    I am Chinese, but have naturally darker skin. I put on coconut oil for sunscreen once in a tropical island, my skin got burnt a lot, i had peeling. Whereas my fairer sisters who didn't put anything, or had applied normal sunscreen products both didn't get burnt like me. So i wouldn't recommend putting oils to go out in the sun. However, maybe the quality of the coconut oil i used was inferior. But i won't try it again.

    so glad you like the videos!! I usually use the oil cleansing method for my face (castor oil and coconut oil massaged into face and removed with hot washcloth) and dr bronners soap for my body most the time. I don't wear nail polish :) hugs back!

    There are many comments about oils frying in heat. Not all oils are created equal in this regard.
    The reason why some people tan but not burn is the low SPF of most natural oils - which filters out most, but not all of the sun's rays. Those with very fair skin will still burn through low SPF.
    Coconut oil has an average SPF of 4, as do jojoba oil, sesame oil and shea butter.
    Almond oil and olive oil average SPF5.
    Hemp seed oil and macadamia oil average SPF6.
    Soybean oil and avocado oil average SPF10.
    Wheat germ oil averages SPF20.
    Carrot seed oil is around SPF38-40.
    Red raspberry seed oil ranges from SPF28-50, depending on its quality.
    Oils vary in their ability to be sun protective based on their quality, and of course on your tendency to burn. Someone with pale olive skin will take longer to burn than someone with pale Caucasian skin. For the latter, a low SPF oil is unlikely to provide enough protection. Hope this helps!! 😘💖🙏🏻

    I disagree with this video. I'm all for going natural. Yet I think its okay for the sunscreen to block everything, even the vitamin D because there's probably going to be a small percentage of vitamin D being absorbed anyway. This oil advice, no people don't do it. Oil will cause your skin to burn due to the chemical make up of the medium. Sunblock is good. I'm trying to prevent skin cancer rate to increase or stay constant.

    • @wiftlake
      @wiftlake 10 років тому +13

      Thank you for saying this!! I'm a fan of natural products as well, but how can anti-oxidants protect you from burning? UV-rays can directly damage DNA in cells, so anti-oxidants won't help here. Also, please remember UVA and UVB act differently and just wearing a hat won't prevent the UVA rays from reaching your skin... So people, please wear good sunscreens when you're outside: physical or chemical, whichever you prefer.

    • @eleonoraragona1592
      @eleonoraragona1592 10 років тому +7

      yes in fact oils usually have a spf around 5 or 6, and it can vary from oil to oil so you cannot know it for sure, so it is not safe at all to sit in the sun with oil on your skin!!! it does not protect you and sun can damage the oil itself so you will literally fry under the sun! coconut oil can used to protect the hair from sun damaging, but certainly not your skin

    • @Rhea390
      @Rhea390 6 років тому

      I agree with most of what you've said. But no, oil doesn't cause your skin to burn. I use quite a bit of coconut oil all over my body and I live in a tropical region where the sun practically bakes you here. There's absolutely no difference in my ability to get a tan or burn in the sun with and without coconut or any other oil.

    Ok, so how does coconut oil both protect you from the sun and leave you with a tan? Does tanning not mean that the UV rays are damaging your skin? Or did I hear wrong?

    • @Nina-cd6uw
      @Nina-cd6uw 3 роки тому +1

      @allie nell The tanning rays still do the kind of UV damage that causes cancer and premature aging - you just don't get burnt from them.
      BUT Coconut Oil is no sunscreen, that is misinformation.
      A natural SPF of about 4 when layered thickly is about no sunscreen and quite forgettable.

    Coconut oil is probably what i would use, if i wanted to get ROASTED in the sun. That is a terrible advice.

    • @ayeletle9761
      @ayeletle9761 8 років тому +19

      I've read otherwise:, it's spf is way too low to actually protect you from uv rays, and it's not a safe way to protect yourself from the sun, this being especially true for infants whose skin is very delicate.

    • @ayeletle9761
      @ayeletle9761 8 років тому +11

      +Fabihanski coconut oil doesn't protect you from uv rays. What this means is, that just because you don't burn, doesn't mean there is no damage to the skin cells, pale or not.

    • @ayeletle9761
      @ayeletle9761 8 років тому +9

      +Fabihanski or, we could say that I've informed people watching this about what I know, and they can choose to ignore it, take it as it is, or read more about the usage of coconut oil on skin, and let their common sense guide them. Peace :-)

    I seek shade to walk in when I'm outside...Trees Tall Buildings, Gas Station overhangs, Telephone poles and wires. I am in the sun a lot due to my active lifestyle, so I get a lot of sun exposure already, therefore, I am cautious of getting too much sun, and I run toward shady spots to continue walking under even if it's out of the direction but still headed toward where I'm going. It's a fun game I play. It increases my awareness of my surroundings. I also look for shady places to park my car. Under trees, or next to big tall vehicles. You're so beautiful inside and out! I wish there was a "Love It" button or a "Favorite Video" button on UA-cam. Watching the natural deoderant video and this sun protection video makes me think of this. : - ) : - ) I give you lots of thanks for sharing your knowledge holistichabits.

    I come from a culture where getting a tan is seen as natural, and healthy. Although, I must say using coconut oil and letting yourself sizzle is not the way to go about it. And your body is extremely efficient at absorbing vitamins from the sun and even a 10 minute walk on a sunny day will get you a good amount of nutrients.

    Theres another supplement called astaxanthin that works as a natural sunscreen Its derived from a red algae, I believe & is supposed to be what turns flamingos pink! (shrimp eat a lot of the pigmented algae & the flamingos eat the shrimp).
    Anyways, I tried it a couple summers ago & it actually worked to prevent me from burning (I'm normally quite fair, so I burn easy).
    Just wanted to mention that. Keep the awesome videos coming! :)

    Your video is really great, i've learned a lot with your eating suggestions to increase the sun protection, nevertheless I don't agree with you when you say that coconut oil is a good oil for protection. It doesn't have any sunscreen, i won't recommend it at all. I would whether suggest a sunscreen SPF30 or 50. I'm black with light skin though and I use SPF50 because I can't bare the sunrays, I feel like burning. I never ever use coconut oil as a sunscreen.

      I totally agree, coconut oil has a spf of 5 and can be used to protect your hair from most of sun damage (even though you should anyway wear a hat or braid your hair) ,but certainly not your skin..even if used by already tanned people it is just not safe to wear any oil under the sun

    Thank you, this was so helpful to me, i am very pale and burn easy, I dont like adding unnecessary chemicals to my skin, so your tips are really helpful, who knows, maybe i can build up my tolerance to the sun and get myself a beautiful tan like yours!

    Better for lycopene is cherry tomatoe, because tomatoe has lycopene under skin.
