I recommend the Lifan KP Mini. Probably the best Grom clone from China. My 2006 LF 200 GY5 bought new is running fine in 2024 and has needed oil changes, valve adjustments, tires, and batteries. That is it . Nothing ever fell off, it has NEVER left me stranded. Lifan does in fact have a pretty successful racing team, and have for years.

Know a guy that ran a hawk 250 for close to 5 years doing farm work. Never did any work to it, never even changed the oil. Only reason he quit using it was the mice chewed through the wiring harness one winter and never bothered fixing it.

I had a 250cc dual sport from Amazon called the magician for about 1400$. I put about 3-5k miles on it.
The only issues I had were the speedometer stoped working and the stock carb runs lean. I replaced the carb with an aftermarket one. That thing ripped pretty good and I only sold it once I upgraded to a Honda rebel. All the 250cc China engines use the same basic design of the older Honda motorcycles. I dropped that thing a few times since it was my first bike but I’m glad I dropped that instead of my newer bikes. I sold it for 800$ a few months later but I think it was definitely worth it.

The X-PRO X25 has some similarities with the 1967 Honda S90 that introduced me to the sport of motorcycling. That bike was a blast. There was a sharp little dropoff in a gravel back road just back of where I lived. I used to hit it about 45 mph and get some decent air. I used to chase cows on it, and on wet grass full lock slides were easily doable, just like a dirt tracker. The most fun thing was chasing rabbits in the field behind the house at night. The rabbits would always get away. They'd lead me over a ground hog hole, and my front wheel would sink into the hole, and the engine would stall. Rabbits are smart little bastards - smarter than me anyway. Of course the Grom is just a slightly miniaturized version of the same machine

I own the Xpro X25. It requires a bit of maintenance here and there, especially with the suspension, but the motor is solid as a rock. That thing is an absolute blast, especially when going 30mph feels like going 60 haha.

Papa Yam had me laughing hard with a couple of the video snips. His conclusion I agree with. I found a barn find 2015 Suzuki S40 with 525 miles and towed it off for $1500. A causal week of draining the tank, carb cleaning, tire inspecting and general cleaning and fluids change and I have a wonderful running bike that is reliable and likely worth more than I paid for it. But I am not selling it because it is the perfect hopper bike. Sounds perfect with a HD stock Dyna muffler on it. If a zombie hoard was headed to my neighborhood, I would much rather take the trusty Suzuki than any Chinese Amazon bike and I paid a lot less with a little elbow effort. A used UJM is definitely the way to go!

I have to admit, I’ve been eyeing China bikes because of the exact people they market to - young people who haven’t ridden before.
Brother bought a hawk and had good experience with it. Only 600 miles so far but no issues and he really likes it. I got the Lifan KPX250. Hasn’t arrived yet.
Curious if you have heard of the KPX 250?

As a new ish rider I bought the Hawk 250 ( @8:07 ). I had to replace and check almost everything on the bike (had a few things fall off XD) and I had to learn a lot to fix it, took about a month to get it ready to ride without worrying about the bike falling apart. But in the end I've put $2k into it and driven it 2k miles driving almost every day (on light gravel or dirt trails and non highway roads) and its served me well for what I bought it for.

Well. Now they have electric scooters. Guess what. Its the only form of transportation that works out of the box. From China. Without issues. I bought one for 2k. Goes 60mph. Has 4 modes. Economy gets you 79 miles on a full charge.
Just check your state laws for ridability on streets. Stable and comfortable. I had no problems with setup. It has offroad suspension too.
Instructions warn not to ride in water/rain. I took a look at their cheap electronic display. Not water resistant at all. It was the only negative I could find. Handle bar and brake lights/turn signal lights were the only thing that needed to be installed. Not even a problem. They also supplied the tools. I checked everything else out for tightness. Headlights needed to be adjusted and tightened down. It came with four small projectable headlights. Almost everything was predone. Base of scooter has led lights in it. Lights up with a remote. Different color settings and patterns.
Most e-scooters are sketchy past 50mph. But they added extra material to stabilize the handle bar. No wigglyness. Nothing felt unsafe. Really weird for China to make something that works. I bought a helmet thinking. Its going to go smooth for about an hour. Then its going to start getting loose. Nope. I had to ride it around all week to get the battery test finished. It made it every mile it stated it could on economy. I thought for sure they lied about the battery. Nope. Crazy that they made something right. We are in trouble econimically. If they bring electric cars here. They are trying to in mexico.

The Hawk 250 is an excellent bike. I put about 120 miles a day on mine. Bought last year and have almost 10000 miles on it. My only complaint is the chain tension is always needing adjustment.

