What?! if any of the rock/Austin matches should’ve been on this list, it should’ve been the final one at wrestlemania 19 and even that one was pretty good. Wrestlemania 17 was easily the best match of the three matches even with that sucky ending!
Right? People are really looking in hindsight because Austin's Heel turn didn't pan out, but Austin when he was in the Two Man Power Trip with HHH was a good heel and he was over as a heel especially when he beat the hell out of the Jim Ross, the Hardy Boyz, and Lita. He was already getting over as a heel the next night on Raw when he formed the Two Man Power Trip with HHH in the cage match. It's because HHH got injured that Austin's heel turn ended up bombing and as a result he became more of a comedy act. They tried to salvage it with him becoming the leader of the alliance, but it was too late.
I actually thought his Heel turn was fun. Didn’t think Wrestlemania was the right time for it (Stone Cold has said this himself). Having watched that match live (and many times throughout the year) No one knew how to react to that finish. I mean Vince just stood there for about 3 mins in the ring. It’s just not the ending the one of the biggest match of all time should’ve had.
@Bahgawd Stone Cold thought that his character was getting stale and wanted to freshen it up before the crowd started turning on him. It was a bold move, and I can understand his reasoning for wanting to turn heel at the time. Shame that his character couldn't stay vicious and unhinged like it was during the Two Man Power Trip.
They did Shinsuke dirty, him and a lot of the guys brought up from NXT around that time got me interested in wrestling again and it sucks seeing him turned into an enhancement talent jobber. I'd probably include Jey vs. Jimmy at 40. Super high expectations that people thought might be the match of the night and they ended up doing like 46 superkicks then just ended it with a spear and a splash.
Yeah, couldn’t agree more. The Jimmy/Jey piece has been mentioned by other people, I guess I just didn’t have high expectations of the match to begin with.
I see why you can call the WrestleMania 17 match disappointing in hindsight, given the end of Austin's amazing run, and the way he basically undid the badass persona he built up for years... But you also gotta know, as a pure performance, a LOT of people are gonna defend it, because it really was a fantastic match as far as the actual wrestling and intensity. Stone Cold and Rock don't do BAD matches, but I understand completely why the ending moment would be very hard to stomach.
Thanks for the comment! Definitely not a bad match and Stone Cold and Rock are Top 5 wrestlers for me, so it was hard to put on this list but that ended just…hurt!
Honorable mentions: 1. Triple H vs Randy Orton for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 25. The match was just dull and the added stipulation that Hunter can lose the title by disqualification didn't help either. 2. Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso at Wrestlemania 40 Night 1. It wasn't that bad of a match but it could've been better. Maybe if they had the likes of Solo Sikoa or even their father Rikishi involved, it would have been better. But I heard that the match have been cut short due to time restraints.
6:40 False. HHH had already proven himself main event worthy after his legendary feud with Cactus Jack earlier in the year, and lord knows that the Rock was absolutely HUGE in 2000. The reason why Big Show and Mick Foley were added to the main event of WM 2000 was because Big Show had it written into his contract after he jumped ship from WCW in 1999 that he gets to main a WM, Undertaker was supposed to be his opponent for the event but he was injured and had no opponent (Big Show probably would have started the feud with the Undertaker after he was tired of being mistreated by him when they were the Unholy Alliance), and Mick Foley was added in because Vince felt bad that Foley never got a chance to main event a WM after he had retired a month prior at No Way Out.
Okay. I’m pretty sure none of that is true. Tons of wrestling podcasts out there to confirm that Vince never put Titles, Matches, PPV appearance in contracts. Bruce Pritchard talked about how they felt that Rock vs Triple H didn’t have enough star power for a Wrestlemania at that time (which is why the other two were added)
Good argument for it. I didn’t have super high expectations for it, which is why it wasn’t higher. I also think the crowd’s reaction made it pretty memorable and saved it in some ways.
