Excellent explanation. I was confused between Honda & Kia but now I might be going with carnival for the fact of its warranty, Price plus inside look, especially if u get it in a saddle brown color. Thank u guys for sharing and giving your opinion.
While the KIA is well done, as a former traffic collision investigator, I have to take issue with the location of the rear turn signals. IMHO they are way too low to be clearly visible in moderate to heavy traffic. With more and more drivers distracted by their phones and "infotainment" systems, brake lights need to be as obvious as possible, especially if there is snow.
I was surprised to see that KIA was still using those. They were in the news a couple of years back for the reason that you state. They're also hard to see from certain angles, and impossible to see when towing a trailer. Particularly dangerous if the trailer lights failed.

@@rwood930 My last 2 cars were Odysseys, and I loved them! Just purchased a KIA Carnival, and I'm missing my Odyssey. The Carnival is a nice car, don't get me wrong, but the lack of storage in the front 2 seats is super annoying (nowhere for driver's bag or purse), the cupholders only fit narrow bottles (?!?! in a family car??), and the trim on the front dash in front of the 1st row passenger seat got scratched by a backpack within 48 hours of us bringing the KIA home... which NEVER happened in either of my Odysseys which I drove at minimum 8+ years each (transporting 3+ kids at a time). For KIA, you have to push a button for opening the car, but my Honda you just touched the door knob (1 less step, not a huge deal, but just smoother/more intuitive). Ditto for location of buttons to close 2nd row sliding doors -- on Honda, visibly from when you are outside of the car, but on Kia, on inside of door and can only really see it when inside the car, which is weird because as a parent, I'm using that button from the outside when I get my kids out of the middle and back rows. As far as entertainment (screens), the KIA screens are positioned in a horrendous way on the rear of the 1st row headrests, and we didn't get them because they looked like they could easily get ripped off by getting stuck in a kid's backpack or sports gear bag just getting in and out of the car. This review fails to give points that the Odyssey has sliding seats front and back AND side to side. Any parent with kids needs to know this and this is worth about 5 points. You can get this feature in the lower EXL model and only can get this feature in the Kia at the top model which cost at least $15-$20K more than an Odyssey EXL and $10K more than an Odyssey Touring. Sliding seats is worth its weight in gold. This review/comparison is severely lacking without mentioning this. If you have three or more small kids, it is a necessity to have sliding seats in all directions.
So does kia. It's just The side to side is not as pronounced as the Honda. The center seat sliding all the way back is just as useful as seats sliding sideways
My wife and I really like the Carnival but the dealers are all asking $5k and up above MSRP which is leading me to just settle with the Honda. Perhaps in a few years I can sell and upgrade with good resale price
Yeah that is another perk. And their reliability. Though I bought a Kia Soul in 2014 that was a year old and it’s held up very well. I keep up with maintenance and recalls too though. I’ve been rough on it a few times and it’s still sturdy. If I had never owned a Kia I probably would’ve never considered the carnival.
I’m looking at both these vehicles. And the biggest thing other than price pushing me towards the Carnival is the placement of the rear vents. Hondas are awkwardly placed behind the seats in front of them. And I’ve heard the air flow is horrible and possibly just forced air not even conditioned. Carnivals are in the ceiling. Carnival also has a custom button on the steering wheel you can assign to the cabin camera. I’d be interested to know how their ground clearances compare because I go down a lot of unpaved/gravel/dirt roads This was a great video 👍🏼
I wouldn’t get the rear seat entertainment on the carnival. Those screens are liable to be broken. Plus I have a headrest mount for my sons $50 kindle that works just fine. I do wish the moonroof and entertainment were the same as the odyssey
As a 7 year (two different models) odyssey’s owner I can say the vent placement is awful! If your child is rear facing they will sweat unless you prestart your van. It is the absolute fail on this vehicle especially if you live in Texas! Also stay away from 2018. I had easily 5 recalls then had my fuel injectors fail . Also, had a battery issue following that which took 3 different visits to finally get replaced (under warranty as this all happened at 26k ). This did not steer me away though as I ended up purchasing a 2021 odyssey as their features were easily top of the line at the time. Now the carnival is new and I have not checked it out fully but they have my interest although the side to side seat feature is sooooo nice on the odyssey. I do hate the look of that door slider though.
