Multicam Systems B4 to M43 Optical Adapter

- I take a look at Multicam.systems adaptation of BlackMagic Design's B4 adapter for URSA- which Multicam Systems has adapted for use on M43 cameras. It enlarges the circle of light co cover a wider area which can be of use on some "windowed" sensor Micro 4/3 cameras.
I test it on the full M43 sensor using two GH4 camcorders in HD mode (not cropped 4K mode) and while you can see the increase in size, and the good optical quality it delivers, the GH4 is not the camera it is designed to serve- so it still doesn't cover the whole sensor. But using the larger sensor area enables me to show the difference between a 2.3" lens, with and without the optical adapter. - Розваги

Some vignetting is actually good!!
One of the latest blackmagic updates uses gyro info to combat the rolling shutter and that crops in the screen some what in post, so a part of the vignetting will disappear just there plus my bmpcc 4k does not have stabilisation so for sport related material i stabilise in post too which would crop it in a bit more soo the whole vignetting probably would be gone by that point! to bad these adapters are so pricy..

Hey - did you look at the Zhongyi B4 to MFT mount at all? It claims to magnify up 2x and directly states that it's compatible with the GH line of cameras. There aren't any reviews out there so I'm fishing for experience with it :)
I have not, but if they want it reviewed, I'm willign to give it a look.
Would you recommend the MTF Services Ltd B4 adapter? I have a Canon R5, and an opportunity to purchase a used Canon KJ20x8.2B IRSD. I love ENG lenses and I hate using clumsy photographic lenses for video work, BUT I am concerned that I might lose the sharpness and/or quality through an adapter. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
It is the one I have heard good feedback about, as well as the newer one from Multicam Systems.
so kind of useless if it doesn't cover the whole sensor. i mean you're testing this with gh4 8 year old cams. most people are trying to get full coverage for 4k 60 on the gh5 or 4k 120 on the gh6. Will they ever come out with a doubler specific to the micro 4/3? fingers crossed.

Absolutely not. As I noted in the video- many of the Blackmagic Design cameras use "windowed" sensors- meaning they do not use the whole sensor to deliver an image. The Studio cameras specifically, as well as the URSA cameras, so you don't need full M43 coverage. You need "enough" coverage, which is why BMD made this optical adapter for their cameras. They wouldn't bother to make an an adapter if it were useless.
Moreover, you can utilize the long-standing feature ETC or Pixel-to-Pxel on Panasonic cameras to crop in on the sensor and still deliver stated resolution of your video. it's just not oversampled any more (4K and DCI on the GH4 was _only_ pixel-to-pixel, but available oversampled on the GH5 and GH6) and utilize different lenses while still delivering 4K at whatever frame rate.
I deliberately did NOT use that mode in this video so I would be able to show viewers the increase in sensor coverage.
If I was using ETC mode in HD, then the increase in coverage of the sensor would have been outside the frame and not visible, defeating the purpose of making the video.

Do they make a ENG style lens that's M43 native?
Will a a wide angle lens also work with mft lenses with a doubler ? A wide b4 lens so lets say a 4.8-48mm tv b4 zooms
Yes, wide 2/3" lenses work just the same.

A test with the new BMD Studio 4k cameras would be welcomed. But then you need to power the lens from a powerbank... Convenience is an issue again...
Agreed. In my review of the BMD Studio cameras, I really pointed out that a "studio" camera ought to be made for "studio" lenses - and BMD already has a B4 mount for the URSA, so why the studio camera doesn't have a B4 mount and Lens port makes no sense.

Do you know any adapter that has high quality glass that is superior to 2x build in doubler? I need to stop to as you said at least f4, f5.6 is better for edge to edge sharpness. But after doubler that is f8 or f11 exposure. Very dark lens. Only gripe with B4 lens. So maybe there is adapter with better quality glass?
The Multicam systems uses the glass from the Blackmagic design converter so it is broadcast glass.
Also, the better the lens you start with, the better your result, so starting with a lens made to higher tolerances - "HD" lenses often deliver better results than SD lenses.
There are also now lenses certified for 4K.
So it's not all about the doubler.
Gh6/G9II has piexl to piexl mode that turn m4/3 sensor to super 16 sensor size. Then I am sure this adapter will cover whole frame.
Yes, Panasonic had that back at least to the GH2 days. Called it ETC mode. Maybe even from the first ones.
You're categorically wrong about photo lenses not habing constant aputure options. There are TONS of photo zoom lenses with constant apertures.
Cool video though. Not many people are talking about broadcast lens options on m4/3.
First: I'd love for you to show me a constant aperture 10x or 18x still lens. This is primarily the zoom lens that will be used. We're not talking about using 2x or 3x "zoom" lenses.
Second: All lenses transmit less light as the focal length increases.
"Constant aperture" lenses are either very short zooms, or they change the aperture internally to compensate for changes in light transmission through the lens so they "deliver" the same amount of light to the sensor.
Photo lenses are designed to get to this setting _at_ each focal length. If you try to zoom through the entire zoom range of a 10x optical still lens, you will see the iris "jump" to the next setting, several times through the zoom range.
It does not maintain a constant image throughout the zoom range.
Lenses designed for video are smoothly adjust the iris along the entire zoom range so the light output is absolutely constant and you see no change even through an 18 or even 21x focal length change would and does actually have much light transmission at the long range of the lens.
I demonstrate this "aperture jerk" with still lenses, versus a true "constant aperture" B4 lens in another video:

What do you mean there aren’t constant aperture photo zoom lenses? There are tons of photo zoom lenses that carry a constant aperture through the zoom range. Cheap kit lenses do not…but that’s about it.
If you try to slowly zoom a "constant aperture" zoom lens, it will abruptly adjust the internal compensation for the lens losing light as it zooms. When you take photos, this is not an issue, as you only need it to be correct at one focal length. But when trying to do a smooth zoom through all the focal lengths while filming, a constant aperture still lens is anything but. This is why both Canon and Fujinon have now released "cinema" lenses that make this internal compensation smooth.
@@IEBATechThoughts yeah that’s fair, I guess they do lose some light while zooming in on a “constant aperture”. I guess I more so thought you were saying there were no constant aperture photo zoom lenses at all…but I get what you’re saying for sure🤘
@@Phillip.Creates Yes, all lenses lose light- but those made for video, when you zoom, the iris compensation is constant and invisible. Still lenses aren't designed for that because, for photos, it's never needed. But the snap adjustment becomes visible if you zoom the lens while filming. Unless they're designed for video, the still lenses are designed to compensate in "steps" which, honestly, means at one end of that "step" it's a little dark, and the other end of that step, before the lens adjusts the iris, it can be a little too light. But I'm not a stills photographer so I've never delved into it.
