Awesome info Chris!!!! I'm just now getting back into models after years of fails. Bought a compressor and now I have people, like yourself, that can give hints and tips to a better build!!!! TY!!!!
+John Happel (Full Mast Hap) Welcome back and I hope you have great success. I do hope you saw my disclaimer on the LA's Totally Awesome Mop and Shine. They changes the formula and it no longer works to bring out a shine. I use Pledge floor care now without any problems. Thanks for watching and stay tuned in for more soon.
I have been using craft paint for a little while now and absolutely love it! it takes a bit getting used to but once you figure out your paint/thinner ratio I use blue washer fluid cut with water. my favorite things about craft paint is it's so easy to clean up and the color choices are endless!
So glad to hear this bud. I love it and I have taken awards with a model that cost 5 bucks top to paint the entire thing. Everybody else was 30 to 50 bucks and some that were upwards to 70 bucks juatr because it was built for a show with the intentions of winning trophy's Then I walked in with a 5 buck beater paint job and took best paint and best of show and 1st in class against the second place who spent 60 bucks just on the body alone. here is a link to the car's video. Acrylics are amazing to work with. My Best Model Of 2013
Chris, just a wonderful tutorial, and I really like your dollar store pickups...I love the Dollar Tree for such items...can go crazy grabbing stuff in that store...and great cost analysis at the end...I am really moving toward the acrylics now in my upcoming builds...thanks for sharing...
Thanks bud. I like to help. I recently posted a video of my favorite build from 2013. I took 1st in class, best paint and best of show with it. I was not even expecting to win anything. I spent a total of four dollars worth of paint on it and second and third place finishers were 60 bucks just for the body finish. I just did a video of my Chrysler 300 I did for four bucks and I have gotten a few messages from people who built the same car and was 40 bucks or more just for the body. With this kind of results it is hard to believe people are spending that much.
Chris Chapman Oh by the way, there is no such thing as a dollar store. I go in for one item for a buck and walk out thirty buck broker and a bag full of goodies.
Amen to that, brother..I get all sorts of things, from plastic containers to tapes to plastic spoons to anything my brain thinks can be used on the bench...its a great trip...
Thanks for the video I've recently gotten back into the hobby basically as a anxiety and stress relief as opposed to medication . I been researching the craft paint because I can't spend a lot on paints and all . Your videos is very informative . With a loss of a leg I have to spend money wisely and seen the craft paints but didn't know how they would turn out but you're getting great results from it hope with time and practice I can do some like that . And yes it is a great stress relief for me anyway.
Those are some really neat ideas. Looking forward to applying these ideas to paper covered foam based R/C airplanes. Been looking for something that gives decent results and been having a hard time. Already have the airbrush - have nothing to lose!
Thank you for the tips. I am back into building models after a 40 year break. I am getting ready to purchase an airbrush set and need tips on painting. This video helps a lot! I am going to save it and watch it over and over when I need the help. Again, GREAT tips! Your models look awesome too! BTW, my favorite car is the 59 Chevy, this is the first car I built after my return and I used regular rattle cans and a clear coat without sanding. I am going to go back and sand and polish it. Mine is in bright red with a red and white interior. I wish I could post photos of it, it looks really good.
@@ChrisChapman195 I need your help. I have been using your tips and also going by trial and error with my new airbrush. Things were going great until this morning. I painted the parts to the body of a car with an acrylic paint , they have been drying for 2 days. Today I did a test spray on one of the smaller body parts to see how it would look in a gloss finish. The paint crinkled (if that's a word) in a few places. What caused this? Did I spray it on too heavy at first? I would like to give you my email address so I can send pics to you, your help wold be appreciated ASAP.
Wow... Thanks so much for sharing... not only are the finishes amazing, but at a fraction of the cost of regular model paints. What are the ratios of paint to windshield washer/future?
Hi Chris Looking for advice. I’m a rookie airbrusher and I’m using acrylic paints. Ive watched a lot of your videos and have learned a lot. What I’m running into is the airbrush doesn’t seem to spray paint as well as I think it should be. It seemed to spray better when it was new, but now it’s barely spraying. FYI I mix my acrylics with washer fluid, my compressor is set around 21-23psi. Currently I have a 5 for a needle size. I’m not sure if the issue is the airbrush or my settings/mixture/or something else. I got the airbrush from Ebay for $35.00. I didn’t want to go to expensive for a first airbrush and like most I’m on a budget. I usually mix the paint around 50/50, but I also go by how it looks. The paint will drip off stir stick and if I place a drop of paint on the side of the jar it rolls down at a medium speed. I should also add I thoroughly clean it with washer fluid after each use and lube the needle once a day if used. I know this was kinda long but I wanted you to have all the facts so you could give me the advice of what I need to do. Change airbrush or change procedures. Thanks for your help.
Sounds to me if it was spraying fine initially and now it is not it needs a good thorough cleaning. Paint dries inside your pickup tube and internal parts of the airbrush. Give them all a good cleaning and try again.
Todd Zehr may have answered your question. Sorry for delay replying. If you can get a jewelry sonic cleaner. Put washer fluid in it and put all parts of the airbrush except for the springs in it and run a cycle. That will help ensure it is clean.
