I was 2 years old when this fantastic car came out. Maybe that's why I've always been an artist - surrounded by the greatest design art! How could you help but to fall in love with this car?

41 Packard 120 4 door 41Lincoln Zephyr I love Packard's and especially when you feature an unrestored veteran like this beauty. I always find it very interesting to see how well the materials they use when they built it have held up over the decades. Most on this car looked pretty decent except for a couple in the interior that looked somewhat sketchy. Those could quite possibly be hard to find replacements for, but that's part of the fun of restoring an old car sourcing original parts or having reproductions made. Love the practical but elegant design of the Packard automobiles. Sad they went away.
Great choices I totally agree there wasn’t a glove box test cause I couldn’t get the glove box open lol I absolutely love Packards it’s one of my favorite brands I really want to own one one day but if given the choice between a 37 Packard and a 37 Chrysler airflow I’m going to take the Chrysler airflow because it is so different than anything else out there from that time. It’s almost like a Tatra in Ways and I’m a huge fan of the Tatra that’s a car that I’m not going to ever be able to afford But if I ever came across one that I could afford you could bet that I would share it with everybody same thing with the airflow if and when I ever get enough money to buy one I’m going to take it to every car show that I can possibly take it to and share it with as many people as I can because that plant seeds to saving this stuff. People don’t know what they’re missing but they don’t know what they’re missing unless they can feel it for themselves. And honestly that’s why I made this channel because I saw this stuff starting to disappear and we have to keep the information out there for anybody that wants it.
Ditto for me too. The Packard 110 was just a six cylinder car and the 160 is too big for my liking. And as for that second choice, just about nothing beats a Lincoln Zephyr in my book.
Another great episode featuring the 120 beautiful details, Packard quality, . Like the dash on the '40. Wish this one had the rare factory air. Got to see an actual one at a car show and the compressor was huge and the unit in back takes up a lot of the trunk space. First pick the 41 Packard 160, second pick the 41 Cadillac 62 .
One day I would love to find one that has air conditioning and the power windows I saw an advertisement with the power windows and I forgot to include it in this episode but I’m sure we’ll do another 41 or 40 Packard in the future I want to cover all the body styles Great choices too by the way =)

Thanks Justin. Fascinating history of these cars. I love the fact that they are still legal to drive on the road. No doubt they fall into an emission amnesty and rightly so. I would love to go to Pebble Beach etc. in the UK we like our cheap runarounds that do 40 mpg. It take your point about your Honda Civic. It was my first love. I have a bright green VW Polo complete with bondo and none working cassette player. I bought it for £600. Probably not worth the money but it still passes it’s MOT. Love the design cues through the ‘30s and ‘40s. Advertising slogans were so archaic. You couldn’t get away with it now. No black people were ever advertised owning a car and probably few could ever afford one.
Some of those cars got close like bullet nose studebaker around 1950 with a flathead six got 32 Hwy model A could get 20 mpg Nash made some fuel efficient cars. I totally get it I have a runaround car and a van and a classic truck I really wanna get another Classic Car it’s a different driving experience for each vehicle.
I really like the two door sedans I’ve never seen a Packard two door sedan in the wild in Any model.. I also like the four-door sedans rumble seat coupe they didn’t make it bad body style really.. I can’t wait to drive one

The Shriners had cut the roof and doors to make a convertible parade car full of Clowns 🤡🤡🤡.😱😢25 years in the weather had rusted the floor pans and vandalism had got the windshield 😢a little work we got her running, Drove her in to a Stall and cut it up for parts and scrap 🤷 the horror and broken dreams after the gas ⛽ crisis 😭💔... Happy Motoring ✌️
That was a horror story.. there are two more Packards in the pipeline as of now one is a Henny flower car which is really cool I think that might be the next one the next Packard anyway probably next week sometime.. or later this week Haven’t really decided yet

Further, I hadn't realised that Packard in 1941 was offering two quite different body types - the one shown here being the old fashioned body for the old money, and the stylistically up to date Clipper for the new money. It was probably a sensible move. Cheers.
Looks very original but it would be a candidate for a complete rotisserie restoration. With 3D printed components now being available, I hope the dashboard hardware could be made out of more durable material than such primitive plastic.
......thanks for the vid.....all great cars, but I'd pick the 160 and the 3 window coupe Lincoln....although Packard and Cadillac engines and build quality were superior to the troublesome Zephyr V-12, the '36-'42 Zephyrs were outstanding......the '41 Zephyr was in its 6th production year and was still markedly more modern and aerodynamic than Packard or Cadillac, BTW, I'd Take the "41 Packard Clipper #2 if you had offered it......

