Never owned one..I was kinda of a Nintendo guy...but man do I have Mega Drive memories from my friends..and I admit I wanted one, especially when we played Streets of Rage 2, Story of Thor, Sonic 2 and so many other games!
Johnny! Strider is definitely on my top 10 list. I just got ghouls & ghosts last year and i got spoiled play the SNES version first. I found it really difficult but definitely a great game to have.
i'm still not buying into ghouls n ghosts no matter how many youtubers gush over it. i played it back then and didn't want to get past stage 2, and i've tried it again here and there but never bothered to get invested in it. can't believe its on top of phantasy star 4 in your list
Omg, Strider was...epic when it came out. I got my Sega Genesis in 1989 for Christmas. This was the machine that turned me into a hardcore gamer. I had an Nes and Master System in 1985 and 1986 respectively. I really agonized over getting a Genesis or Turbo Grafx 16 that year. A friend of mine got his Genesis a few weeks before Christmas. His first two games were Altered Beast(pack in) and Ghouls n' Ghosts. I loved Altered Beast but Ghouls n' Ghosts pushed me over the edge. I wound up getting Strider on my Genesis in 1990. I was looking for a good 16-bit game and the internet did not exist. I had birthday money burning a hole in my pocket and I saw Strider for the Genesis. Now, I played Strider on the Nes (owned and loved it) and the arcade. Even though I loved Strider on the Nes, I wanted a version that was close to the arcade...but that was impossible. I admit, I was leery about the claims on the box...I have been burned before. I popped my brand bew game into the cartridge slot...I was literally floored by how good it looked and played. First Altered Beast, then Ghouls n' Ghosts, Golden Axe, and finally Strider...we had in my mind arrived. We finally had a machine that could churn arcade quality graphics with little compromises. Not long after SNK did drop a machine that brought the arcade home 1 to 1 but that is a story for another time. For me, I made the right decision getting the Genesis in '89. I made the right decision getting the Snes in '91. Hell, the very first machine I was unhappy with was the 3DO...man that was an expensive (for its time) lesson.
Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 2 and Golden Axe 1 & 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 2 are a few of my favorites on the Sega Genesis. I prefer the SNES version of Ghouls and Goblins. Great top 10 video John!
YS III... It's gotta be YsIII I said before the reveal of every single one of the reveals. And I'm genuinely surprised by some of your choices. But it's a great list. And I'm now gonna go power up ghosts and goblins ultimate on the psp and kick back for the rest of the day.
Last gen I had a 360. The I bought a PS3 to play Ps1 and Ps2 games. But I also wante try some new games on that machine (some exclusives I already have on the PS4)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my favorite game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, bar none. That's not to say that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts isn't amazing, but I feel that regular, non-super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the best. I have it on the Genesis, SuperGrafx, Master System, Saturn, and the arcade PCB. I've played the X68000 version. I always make sure to complete the game. SuperGrafx version offered me the most challenge because it only offers a couple of continues.
If you don't understand that the run button makes the whole game, then you are a TMNT amateur and have no business commenting on the game in the first place.
If Zombies Ate My Neighbors is on the Genesis Mini, I'm 100% getting it. I'm already about 90% sure I'm gonna get one, but ZAMN will push it over the top.
Zombies ate my Neighbors is a great game ............... on the Super Nintendo. Because of the weak sound on the Mega Drive / Genesis you better play the SNES version.
I'm digging the Sword of Vermilion mention! Great RPG game that doesn't get enough credit and really showcases the solid audio capabilities of the Genesis :)
My first experience with the Phantasy Star series was Phantasy Star online on the Sega Dreamcast and to this say it’s one of my absolute favorite games ever! Too bad i never got into Phantasy Star earlyer
Mine, too. My first time I played, the "big moment" with Alys hit me like nothing I'd experienced in a video game (or movie) before. I honestly didn't see that coming.
Shining Force is one of my absolute favorite video games! I always hope they will return to strategy RPG, maybe with a Shining Force 4. That would be amazing!
Props for Sword of Vermilion. Great list Johnny, so many memories. Here is my list. 1. Phantasy Star IV 2. Streets of Rage 3 3. Shinning Force 2 4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 5. Golden Axe 2 6. Castlevania Bloodlines 7. Sword of Vermilion 8. King's Bounty 9. Altered Beast 10. TMNT Hyperstoe Heist

I haven't quite played enough Mega Drive games yet to confidently make a list of my favorites, but I have really enjoyed Phantasy Star IV, Shinobi III, Beyond Oasis, Shining Force, Streets of Rage 1&2, Ristar and Sonic 2. Phantasy Star IV still stands as one of my favorite RPGs.
