Hey Jay, the tail lights had a dual purpose where you can flip the lights up so you can drive with tailgate down and still have visible brake lights. Enjoy the videos keep it up
They made a different style of those tail lights later on where they were fixed on the sides I like that style better that’s what I was getting at they just didn’t look natural. Glad you dig this channel
They were a novelty, but would like to see how they function.
@@What.its.like. Thru 1952 all the wagon Tailgate Tail lights moved to be shown with gate down, Starting in 1953 is when they became part of the quarter panel.
Funny thing Pontiac had 2 tail lights and the Chevy only had 1 single light.

Pontiac made some epic wagons this is my favorite era of Pontiac
I still have home movies of the adults wearing suits and dresses for a day trip to Yosemite in their 1956 Cadillac. Lots of class back then.
Yeah it’s amazing how much culture has changed also just how downright disrespectful people are to people in uniform it’s absolutely amazing everything is completely backwards from what it used to be
Craftsmanship was out of this world ! Don’t think i will ever see that again in my life time :( . These individuals cared some much building automobiles , yes new cars are very safe and they haul ass like hell , but however , i’m not in a hurry . New cars are , for the look that is , boring inside and out ! But it’s only my opinion , i’m old anyway , well done Jay , what a treat ❤
Thank you so much for digging this episode the greatest part about living in this time. Is you have the choice to choose what you want to drive I have appliance cars as well as classic cars I drive the appliance cars when I know I have someplace to be and don’t want to spend a whole lot of money on gas but the days that I wanna drive to town in my truck there are days like that where I just want to try something different and not lose my vehicle in the parking lot I take the truck.. One day I hope to own multiple vehicles Classic Cars and if I ever get to that point I’m going to share them with everybody. Just like I share my truck =)
One day I’d love to have a car shows up here and make it free to everybody just to prove that it can be done.

Totally agree with the simplicity comments! I'm still driving a 2008 vehicle by choice because new cars have gotten ridiculous. I don't want touchscreens, I don't want controls that suddenly disappear because I shifted into reverse! I want knobs and buttons that are always there, always in the same place, and I can recognize by feel, so I don't have to take my eyes off the road to operate! All the issues with distracted driving we have, and yet the car companies are now building distractions into the designs! Bunch of BS in my opinion!

Amen. And one of the main reasons (probably THE main reason) for the fact that cars have become unaffordable is that they are absolutely stuffed to the gills with sophisticated electronics. If a carmaker built a small, basic car, and made it mechanical instead of electronic, it wouldn’t cost very much and they’d probably sell millions of them.
Dang, remember the days when primo vehicles were legitimately affordable?! Great work on this one! So cool!

I’m 34 I’m a lot older than I look which isnt a bad problem to have, I have always been into these cars from a young age and it’s always been the orphan cars if I ever came into money I would have a bunch of orphan cars. I really am into the 30s cars now I love Packards I would love to own a 37 Chrysler airflow one day I just love the unusual. I can’t be the only person in this age group that digs this stuff and wanted to channel like this to explain all of the cars for people that want to get one of these cars

That’s awesome I wish I had pictures of every single car that I owned that’s going to be an episode one day when the base gets bigger.. i’ve own 36 cars I can tell you which ones were great and which ones was it in my top five very interesting out of the cars that I’ve owned.. It’s worth mentioning that all of the vehicles that I owned are down to earth vehicles that anybody could own

My dad really loved Woodies and would often point them out at car shows he took me to as a kid. Never dawned on me that cars were made mostly from all wood for a time. I learned proper later.

