We all saw the clip. Cyndi was the first person to say it was her jewellery that was interfering with the sound and they all told her no, they made her redo her part over and over before saying yes it was her jewellery. So how was SHE a pain to work with?

Yeah, people that pile on Cyndi need to re-visit the clips of that sequence of the song. The only artists that routinely nail their part every take (for that section of the song) are Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Michael Jackson.

I saw the clip of Cyndi recording the song with other artists. Everyone in the studio think she is a pain and also a joke, but guess what, her voice overpowered everyone else, that's my first impression when I heard the song first time back in 80's. I am really honest because I am not a fan of hers but I have to say she absolutely killed it, her voice is all I can remember from this song.

I wasn’t “a fan of the girl,” either, but 2 months ago, I clicked on a report with Cyndi and started watching her clips. Since then, I have discovered another masterpiece every day. Everything sung was a miracle. She was a huge singer, with a fantastic individuality, and as she got older she became a more and more beautiful woman. She became a beautiful WOMAN at the age of 40-50!

Quincy Jones is a liar. A lot of the artists complained about the song. I remember Billy Joel saying something. Here it is: "Most of us who were there didn't like the song, but nobody would say so. I think Cyndi Lauper leaned over to me and said, 'It sounds like a Pepsi commercial.' And I didn't disagree."

yeah cindy brought that song to the tippy top, I mean it was the summit of the song, the song was slowly building up to something great and I mean MJ was there guiding the listener on the journey so without her solo it just wouldn't have had that huge climax you were anticipating, really well done song, incredible, and we probably won't ever see something like that again

John Denver had done more to save the world than any other artist at that point in history, but he wasn't invited to participate. He was invited to sing at Farm Aid, so hopefully that made him feel better, but that was a festival, not a song. He was sad about being left out of We Are the World.

Also for anyone hating on We are the world, it is still a no #1 song and it made a lot of money for famine relief in Africa. People sing it not only at peace rallies but online everywhere including Michaels "Heal the world". Everyone has opinions but the song is still a major hit and there's been 2 generations of singers/performers whom have bounded together and sang it for charity. It was a song to raise awareness and funds to feed and clothe people. BTW WE ARE THE WORLD, don't let politicians tell you otherwise. John Lennon also said come together and imagine this to be true. Just my opinion. 🙏🌎👑🌌💞🌻✌✊

Apollo Zero yes it very much does mean it was a good song, just becuase some of the people who recorded the song didn’t like it doesn’t mean it was a bad song, not everyone who recorded the song we’re all apart of the same genre, all have different ways of singing, all have their own taste and style and it’s usually not easy for a bunch of random people to get together and sing a song, and the fact they sang it like that is amazing, (although I did see some record footage of it and some of it was just horrible vocals, becuase they’re not use to that kind of song)

While reading the comments, i recalled the video where Huey, Cyndy and Kim were singing or doing their part of the song, and other singers telling Cyndi that she was doing it great. If you listen carefully on this video herein, she´s saying she didn´t wanted to do it (Sound) better than Kim or to sing so high that her voice (Kim´s) sounded way too low. On the recording video if you noticed, they were like trying to take the song to the right level of interaction of the three, like having a conversation, that´s why they told Cyndi: look, on the last part you have to get in the middle, and that´s when she did the "'Yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAH!'" part, to me, one of the best part of the song among many others

I was 19 years old when that Music Video came out on MTv and it was broadcasted in other tv channels. It was a big event. It was successful because everybody watched it. I loved the song. All the singers who were popular at that time had a singing part in it. I loved Kenny Rogers. I had a man crush on that guy. But Cyndi’s part was my favorite. Everytime I heard her voice on that song I would get a lump in my throat. I would get emotional. Her voice had that aching sound. She did a great job.

Some people make fun of her performance in "We are the world" and i think that is unfortunate, while she isn't exactly a technical singer who possess a strong pipe if you will, i think as an artist and performer she is more legit than most pop singers we have today, if we look at a perspective that Cyndi as a caucasian singer who has limitation compared to the most singers at that time (esp black singers with superior voice, pipe, technique etc) could join the ranks of that many superstars and legends, she's gotta have something unique to offer, the same can also be said for Bob Dylan or Huey Lewis

She explains it well years later in hindsight of the song’s complete success but let’s remember what she did DURING the moment. She initially told Quincy she wasn’t coming after the AMA’s because here boyfriend thought the song wasn’t very good. He had to convince her to still come. Then during the chorus recording she complained to those around her it sounded like a Pepsi commercial. Now you also need to remember she refused to sing girls just want to have fun when her manager brought her the song. Only after some convincing did she record it. So the moral of the story is that Cindi became successful not because of HER musical choices but the insistence of those around her. She had great talent, thank God she had those around her to guide her.

They had to get no-less than Celine Dion for her part in the "We are the world for Haiti" version. Quincy Jones needed to get that out of Cyndi, but it was bordering on disrespectful though. Everybody was annoyed but recording takes time, you can't rush a good thing. Kudos Cyndy Lauper! You're my icon.