Try Landstalker and Crusade of Centy if you liked Beyond Oasis, Warsong (Langrisser) 1 and Langrisser 2 (there are english patched ROMs for this one) if you like Shining Force, also Shining Force 2 is better in every way than the first.
Great list! Here's mine (it's not the most original): Ristar Castle of Illusion Shinobi 3 Toejam and Earl Sonic 3 Kid Chameleon Xmen 2: Clone Wars Streets of Rage 2 Gunstar Heroes Toy Story

I just can't believe that I finally found someone that likes the Revenge of the Shinobi the same way as I. Never in a Top Ten list I saw RotS higher than 5 and I was so frustrated! I'm so happy to see that a lot of games that we have in common, too! Thank you for the vid, I follow you for a long time by now, and I'm really happy to know that both of us have the same fav for the Genesis
My top ten ,no particular order Revenge of shinobi Ghouls and ghost Shadow dancer Castlevania bloodlines Contra hardcorps Mystical defender Sonic the hedgehog Forgotten worlds Shinobi three Street fighter champ edition
Great list and more importantly, a very entertaining video that gives us the chance to either discover some old gems or remember the ones we have forgotten. I wish I knew Phantasy Star back then, in 2019 I just don't have the patience for the grinding...I wish that saga was remastered. Anyways, from the top of my head, some of my favorite games in Genesis where: Gunstar Heroes, Contra H.C, SFII: CE, Earthworm Jim, Castlevania, Mega bomberman, TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, Yu Yu Hakusho, Road Rash 2 and finally Sonic & Knuckles.
Your top 10 is very unique. I'd even say mostly hidden gems. I also recommend Uncharted Waters. Back in the day, this game was probably the most advanced open world game I've played.
Revenge of Shinobi is a very respectable pick for #1. Honestly, it might take that crown for me as well. While Shinobi 3 is also a golden title and I love it probably just as much, there is something very timeless to me about Revenge. I think it is sort of the poster child for what the Genesis represented for gamers back in that day. The graphics and music are excellent. The game play is the perfect combination of challenging and rewarding. The bosses are memorable and the finale was really tense. This is one of the first games I think of when I think of Sega and one of the first games I want to boot up when I pick up a Genesis controller.
Really enjoyed this mate it’s so nostalgic, Gunstar heroes was one of my favourites along with Castle of illusion, Strider (for sure) Earth worm Jim, Eco the dolphin, Road Rash, Altered Beast, Quack shots, street fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 1-2, Micro machines. Sonic n streets of Rage like u mentioned. Fantastic console.
Revenge of Shibobi is so good. I have to commend you on a #1 I didn't see coming. Road Rash series is perhaps my favorite Genesis games but at that age I just wanted to ride motorcycles, and that game let me do it and beat people with chains, to boot!
YEP!! Phantasy Star on the Master System is my favorite RPG of all time too!!! I can't believe that I actually beat it. DarkFalz is crazy hard if you are not at level 22 (at least). :)
Hey gamers of the world!! Have a freaking awesome day!! Sega Genesis was my first system as a young child. My mom had bought it for herself and I ended up playing it like crazy lol I remember Sonic 2 and Jungle Book being the first games I ever played. Be safe everyone, happy gaming ✌🏻❤️🎮- The Genuine Nintendo Geek OfMonstersHollow 🤓
Am I the only one shouting the name of every game when I hear the music? I got every single game right and everything is right in the world. ;) Name that game!
I love Super Thunder Blade, Thunderforce 3, Golden Axe, Golden Axe 2, Battletoads & Double Dragon: the ultimate team, Last Battle, Strider, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Outlander, Sonic, Sonic 2, The Revenge of Shinobi, Super Mônaco GP, Rolling Thunder 2, Rolling Thunder 3, Streets of Rage 2, Elemental Master, Afterburner, Contra: Hard Corps, Double Dragon, Immortal and Crude Buster.
The Genesis was my favorite 16 bit console. Shining Force Shining force 2 Streets Of Rage 2 Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors Of The Eternal Sun Thunder Force IV Phantasy Star 2 Alicia Dragoon Land Stalker Sonic The Hedgehog Gaiares
I had a genesis as my first console but never had that many games for it. Most of them were Sonic games. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was how I got to be such a good Puyo Puyo player. I'm trying to catch up on great games I missed out on via emulator. I really like Alien Soldier, haven't quite finished it yet but it's gotta be one of the best boss rush games I've ever played. There's something like 60 games on my list but I'm particularly interested in playing Gun Star Heroes, Crusader of Centy, and Landstalker.