Good morning Chris I’ve never used Micro-set or Micro-sol on my decals. I’m thinking of using them for the bigger decals but before I do I was wondering if it would affect the acrylic paints or Pledge clear coats? Thanks for your help. Happy building and God bless Jim
Hello Jim. As long as you have fully cured the pledge you should be okay. I have had no problems. I dip a brush into the solution then dab on a paper towel then apply to model or decal. This way it does not saturate the area.
Thanks for sharing your experience Chris. Like a lot of others who posted below, I am getting back into the hobby and it's folks like yourself that greatly help speed up the learning curve. I've watched several videos and you're the first person that I can recall that use craft store acrylics for base color painting and that recommended the dollar store products. Glad I read below to catch that Mop & Shine no longer shines, haha. But I am mostly an aircraft modeler, so most top coats are flat or matte, so I'm going to try it out anyway. Thanks again!
Glad ya stopped by. The mop and shine is great for a flat finish or for sealing it in. I did do an airplane one and well, check out my vid on it in my video archives. Hour you enjoy what I have to offer.
Thanks man like the style. I'm getting back in the hobby. Going to start painting this way instead of the old expensive way. And is better for your health
Welcome back and thank you. I must point out that the LA totally awesome floor polish has changed and so I went back to pledge floor care. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
@@ChrisChapman195 I'll let you know. Waiting on a cordless airbrush I ordered, should be tomorrow. Happy to be back. Be listening to records on my 1976 Technics I restored, while I'm building.
Painting on a budget. great info. I need to go out and stock up on the blacks, and browns this week. Some of my best paint jobs have been done with acrylics. I just haven't had any luck using future for a clear coat.
Hello there.I use the blue windshield fluid washer that you buy for a gallon for less than 2 bucks. Usually it is a 50/50 mix unless you are using Folkart paints. They are thicker and need more washer fluid to paint. Also I use the washer fluid to clean my airbrush, my paint brush and on a q tip and rolled on a towel to clean up over spray and stuff.
Do you have a video on cleaning an air brush?...I'm thinking of trying acrylics as I'm a newbie & was not impressed with the expense per model. Thank you.
Just starting to learn about acrylics and different ideas on how to get good looking models. Is it possible to still use these techniques with an Iwata double action gravity fed airbrush? also how much air pressure should I be using?
Thanks for the great tips. I picked up every single product you mentioned in the video at Dollar Tree yesterday (Dollar Tree is the store that has this exact brand, I don't know if other stores do or not). The Mop n Shine now comes in a blue round bottle, so it took me awhile to find it. These are great tips. I have some badly painted parts soaking in the cleaner/degreaser right now! Thanks again. Oh yeah, and I only spent $15 and that bought enough of this to probably last for my entire modeling career. 4 bags of stuff for $15. Great deal!
thank you so much for your vid, helped me alot ,I only wanna use acrylics and createx ,because I made a model room outta my closet in our office ,lol and Im running my vent through ceiling..Ive always had problems with my models paint jobs,I have 11 of them to strip If that says anything lol ,this helped me alot,I was a airbrush artist ways back,so I have kick ass compressor and three Iwatas airbrushes.
Hey Chris great video thanks for posting,Just getting in to air brushing with acrylics do you recommend a primer coat before the acrylic application... thanks Mike
Welcome to the air brush Mike. I personally do not use primer. this however requires me to make sure the body is perfect prior to painting. But, you have to do the same thing after you prime as well right. So the body has to be perfect for the primer to go on then you need to prep the primer to be perfect for paint. I don't like to waste the time to do it two times lol. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Chris if your still around I've tried to find the Mop & shine at the dollar store & had no luck. Are you still able to find it & if not what is a substitute?
Give it a shot. It may take a bit to get used to. My advise is get a test body and paint it. Then go rinse it off in the sink and repaint it. Do this over and over until you get the results to are looking for. It is quite easy once you get it down.
Chris Chapman No problem, I am getting back into model building after years and years of just playing in classic rock bands. My channel is all video`s of me playing bass guitar to songs to help people learn songs. Basically the same thing you are doing only with music. I have just posted a video of the only two models I have left from my younger days please feel free to check it out and let me know what you think. You can also check out some of my music video`s if you like classic rock thanks again
Hello and thanks for (another) great video! On that very first model you did in acrylics, how long ago was that? What is your opinion of the durability of the acrylics compared to lacquers and oil enamels? Thanks!
Hello Les,he he, Thanks for watching. My Purple Super Bee was done about two and a half years ago and still looks great. I do wish I had done the trim with BMF. Was not aware it existed lol.
THANK YOU for that video. I don't paint models, but I do paint plastic Barbie doll furniture to get rid of that hideous pink they make everything out of. I make realistic doll rooms. I have all that Novus stuff for my motorcycle windshield, and I have multitudes of cheap acrylic paint. Your cars are awesome. Now off to watch more of your videos.
I can't believe the results you get using craft acrylics!! Do you have a video that goes more in depth about your mixing process or ratios? I assume you shoot these thru an airbrush?