I absolutely love Packards never see them at car shows anymore and it bothers me actually you don’t really around here I don’t really see anything from the 30s except for model A’s.. which is super sad
I have been a fan of the 1941 Packard 110 Deluxe for a long time. It is the same car as the 120 except it has a six cylinder engine. The basic 110 is pretty bare bones.
Like others are saying, this car is a work of art. The front end, the hood ornament. It's also fun to see these unrestored models. For WYR, I'd go for the Packard 120, and the Lincoln Zephyr.
The '41 models are OK but for my money, the 1940 Packards represent one of the company's high water marks. I grew up with a 1939 Super 8 Victoria in the garage. Dad owned that car for 59 years.
I totally agree I like 37 to 39 the most.. but to me they didn’t make it bad looking car from 1934 until 1942 after the war they kind of lost their way. But if I ever have the opportunity to buy a Caribbean I totally well those cars are epic especially the 55 and 56.

Because most cars way back when had pontoon front fenders and the engines were buried inside, overhead creepers were a must. You can still buy new ones today. Because they insist on covering everything up under the hood with fancy covers, the engines themselves are kinda getting buried again. Now with thinner metal all over the cars, especially the front fenders and different types of materials, like aluminum and plastics, it is even more important not to lean on or push body panels in modern cars today. So, there is a renewed need for overhead creepers. Now, I learned the hard way, but even Japanese cars, like the Datsun "Z" cars could be damaged in unassuming areas by leaning on or pushing. We always had to watch out and be careful with the Italian cars, like Ferrari's, etc, if you sneeze on them wrong you can dent them, but then, sh*t still happens. Now, those old cars, like this vintage of Packard, you can probably stand on those front fenders and not damage them! The reason that there is no transmission tunnel in cars like these Packards is because the cars are so massive, and looking at the engine, how low it is mounted in the chassis, so is the rest of the drive train. There was no need for a tunnel. It is interesting that you mentioned front wheel drive cars and the tunnels. Well lot's of them have tunnels eventhough there is no drive shaft nor a transmission. Because many cars are built for multiple types of drive systems, they may still have a tunnel, and they use it. An empty tunnel is a great place to run the exhaust systems. It doesn't have to run under anyone's feet. You are too young to have seen it the first time around, but, as you know, Oldsmobile introduced the revolutionary front wheel drive Toronado in 1966. They advertised it as having a floor as flat as your living room floor. Eventhough there was no drivetrain tunnel, they still ran the exhaust system down the middle on the front wheel drive cars. Luckily I caught it in time, but I was working on a front wheel drive 2nd generation Cadillac Seville. The engine had multiple misses. This superheats the catalytic converters(which is why the check engine light flashes on the OBD II later model cars when there is a problem like the one I had). I happened to look inside the car and noticed smoke coming up from the carpet on the front floor! Luckily I caught it before it started on fire and it didn't do any permanent damage. The cause of the missing was that a mechanic at our shop didn't tighten the spark plugs when he changed them the day before. I discovered it just by chance when I noticed the spark plugs giggling as the engine missed. Tightening them all up fixed it.
I like the bustle trunk on the '40 more than the trunk on the '41 for some reason. I just can't get over today's cost for what you would get versus what 27K will ACTUALLY get you now at a dealer. 2 questions. Does the glass on hood ornament light up? And, this isn't just a Packard thing, but why did cars back then have a separate lever for overdrive, instead of just adding a 4th or 5th gear to the transmission? 1) No real preference. They're all beautiful. 2) Packards are sah-weet, and I'm not a Caddy dude, but... but... that Caddy, style wise, is freaking gorgeous!
That Packard hood ornament doesn’t light up Indian Pontiac Indian chiefs did and some other companies as well Hudson had a light up emblem at one point.. For the overdrive I think it was cheaper to produce it outside the transmission it’s not part of the actual transmission it’s a separate unit to my knowledge it mounts behind the transmission.. Packard did have a four-speed at this point but it was more or less for higher up models.. and it was a synchromesh unit as well here’s one for you that they used to do in the 30s all the time and why they don’t do it now is beyond me some cars like the auburn speedster was offered with a two speed rear end meaning you can change the final drive ratio on the fly making your top speed increase or get better gas mileage, because of an overdrive unit can cut engine speed by a third just imagine what you could do with a rear end gear just imagine if you had 373s and 290s or if you could figure out a way or anybody can figure out a way to make every revolution of the crankshaft be to revolutions at the rear end you’ll be getting quadruple gas mileage. Because with every turn of the crankshaft the wheel will move to revolutions which would be insane but nobody has figured that out I can’t believe we’re not working on that problem..
WYR1: One Ten. The 2023 neighbors won't know the difference. A;so worth consideration in this price class would be the Studebaker President Land Cruiser or the Hupp Skylark or the non-supercharged Graham, these last two built on the 1936 Cord 810 body stampings. WYR2" Again. the Packard with the Studebaker, Hupp, or Graham also under consideration. The leaf spring solid axle front suspension in the Lincoln would be a deal-breaker, and I just don't like the Cadillac styling. Any further comments about the Lincoln or the Cadillac, I would recommend googling the pictures of the hearse that carried Henry Ford to his final reward.
Obviously, the car is in need of a complete body off restoration to do it justice. That said, even in its present condition it still has a prestige that today's cars will never have. I'll take the Packard 160 and the Lincoln.
The 120 did not replace the Light Eight - the Light Eight was a much more expensive car, and it was a fairly tentative step at offering a cut price Packard. It was also a money loosing cannibal. The 120 was their effort at mass produciton, bringing in new engineering, new sales tactics, new marketing, etc. "We have an Episcopalian reputation and we want to do business with the Methodists". So they did. The 1938 'Eight' was a 120, they just played with nomenclature (Likewise the 'Super 8' that year was really just an 8 - confusing). Excellent cars though by 41 styling was dated (we see it now as classic, and I prefer it over say a 41 Cadillac). Of course the Clipper changed all that in a truly stunning way. This one needs a lot of cosmetics, you wonder about the mechanicals. WYR: Obviously the 160, second scenario - probably the Cadillac - it was a step, maybe step and a half above the 120, and while the 120 has more presence, the Cadillac was more modern in many ways.