A bit late to this discussion but I had a 2014 odyssey, with ceiling vents. They were not as great as one thinks. My 4 kids at the time were 5 and under and these ceiling vents were meh. Sounds like the side vents are equally meh lol. We are currently waiting on a delivery for a 2023 Odyssey. We also considered the Carnival but it’s hard to pass up the reputation of an Odyssey.
@@randeortiz we ended up getting a 2019 odyssey and love it! Waited for a 2023 earlier this year and they kept getting pushed back in production. With our twins arrival getting closer we couldn’t wait anymore and scooped up first available

Just hearing the specs alone in a KIA is unmatched...Ventilated seats in a minivan?! The Koreans are taking over the auto market by storm...I love how they listen to their customers...Giving us great technology content and best powertain warranty in the market..You see Honda, reliability doesn't have to be boring. The Carnival definitely wins this race...KIA understood the assignment hands down...Just need an awd and a hybrid option. Which I've heard it is coming next model year.
Hope you guys & your family are OK after the terrible storm in Kentucky - great comparison review; I’d stick with Honda simply for its historic reliability - no small consideration for family transportation!
You guys don't give enough points for design and styling. People buy cars/vans/SUVs because how they look. I hate the Honda. It's dated. Pure and simple. It looks like a 2018 Van. The guy that designed the front took off for a 2 year vacation. Meanwhile, they have a team of designers for the Carnival just to create the unique front. The 8" infotainment center and all the buttons? That's classic Honda. It looks like they just got lazy. The Carnival looks more luxurious and hi tech. As far as reliability goes, I don't think Honda has that market cornered anymore. I'll take the Kia's warranty over Honda any day.
Looks are of secondary, importance, but I'd prefer to have a good looking vehicle. To my eyes the Odyssey looks refined and the parts are well integrated integrated with each other, and the Kia, not so much. But, as they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I'm sure many will find their Carnival tp be good looking.
Great review. Love the side by side, feature by feature approach. Others tend to sort of, compile it all then offer subjective comparisons and recommendations. We drove both today and liked the Kia’s drive, seemingly higher front seat position, infotainment, and overall look over the Odyssey. Only real knock on the Kia was the lack of front cubby space. My wife’s purse ends up sitting at the feet and takes up comfort space on trips so the cubby with the Odyssey would be nice. Also the lack of side by side movement with the 2nd row seats in the Kia were a bummer. With two kid seats, getting to the back row will be really tough in the Kia. We figure we may put them middle and side seats so one seat can easily be popped forward for 3rd row access. Anyway, really appreciate your studious and subjective approach.
Why doesn't anybody mention that the Honda Odyssey does have a sports drive option when driving that can be used with the pedal shifters which makes it more responsive, with or without the pedal shifters
15 odyssey elite owner, hard to think otherwise, 260,000km and still going strong. It's the way the odyssey drives. I'd rather be a sport minivan then a minivan that rock and lean when driving.
Kia carnival my choice the only upgrade change’s I would like to see is a added awd hybrid system like Toyota Sienna and the ability to hide the slide in door like the sienna other than that I think it’s the best looking one interior and exterior some may say the Pacifica I guess it’s a toss up!
Kia definitely looks better inside and out than the Pacifica however Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge make some of the comfiest cars believe it or not the seats are so squishy
from Korea - I have heard that Kia will put 1.6 turbo, which is the same one from Sorento. I am not sure why this is going to work with Carnival, and many others as well
Choice is simple. The average buyer who go for tech, chrome, looks and have NO idea about vehicle safety and reliability will choose the Kia. The ones who know, well they know. And will buy the Honda, every time.😛
We ended up going with KIA after and have owned it now happily for over a 1 year. We're not prolific drivers (it's become more of a weekend car) but we're very happy with the decision. We test drove ALL 4 major brands before buying and as other commenters have noted, each brand has its features that others lack. The right decision will be based on the tradeoffs of those features as per your family's needs (as opposed to being a loyal patron to one badge/brand over the other). As a driver, I wanted the driver centric safety features in the SX Prestige like blind-spot cluster cameras along with the huge amount of space, superior exterior styling, and quality of the interior we found in the Kia at comparable trim levels in the other cars. The car still feels great, is easy to clean and maintain, and gets compliments from my fellow luxury 3-row SUV-owning friends and family. that OR they're just being kind since i've "settled" on a minivan :)
I might be a bit biased since my 2022 Odyssey is my 5th one. All previous ones (13, 15, 17 & 19) were Touring’s. I downgraded to an EX-L Navi for the 22 and miss many features that the Tourings had. Funny enough dome are features you said the Odyssey didn’t have. Vented seats, power folding mirrors and 11 speaker sound system were features on my 2019 Touring. Perhaps the difference is that in Canada we only have one Touring trim level that I believe is equal to a US Touring Elite. Before my 5 Odyssey’s I owned a Kia Sedona EX-L. It was a great van but it’s clear that the Carnival shows that Kia has come a long way.
