    What I like about Joey is that he's actually showing how hard it is to fix things.

    After over 20 years away from electronics repairs (tv/videos) these old apple laptops have been my entry back. So having never used a thermal cam, hot air station/flux until I saw your videos I actually used the thermal fault finding process I learnt off your channel to find a chip at around 50 celcius, and a s/c cap by it. Swapped the cap out under my new microscope without acually flicking the component off never to be seen again and seconds later the chip was around 30c and the logic board was repaired. Chuffed to bits to say the least.

    You likely dont have a short just low resistance line to the cpu. However that chip is the real time clock, rtc. That is important to operation and is very common area for corrosion. I would say get a replacement chip.

    Probably unrelated, but at 4:21 there's a small cap at the left of the screen that seems a bit burnt?

      And the chip directly under it looks like it might be missing two pads at the top. D688 appears to be lcd driver chip?

    Hi. I know I'm a bit late to this but long time Mac user so I just wanted to mention that if a Mac battery is completely flat, plugging in the charger won't immediately get the thing powered up. It can take a good 5-10 minutes on charge before the machine will boot.

    Hey joey. In the video around 4:08 if you pause and look to the left you can see two components around a burn spot

    For this board - is over. But please never connect power to the board without any IC. If this chip somehow drives any PWM on the mosfet and you remove it - that means that without control the main power rail (~20V) will go to the load (CPU, hub and many other really expensive chips)

    @mball1993 10 місяців тому +1

    Hey Joey! Just a quick one, if you head to 4:00 into the video, it looks like there is a burnt out cap just above the D68B chip. Could be wrong, but may be of some help!

    You should get an old broken Xbox 360 phat to fix mod it and sell it, preferably a jasper 12.1A they where made from 2008-2010 and are the most reliable as they fixed the gpu. However if you’re looking for one that you wanna fix, look for ones with stuck dvd trays, or “open tray” errors or ones with rrod (Red Ring Of Death) if you buy a rrod console buy a jasper rrod as it’s less likely to be something major like the gpu, just make sure you try and find one that hasn’t been tampered with, the warranty sticker is under behind the faceplate. Rgh 3 is easy to do and only requires 2 wires, a diode and 22k resistor. I believe you can also use a raspberry pi pico to read and write to the nand. Would definitely make for an interesting video, also I do apologize for the very long comment.

    I think this was a very worthy change! MacBook repair will be hard in the beginning of course as you build up some supplies and understanding of the various rails, but I think you'll get a lot out of it -- especially since you said it's something you'd like to know more about.

    I build and repair custom gaming PCs for a living and do some console refurbishing on the side. I'd steer clear of Apple stuff. They can be a pain in the ass.

    I picked up a MacBook Air a while ago and have been left in the exact same position. I can get a charging light, but I do not get any power. along with the MacBook I did get there charger and it was aftermarket. I wonder if the non-apple charger is the reason why I can charge the battery but I can’t turn the MacBook on.
    I honestly think that the model you got is the exact same one I have. This could be a common issue with this particular MacBook. Hopefully you revisit after some research. We might have the exact same issue.

    It’s always good to see something different. The process of fault finding is the same, but it’s a lot harder to find a good starting point.
    The microscope and thermal camera approach appears to be excellent tools.

    never try a laptop board without chip that you dont know what is doing! if it is for some power rail you may send 19 vold in every chip on this rail without the chip! i learn this the hard way by destroying a laptop motherboard! if it is for example the audio chip no problem the lan no problem but if its for some power lane its game over! sorry for my english! lets hope you start getting better luck with the next repair!