You got me - the Airflow. There was a video of a 3-car caravan from San Diego to a National meet, and going thru Utah, I think it was - stunning country - the camera showed this 5,000# car, which dyno-ed at 88 hp, cruising at a rock-steady 85 mph.@@What.its.like.
I want to cover an air flow before the end of the year so so so bad.. I really really want to drive one.. they are just so unique and so different than anything else that was available at that time it’s almost like an American Tatra instead of having a flathead V-8 it has a straight though and the De Soto aren’t bad either and I saw I won this year at the Gilmore auto museum and I was just drooling all over it I I love those cars I have an addiction to weird cars the weirder the better
Chrysler engineering was on a par with Packard, tho' the cars just didn't 'have it' 'til mid-1950's. I was with Mama when she bought a 1950 Dodge Coronet Deluxe. It was a 6 but would easily cruise at 60-65..Then the 1951 Chrysler Crown Imperial with the epic Hemi...THAT was a car!

Your year equivalents for price are way off base. It appears you are using a simplistic CPI conversion which ignores the fact that the average price of a vehicle has increased markedly (hooray, Detroit). The 120 is a middle-class car, which today would be running in the low $40,000; not ~$27,500.

The reason that there is no transmission tunnel in cars like these Packards is because the cars are so massive, and looking at the engine, how low it is mounted in the chassis, so is the rest of the drive train. There was no need for a tunnel.
It is interesting that you mentioned front wheel drive cars and the tunnels. Well lot's of them have tunnels eventhough there is no drive shaft nor a transmission. Because many cars are built for multiple types of drive systems, they may still have a tunnel, and they use it. An empty tunnel is a great place to run the exhaust systems. It doesn't have to run under anyone's feet.
You are too young to have seen it the first time around, but, as you know, Oldsmobile introduced the revolutionary front wheel drive Toronado in 1966. They advertised it as having a floor as flat as your living room floor. Eventhough there was no drivetrain tunnel, they still ran the exhaust system down the middle on the front wheel drive cars. Luckily I caught it in time, but I was working on a front wheel drive 2nd generation Cadillac Seville. The engine had multiple misses. This superheats the catalytic converters(which is why the check engine light flashes on the OBD II later model cars when there is a problem like the one I had). I happened to look inside the car and noticed smoke coming up from the carpet on the front floor! Luckily I caught it before it started on fire and it didn't do any permanent damage. The cause of the missing was that a mechanic at our shop didn't tighten the spark plugs when he changed them the day before. I discovered it just by chance when I noticed the spark plugs giggling as the engine missed. Tightening them all up fixed it.