This is such a cool classic. I prefer the '47 to the '48. To me the embossed lines on the fenders add to the streamline motif. I'd choose the 1948 Pontiac Woody Wagon and the Pontiac Sedanette. I agree with you about sedanettes.
I’ve been looking for a sedanette they are so gorgeous and they’re just getting harder and harder to find like everything else..
This is my favorite of Pontiac. I love the silver streak era lots of bright work, epic cars with the Indian chief, that lights up

and also a few notes on the chicken wire you mentioned.
Seeing that the Roswell UFO crash happened in 1947 and that vehicle is a 1948. I believe they put the chicken wire in those cars to keep the aliens from reading the minds of their human owners. At least that's what I've heard.
That said. I think it's more probable that it was to hold cotton batting which was used on the top so they could stretch that leather or vinyl material tightly and the wire reinforced it. Sometimes the chicken wire was also put in there as shielding for the radios. Sometimes as the antenna top. Quite possibly both.
On a hot day one can sympathize with any passengers that had to ride all the way back in that third seat. It had to have been sweltering back there. I mean they could have at least put some swing out wing windows or something back there.

Great videos of the Ford convertible and Pontiac wagon. Keep asking for those comments. Cant please everyone, we're here to learn from each other and have fun. Looking forward to the 41 Caddy,, my favorite year of 40's Cadillacs , with the 60 Special on top. On the chicken wire under the roof, some cars with a fabric roof, they connected the radio antenna wire to the chicken wire and used it for a hidden antenna. Like the view from the 3rd row, not comfortable on a long ride for an adult.
I would rather have the Mercury wagon but with the rare Marmon-Herrington 4X4 conversion, beats any modern crossover, but the Hudson would be a close second for the rarity. On the sedanette the Chevy I grew up around a lot of those.
Thank you so much I actually went back and watched it I don’t I didn’t ask for comments the only time I ever did was if you wanted to get in touch with me I make it really easy to interact with me because I’m different than all the other people out there.. idk I tried to run this channel as if I was if you were watching this channel what would I want from the presenter or host or person who does these videos. Just raised different I guess. I try to treat people how I’d like to be treated. I am realizing that it’s impossible to please everybody even though I try to find a nice happy medium it’s impossible.
Honestly that’s why I love this channel so much is because it’s not about everything that I say but a lot of times a lot of useful information that is getting lost the time is revealed in the comment section. There is a lot of information that just isn’t on the Internet but the people that have lived through it know it because they’ve experienced it.

The third row wasn’t that bad I was in a wagon once were the third row wasn’t a comfortable seat I think that was in the 47 Chevy fleet master I could be wrong though it had stadium seats as well

The gm fastback era was an awesome era they didn’t make a bad design the other crazy thing is the Pontiac had two fast backs the torpedo body ones and streamliner..

I wouldn't _want_ it, though it's such a beautiful execution, I can't help but admire it.
Top speeds of 40's/50's car just so indicative of what you could really do on the roads of that day. Most were 2 lane, you might get a 4 lane and the Pensylvania Turnpike ('America's first Superhighway') arrived in 1940. You were not crusing at 70 mph. Today I had a drive up VA/MD Eastern shore, and then headed west back toward DC. Light traffic, 180 miles with decent segments done at 85, and just touching 100 a number of times. All safe and secure with no driving dramatics - and getting 24.5 mpg overall - including later Beltway congestion. Our vehicle tech has come much further than our road systems (and average driver competence). Kinda surprised those taillights weren't swing down on rods so they would be visible when the deck is lowered. Almost sure they were on a Series 76 Olds I remember, but then was a 49, so different body. WYR: 1) 47 Hudson, super rare, 2) 48 Cad (first fins, unique dash)
Great choices. I agree you don’t have all the theatrics that you have in a classic car or truck, because they don’t drive or handle like new cars and aren’t insulated like new cars either.. honestly believe everyone should have to drive one at one point.

I love wagons and woodies are cool there is a ford in the pipeline everything’s gonna get moved around a little bit I think we’re going to vote for Tuesday my neighbor has a vehicle that I want to shoot so when you vote for Tuesday it’s going to be an episode on exotic cars.. or cars not made in the USA.

Wow, love all of the woody wagons, I need to look at the other 2 before I make my decision but the inside of the Pontiac is so pretty its like a really nice classic boat. Then either the Chevy or the Olds, need to look inside to make the choice.

