    The secret to Marduk and Immortal to some extent is that they are a death metal band

      Why is death metal always so much better with some blackening to spice it up? Would love a video on Akercocke at some point, for me they're one of the best of the blackened death formula

    Rad episode, looking forward to part 2.
    Oddly enough I got into Marduk only about a year ago, entirely because of Panzer Division Marduk, but I’ve found to really like most of their stuff.

    When we had that eclipse here in April I relistened to Dark Endless and realized that the song "The Sun Turns Black as Night" is really what I witnessed in the Eclipse, and later on Opus Nocturne "The Sun has failed" - this is the Eclipse era of Marduk! One of the first songs I covered with my first drummer, who was more into death metal at the time, I used to jam was "Dark Endless." He asked me to learn it, and I transcribed it with lyrics and all. I recently rebought the Dark Endless album thinking it would have the lyrics in it, but it didn't. Some of them are found on that live album "Infernal Eternal" though. And it was fun to hear them play some of the Dark Endless songs live still on that tour I mentioned in the other comment.
    From this era I personally especially love the Opus Nocturne album, from the album cover, to the songs. That song itself "Opus Nocturne" is very emotional and melodic, and has a very unique openness for a band like Marduk.
    Their demo got a lot of cult following due to the cover and the title obviously to bring them some attention in the beginning and I personally like those songs the way they were recorded better than on Dark Endless.
    Anyway, thanks for covering this, RFI! Great stuff.

    I didn't get too into the Dark Endless prolly cuz I didn't "get" death metal. I should probably fix that. I turned around to Darkthrone's earliest material when getting into more death and doom metal now than a few years ago.
    I am too on the "Opus Nocturn is their Opus" train.

    It would me amiss if one didn't mention that the rightly awesome intro-riff in "Wolves" is in fact composed by none other than Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection. It was sort of a throw-away lick he was noodling on during some sort of jam session, or whilst on tour. Can't recall which.
    However, I'm not mistaken, he never gave his explicit approval to use the riff. Nonetheless, there ya go: many peoples favourite riff from Marduk is in actuality something Jon's gigabrain concocted on the fly.

      @radiofreeinnsmouth1337  5 місяців тому +1

      @@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 Likewise, they are stellar works of Swedish contrapuntal melodicism (that comes together as a whole). Although, don't you mean the ONLY two Dissection albums... 😉

    Hell yes. Those of the Unlight and Opus Nocturne are where it's at for me. Dark Endless is decent for what it is. I like their later so-called "Norsecore" stuff too, but I'm way past my teenage years so I rarely get in the mood for that era.

    Like you say, Marduk are really good at slow parts and the early albums are great. Too bad they've gone for the easy listening route, even though Christraping Black Metal is one of the all time great song titles.

    I have to ask something a bit unrelated but still nerdy enough: isn't Radio Free Innsmouth a combo between Radio Free Albemuth (PKD) and Lovecraft's Innsmouth? cause I hope it is. that'd be nerdy as heck

    • @radiofreeinnsmouth1337
      @radiofreeinnsmouth1337  6 місяців тому +1

      Unfortunately it's just a combo of the Lovecraft Innsmouth and the old Radio Free Europe CIA project from the '50s. I came up with the name a long time ago, way before I knew that much about Philip K Dick apart from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

      I wasn't thinking of them at the time, but they definitely qualify, especially once they kicked out Set Teitan. I still like their first two albums though from way back when they were part of that early orthodox black metal thing going on in Sweden though. I actually like a decent amount of the early stuff from that movement like the first Ofermod 7", the first 7" and 10" records from Malign, the early Funeral Mist stuff up through and including the Salvation album, the first Nefandus album, the sole album from Triumphator, and the first two Nåstrond albums, but they all kinda lose me once they get farther into the 2000s.

    Without legion i wouldnt be a marduk fan. Those of the unlight probably your favorite Album from marduk? Yeah, wolves is a wonderful song but how much better is it on live in germania with legion. And nightwing is one of the best Albums of music history. Even Johann Sebastian Bach would listen to it 😅
