      Good luck- I felt immense sadness playing old tables in the new engine and its the first time Ive hovered over the refund button on Steam. My feeling is old tables no- new tables Yeah sorta- My Little Pony and Borderlands play okay- but have the nagging feeling they would be better in the FX3 engine. Cool video. Unfortunately this does a significant disservice to the quality of the newer full DMD's. Squishing them down to a 4:1 aspect hurts the look significantly in my opinion. Thank you for your time making this. I was really hoping Xpaddr would help eliminate the one issue I've had for several weeks; latency on the right flipper (left is fine) Unfortunately, even with Xpaddr, I still have that issue. ALP native tables run fine. I've tried innumerable tweaks recommended by videos; no luck, After weeks on the project, I think I'm going to throw in the towel. I hope someday AtGames adds some of the more popular tables to their catalog.

      @@WagnersTechTalk OK, I just tried that, no diff. What's really odd is that it's only the right flipper; left is fine. Even holding down the flipper is odd; it goes up and then back down, as though I released the flipper button. Also, when I use the keyboard shift keys as paddles, it (right flipper) works just fine. I'm tempted to order replacement buttons that advertise to be more responsive than the OEM. It's just odd that the ALP tables all work just fine. BTW, I have also tried a new USB cable.The PC is a Dell OptiPlex with Core I7-3770 4 core processor, 16 gb RAM, and an SSD. I added a GeForce RTX 2060 GPU

    John can you do a video on making videos? I’m being 100%honest here. Some things to learn like how to cut down some video and add it to a second video etc . I’m still using a iPhone camera and shooting everything in one full take. When I was an actor for all of 3 months , a director would love if you could shoot one continuous scene. But it doesn’t work so well when your trying to 1) work on a machine yourself and 2) also worrying about if the people can see what your doing etc. I know your busy but I can follow your tutorials . 😊

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  Рік тому

      I shoot all my video using a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Sure I do have other cameras that I use, when needed. I just prefer the image quality from my phone. The channel hasn't grown to a point where I would even consider an expensive $2-6k dedicated camera and honestly I don't know that I would use it if I had one. I don't know that I would be a good candidate to make a video on making videos. Years ago, I had started a project like that but never finished it. I record most everything without voice, then do a first rough-edit where the main scenes I want in the video are included/organized. Then I write a script around each scene and edit further with voice-overs. This is why I'm rarely on camera. I probably do things backassward lol. This doesn't work for every kind of content.

    Thank you so much for your instructional videos. They have been a great resource and I am very grateful. I am new to virtual pinball on the ALP. Started with FX steam and Xpadder (using your guide) on new build with specs well over required. Notice a small amount of flipper lag that is tough to get used to. Is that something that cannot be eliminated completely? Is there same slight lag with Pinup Popper? Thanks in advance.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  Рік тому

      Very welcome on the guides, great to hear they have been helpful to you! I think Pinball FX has just a little inherent lag. If you were to compare FX to FX3, you'll notice a difference in responsiveness (you can use the same xpadder profile for either). I've mentioned it to Zen but haven't heard back. It's not bad, but it is a bit noticeable. VPX/FP plays pretty well with the xpadder profile also.

    FYI it seems to work a bit better to use Steam Input rather then add more middleware. If your using joy-to-key or xpadder you end up in a world of hurt. A little bit of work and you can get a much better experience. Less to break, easier to ensure consistency across emulators and popper, and you already have all the tools needed to get the accelerators and other features working for you in emulators that support it.

I receive a lot of trouble-shooting questions for various pinball applications and the methods I discuss are those that have worked best for me with the least amount of setup difficulty for the end-user to get up and running. Hope that all makes sense.

      Hi Al, happy to hear it's just about there! My guess is that it's not something you missed/did wrong. Please see the first item here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alpfx/#Troubleshooting . I have seen where sometimes you press the VIBS Switch button after FX is loaded, the backglass+DMD won't show up or if you power off/on the ALP. Typically, if you exit FX and re-start it the backglass will appear after pressing "any key". But, if you already have FX running, you can also use the point above to force it to re-load. Hope that resolves the issue!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  Рік тому

      Hi Levi, thank you for your kind comments and for checking out the video! If it's occurring with FX and FX3, it very possibly may be the left flipper button itself. Mine has recently started acting up also (left flipper). I ordered a set of replacement buttons but haven't yet put them on ( link where I ordered: www.ebay.com/itm/392436810423 ). In my case, I can often power off the ALP for about 5 min, power it back on and it's fine. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be a little irritating.

      The DMD is small, the numbers in the guide match the outline around the artwork. If yours doesn't, maybe there was something missed. Also, you can easily change the values if you want to make the DMD larger.

    Your guides are so perfect and easy to understand. I have a weird situation going on. Xpadder works perfect for me, but when I have it running and using VPX and make the leaderboard and have to place my initials into the screen using either the left or right flipper to choose a letter it seems to skip. For example, I try and select the letter "B" and it jumps from "A" to "C". If I turn off Xpadder then I do not seem to have the issue at all. Any idea on how I could resolve this? I assume that there must be some confusion with VPX and Xpadder that is causing some issue. Not sure if in Xpadder I need to choose different mapping for Left and Right Flipper?