I’m pretty surprised you didn’t mention the fact that on the carnival you could remove the middle seat from the second row and make the second row captain seats.
@@grantssage8395 They can both remove the 2nd row seats, but only the Carnival can spin them 180 degrees to face the third row.... like London Cab style.
for minivan 2nd row and 3row ride quality is one of the most important thing. In Korea, reviews give good points to sienna and odyssey for ride quality and handling.
Odyssey for me, although I’d never buy a minivan as I don’t have a need for it. I just trust the older platform waaaay more than a first generation release from Kia
honestly i feel like you didn't give the honda points when it had better metrics in other area's. like honda's transmission is way more refined and 0 to 60 is faster .5 sec only minivan at 7 and handles better. dual screen don't work for 3rd row passengers. really should of been a tie at 5.5 using "your" system
From the clip, the Odyssey engine sounds better. I would get either one if a hybrid is offered. Otherwise I would go with Odyssey for the expected better reliability.
Kia recalled over 500k due to engine fire in the past year! Even the manufacturer does not recommend parking your car in the garage, in case of engine fire. Don't let Kia blind you with tech and amenities. Do your homework because it could save you and your families life ....
SouthwestAsian? You mean SoutheastAsian. But yeah, Toyota and Honda (and others like Subaru and Isuzu) have been selling cheap trucks there for decades so a lot of people are invested in them. I lived in Indonesia for 4 years and a Toyota/Dacia was the only brand you could by with no import tax(+40%).
When the odyssey hits 100 k miles, it is time to change the timing belt, belt tensioner, and water pump. As a gdi only engine, it is probably time for a carbon clean job due. It also has the vcm problems in the v6. Hyundai and Kia’s v6 engines are much better than their 4 cyl ones. They may have problems, but unlike the Honda v6 engines since the problems mentioned above are definite, not maybe.
Great review but one note...there isn't a parent on earth that thinks 'Piano Black' trim is a good idea in a family rig but for some reason you call it a "premium touch". Sure, go ahead and touch it and let us know what you think about your finger print🤨. That would be a -10 on a point scale for the Carnival interior.
been driving my 2009 Odyssey for 217k+ miles. It's a great vehicle. while I don't like the styling on either one, I'd go with the Honda. I think the Kia is trying to disguise itself as a crossover. I think they should embrace the minivan styling rather than try to hide it. kia interior has way too much piano black that likely won't age well. and that's ultimately what your daily interaction will be with. you'll be staring at dust, finger prints, and scratches. sure the Honda uses it as well, but looks to be much less. also, I know this is subjective and Kia likely puts out a decent product, I'll trust the Honda to be a better vehicle 10+ yrs and 150-250k miles into ownership. of you only own for 3-5 yrs, either one will probably be great. all that said I'd still cross shop against a Toyota. wish Lexus made a van. I'd probably be all in on that
How many years has the Kia had that engine running in a vehicle ? The honda 3.5 is legendary. Let's revisit this comparison with the same van in 10 years !
@_WayfaringStranger US regulations are largely based on seatbelts which don't concurrently adjust for rotating seats. The Carnival seat belts are integrated with each seat to avoid that issue. Reports and studies out of the EU show rear facing seats are actually safer.
Have 2007 EXL odyssey at 287K kms (Canada). It just went through it's second timing belt and serpentine belt. Being a 14 yr old vehicle, some repairs had to be done (oil leaks, ball joints). The weakness of the odyssey is the sliding doors. They use plastic wheels for the mid rollers. Odyssey drives like a car, easy to drive, with a smooth 3.5L engine that still is strong. Reg oil maintenance, and once a yr I change the tranny fluid. In a couple of yrs, I'll be looking for another vehicle - Kia may be in the list, but with Korean cars - not sure of the parts availability etc, though it has a 10 yr warranty which is very attractive.
Yes, but to get warranty need to do maintenance on dealer other way no warranty, fluid transmission on any new or 5 yrs old is sealed transmission is expensive, at this time 2022 Honda cost $140.00 on dealer, except on Pilot. I have Toyota corolla iM 2017, cost $750.00 on dealer, outside can save around $200.00 but oil and filter have to be from dealer.