My mouth is watering - Mmm mm - A WOODY WAGON! I always wanted to own a real Woody Station Wagon classic car, but they were always waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond my budgetary constraints. I grew up in Huntington Beach, California. I am a beach baby. ( I also love power boats and big cruisers. ) My life as a teenager was all about the beach scene, surfers, crazy hippies, and happenings. While not that common in the 60s, there were some Woody Wagons that occasionally showed up at the beach. ( Moon Doggy never showed ) Mostly, it was VWs, the late 50s, and 60s cars. Plenty of ordinary station wagons galore. Some panel wagons too. Many teenage kids did NOT have their own car and resorted to borrowing a car from their parents or having a friend who did have a car, pick them up, and they would do whatever it was they planned on doing.
Cars like this Pontiac that is shown here - were considered, "The Clark W Griswold, family vacation sport truckster"
of that era as families were keen to go Vactioning and Sight Seeing in the National Parks. Families had options available to them regarding where to stay along the way. You could pull a luxurious Spartanette Mansion Travel Trailer, stay at a roadside motor lodge or travel motels, or splurge and stay at resorts. ( Remember, Nobody puts Baby in a Corner! ) Some folks may have wanted to pitch a tent someplace and "roughed it" with the skeeters `n flies as well as seeking a place to pop a squat and let `er rip in the bushes. Watch out for Poison Ivy and Oak!!! Stinging Nettles are a pain in the rear too!
That rear seat in the Woody Wagon was where you'd stuff gear and luggage packed tightly and then have 'DINKY" the family pet dog lay or sit with it! " Oh NO, the dog peed on the sandwiches! "
Back then, 10 to 14 mpg was considered normal for a straight-eight-powered, passenger car of this type. It would have been significantly lower than that if pulling a big travel trailer. However, during this time, leaded gasoline was about 17 -19 cents a gallon. Stopping about every 200 miles or less to fill up, get refreshments, relieve those gophering turds, rinse faces and hands, stretch and walk around a while, look at the map, and see how you've gone and how much further you have to go. ("Hey Kids, only 475 miles to go yet. We'll have another good ole fun family gathering in the ole Tipee Tonight!" Then it rains cats and dogs all night long ) You load up and tame the squabbling kids over who is going to sit next to windows on this leg of the journey to Hell - then you start up Cheif Pontiacs Woody Wagon, put it into gear, and sojourn on.
Camping while traveling was NEVER MY BAG! To me, roughing it, is in a five-star hotel, with a great view and exemplary room service! Plus, valet parking.
Yes, the mental image of and the idea of owning a Woody Wagon to drive to Southern California beaches seemed like it would have been so cool to do. Maybe it was, back in the heyday of Beach and Surf music, bikini-wearing girls who had some modesty still, and boys weren't licentious pervy stalkers and debauchers. Maybe again, you could trust people to leave your vehicle alone and not mess around with or steal the hub caps and beauty rings, or key the side of the car because of rabid jealousy! But, NOT TODAY! Nope, you need an armed guard nowadays to protect and watch over any classic car parked in public spaces. You do not dare to take your eyes off it for one second.
Then there's the fawning and tender loving care you must give to an antique car, especially so with a Woody Wagon. These are rare vehicles, and today cost a barge load of Fort Knox's finest. Today, I for one could not afford it. Neat vestige to another more carefree era though.
Thank you so much for all of that information and stories I’m not much into camping either to be quite honest my wife wants to get a camper that you pull behind a truck or one of them gigantic ones that you drive down the road and that’s not really my cup of tea.. rVs to me is just a different way of spelling boat or bust out another thousand. I’ve never been the type of person to have a lot of money so I never really wanted to do that but I always wanted to get an old wagon and drive cross country and stop and see all the little towns I think that would be really cool.