      Thank you very much! Make sure that you don't have any button mappings already made in VPX and/or running Joy2Key when Xpadder is running. Based on what you stated above, it sounds like there is another tool in the mix that is interfering with the Xpadder mapping?

It was unusable with j2k on my machine (FX3 was also fine here with j2k). j2k did not work well with FX and don't know why (mentioned in the video). However, xpadder was an option I came across, tried it and was a night-day difference (not perfect, but much better). Even FX3 was more responsive using xpadder. There may be some optimizations needed in FX itself to bring it up a bit. I have a few messages into Zen but haven't heard back yet. They have been very helpful and fully expect I'll hear back soon.

I had originally used JoyToKey but had realized lag in the response between pressing the flipper button and the flippers actually moving. Your video here pointed me towards Xpadder which I gladly purchased and installed. It solved the issue (THANKS!) and work(ed) perfectly up to around April/May 2023. But since about July 2023 I have a severe delay between pressing the button and the flipper moving. I even decreased the graphics quality but this didn't help. I do have Steam Deck content with FX3, VPX and FP which you can find here: wagnerstechtalk.com/sd-alp . I love my Steam Deck, it's about the only portable gaming device I use. Thanks John! Very helpful video, thanks for your time and efforts! I had this working using a mini pc, but the specs weren’t quite enough for smooth gameplay. Now i’m trying to use a recently acquired gaming laptop but running into trouble withe the displays. I get 3 displays, 1 to ALP OTG, 1 to Vibs, and the native laptop screen. This was awesome, but I am having one small problem. I am not getting sound from the cabinet after following this setup. I think I narrowed it down to the UDB-C cable to the VIBS board, because when I unhooked everything when done, I forgot to disconnect the cable to the VIBS board, and I wasn't getting sound from the built in games. I though I blew something, then realized I forgot to disconnect that cable. Once I did, sound was back.
    My setup is a laptop, so I have on HMDI and I use the thunderbolt for the backglass display. I do hear some pops and scary sounds when I click the button to switch to the backglass display. I also checked that all cable are securely inserted.

      It uses the Unreal engine, offers improved effects, lighting, etc. It's not just the tables, there are other overall improvements. Best way to know for sure is to try some of the free tables and see what you think or watch some of the game play towards the end of this video for examples.

    I have some feedback and a question or two.
    I have the ASUS - TUF 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7 with 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 - 1TB SSD, which seems to be a powerful PC. I tried both Xpadder and JoyToKey with the refresh rate set to 59Hz and graphics set to performance. JoyToKey works great, but I get a lot a frame dropping, tearing, etc. with Xpadder. Maybe this will help someone.
    I get the same exact experience with both as far as key mapping. Nothing seems to work. I have the Arcade Control Panel, I followed instruction for loading the downloaded files, but I have to use the laptop keyboard to do anything. The trackball works, but when I hit A or X, all they do is overlay some keymaps on the cabinet screen and don't do anything. The front of the pinball machine does not function as it is supposed to. It seems I have to use the laptop keyboard for everything until I pick my table and then I can use the front nudge to start it. What am I doing wrong?

      See the 4th point here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alpfx/#Xpadder_Troubleshooting and see if that helps. On one machine, there was only one square at the top. On another, there were two. Apply the profile to both (if you see two) and see if that resolves the issue. The squares at the top are what your PC is seeing as the controller (i.e. the ACP). If one isn't working, it's likely the other. PC specs. seem good, should be able to play smoothly. However, the button mapping isn't likely going to impact gameplay performance.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  5 місяців тому

      Also, make sure to terminate j2k if you test Xpadder again. You don't want both running at the same time.

      @@WagnersTechTalk This is what I found. With Xpadder up and not in the game yet, all the pressed buttons display properly in Xpadder when pressed. Good. I go into the game and now nothing works correctly, until I actually get into the board. When I go into the game, all buttons do "something" but not what they are supposed to do. The escape keys work, but Enter does not, so I cannot select anything. I have to use the laptop keyboard to do anything until I get into the board. The plunger actually works as Enter, but that is annoying to use to Select something to execute. Like I said before, the buttons display "keys" onto the screen, but they just not do anything, except Escape. This is the same with JoyToKey. I do appreciate immensely that you respond to me so quickly and the service you provide.

      @@MultiKevorkian That's odd, I'm using an ASUS laptop (over OTG with the ALP 4KP) as well with an i9/rtx 4070 and not experiencing the same. I meant no disrespect regarding j2k/xpadder being run at the same time. It's just something I've run into from some in the past when they had double-presses. Based on what you're saying, it sounds like something else may be interfering but I don't know what that is. You might try ditching Xpadder and j2k and see if Steam button mapping works for you. I can't honestly think of anything else it could be.

      What model GPU do you have? If it's an Nvidia, give this a try and see if it helps:
      1) set the monitor frequency to 59Hz instead of the default 60Hz.
      2) update the Nvidia 3D setting to favor Performance over Quality.