Does the Carnival have a start up key with a computer chip in it? I understand California is suing an auto company because their keys have no computer chip which makes them super easy to steal. Just curious.
The KIA's turn signal location is a danger. If they moved it up; and added AWD; I'd buy one right now.. all mini vans are missing something that's a deal breaker and pissing me off. Honda and Kia need AWD; the Sienna has low power; no spare tire; and non-removable 2nd row.. Chrysler will break in about 2 months and depreciate in value i about 4 days..
I like the odessey it's the only van that has a place for a woman to put a purse I've in other vans and friends have to put there poured. In the back of the van the only van that thinks of a woman and has a place for that a man could use it to if they have a brief case
I can’t believe I got the 22’ Tundra before you guys! If I snag a hot vehicle I always check to see if you guys have done it. And you always beat me to it! 😂 finally 1 point for Isaac. Anddd great minivan comparison as always!

@@Freethinkerrrr congratulations on your twins! Car buying right now is insane. Toyota siennas have a year long wait list. I’m grateful to have gotten a 2023 Odyssey so soon, we just picked it up Friday. Glad you guys are enjoying your Odyssey, they are great vehicles.
Do more research please!
@@engineblenders963 For what?
Hope you guys & your family are OK after the terrible storm in Kentucky - great comparison review; I’d stick with Honda simply for its historic reliability - no small consideration for family transportation!
Thankfully we're fine! Thanks for checking in
You guys don't give enough points for design and styling.
Just like the Honda Pilot and passport dinosaurs compare to the competition especially the pilot
Thanks for sharing, ODYSSEY still winner in my book especially when I consider reputable reliability and quality and resale value.
Reliability and resale value are the only things Honda/Toyota fans bring up but both are a myth since 2015.
@@sphong0610 yup, like broken records
@@sphong0610 I've been owning Honda and Acura for 28 years and not guessing or following others. I have used or bought other brands and it's a fact.
@@TheKingkingg don’t mind them. They are just wafer army paid by Hyundai to post everywhere.
@@sphong0610 Toyota definitely is more reliable and Honda holds value more, neither is a myth.
I meant “studious and objective” in that last line.
Thanks, Kevin! Glad you enjoyed 👍
Why doesn't anybody mention that the Honda Odyssey does have a sports drive option when driving that can be used with the pedal shifters which makes it more responsive, with or without the pedal shifters
Thanks for the review, I’ll take the Odyssey!!!
15 odyssey elite owner, hard to think otherwise, 260,000km and still going strong.
It's the way the odyssey drives. I'd rather be a sport minivan then a minivan that rock and lean when driving.
If I knew I’d get 260k out of an odyssey I’d buy one tomorrow. Any reason the other trims couldn’t get the same miles?
Kia carnival my choice the only upgrade change’s I would like to see is a added awd hybrid system like Toyota Sienna and the ability to hide the slide in door like the sienna other than that I think it’s the best looking one interior and exterior some may say the Pacifica I guess it’s a toss up!
KIA will offer a hybrid and awd version next model year.
Kia definitely looks better inside and out than the Pacifica however Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge make some of the comfiest cars believe it or not the seats are so squishy
from Korea - I have heard that Kia will put 1.6 turbo, which is the same one from Sorento. I am not sure why this is going to work with Carnival, and many others as well
Kia just looks better. The Odyssey is just clunky
It might look better but Honda is 99% more reliable than junk Hyundai/Kia. Just facts!
@@CryptoDad83 "just facts" bro are you stuck in the early 2000s?
Kelley blue book says otherwise.
Choice is simple. The average buyer who go for tech, chrome, looks and have NO idea about vehicle safety and reliability will choose the Kia. The ones who know, well they know. And will buy the Honda, every time.😛
👍
The odyssey has that too lol
@@grantssage8395 They can both remove the 2nd row seats, but only the Carnival can spin them 180 degrees to face the third row.... like London Cab style.
Love this comparison. I love the carnival most because of its luxury features
for minivan 2nd row and 3row ride quality is one of the most important thing. In Korea, reviews give good points to sienna and odyssey for ride quality and handling.