Have you discovered any difference in winter vs summer formulas? I know the winter has ethyl alcohol to melt ice and I wondered if that affected the paint in any way for better or worse
What would you suggest on brush painting a model Car, Tank, airplane.i don't have an air brush and I would like to stay away from enamel Paints for health reasons.I have heard so many different ways that I have no idea how to start, Do you thin with water or thinner, and I see your car it looks great I want all of mine to have a clear shiny finish like the vette in your video,
Thanks Dave. One thing I need to mention. In this video I was using LA's Totally Awesome mop & Shine. They changed their formula and there is no more shine to it. I have gone to Pledge Floor Care with 2x the shine. Glad to see you back and thanks for the mention on your last video bud. Looking forward to a lot of stuff coming from your garage.
Hey Chris. Great video. I'M re watching all of them. I have a question. Could you mix acrylic paint with either future or an acrylic polyurethane like MinWax and use it as a primer. Thanks
Hello Benny. I have used Future to thin acrylics before with no problems. Minwax is something I have planned to try and bought some just have not tried it yet. Not sure what would happen. BUT, since nothing else seems to bother acrylics I don't know why minwax would.
Hello there. The blue does not affect the color at all and I start with a 60/40 mix and add more thinner if needed. Most craggy paints work well with this ratio. Folkart painters tend to be thicker and require more of a50/50 mix.
@@ChrisChapman195 Thank you. I will start with 60% acrylic paint and go from there. I just purchases a master TC 40 compressor, a G22, and G222 airbrushes. It's time to get learning. I keep going back to this video for hints and tips, it's a great video, THANK YOU for posting it.
@@titaniumhen sounds like you're set and ready to go. Remember patience and practice will give great results. His luck and please let me know how it goes.
Hey Chris, I've watched a lot of your videos. I've been using acrylics on my last couple models and love it. My question is, I got a little dust in the last model I did. What is the best way to clean it up, I doubt that you can sand and polish like normal laquer. Any tips would be appreciated.
+Jason Cardenas Hello Jason, sorry for delay. This ended up in my spam for some reason. You can sand acrylic with 800 grit to 1500 grit. Just sand lightly. Also I polish my acrylic clear just like I do other types. I just do it dry. If it needs sanding I start with 1000 grit up to 1500. Then I use a polish and wax it. Remember if it is really bad and craft acrylic paints it will cost less then 30 cents to just rinse it off and restart. Hope that helps and again sorry for the delay.
Hi Chris great Vid what about handling and drying time prior to polishing the Future Clear and do you use a medium needle in your airbrush what is your Airbrush of choice? I have managed to find Future in the UK but not easily, not sure about finding the paint you use, everything in modelling is over priced in the UK you guys have got it well easy.
Hey bud, thanks for watching. I use a hairdryer to dry after I put my acrylics on. Two minutes with a hairdryer I can handle the model. I give it about thirty minutes prior to doing any taping off or applying the floor polish. Again I use a hairdryer and then let it sit an hour. It is now ready for polish and wax. No wet or dry sanding needed. Also in the UK there is a product called KLEAR. That is also an acrylic based floor polish of which from what I have been told is quite cheap. Same results as future. I do use a medium airbrush through an Iwata HP-C. I have a badger syphon feed but have not used it in years since I got the Iwata. I plan to get two of the NEO;s by Iwata, one for detail and one for clear only painting. I have been told there are craft acrylic water based paints there but I am not sure where and a little pricy but WAY cheaper then enamel or lacquer based paints.I do not know the name of them sorry. I hope this will help and please ask if there is anything else I can do for you.
Hello Chris i went and got the LA Awesome shine to try it, I've been using the Pledge, Revive It Floor Gloss for my clear coats. I did a side by side comparison to see which product I prefer. I placed one coat of revive it onto a satin brown acrylic paint which then dried to a completely wet look shine, I began to do coats of the mop and shine after 10 coats of dry and apply I stopped, it was still a far cry away from the shine from one coat of revive it, but in the mop and shines defense it did appear to have good sealing properties. If you haven't tried the revive it I think you will like it as well...Thx for your videos...
heyhey thanx....was jus askin' classic plastic 101 , 'bout that very thing.....I think my only questions are , do you thin th paint w/ th window washing fluid , and is it wax rubbin' out , then future wax applied...and do you hav to rub that out too ??.....otherwise , Great work on all yer builds ...Thanx again.....Robert ☺
Thanks Robert. Yes I thin with washer fluid. I also use it to clean airbrush. I spray the future over the paint and let it dry. Then I polish with novus 2 & 3. Then put on the wax. Thanks again for watching!
Good morning Chris I sprayed my first acrylic metallic paint this morning and boy did I have an issue getting it to spray. Do you have to use more washer fluid when mixing? My issue was it didn’t want to spray and kept clogging up. Is that a sign it wasn’t thin enough? Thanks for your help.
If it's folkart acrylic then you need 60% washer fluid to 40%paint. Also the clogging could be too much air pressure. I usually spray at 18 to 200psi with a 35 mm needle. Also keep a q tip soak with washer fluid by and every few passes rub off the tip.
Chris the paint is DecoArt brand Extreme Sheen from Hobby Lobby. I started with 50/50 ratio so that was probably my first problem. My air setting is around 25. The other paints seem to work with that. I will try your tips the next time I spray metallic paint. Thanks again
I have just started model making and am using Tamiya paints. Very, very expensive by comparison to the "Plaid" brand your showing. Is their a big difference in the quality? Do the cheaper brands need more expertise to use and thinning ? Your models look great by the way.