    • @psalm2forliberty577
      @psalm2forliberty577 9 місяців тому +1

Bro, simply upgrade your low end (plain, non o-ring) stock chain to a high quality O-ring chain (match link size & link count to existing) and it won't need as much fiddling adjustment.
I ride a 2008 Suzuki V-Strom 650 daily, recently acquired (new, to me) it has the original DID brand O-ring chain at 17,000 miles.
These are internally lubricated, and only require light external lubing (per Fortnine review, plain gear oil) to stop rust, once a month or 1,000 miles.
V-Strom owners report chain life of 35,000 to 50,000 miles.
      And few readjustments required.
I'm sure your Hawk 250 China bike is well sorted, once you fix the minor compromises a budget bike must have inevitably.
Also, along with O-ring chain higher quality sprocket set BUT prob only if you note quickly wearing out or desire to change gearing for dirt or highway reasons.

    • @psalm2forliberty577
      @psalm2forliberty577 9 місяців тому +1

One reason I call your China "Hawk" 250 well sorted is because once upon a time, I enjoyed a 1980 Honda XL250 Enduro, and sure as Jesus Christ is King & LORD, your much newer Hawk 250 was cloned off my beloved & bulletproof Honda 250.
An enduring design never goes out of style !

Good advice Yammie. Buy an old Japanese bike, tons of after market parts and 10x the quality of the amazon bikes. Only Chinese bike that I have ridden that I like more then the Japanese bike it was copying was the KP Mini 150cc. I'm over 200lbs and struggle to hit 55mph on a Grom while the KP Mini 150 has almost the same dimensions and weight and it actually has a 150cc engine "unlike alot of so called 150's" which has about 2.5 more horsepower then the Grom. Still wouldn't recommend the KP though because of quality concerns.

    • @DFX2KX
      @DFX2KX 10 місяців тому

the issue with the old jap bikes is how many are often utterly *ruined* at these price points, least around here. And/or not having a title, that's also super common. Least you get an MSO/MCO document when you buy one and can get a title. If you're in a state that lets you bond titles with just a bill of sale, though...
And the Lifan bikes are pretty well put-together, but even those require a bit of research to know what you're getting into.

You couldn’t be more right! Get a used bike or a barn find. Most of these bikes need to work from not abuse but not enough use. Right now, I’m trying to buy a minibike with a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. I’m pretty sure if I work on the carbs or carb I can get it running again and have it rocksolid reliable. Just bought a salvaged ninja Z400 Under 5000 miles for three grand. I’m having a great time with it

if you want a chinese bike, i'd say go to CSC and order one. Not the greatest bikes, but they got support in the US and their customer service is really good. They come from the second most popular motorcycle brand in china, and their American importer stocks a ton of parts so you don't have to order anything from china. Pretty sure all the parts get shipped outta California

This video is very true. I'm a high-schooler and I was really looking into the hawk 250 bike. I'd worked on tons of motorcycles but never actually had one to call my own. I was going to buy the hawk, but I just looked around on Craigslist and found a nice 80s honda TLR200 that was running and riding with low mile for 1300 bucks. That's cheaper than the cheapest of the Chinese bikes.

That said, there's a strange appreciation and smile inspiring thing about surviving each trip to the supermarket. I had the same warning about being street legal, but keep off roadway..what they mean is if the speed limit is 45mph chances of getting rammed in the rear is pretty good. Stay on secondary and neighborhood streets and you'll rule the roads.

the positive that comes from Chinese bikes is that all the parts are dirt cheap and interchangeable. I have owned and loved many Hondas, Suzukis and Yamahas but man do I hate when I blow a top end or screw up a gear because it costs money and time. If I blow up my Chinese dirt bike I can just buy a brand new engine for $300 and have it swapped in under an hour. or buy a big bore kit for like $60. Everyone should definitely stick to the major known manufacturers when choosing their daily but as a secondary beater bike lifans aren't a bad choice.

So much crap being sold nowadays, not only bikes but almost everything! The hard part is some cheap products and small companies are actually producing some quality products and some big name brands are selling cheaply produced crap riding on the reputation of their name as they outsource manufacturing to maximise profits. Really you have to take time to do your research and then cross reference that with as many sources as possible before you can comfortably make a reliable purchase

I bought a new 175cc Chinese dual sport a few years ago that was basically a copy of the old early 80s Honda XL125/ XL185, it did need an Immediate oil change and I did need to torque every nut and bolt, and for good measure I changed as many of the nuts and bolts for quality stainless steel ones as I could. It was OK, it never let me down and was good enough fun. I have bought plenty of new Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki bikes before and after, bust despite being cheap and fun, it was worth nothing a year later when I went to sell it despite still looking and riding like new, so in the end the cost of ownership exceeded that of a Honda. In the end the best beginners bike is always a Honda.

Yammy show some mercy to the Chinese Bike guys Brother!
I think the main appeal here is that some are of the idea that brand new is always better than used, initial quality irrespective.
And you're right you said towards the end it's young inexperienced men who I think have lacked fathers in their lives -( this may may seem weird to say) but it's men who teach their sons to work on things, to maintain things and assess all things mechanical, including fundamentally, cars and motorcycles.
So these young men typically lack the skill set to analyze a used Japanese bike on Craigslist or marketplace and thus feel more confident buying a brand new China bike off Amazon, without really analyzing the economic wisdom or foolishness behind such a decision.
And while those of us riding high quality Japanese bikes (myself a Suzuki V-Strom 650) are tempted to snicker at or tease the China bike buyer, we'd probably do better to mentor them to learning about the world of motorcycles and vehicles in general.
When you think of it too, there may be a greater learning experience and less mayhem on the roadway, with young man learning to wrench on China bikes instead of having loan payments on superfast Japanese bikes that basically get them killed and threaten roadway safety, and teach them less about wrenching on bikes.

