and no bill or law can be passed without her assent, she also has the power to dissolve parliament, previous Kings gave done this in the UK, however the current Queen dissolved the Australian parliament in the 1970's. She also has the right to decline an elected Prime Minister.

The large wooden throne the Queen is sitting on is The Coronation Chair, known historically as St Edward's Chair or King Edward's Chair, is an ancient wooden chair on which British monarchs sit when they are invested with regalia and crowned at their coronations. It was commissioned in 1296 by King Edward I to contain the coronation stone of Scotland-known as the Stone of Destiny-which had been captured from the Scots who kept it at Scone Abbey. I saw this coach in the Royal Mews on a trip to England. It is massive and weighs so much that the team of horses can hardly move it. It also, apparently, has such bad suspension that it causes motion sickness😏

The Gold Coach is Gilded aka GOLD LEAF, is suspended by leather straps, it is an enclosed, eight-horse-drawn carriage used by the British Royal Family. Commissioned in 1760 by King George III, it was built in the London workshops of Samuel Butler. It was commissioned for £7,562. It was completed in 1762. It weighs in at 4 tons and is pulled by 8 specially trained horses. It is also the most uncomfortable to ride in.

St. Edward, is indeed Edward the Confessor, King of England from around 1042 to January 1066. The Queen has no role in government or in parliament. She has the right to warn, to be consulted by the Prime Minister and to encourage. She always signs (gives assent to) Bills passed by Parliament, thereby making them law. India, immediately after independence, became a republic, whereas Pakistan for a few years remained under the crown. Hence, in the early years of her reign, Queen Elizabeth was also the Queen of Pakistan. But then in 1956, Pakistan became a republic and The Queen was no longer the head of state. The coach weighs four tons and is 24 feet (7.3 m) long and 12 feet (3.7 m) high. It is gilded and features painted panels by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and rich gilded sculpture including three cherubs on the roof (representing England, Ireland and Scotland) and four tritons, one at each corner (representing Britain's imperial power). The body of the coach is slung by braces covered with Morocco leather and decorated with gilt buckles. The interior is lined with velvet and satin. The sculptor Sir Joseph Wilton produced the elaborate carvings on the coach. The roof supports three cherubs representing the union of England, Scotland and Ireland. They carry the Imperial Crown and hold the sword, sceptre and the badge representing Knighthood. The branches of eight gilded palm trees frame the roof. Four corner trees rise from a lion's head and are decorated with symbols of Britain's victory in the Seven Years' War with France. The war was drawing to a close when the coach was built in 1762. Morocco leather straps support the body of the coach and are held by four Triton, mythical sea-gods with a man's head and a dolphin's tail. At the front wheels, the tritons seem to be using the straps to pull the coach. They are blowing conchs, trumpet-like shells to herald the arrival of the Monarch of the Ocean. Gilded dolphins hold in place the bar by which the coach is drawn, and the driver's foot board (no longer used) is in the shape of a scallop shell. The two tritons at the back carry imperial symbols, representing Britain's maritime traditions and status as a dominant sea power.[3]
The carvings give the Gold Coach the air of a triumphant chariot, reflecting England's powerful position in the world at the time.
The Gold State Coach is pulled by a team of eight horses wearing the Red Morocco harness. Originally driven by a coachman, the eight horses are now postilion-ridden in four pairs.[4] The coach is so heavy it can only be pulled at a walk.[1] The coach has (gilded) brakes, which are operated by the grooms.
As the coach is suspended from braces, it lacks more modern comfort. Modern coaches such as the Australian State Coach and the Diamond Jubilee State Coach have electric windows, heating and hydraulic stabilizers.
In the words of King William IV, a former naval officer, being driven in the Gold State Coach was like being on board a ship "tossing in a rough sea". Queen Victoria complained of the "distressing oscillation" of the cabin. She would often refuse to ride in the Gold State Coach. A later monarch, King George VI said that his journey from the palace to Westminster Abbey for his coronation was "one of the most uncomfortable rides I have ever had in my life".[5] Queen Elizabeth II, referred to her coronation journey in the coach as "horrible" and "not very comfortable", which is possibly why it was not used for her Diamond Jubilee, when she was aged 86, having previously featured in her Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations.[6]
King George VI had the coach overhauled after the Second World War to rubberize the iron-bound wheels. This would afford at least some comfort to the passengers.[1]
The coach is managed by four postilions, nine walking grooms (one of whom walks behind the coach), six footmen, and four Yeoman of the Guard carrying their long partisans. Eight of the grooms walk beside the horses. The more ornately dressed footmen walk beside the body of the coach. The postilions have to handle the horses when the animals are unruly, and they carry crooked walking-sticks to hold up the traces that may become slack when the coach is taking a corner.[7] The royal coachmen are traditionally clean-shaven. The horses are always Windsor Greys.