I think the multiple-chair shot ending was an inspired choice as it showed how desperate and violent Austin was willing to get to be a champion again. If Rock wouldn't stay down, Austin would beat him within an inch of his life. It also protected the stunner as Rock wouldn't have to kick out of it again. These days it's just multiple finisher spamming where wrestlers just kick out.
I hear what you saying and agree with you. I just think in a match like this, it needed a clean finish. Hogan vs Andre Warrior vs Hogan Rock vs Austin Cena vs Rock These matches need to end in a reasonable/simple way.
So, my thoughts on Wrestlemania 17... If I was booking a clean finish with no heel turns, I'd have had Rock go for Rock Bottom midway through the match, but kayfabe tear a hamstring in the process. The Rock soldiers on, but eventually Austin beats him with the Stunner. Rock goes to Hollywood, Austin's the champ. BUT who was Austin going to feud with after that? Triple H? He and Austin had just feuded for months. Perhaps Kurt Angle, but how long can you push that?
I actually don’t mind the heel turn. I would’ve waited till Raw after mania. Rock vs Austin is (especially at WM17) is just one of those handful of matches in history that needed a clean finish
Goldberg vs Lesnar at WM20 was not the main event. Main event was HHH vs HBK vs Benoit aka the best triple threat match of all time. I would put this list the horrible McIntyre vs Lesnar at WM36 (3 german suplex, 3 F5´s, 4 Claymore kicks, the end).
WM16. 2000 was the worst mania ever no 1 on 1 matches every match was either a triple threat fatal 4 way tag team matches 6 person tags a hardcore battle royal no Stone Cold or Undertaker didn't help matters
Yeah, especially because everyone kind of knew this was going to be it for The Undertaker, but at least the bad match gave us a cool Undertaker Documentary!
@@Bahgawd it did. The only one I will take issue with is your number one.Rock/Austin from wrestlemania 17 was a great match though I will agree the ending sucked! Personally, the three-way women’s match from wrestlemania 35 would’ve been my number one or the first Brock/Goldberg match! The women’s match should’ve been Becky Lynch versus Ronda Rousey all along. Charlotte did not need to be in it. Still, it should’ve been better than what it was. I think a lot of the reason was wrestlemania was so long. I think everybody was drained. Once Kofi Kingston versus Daniel Bryan happened earlier in the card for the WWE championship, that was the loudest that crowd was the whole night! And in all honesty that should’ve been the main event! After that, the crowd was pretty much dead! As for Brock/Goldberg at wrestlemania 20, that match will always be on everyone’s worst wrestlemania match list! While the rematch years later will never be a five star classic, it was much better than this crap was! I still enjoyed your video nonetheless! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
I’m not sure if he would’ve had a long run with it, if that was true. Just not sure where you go (storyline wise) if he is the champ. I think there was a better chance of him getting it at SummerSlam 88, but Warrior got so hot that they changed plans
I liked the austin heel turn, the problem was the bad timing. Rock leaving, Triple H was a Heel and already beat austin at NWO ‘01 but the final nail was turning heel again for the alliance. BAH GAWD
a dream match is still possible between hulk hogan vs. ric flair hogan just signed a 5 year deal with wwe and flair is still wrestling over in AEW at the age of 74?
Eddie vs Rey? Really. Ok so it was a 7/10 where anything short of a 9/10 would seem at least a little disappointing but it doesn’t belong anywhere near the top 10 disappointing mania matches of all time.
This one is tough. It was a really good match. The expectations were probably too high, but if you haven’t recently - rewatch that match and the first thing that will stick out is all the times Rey fixed his mask.
The build-up to this match is still one of the best ever. Two biggest stars ever. The ending is so anti-climatic. Tell me what other great match ended with chair shots to the thigh?
Having Rock vs. Austin at WM 17 as the most disappointing match in WM History is compete crazy talk, even with the ending justification.
What?! if any of the rock/Austin matches should’ve been on this list, it should’ve been the final one at wrestlemania 19 and even that one was pretty good. Wrestlemania 17 was easily the best match of the three matches even with that sucky ending!