I would take that Hudson Woodie wagon hands down, but its not a '48 model year Jay but rather a '42, which was the last year that the Hudson Motor Company ever made the woodie wagon available for public consumption. They did make a few however, like 3 or 4, 1946 Hudson Woodies for use around their automotive plant. You did a feature on the 1941 Hudson Woodie just a little while ago, and it is indeed a rare wagon, but only four 1942 Hudson Woodies are known to survive and one of those is in very poor shape while another is a total restoration job with very few original parts. So that '42 Hudson pictured above is very rare indeed and also very valuable, which is certainly one good reason to choose it! 😊

Okay, I really like this car, but I would choose the '48 Mercury Woodie wagon. I just like the front end a little better...and you can slide the rear glass.
And I would go for the '48 Cadillac.
This looks like it is a comfortable car to sit in. And like all the other '48 Woodie wagons you've done I love the wood headliner! I can almost smell the wood myself watching this. Maintenance, though, must have been a bear...if people back then even bothered. But it is beautiful.
I have to agree about the taillights, though. They almost look like an afterthought, like "we forgot something... that's right, the taillights! Just throw them on someplace..."

About those rear lights, they stick out because they were hinged, so that if you were hauling something that required the tailgate to be left down, the lights could rotate so as to still be functional.

You found another nice Joisey car! Last of the pre-war designs. Would rather have the Merc wagon.Flathead power plant and nicer looking car (in my opinion). The Chevy Fleetline is my favorite body style of this era, but the Caddy gets an honorable mention with the baby fins!🏆

If you had done a two hour video on this car, I’d have watched every minute. It’s just drop dead gorgeous. I tend like big luxury cars, but 1940s Pontiac styling was just primo. The way those streamlined offenders fold into each other always amazed me, too. They are a beautiful piece of engineering and styling.
I agree with the comment about the tail lights. As somebody else mentioned, these move, but even the side mounted ones have a tendency to look a bit too “industrial.” It really wouldn’t have been too difficult for a car maker to ship some sort of streamlined side mounted light to be used on all the finished wagons. But they never asked me. 😂
Round one goes to the beautiful Pontiac, and round two goes to the Cadillac. It’s all about the tail light. Business in the front, party in the back. 🎉

The lights look like hooves to some buff horse I just never got why they put them there they look like an afterthought not to say that there’s anything wrong with the way that they did it, they were classier later on
Hi Jay!: That Pontiac woody is a honey! I've got a personal preference for the 1947 model, because there was one in my hometown when I was a kid. Can't remember the body style, but it was really neat looking with those chrome or stainless stripes on the fenders!
Gotta to with the Hudson for the woody wagon I would like. That is a really neat body style! AS for the sedanette, gotta go with Buick. Guess the fact that my Mom and Dad had a 1950 Buick Roadmaster Sedanette when I was born in the mid 1960's might just lean me toward those. Dad always used to say I was almost born in that Buick! Mom kept wanting him to stop, but he didn't until they got to the hospital! Keep up the great work Jay! You are letting people see these cars with original engines, instead of EVERYTHING having a small block Chevy shoved into it! Who's going to know in the next 100 years what these cars are REALLY like, if everyone wants to try and make MODERN cars out of them??
Great choices =) I want to cover a sedanette like nobody’s business. I’ve been looking I love the 50s sedanettes and earlier ones too honestly don’t think that they made a body style for that style car.

My grandparents had a 1947 sedan. It was the only car they bought new. Replace the year I was born with a used 1954 Cadillac.

Magnificent car and really loaded with options‼ I alwAys preferred the 1948 Mercury styling so I'd like to see that reviewed. We already know from experience with the Cadillac Sedanette that I am going to be complaining about no radio or heater! Let's try the Buick. There are several Chevrolet low riders here in Houston of that vintage. They are AWESOME in a parade. Thanks J; I missed a few while traveling but I will catch up soon..

Tail lamps were made so they could be angled out for whey tailgate is down.
I would have ordered my 1948 Pontiac with the newly-available Hydra-Matic. With the smooth & quiet straight-8 engine, it would have really purred. On top speeds----drivers of this era would take their cars out on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which had no speed limit for awhile after it opened in 1940, & claim they "could hit 80 mph." Of course that was speedometer indicated, as my Grandfather claimed for his 1939 Chevrolet.
Oh man that’s awesome especially the part with the Pennsylvania Turnpike not having a speed limit I think they should go back to that honestly a cop should camp out to see if anybody is in the left-hand lane not passing anybody because those people are the ones that caused the accidents

This wagon is a 48 Pontiac, Silver Streak, Streamliner Standard, eight. (Ain't that a mouthful?) You can tell that it is a Standard by the lack of mouldings on the front fenders and doors and the black rubber stone guards. The extra front bumper guards are options/accessories.
Yes this one is the standard version I laid out the differences of the deluxe version which this doesn’t have

I like the name that tune segment it gets everybody involved and also when the tune gets name brings back memories of when you heard that song some people don’t like it because they think it’s tacky but I think it’s a really good part of the episode.