Hey bud, thanks for checking out my vids. Acrylic paints are acrylic paints. They all spray the same if done right. The biggest thing is making sure to seal them with a clear coat so they don't get rubbed off while handling. I always clear mine with pledge floor care and if I want a different shade of clear I will use semi gloss, satin or matte depending on what I am looking for. Pledge is what I use for my gloss final clear. Also flat colors will lay down best and smoothest. Then you have to rely on the shine from your clear and polishing. Keep in mind also acrylics can be cleared with enamel and lacquer based clear coats as well.
Cool Andie. It takes a little practice but once you figure it out it is easy. Plus if you mess up go to the sink and rinse it off and start over. Do some test runs on a test body. Paint it rinse it paint rinse it until you get it figured out.
Hi Chris My local dollar store has stopped selling the cloth window wipes. I was wondering if you’re experiencing the same problem and if so what have you changed to? I’m on my last package so I hope you get this soon. 😀 Thanks for your help
Great video, that is a lot of helpful info. Just got my first airbrush so going to have to try some these tips. Also just wondering what is the ratio that you use to thin your paint, and have you ever sprayed acrylic paint with fine glitter in it? If so what where the results and do you thin it like your regular acrylics? Thanks again Chris. Sean from 216 Kustomz.
First thing, Thanks. There has been a formula change in the LA's Totally awesome and it does not produce a great shine anymore. For that I use pledge floor care. Not the wax but floor care. Everything else works as usual. I thin my acrylics now with windshield washer fluid as it helps spray a smoother finish. do a 50/50 mix. If too thin add more paint if too thick add fluid but 50/50 is a good starting place. I have not used fine glitter so I cannot say anything about that. I do however use pearl ex powders in my clear and then do a clear over that. I mix the pearl powder in the pledge and spray. Works great for that.
Hello, i recently painted the body of a model using acrylic paint. I wanna do an acrylic wash over it. However people suggest not to since when you apply the wash you then clean it up with acrylic thinner which will cause the body to also get erased. People suggest using a coat over the painted body then applying the acrylic wash .What are the best clear coats i can use for this? I wanna stay away from future since i want a matte look. Thanks!
Chris i love your work, and i have been using acylics for ages to and i mix it with prismacolor pencils for weathering, and i mix with windsheild washer, or windex
Sorry, Chris Got cut off, so i was telling you i use almost the same paint as you . Very Cool and informative video for those who did not try acrylic Folkart Paint Very cool Product. Thanks for sharing your knolege Chris. Marc saying Peace & Keep them cumming .
Thank you for this video! After a few coats of that clear, would you say the surface is pretty scratch resistant considering the fact that it's an acrylic paint?
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Ahmad Zayn I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great tips i really appreciate the time you put into these. Ive been having no luck with craft paints lately, and i really want to master them bc im tired of dumping money into model paints. I cant for the life of me get a smooth finish when painting a body! Its always "pebbly" and looks like it doesnt stick at all to surface. I primed everything. Do you have any tips? Thinning ratio seems right and am using windshield fluid
Hello Chris, just getting into airbrushing Drone bodies, was wondering, in the acrylics you use, do they make candy colors, and if so do u use undercoats. Hav u done a video on that...Candies if hey have it.
+Michael Aguirre Hello Michael. The craft paints that I use only have regular, metallic and pearl colors. Testors has a line of paint called Aztec colors that are an acrylic water based ready to spray candy paint. I have yet to play with them but a lot of builders love em. Another option I have used is Pearl Ex powders. You can get them at Michael's or online at Dick Blick art. Here is a final finish video that I did with the pearl ex in clear coat sprayed over a black. Also I will share a vid on the Aztec for you by another builder named Gary. ua-cam.com/video/CSZJG3kdaSM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/DL9mGMhozl0/v-deo.html There are three parts to Gary's series and I have some how too's on that same link with the pearl powder on my build updates. I hope this helps.
I have acrylics paint mixed and stored from over ten years ago that spray perfectly fine still. I don't think it has an expiration date. That's why I mix them in little containers to use later on.
Chris my local Dollartree does not carry the LA Totally Awesome Mop and Shine. We have other similar stores, Dollar General and Family Dollar. Both of these stores have their own brand of Mop and Shine. Will these work as well or is there a specific ingredient(s) I need to look for in the Mop and Shine product. BTW... I love your channel and it is very informative. Jim K
Hello Jim. Glad you enjoy my oddness lol. It's much appreciated. The LA mop and shine changed their formula and it does not give a shine like before. I went back to using pledge floor care. You can find that at Walmart or most grocery stores.
Thanks Chris for the response, I’m sure you’re busy so it means a lot for you to take time to answer everyone’s questions. My wife found a mop and shine at Dollar General that Im going to try on some spoons before on my models. I’ll let you know how it looks.