I still play the Streets of Rage Trilogy alot , I enjoy that and Double Dragons on this system. Shinobi games , Shining in the Datkness , Super Thunderblade , Last Battle ,Golden Axe Trilogy man those were days playing those with friends. But now I get to introduce my kids to these games not just on my Genesis collection but it made me feel good when my Kids asked me to pre order a Genesis mini for their birthdays. I swear it was awesome to hear them ask that question lol so I ordered it for them.
I never understood the point of limiting yourself to 10, 20, or even 50 games. I mean, there's hundreds of games on these consoles, and there's a good 100-200 (at least) games that are worth at least giving a shot. Seems like a waste of an opportunity to make a huge list instead, with every game you think is good. Even if it's split into 10-game videos. (Not that I'm knocking the video, it's still a good video. I enjoy your vids) Also, I feel like if I made a top 10, it'd be a bit different than what most people end up with. I'd have the likes of the first Bubsy, Crue Ball, and Top Gear 2 on there. Along with a few of the usuals like Streets of Rage 2, and TMNT. Sonic probably wouldn't even be on my top 10. I like Sonic, but I like other games more. Considering your top 10, you must LOVE the Sega Genesis Classics collection.. How's Crusader of Centy compared to Zelda? Like, is it a LTTP? Is it original NES Zelda with better graphics? I ask because I honestly never cared for the original NES Zelda, but I played the fuck out of LTTP. I prefer having that little bit of direction, instead of the random wandering. I've always been curious about Phantasy Star. Is it like Final Fantasy, where each game is it's own separate story? Can I play one without playing the others?
I've never beat D & D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, but I played it quite a bit as well, and it is a really good game, would possibly put it in my top 10.
Sword of vermilion is brilliant. Definitely my favourite rpg from the mega drive. I tried to play it again as an adult tho and it hasn't really aged well, just cos there's sooooo much grinding.
I think if Johnny was shown a briefcase with 50 million dollars in it and was told: “You can have this briefcase if you can say “Andrew” instead of “My friend Andrew”. I don’t think he could do it 😂 Jokes obviously, love this channel ❤️
I've only played a few Genesis games, I'm a Sega newbie, but my top 10 so far gotta be 10: Sonic 3 and Knuckles 9: Rocket Knight Adventures 8: Shining Force 2 7: Advance Busterhawk GleyLancer 6: Crusader of Centy 5: Beyond Oasis 4: Fire Mustang 3: Gunstar Heroes 2: Phantasy Star IV 1: Thunder Force IV
Love collecting for this console. Almost have a master complete collection. Working on it, hopefully this year it’s done for the MurrayNJ08 Gaming Museum.
My Top 10 genesis games I love the most are 10: Mortal Kombat II 9: Castle Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse 8: Road Rash II 7: Thunderforce III 6: Monster World IV 5: Phantasy Star IV 4: Crusader Of Centy 3: Earthworm Jim 2: Ecco The Dolphin 1: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Kool Top 10! The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis is my favorite console of all time! My top 10 so far would be...... but a top 10 is hard cause there is so many good Mega Drive games 1. Strider (This is still one of the most amazing looking games for me and in some parts looks even better than the Arcade Version and some of the soundtrack is better IMO The Japanese Mega Drive Version is my preferred version and it looks amazing in RGB I might ad). 2. Castlevania: Bloodlines ( I like it even more than Rondo Of Blood and im a huge PC Engine fan). 3. Crusader Of Centy 4. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 5. Sonic The Hedgehog 6. Ghouls N Ghost 7. Phantasy Star IV 8. Phantasy Star 2 9. Streets Of Rage 2 10. (tie) Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition. The most complete SF CE and looks better than the PC Engine and SNES versions when comparing them all in RGB and also plays better. 10. (tie) The EA Sports games. Im a big sports fan and Genesis brought good sports action home for me that was better than what the SNES and TG16/PC Engine had to offer.
1. Strider 2. Revenge of Shinobi 3. Magical Hat Turbo Flying Adventure 4. Golden Axe 5. Forgotten Worlds 6. Streets of Rage 7. ESWAT 8. DJ Boy 9. Valis III 10. Hellfire ... Yeah, it's tough limiting to 10 on this amazing system eh 11.Gynoug/Wings of Wor 12. Stormlord Megadrive rules
10. Captain America and the Avengers 9. Battle Toads and Double Dragon 8. Maximum Carnage 7. Castle of Illusions 6. Super Street Fighter 2 5. Sonic 3 4. SOR 3 3. Shinobi 3 2. Fatal Fury 2 1. Gun Star Heroes.