I like the bustle trunk on the '40 more than the trunk on the '41 for some reason. I just can't get over today's cost for what you would get versus what 27K will ACTUALLY get you now at a dealer. 2 questions. Does the glass on hood ornament light up? And, this isn't just a Packard thing, but why did cars back then have a separate lever for overdrive, instead of just adding a 4th or 5th gear to the transmission? 1) No real preference. They're all beautiful. 2) Packards are sah-weet, and I'm not a Caddy dude, but... but... that Caddy, style wise, is freaking gorgeous!
That Packard hood ornament doesn’t light up Indian Pontiac Indian chiefs did and some other companies as well Hudson had a light up emblem at one point..
For the overdrive I think it was cheaper to produce it outside the transmission it’s not part of the actual transmission it’s a separate unit to my knowledge it mounts behind the transmission.. Packard did have a four-speed at this point but it was more or less for higher up models.. and it was a synchromesh unit as well
here’s one for you that they used to do in the 30s all the time and why they don’t do it now is beyond me some cars like the auburn speedster was offered with a two speed rear end meaning you can change the final drive ratio on the fly making your top speed increase or get better gas mileage, because of an overdrive unit can cut engine speed by a third just imagine what you could do with a rear end gear just imagine if you had 373s and 290s or if you could figure out a way or anybody can figure out a way to make every revolution of the crankshaft be to revolutions at the rear end you’ll be getting quadruple gas mileage. Because with every turn of the crankshaft the wheel will move to revolutions which would be insane but nobody has figured that out I can’t believe we’re not working on that problem..

The 2023 price equivalent of the '41 Packard One Twenty is about the price of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek base model with six-speed.

WYR1: One Ten. The 2023 neighbors won't know the difference. A;so worth consideration in this price class would be the Studebaker President Land Cruiser or the Hupp Skylark or the non-supercharged Graham, these last two built on the 1936 Cord 810 body stampings.
WYR2" Again. the Packard with the Studebaker, Hupp, or Graham also under consideration. The leaf spring solid axle front suspension in the Lincoln would be a deal-breaker, and I just don't like the Cadillac styling.
Any further comments about the Lincoln or the Cadillac, I would recommend googling the pictures of the hearse that carried Henry Ford to his final reward.
Obviously, the car is in need of a complete body off restoration to do it justice. That said, even in its present condition it still has a prestige that today's cars will never have. I'll take the Packard 160 and the Lincoln.
Yeah it needs some TLC but with that said can still see what a beautiful car it still is and was built solid

The 120 did not replace the Light Eight - the Light Eight was a much more expensive car, and it was a fairly tentative step at offering a cut price Packard. It was also a money loosing cannibal. The 120 was their effort at mass produciton, bringing in new engineering, new sales tactics, new marketing, etc. "We have an Episcopalian reputation and we want to do business with the Methodists". So they did. The 1938 'Eight' was a 120, they just played with nomenclature (Likewise the 'Super 8' that year was really just an 8 - confusing). Excellent cars though by 41 styling was dated (we see it now as classic, and I prefer it over say a 41 Cadillac). Of course the Clipper changed all that in a truly stunning way. This one needs a lot of cosmetics, you wonder about the mechanicals. WYR: Obviously the 160, second scenario - probably the Cadillac - it was a step, maybe step and a half above the 120, and while the 120 has more presence, the Cadillac was more modern in many ways.

You got me - the Airflow. There was a video of a 3-car caravan from San Diego to a National meet, and going thru Utah, I think it was - stunning country - the camera showed this 5,000# car, which dyno-ed at 88 hp, cruising at a rock-steady 85 mph.@@What.its.like.
I want to cover an air flow before the end of the year so so so bad.. I really really want to drive one.. they are just so unique and so different than anything else that was available at that time it’s almost like an American Tatra instead of having a flathead V-8 it has a straight though and the De Soto aren’t bad either and I saw I won this year at the Gilmore auto museum and I was just drooling all over it I I love those cars I have an addiction to weird cars the weirder the better

Chrysler engineering was on a par with Packard, tho' the cars just didn't 'have it' 'til mid-1950's. I was with Mama when she bought a 1950 Dodge Coronet Deluxe. It was a 6 but would easily cruise at 60-65..Then the 1951 Chrysler Crown Imperial with the epic Hemi...THAT was a car!

Your year equivalents for price are way off base. It appears you are using a simplistic CPI conversion which ignores the fact that the average price of a vehicle has increased markedly (hooray, Detroit). The 120 is a middle-class car, which today would be running in the low $40,000; not ~$27,500.