+Jeff Haty I am assuming you meant how do I thin Acrylics? Here is a video link that shows what I use and how I do it. I also need to make sure you know that LA's Totally awesome mop and shine has changed and is only good for sealing paint with a flat finish. Because of that I use pledge floor care with 2x shine. ua-cam.com/video/_bbHTLgPXaM/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for sharing your tips. You got me back into modeling after a 40+ year layoff. So far so good, I got the acrylics to lay down with no problems. After a couple tries I got the Pledge floor care 2x to lay down. (patients is very important with this step) I let it dry for 24+ hours. I decided to polish with Novus as you explained, being very gentle. It seemed to melt the Future and rub it off. I also tried just Meguires polish on a different model... same result. Is this something you have seen before? My goal is to build something that looks half as nice as the builds I've seen on you're channel, so I thought I wood pick your brain a little :>) THX Chris
+Rick Dono Hello Rick, thanks for tuning in. When it comes to your problem it could be a few things. First if it is not fully dry it can cause that. I always give it a week after it cures to fully dry. It will dry from the outside in and so because you can touch it it may still be soft under the surface. Another issue is a harsh compound like Novus three will do that. I very rarely use it. I start with number two and then MaGuire's polish and wax. Keep in mind MaGuire's have two different grits of compounds. Use the lightest. Next is not enough clear. This is tricky as how much is enough and how do you know? Polish and rubbing compounds are designed to shave off layers that are high cutting them down to the lower levels so it is smooth. The way to tell if it is smooth is the clear will be dull. If you see any shiny lightning like streaks or circles that means that those area's are lower than the rest and it will show. Too make sure you can cut a few layers off without cutting it down to the paint you need to put enough on. I use about two ounces of clear on my body's. Keep in mind I hold the airbrush back 12 inches or so so I am actually only getting 3/4 to 1 ounce of paint on the body and the rest is overflow. 3/4 ounce is good enough to sand and polish if it needs it. If it is smooth enough however a polish and wax is all that is needed. I do hope this helps. If ytou need more help let me know and please keep me posted on your progress.
+Chris Chapman Thanks for the quick and informative reply Chris. I will apply the clear and wait at least a week as you recommend. Thanks again for sharing your skills.
I use windshield washer fluid for thinning all my craft acrylic paints. The cheap blue stuff from Walmart. 1.49 a gallon. Lasts forever. Also do a 50/50 mix
high their i got a q.? on mop and shine have they changed their formula mine is a white color and i tested it on some paint i have always brushed my future on but when i brushed this on it separated ? so i tried it on painted plastic and when it dry ed i had to rub it with a cloth for a medium shine never had to do that before . as i said mine is a white color and it is the same but in a round bottle >
Hello Albert, I am not sure what's going on with mop and shine. First off it is milky looking from the bottle but dries clear so there is nothing wrong with that. Now, I have just opened a new bottle a couple weeks ago and sprayed it on a body. After three ounces it was flat as flat can be. I made a video about it nd a friend commented that he contacted the company and they said they changed the formula. I called to verify this and they said they had NOT changed it and it is the same as always. I played around with it some more and have yet to get a shine out of it. So I am not sure what was the deal is on it. It is still useful however, I am using to thin down my acrylics for washes, sealing in acrylic on my parts and using it as a dull coat as it is flat as flat can be. It will be great for military builders who need a flat finish. I don't know if there was a bad batch causing the problem but I have heard of a few people with the same problem. Wish I had a better answer for ya my friend.
Don't forget when you buy at Hobby Lobby they have a 40% off coupon you can get on your phone and can use it on one item per day. I buy most of my kits there and get 40% off every time. That would make the 8oz. bottle of paint about $1.80. The 40% coupon makes a $30. kit about $18. before tax. Also I thin Michaels has a 50% off coupon you can use the same way there.
This paint goes on pretty thin. When I do my two tones I painted the light color first and then the dark. I taped off with Tamiya tape as it is a low tac tape. After I taped off I sprayed a thin layer of floor polish to seal the tape edged from paint bleeding under it. Only time I have needed to sand was to get a fuzzy out of a clear. I used 800 grit then 1000 and 12000 grit sand paper dry and then reshot a thin coat of floor polish. That was it. No wet sanding and no sanding of the entire body after paint or clear. With the floor wax I just polish out with Novus #3 then #2. Then the wax and I am done. Here are two links of cars where I two toned so you can see the results. Thanks for watching! 1956 Ford Victoria 1959 Chevy Impala
fantastic details, im just getting into model airbrushing, i noticed that your video is shimmering?, i guess when you uploaded the video youtube said the video was shaky would you like to fix it, this is why i sayno when it asks, KEEP UP The Good Work
I am very impressed. This is the third person to do a video on using craft paint. I'm very interested in learning how to use this craft paint. Does the brand have to be Folk Art or does any type of Craft paint work ? I've used Apple Barrel one time for a spoon test and it was great success but disaster cleaning the air brush. What Airbrush do you shoot your craft paint out of ? Would you mind if I send you a private message with some additional questions so it doesn't hijack this thread from everyone else commenting on the video ? Lots of questions for you in regards to craft paint. Also wanted to throw in there that Zymol wax is a great, great wax for waxing. Bit on the spendy side but the results are outstanding. I also use Mcguires Detail mist as a last step for shine. I have the Novus but couldn't ever get any noticeable differences with it. Thanks for the video and by the way super builds using the craft paint.