Odyssey for me, although I’d never buy a minivan as I don’t have a need for it. I just trust the older platform waaaay more than a first generation release from Kia
?? this is the carnival's fourth generation?
lol... kia is better here
@@joeykiller nope
Used to be a Sedona
@@CharlotteSoccerHighlights nope its been called carnival pretty much everywhere else other than a few markets since gen 1
I would be happier been seeing in a carnival. Design just rocks
My 2007 Honda Odyssey with 150k miles is still going strong. Not quite sure why but I like to drive it more than my 2021 Acura RDX AWD.
honestly i feel like you didn't give the honda points when it had better metrics in other area's. like honda's transmission is way more refined and 0 to 60 is faster .5 sec only minivan at 7 and handles better. dual screen don't work for 3rd row passengers. really should of been a tie at 5.5 using "your" system
Hey Car Confections, I love your car comparisons!
Thanks!
Although I am more prone toward the Odyssey I am pleasantly surprised with KIAs entry into this segment this is a nice review I totally enjoyed
Southeast Asians sure love Honda minivans in North America.
Great Comparison Review. But The Next Generation Honda Odyssey Is Coming Very Soon.
Honda piure and simple reliability ❤❤
Thanks! That makes sense from a family perspective
Long waited comparison. Finally !!
The odyssey for the Japanese Domestic Market looks sooooo much better. US market still gets the same clunky look
been driving my 2009 Odyssey for 217k+ miles.
I'd probably be all in on that
Well said and thought through.
Odyssey is my choice.
Carnival seems like a better bet. Their qualities are similar but it just seems like you get more stuff for the carnival
KIA to many features and good warranty 👍👍👍
I wish Honda would make the Odyssey look more like the Carnivals exterior. I hateee the look of a minivan.
To slide the second row seats side to side you have to remove the middle seat ?
Live in new England. All wheel drive is a plus. For that option Toyota Sienna wins.
there's no best car but what fits you the most. In my case the carnival has everything I need.
the honda engine sounds it struggling more than the kia
How many years has the Kia had that engine running in a vehicle ? The honda 3.5 is legendary. Let's revisit this comparison with the same van in 10 years !
The Kia could theoretically still be under factory warranty in 10 years.
You can also spin the 2nd row Carnival's seats 180 degrees to face the rear. No other modern minivan can do that. This never seems to get mentioned.
The minivan is crashed tested with rear seats facing forward. In the USA it is not recommended to rotate seats as it could be less safe in a crash.
And I actually don’t think you can. The put little plastic blocker in America to prevent that
@L.L there is a video on UA-cam of how to do it. Takes ~10 minutes if you own a pliers.
@_WayfaringStranger US regulations are largely based on seatbelts which don't concurrently adjust for rotating seats. The Carnival seat belts are integrated with each seat to avoid that issue. Reports and studies out of the EU show rear facing seats are actually safer.
I think nothing can beat the legendary v6 in the odyssey
Kia mops the floor with this Honda
😂😂😂😂😂😂 ignorance is bliss
Vehicles built after November 2021 have the immobilzer added to the key.
A year later, the theft rate on some Kia's have made insurance companies refuse to ensure some Kia's.
You said it. Shopping for a minivan right now feels like an exercise in picking your poison.
don’t let kia fool you, put some miles on those vans and the Honda will prove itself
Are Kias still a high risk to be stolen? That’s what is holding me back in my decision for the carnival
Why no moon roof in the Kia for lower options!?!? That’s a deal breaker for my wife, dang it!
The Kia has that Suv appearance certain people won’t drive a van because we’ll it looks like a van. This should do well.
Amazing video as always!😸
Thanks 😊
Good effort!!
I like the odessey it's the only van that has a place for a woman to put a purse I've in other vans and friends have to put there poured. In the back of the van the only van that thinks of a woman and has a place for that a man could use it to if they have a brief case
Ody at Honda broke down no parts in USA. How is that for Honda trade it for different van
I love this compassion video ❤
My question is do the seats in the Kia fold all the way down like they do in the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge grand Caravan?
No. That's Chrysler's only
Can you do the review after 10 years then see the real points?
Kia is better.
Do you guys have one with the Sienna?
We have a 2023 Sienna review ironically posting this afternoon!
Comparing kia with Honda really? Really? With Honda?
the honda odyssey... looks damn 80s....
Never mind Kia tellurides and carnivals, they are 6 to 11,000 over sticker - never gonna do that!
Honda for me,,
The Honda is outdated and incredibly bland. They’re relying on their name, not their quality, to bring in uninformed buyers. Kia has raised the bar
Thoroughly compared
Honda Odyssey is better
Appreciate the comparison, but you lost me when you used "premium touches" and "piano black" in the same sentence