Can't help but think how much handsomer this car would look with black wall tires. But, man of the stalwart, long-term, now-retired-and-into-the-hobby guys demand fat whitewalls, which look like giant marshmallows to me, ever since a buddy suggested that. 😉

Hi Jay. I understand that there are a small number of woody body builders operating in the US. Woodies didn't last well through the years, and I'd guess that of the woodies you see in this condition, the greater proportion would have been rebodied.
I agree 100% I wonder how many times the wood has been replaced a lot of times

Love the car, but you would need to be a finish carpenter to take care of it. I had a 1954 Pontiac Chieftan Deluxe with the hydramatic.
Totally agree I will build cabinets on the side and it would take a lot of work/you would have to know what you’re doing for wood conditioning.. lots of different types of wood/different species of wood and they all are different and would require a climate controlled storage facility.

I’ve bought a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and I was looking to get bumpers made and that’s what they called the over riders or the cross sections on the bumpers that’s what they called them and I always thought that that’s what they were called

All 48 Pontiacs were called Silver Streak, be they Torpedo or Streamliner, six or eight, standard or de luxe. If you are not confused yet, I can give you further information. LOL.
Some people thought silver streak meant deluxe is what I was getting at Silver streak was 8 also silver streak 6

Were these wagons available as a “non-woody”? If not when did they become available?
I thought about doing an episode on Woody wagons and talking about why when maybe one day I was under the in Sumption of water wagon came into affect because there was a lot of metal in those bodies and they couldn’t supply the metal material because of the war that was going on I believe it was World War I at the time.. I could be wrong though they started figuring out the real wood bodies by 1950..

It was woody wagons or no wagon up until 1950.. to my knowledge there were a couple companies that were outliers that didn’t do an all wood body like Willys used steel and painted it to look like wood

1950 is when they go back to making steel wagons they have wooden wagons but most of it simulated wood by that point.. the chevys did the tin woodys They were still wagons but looked like Woody wagons

I really like your videos and I always click 'like'. But your constant asking for comments, is getting out of hand. I dread hearing it. It is intrusive and oppressive. This is a car community it’s different than all the other channels because I like the involvement of the community.. in other words this channel cares about what it’s being said about the viewer... I’m sorry that’s an aspect that you don’t like. I’m not changing that aspect. It gives the audience a voice as well.. which is what I would want if I was a viewer a car channel that actually gets back to me when I comment so many don’t do that

And there isn't a single community based channel that DOESN'T disallow comments..... And remember Jay, you haven't always asked us as often as you do now, for comments. And I can't believe that viewers contact you requesting that they be prompted to leave comments.
If this is a revenue raising initiative, then that's absolutely fine by me. But don't dress it up as something unique or viewer led, because it isn't.

But it is unique because a lot of those channels never get back to their base like this channel does, if I wasn’t genuinely curious about your opinion I wouldn’t ask. Honestly the only reason I ask is because I have a curiosity about a certain thing I’m not looking for anything other than that I don’t think I asked more than three times in this episode which is the going rate in all of the episodes previous. Which do you like better 47 or 48 name that tune and would you rather.. and if there’s something during the body of the episode that I’m not sure of their all points in which I’m honestly curious about your opinions.. I just love giving the audience a chance to share their experiences. And maybe I have been saying post your experiences in the comment section below more often it’s an invite lots of channels don’t give you that opportunity to share your experiences I just wanted everybody to feel welcome. I’m a different type of person lots of other people might do it for some sort of side motive.. I’m not like that I genuinely care.. and when I say I’m a regular car guy that’s what I am I’m just a regular guy.