Deron, I use any craft paint. Folkart to apple barrel to delta ceramacoat. I am using an Iwata HP-C but hope to get the Iwata NEO once I get back to work. That will be used just for my clear floor wax. As I said After I spray I will fill up the bowl with washer fluid and swirl around and dump out. Two three times then I will wipe out the bowl with the wipes. Put a little washer fluid into the bowl and spray it out. Ready for the next color. After I am done I will break The airbrush down and wipe the needle off with the wipe. Ready for the next time now. Bud, you can feel free to message me at any time you need. I am glad to help.
Chris Chapman See that's what Im worried about. The airbrushes I have are two Badger Patriot 105's and being friends with Ken the owner of Badger, he told me I want to do a complete teardown as little as possible. IF Im not going to be using it for a while or if its time for a seasonal cleaning. Is it mandatory to do a full tear down after each session or is it a personal preference ? Classicplastic101 told me to get a Paasche beginner brush because it comes with a bigger tip and just loves Craft paint so I think I may do that because they only cost $20 and with the 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby I can get it for like $12. Also where do you get your bigger bottles of Craft paint at for $2.99 ? Ive never seen them bigger then the smaller bottles perday of Apple Barrel at Walmart. I can get the smaller bottles of Flat colors at Walmart of Apple Barrel for $.59. The gloss colors are like $1.40 ID imagine the Metallic colors are the same as the Gloss.
Deron Shank Nope I don't do a full tear down. I do remove the tip and push the needle through just to wipe it down then put the needle in and put the tip on. That is just my personal way of doing it. If your needle gets paint stuck in it it can bend and that is not good. Just a precaution that takes no more then two minutes. The Paache air brush is a great starter brush. A lot of my learning came from watching Chris. I talk and asked a lot of questions. I then read forums and watched video's on acrylics and went with it. Hobby Lobby has the bigger bottles. They have 100's of colors but just main colors in the big bottles. Walmart does have the basics as well. They are usually on the very bottom shelf in the craft area.I get the Apple Barrel 90% of the time at .59 cents a bottle. The Folkart Metallics run 1.89 same with the gloss. Apple Barrel does have a big selection of gloss paints for .89 cents. Hobby Lobby has a huge selections. You can even get a pearl topcote by Delta ceramcoat.Spray on your base color then spray on the pearl over the top for that pearl shine. I have many browns, tans , rust, and oxodized colors for rusty weathering. I even have desert sand colors for military.I have never done a military vehicle but plan to do a Jeep, transport or tank once I am back to work using the acrylics. I want to see how well I can get them to work for that kind of application. Hope this helps and feel free to ask more if need be.
Donald Made the bottle I have here is the blue summer formula. I took a picture of it but I don't know how to load a pic in the comment section. If the bottle said it was winter then it was just because that's what I grabbed to put on not knowing it was winter formula. I put the fluid in smaller bottles so it was a mistake on my part.
I watch a lot of your video's and I get a lot of great idea's and awesome tips. And I just want to say Thanks, I also watch a lot of other people's videos that you know. And it's great to know that there are so Many Model's out there keeping the Hobby alive. Keep up the great work you guys are all Awesome !
Kool!!!! TY for the info, I'll be sure to keep that in mind.
Chris, I have to say that I'm truly impressed with what you can accomplish with simple craft paint. Well done sir!
Jim Boisvert thank you so much Jim.
Thank you very much for these tips! Great builds, too! Much appreciated.
You got it my friend. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.
My Best Model Of 2013
Just sharing...The only color washer fluid seems to affect is Yellow, it turns it a little green. For that use clear glass cleaner. Build on!!
....I use...
Wow Chris lots of info and so much money to save. Thanks
You got it bud. Thanks for watching.
Right on. Let me know how it works for you.
Welcome back Henry. I hope you enjoy the hobby. Please share pics of your work. I hope my video's can help.
I would like to give you my email address so I can send pics to you, your help wold be appreciated ASAP.
titaniumhen@yahoo.com
Wow... Thanks so much for sharing... not only are the finishes amazing, but at a fraction of the cost of regular model paints. What are the ratios of paint to windshield washer/future?
Hi Chris
Looking for advice.
Great info in this video! I did not know that the craft paints had such nice metallics available. Will have to check some of them out. Thanks.
If you can go to Hobby Lobby and you will be amazed of all the choices.
Good morning Chris
I’ve never used Micro-set or Micro-sol on my decals. I’m thinking of using them for the bigger decals but before I do I was wondering if it would affect the acrylic paints or Pledge clear coats?
Thanks for your help.
Happy building and God bless
Jim
Hello Jim. As long as you have fully cured the pledge you should be okay. I have had no problems. I dip a brush into the solution then dab on a paper towel then apply to model or decal. This way it does not saturate the area.
Thanks Chris 👍
Thanks for the tips Chris! You are a great builder... Amazing models!
1taijeil Thank you so much. I hope they help.
What problems did you run into?
Good job, U got some good work..On that Blue Sapphire what Basecoat did u use..?..Love that color..
Thanks bud. The blue sapphire was folkart sprayed directly on the white body. No base or primer.
Hi, great work
Need some advise, should we use water or special arcylic thinner?
What is the ratio to thin the arcylic paint for airbrush?