There was no 'live around the world' in 1953. It was shown live on BBC television but the only means of recording was by 'telecine', literally putting a film camera in front of a television set . The sound was recorded separately. Complex plans were made for colour film of the event to be processed and flown around the world by a fleet of specially commissioned aircraft so that the Commonwealth countries could see the coronation within a few hours. No doubt similar arrangement would have been made for the US and other countries. Television sets were still quite rare in Britain in 1953, and most people would only have seen 'highlights' at the cinema the following week. Most would not see the whole show on TV, in colour, until it was shown in 1977 as part of the silver jubilee celebrations.

Following Independence the new USA adopted the British three tier system of governance. Or be it that the monarch was replaced by a President selected by an electoral college. The House of Lords became the Senate selected by the State Assemblies and House of Commons became the House of Representatives. This with the familiar checks and balances.
However the USA locked its system into a written constitution and so still reflects the 18th century. Britain not having a written constitution has continued to modify the three tiers ensuring that the elected parliament actually governs.
Perhaps the most significant role for monarchy and the reason so many other countries (I think 15) have maintained the Queen as their Head of State is that simply by existing she prevents a self serving politician from getting the top job, so no chance of a dictatorship.

The power the monarchy has is totally symbolic, but to say symbolic is not to down play the power quite the contrary for it is through the symbolism that this power is able to reach so many of the masses (including any one simply observing this event it has a psychological impact on the subconsciousness hence transmitting its power into you, quite an act of real magic). The monarchy is a powerful meme and can draw people in to become its servants.

There are several more-than-symbolic items and events during a coronation: the first is that the people must acclaim the sovereign, as she factually rules by the consent of everyone in the kingdom.
That's been true since before there was a Britain or an England.
That guy in robes beside her bearing a sword is like a master-at-arms in a US court; he's there to keep order or even fight for the sovereign if there is an 'affray of arms'.
The ancient idea of a King's Champion.
When the sovereign is presented with the regalia, she takes on (sword) defence of the kingdom herself (command of the armed forces); then the Orb (globe with cross) rule over Great Britain and all it's possession around the world, and (Crown) the lifetime duty of ruling fairly and well all those lands.
After all this the Lords of the land must advance and be recognised, removing any lesser nobility symbols and replacing them if the sovereign nods.
The Lords Spiritual are the religious leaders and are confirmed in their positions, etc.
There's more to all of these, but that's the big stuff.

The Duke of Gloucester, Earl Marshall, senior family member, brother of The Queen's father, George VI, is on Prince Phillips's left. I watched ceremony on Grandma's TV, aged 13. Queen Salote of Tonga won over the people in her carriage, in the rain.

No, she was that age when crowned in June 53, she became Queen in February 1952, in that April (21st) she turned 26 and then in April 53 turned 27. On the day she became Queen ( Feb 52) Charles was 27 months old,Anne just 7 months.Just 21 months between them.

It's crazy to think that she is one of the only people in this video that is still alive today. Many of the older people will have been alive longer enough to also have seen the coronation of her uncle (Edward VIII), father (George VI), grandfather (George V) and great-grandfather (Edward VII) and would have witnessed the world wars and lived during the reign of Queen Victoria

My father was alive for the coronation of her father (her uncle was never crowned), lived through the war and was serving overseas when the Queen was crowned. He's still living, albeit in a nursing home now, and may yet live to see another coronation - he's only a few years younger than the queen.

The first King of All England was Alfred the Great in the 800s AD. The first king to rule the whole of Britain was his grandson Athelstan. The chair and crown were from King Edward the Confessor (also a saint) whose death in 1066 sparked the Norman Conquest. He was the king who build Westminster and its abbey, ie a Minster Church to the West of the ancient City of London.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Alfred the great the king of wessex? His grandson was the first king(in the video I had thought it was his son) but his grandson was the first king after wessex, east anglia, northumbria, and mercia were united into what is now England not all of Britain. Again, correct me if Im wrong but that is just what I thought.

@@AcesHighSphere yes you are right Alfred was only king of Wessex though he had influence in the other remaining Anglo Saxon kingdoms. His immediate successors were kings of England though the borders were different than they are today. The first monarch of all Britain and Ireland was James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland though some of the Plantagenet kings of England did claim overlordship of Scotland

@@pedanticradiator1491 Not quite immediate: Alfred's son, Edward the Elder was also only king of Wessex: it was his son Athelstan who is regarded as the first king of all England from 927 to 939 when there were no longer kings in Northumbria. The united England fell apart again after his death (more Vikings) but soon came together again permanently by the time of King Edgar who was the first king to be *crowned* king of all England, in 973.