All those cheap Chinese grom clones are everywhere in CA. They’re even being marketed on Craigslist and sold out of semi sketchy warehouse retail locations in parts of town won’t want to stop unless you had a good reason. Like to buying one of those cheap groom clones or an even cheaper knock off scooters, dirk bike or small to medium atv. If they are plate-able and many are they just can’t go one the freeway which adds additional legal definition to the hwy. Hwy can be a freeway or not if you know what I mean. Freeways can have several lanes going in each direction, many times separated by barriers and have dedicated on and off freeway entrances and exits. 150cc is the legal min to be freeway legal in CA.

Try some of the Lifan bikes. I think they are better quality. I bought a Lifan LF200 GY 5. a 200cc dualsport from a local dealer back in 2007. Still riding it in 2023 with very few issues. Grom Clone is KP Mini 150. They have a 200cc known as the XPect 200 and a few others. Wish you would give one a try. Thankyou.

I Have a Lifan KP 200. Water cooled, efi, old Honda design counter balanced. Easy to do all maintenance, including valves, designed to be maintained by non mechanics.
Perfect for city, get 100+ miles per gallon. If you rap it out all the time. 90-80 mpg.
Installed an aftermarket full exhaust, changed handlebar, changed mirrors to bar ends.
Rev it out all day, bullet proof.
Highway, 72 mph is usually max. Draft behind cars, 75 mph. Uphills heavy winds, 55-65. Not a speed demon for highway.
Great handling, great brakes, suspension is ok also. Though no preload adjustment, not so good with an adult driver & passenger. Rider alone, suspension is fine.
Been riding 54 years. Many brands and sizes over the years. Great for quick run to stores. Need to run to Auto parts store, harbor freight, Lowe's. Perfect for city runs. Great handling for traffic.
Rear seat bag & tank bag for carrying stuff. Rather have this than a scooter.
I have a Ducati ST2 for longer distance riding. Faster than needed for town.
The cool thing about the Lifan KP 200 is that. To get best acceleration & speed. You work the throttle, gears & clutch properly to get the best out of it.
Faster bikes you simply cannot rev them out without losing your license or getting killed.
Fun raping it out getting cool sounds from the open exhaust!

I bought a Mangosteen M2 electric scooter on Amazon being sold by Eahora. It sorta looks like a Harley. It's been fairly pleasant to ride. I got stranded at one point because a fuse blew and I just ordered new front shocks because the one started leaking recently. I put just over 3,000 miles on it. Quality isn't on par with Japanese bikes but this things only goes about 40-45 MPH. It definitely lacks the polish of a Japanese bike but, it's been mostly reliable, people ask me about the bike all the time, and I've learned a few things maintaining my bike. I would recommend my scooter to anyone but, I do agree that a Japanese bike for not too much more would be a more solid machine. However, my e-scooter is just kinda a cool fun ride.

I bought the hawk 250 dlx, and it's the worst thing ever! Just terrible, I actually had to learn how to do stuff 😫 Kidding, I've got 1,400 miles on it, using it mostly as a commuter to and from work rn. I've taken it on some pretty rough trails, and it was a lot better than I was expecting. Still wouldn't recommend taking it off any big jumps. I've been saving a bundle on gas and having fun. You just have to be willing to learn how to tinker a bit. You basically have to ask yourself. Do I want a brand new bike with a few know issues or a used bike that's practically a mystery box of minor to major issues?

Bought my first Chinese bike in 2007, a Lifan 200cc enduro. Rode it for 10+ years and over 50,000 miles, it never let me down. Now I have Vitacci Clash 200 EFI scooter with the engine made by Lifan. Bought it from Amazon for $1375 +400 shipping. Only 3500 miles so far and no issues.
I'm 70 years old and have been riding motorcycles since I was a kid, all sizes from scooters to Goldwings. My advice is do not buy a Chinese bike unless you're willing and able to do all maintenance and repairs yourself. With a little mechanical know how Chinese bikes can be a great value. Nothing better if you like to tinker because parts are super cheap and easy to get.

The pricing isn't even appealing on these after you factor in shipping. A brand new CFMoto Papio is like 3K without any sort of discounts, and that last cruiser bike is literally more expensive than some of the 350 Royal Enfields. And of course thats to say nothing of the used market. I imagine buying one of these bikes just falls under the "stupid tax" category.

Just buy something used and reliable, Many people buy motorcycles and barely touch them and sell them for next to nothing just to regain garage space. 4K can net you a Kawasaki Vulcan with low mileage, and saw an all geared up 2006 BMW bike with 25K miles selling for 4K the other day.