Thanks
Hello there.I use the blue windshield fluid washer that you buy for a gallon for less than 2 bucks. Usually it is a 50/50 mix unless you are using Folkart paints. They are thicker and need more washer fluid to paint. Also I use the washer fluid to clean my airbrush, my paint brush and on a q tip and rolled on a towel to clean up over spray and stuff.
@@ChrisChapman195 hi, appreciated your reply. Will give it a try.
Hey Chris great video thanks for posting,Just getting in to air brushing with acrylics do you recommend a primer coat before the acrylic application... thanks
Mike
Welcome to the air brush Mike. I personally do not use primer. this however requires me to make sure the body is perfect prior to painting. But, you have to do the same thing after you prime as well right. So the body has to be perfect for the primer to go on then you need to prep the primer to be perfect for paint. I don't like to waste the time to do it two times lol. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Excellent information. Thanks for all the great info!
You're welcome. I hope it helps and thanks for watching.
That's awesome advise..I am going to go grab an airbrush for sure now. I will be looking at your site a whole lot more now for tips.. THANKS!
Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
great tips chris, i'll have to try acrylics on a future build.
Smokinjoe 311 Thanks Joe. I hope you do. Please let me know how it works out for you.
great tip on the Mop & Shine. which of the many dollar stores did you get this from
I have seen it at the dollar store, general dollar and family dollar
Chris if your still around I've tried to find the Mop & shine at the dollar store & had no luck. Are you still able to find it & if not what is a substitute?
Those paints are the exact ones that I have at home. I am going to have to try this. It sounds great.
Give it a shot. It may take a bit to get used to. My advise is get a test body and paint it. Then go rinse it off in the sink and repaint it. Do this over and over until you get the results to are looking for. It is quite easy once you get it down.
thanks for the tips
Thanks Chris, great tips!
Excellent tips thanks for the video. And great work on those models.
Thanks for the compliments and thank you very much for watching.
IRONSTORM4 . Definitely LOVE classic rock. I will check it out.
Chris Chapman Thanks
+Sweetearth1958 Thank you very much. Ride safe.
I can't believe the results you get using craft acrylics!! Do you have a video that goes more in depth about your mixing process or ratios? I assume you shoot these thru an airbrush?
DarthVeach if you go into my tutorials I have a few videos in there. Thank's for watching.
Have you discovered any difference in winter vs summer formulas? I know the winter has ethyl alcohol to melt ice and I wondered if that affected the paint in any way for better or worse
DarthVeach the alcohol does not work. It causes the paint to curl up and have mass orange peel.
What would you suggest on brush painting a model Car, Tank, airplane.i don't have an air brush and I would like to stay away from enamel Paints for health reasons.I have heard so many different ways that I have no idea how to start, Do you thin with water or thinner, and I see your car it looks great I want all of mine to have a clear shiny finish like the vette in your video,
You do some real nice work. Great tutorial, going to be watching you channel. Your subbed.
Thanks man, been really interested in shooting acrylics, did some test runs this afternoon in fact, appreciate the tips!
@@ChrisChapman195 MinWax is thicker and seems to dry harder................
When you mix your paint with the windshield washer fluid, does the blue of the fluid change the color of your paint? Are you doing a 50/50 ratio?
Awesome vid buddy I would like to see how you mix your paint and those are some sweet rides keep them coming brother
Thanks bud. I am planning on a how I shoot acrylics in the future.
Hello Charles. I am so sorry I just came across this. Not sure how I missed it. Thanks for the info. I will look into the revive it.
heyhey thanx....was jus askin' classic plastic 101 , 'bout that very thing.....I think my only questions are , do you thin th paint w/ th window washing fluid , and is it wax rubbin' out , then future wax applied...and do you hav to rub that out too ??.....otherwise , Great work on all yer builds ...Thanx again.....Robert ☺
Thanks Robert. Yes I thin with washer fluid. I also use it to clean airbrush. I spray the future over the paint and let it dry. Then I polish with novus 2 & 3. Then put on the wax. Thanks again for watching!
Hi Chris
What do you use to clean out your airbrush after using floor polish in it?
BTW... love your videos 👍
I use the blue washer fluid from walmart. And to mix and clean my brushes as well.
Thank you sir
Happy building 🙂
Great video ..every time i walk by the craft paint, l mean to grab some to try it out..are you thinning it down with the floor polish or the windex ?
I usually thin with the windshield washer fluid. To add extra gloss to a paint I use the Mop & Shine. Usually a 50/50 mix.
Thank you.. you have me wanting to really try it now with the shine you have on your cars
Good morning Chris
I sprayed my first acrylic metallic paint this morning and boy did I have an issue getting it to spray.
@@jimkaminski871 25 psi is good for enamel and lacquer. Try dropping it and let me know how it goes.
Thank you sir
I will also adjust my ratio on the metallic paints
Chris Chapman Thanks Chris, really appreciated. Keep up the great work.
you really get the most out of those paints! I will be using these in the future
Cool Andie. It takes a little practice but once you figure it out it is easy. Plus if you mess up go to the sink and rinse it off and start over. Do some test runs on a test body. Paint it rinse it paint rinse it until you get it figured out.
do you use light coats? and do you wait between them?
Great vid. What size needle do you use? Do you do a 1:1 mix with washer fluid?
I use a medium needle for spraying acrylic and floor polish. I mix it at a 1:1 ratio.
