This vehicle is awesome, at 37 with no kids, I can’t believe I clicked on this but I love the look and know the ride quality of a van is hard to match for long trips.
I believe it is why CUVs are popular in the recent decade. Minivans are more comfortable, while Jeep and trucks are more for off-roading. When people choose CUVs they think they chose the best of both worlds. The reality is most CUVs can barely handle gravel roads, and with the unibody design for most CUVs, they dont sacrifice much ride quality comparing to truck based SUVs with leaf spring rear end that tend to bounce and dive. A sedan/hatchback/wagon or a minivan is more than enough for 90%+ of the drivers in cities / suburb area and for 90%+ of the driving conditions with proper set of tires. All the CUV, SUV, and truck craze is just child emotions that is more of toys to meet the wants rather than the needs.
@@ibmtpx24 I mostly agree with the statement that sedan/hatchback/wagon is enough for 90% of the driver, I also think that a strong point of CUV is the cargo flexibility(or in some cases, perceived flexibility). Most driver will stay in their cities/town but the marketing of SUV/CUV adventures also let them feel like they are getting more from their cars if they buy a CUV. The fact that most manufacturers are just pumping out SUV and the sedan/hatchback are often more expensive than the SUV with less to choose from also didn't help.
I'm 56 and looking at this as an escape vehicle.. Those captain chairs in the second row, look great to sleep in. Huge boot for all my stuff. But here in Australia we can opt for the diesel engine which can give 1000km/600mile range easily.
Kinda silly that car manufacturers would only give the top of the line trim to journalists to review only to have the lack of an important sought out feature ( ability to remove second row seats) come bite them.
I know you're working your way up (and out), Micah, but it's really nice to see you in the driver's seat again here at KBB. Your writing and whimsy are just exceptional and irreplaceable. Everything changes. That just makes new videos out with you that much more anticipated. Oh, and the Carnival? Skip the SX Prestige package. Gotcha. See you over at Micah Drives.
More than 280,000 Hyundai Kia vehicles were recalled over concerns that they could catch fire if parked indoors. Automakers report 25 fire or melt incidents in the US and Canada
Camper van conversion! Perfect cargo space for one even if the 2nd row needs to be pushed up instead of removed. Plenty of room for a week-end getaway.
Outside the US market, they have an 11 seater version of this minivan. They shoe horned 3 rows of seats with the last row seat being upright and touching the rear hatch. So you can carry 9 passengers uncomfortably in the 11 seater version
I would totally consider the lounge chair variant. No kids so I'd bury the third row and use the additional cargo space. I'd consider this as a travel vehicle in lieu of a small camper or full size vehicle. Needs AWD though.
As a family of 4 I was waiting fot this review... I recently got the CARNIVAL LX @ 43k here in PUERTO RICO cars gets pricey and whatnot, they customize a little the trims before hand.... Overall at the moment it drives awesome, the mpg are a little rough but then again if I try to get a HYBRID it would go up to 52k basic trim.
Mistake on the third row access critique. Just slide the middle seats apart..then there's plenty of space to get to the third row between these 2nd row seats. You're not limited to just folding the middle seats for third row access.
My husband wants me to get minivan I told him I will never be the soccer man mini van mom. Stopped by kia to look at suv and I told him I liked the carnival suv! He told me it was a van I was shocked I could drive this for sure! Although expensive for a kia it's a beauty and can't wait until we can buy it.
The comfort and hauling ability of a minivan can’t be beat, just sold my 2007 Hyundai entourage and regret it now, bought a Toyota Sequoia which is a huge suv but doesn’t hold a candle to hauling stuff or pick up and go. Will get a newer mini soon with working ac, probably a carnival in 3 yrs, or a Sienna.
Would love to see a "chrome delete" option with a black/body color trim instead. I foresee the chrome "wings" on the rear pillars not aging well l and think many of us with kids preferring to avoid flashy trim for something more subdued....
The review is fun, but kinda hard to know what to take seriously when the reviewer is constantly joking. Is this MPV actually a good buy or is it just as quirky as its name?
The 3rd row seat will stay folded down. It makes a comfortable vehicle for 2. The SX Prestige is not primarily designed for a big family's. You forgot to mention the fully functional rear opening sunroof. I spend a lot of time in Asia, and it's very common to see tricked out vans like this that many younger people drive and think it's cool.. Of course, an American car reviewer is too cool to say that🙂
I'm going to play devils advocate and say that if you have the prestige trim, you very likely aren't hauling plywood or furniture in your van. I don't think it's being marketed to the diy or "I don't have access to a truck" crowd. The prestige definitely feels more like a trim for those with two kids who want to road trip or even ride share drivers if you want to make money with it. You can also get a trailer hitch option if you want to haul anything to big to fit behind the reclining seats. A 5x8 trailer is easy enough to pull in that case
Kia/Hyundai makes great vehicles, but always mix up the names. I think the Carnival should have been named Venue and visa versa. Genesis should have been named Equus, but still great vehicles nonetheless.
Agree...even would go so far as to say that Carnival was a poor model name choice altogether, at least for the US market. Has a cheap connotation - perhaps by association with "Ford Festiva" or "Ford Fiesta" :-D

Understand is that all these videos about this vehicle never mentioned the traverse. They look ideally the same. With a few differences. Micah makes the key point in the last few seconds of the video. With neither AWD nor hybrid options the Carnival is unlikely to rise above fourth place in a four horse race. In fact, if the Carnival tripled the annual sales of the earlier Sedona minivan (circal 15,000) per year, it would still be in fourth place out of four. Not surprisingly, then, that KIA didn't opt to put more development and production costs into the vehicle. Still, it's a worthwhile effort. However, I can't quite understand the 2nd row lounge chair option in the second row. It's a "wow" factor I suppose. But isn't the 2nd and 3rd rows where families consign the kids? What does it say about entitlement that the best seats in the car are reserved for the two occupants of the 2nd row. Is the Carnival supposed to be a juvenile limousine?
My guess is some families may have elderly people too. Put grandma and grandpa in the 2nd row, and the kids in the uncomfortable back where they belong 🤣