Hi Chris
My local dollar store has stopped selling the cloth window wipes. I was wondering if you’re experiencing the same problem and if so what have you changed to? I’m on my last package so I hope you get this soon. 😀
Thanks for your help
Hello Jim, I get them at Walmart and Target as well if you have them around you.
Chris Chapman thanks Chris. I will have the wife check Walmart.
Thanks Chris, will try to thin out the glitter paint a little more then try spraying it.
Thanks!
Do you have tutorial on how you use the Nova 1 and 2?
Chris, If I missed it I apologize. Are you using a primer first and if so what do you recommend when painting with the acrylics?
Thanks,

Hello David. I spray right on the plastic. No primer.

Hi Chris
I have a couple pics to show you what the issue is but I can’t figure out how to attach them to a comment on UA-cam. Any thoughts?
Thank you for this video! After a few coats of that clear, would you say the surface is pretty scratch resistant considering the fact that it's an acrylic paint?

Great tips i really appreciate the time you put into these. Ive been having no luck with craft paints lately, and i really want to master them bc im tired of dumping money into model paints. I cant for the life of me get a smooth finish when painting a body! Its always "pebbly" and looks like it doesnt stick at all to surface. I primed everything. Do you have any tips?

Chris how long can you store paint in the bottle after you mix it
I have acrylics paint mixed and stored from over ten years ago that spray perfectly fine still. I don't think it has an expiration date. That's why I mix them in little containers to use later on.
Wow. Wish I'd seen this sooner, I've got 15 gallons of commercial floor polish rolling around here. I could've really made more paint & clearcoat.!!
Never to late to use it.
Thx for info!!!
Chris can you post a picture of the type of Pledge you are using now?
Thanks a lot!!
Hey Chris can you show a pic of the Pledge floor care product you currently use?
Thanks a lot!
Jim
How do you think the acrylic from craft store to run threw air brush
+Jeff Haty I am assuming you meant how do I thin Acrylics? Here is a video link that shows what I use and how I do it. I also need to make sure you know that LA's Totally awesome mop and shine has changed and is only good for sealing paint with a flat finish. Because of that I use pledge floor care with 2x shine.

Thanks so much for sharing your tips. You got me back into modeling after a 40+ year layoff. So far so good,
I got the acrylics to lay down with no problems.
My goal is to build something that looks half as nice as the builds I've seen on you're channel, so I thought I wood pick your brain a little :>)
THX Chris
+Rick Dono glad to help. Let me know how it goes please.
+Chris Chapman Will do.
is there any difference between the winter an summer washer fluids
Donald Made I use the blue washer fluid from walmart. It has no ammonia in it which will destroy the acrylic paint.
that's what I got was the blue washer fluid from walmart but it has summer formula on it
Do you reduce the clear from Craft Smart and what do you use and what ratio?
I use windshield washer fluid for thinning all my craft acrylic paints. The cheap blue stuff from Walmart. 1.49 a gallon. Lasts forever. Also do a 50/50 mix
tx for the great video, will try it tomorow, second time this month i find another use for futur wax!
Right on. Let me know how it works out for ya.
another great video, thanks for the tips
You got it Daveran. Hope they help and thanks for watching.
Great tips. I have started to use more acrylics because of the cost for other paints.
Good to hear. I like them a lot.
high their i got a q.? on mop and shine have they changed their formula mine is a white color and i tested it on some paint i have always brushed my future on but when i brushed this on it separated ? so i tried it on painted plastic and when it dry ed i had to rub it with a cloth for a medium shine never had to do that before . as i said mine is a white color and it is the same but in a round bottle >
Wish I had a better answer for ya my friend.
okay thank you I'll keep an eye on it if I get any information on my end I'll let you know
Don't forget when you buy at Hobby Lobby they have a 40% off coupon you can get on your phone and can use it on one item per day. I buy most of my kits there and get 40% off every time. That would make the 8oz. bottle of paint about $1.80. The 40% coupon makes a $30. kit about $18. before tax. Also I thin Michaels has a 50% off coupon you can use the same way there.
Thanks for sharing! :-) Grate work!:-)
Thank you Ray!
What about 2 tone pain jobs the taping and sanding

Thanks
fantastic details, im just getting into model airbrushing, i noticed that your video is shimmering?, i guess when you uploaded the video youtube said the video was shaky would you like to fix it, this is why i sayno when it asks, KEEP UP The Good Work
Carl Pattison Thanks for stopping by.
Hope this helps and feel free to ask more if need be.
nice job . but I have to say .the corvette can use a gloss coat
wow!! THANK U. I got your mssg on my comments, but this was great!! very helpful.

Thanks, Cheers for a great video, Thanks Chris
Thank you my friend.
Great info!
You don't use a primer with the acrylics?
I do not. I put extra effort into prepping the body so I spray right on top.
I like your videos. Thy are very helpful and full of good information. Thanks.
Hope they can help Larry. Thanks for watching.
the reason I was asking is your washer fluid says winter formula an only thing walmart has now is summer formula
Oh ok gotcha thanks
great report
Thanks for the tip buddy
Not a problem. I some may help.
Great advice Chris, thanks for sharing and keep doing your Thang!