Genesis was my glory days of gaming in the mid 90's. My top ten... 10. Power Rangers The Movie 9. Castlevania Bloodlines 8. Road Rash 7. Mickey Mania 6. The Jungle Book 5. TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist 4. Sonic 2 3. Earthworm Jim 2. Vectorman 1. Sonic & Knuckles
I never got much into Shining Force 1 for some reason, but I love SHF2 SO DAMN MUCH! Also, waiting for this 90 minutes episode on Revenge of the Shinobi
My favourite Megadrive games I had a really good time with are: Sonic the Hedgehog Zero Tolerance Shining Force Earthworm Jim The Lion King Mortal Kombat Streets of Rage 2 Aladdin Virtua Racing Primal Rage *in no specific order, they are all just great!
I am watching a lot of your old videos, and i find it so sad, that even 4 years ago, people on the internet are so sensitive, so delicate..... Get so triggered by people's opinions, that you are forced to say ''This is your opinion, not an official list, people not to get offended if their particular favourite game isn't on the list''. Unfortunately, in 2023 now, it is even worse. Great video fella and really enjoying some of the old content.
This is how you do a video. Passion, excitement, and good taste
Nerd Cred +1 due to Robotech coat.
Crusader of Centy (Called 'Soleil' here in Australia) was fantastic! Easily my favourite Genesis game. Glad to see you appreciated it.

Johnny! Strider is definitely on my top 10 list. I just got ghouls & ghosts last year and i got spoiled play the SNES version first. I found it really difficult but definitely a great game to have.
I use to love the casino level in Sonic 2 for some reason. I played it over and over just to play that stage.

Last gen I had a 360.
The I bought a PS3 to play Ps1 and Ps2 games. But I also wante try some new games on that machine (some exclusives I already have on the PS4)
great selection!! thank you
How amazing would it be if they made Shining Force 4 like how they made Streets of Rage 4?
Help me out here. There was an SNES game that was similar to Sonic. It featured a... fox? Anyone remember the name of that one?
My fave is Chuck Rock 2: Son of Chuck
No shadowrun? Zombies? Rocket knight?
Fuck yeah I got my Revenge of Shinobi 1.00 too! My number one Genesis game as well of my first Genesis game I played when I was like 2 or 3.
Alright, will there be Streets or Rage, or Streets of Rage 2?
How come this console was named Sega Genesis in America and Sega Megadrive in Asia/Europe?
Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my favorite game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, bar none.
Only watched to Sword of Vermillion but IMO for RPG I'd put Shadowrun and Shiningforce 2.
Your top 10 is very unique. I'd even say mostly hidden gems.
I also recommend Uncharted Waters.
Back in the day, this game was probably the most advanced open world game I've played.
GENESIS DOES GENESIS DOES GENESIS DOES GENESIS DOES.....
WHAT NINTENDON'T.
I loved Gain Ground
My top 5 - The Punisher, Castlevania, Robocop vs Terminator, Wrestlemania The Arcade game and Mortal Kombat 3
YEP!! Phantasy Star on the Master System is my favorite RPG of all time too!!! I can't believe that I actually beat it. DarkFalz is crazy hard if you are not at level 22 (at least). :)
You're becoming a top ten channel with all these lists...
He has the best top tens tho lol
Even though Earthworm jim was on SNES too it's my favorite game of my early days gaming
I got every single game right and everything is right in the world. ;)
Name that game!
yeah it was fun knowing the next game before he said it
I never had a Sega Genesis. Watching your video makes me wish I had one.
Sega Genesis ! So many memories 💗❤️☺️
Castlevania and Soleil (aka Crusader of Centy) are my favourites
I love Super Thunder Blade, Thunderforce 3, Golden Axe, Golden Axe 2, Battletoads & Double Dragon: the ultimate team, Last Battle, Strider, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Outlander, Sonic, Sonic 2, The Revenge of Shinobi, Super Mônaco GP, Rolling Thunder 2, Rolling Thunder 3, Streets of Rage 2, Elemental Master, Afterburner, Contra: Hard Corps, Double Dragon, Immortal and Crude Buster.
The Genesis was my favorite 16 bit console.
Shining Force
Shining force 2
Streets Of Rage 2
Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors Of The Eternal Sun
Thunder Force IV
Phantasy Star 2
Alicia Dragoon
Land Stalker
Sonic The Hedgehog
Gaiares
Warriors of the Eternal Sun! Great choice. I never see anyone pick that game.
Beyond Oasis
It's the best game on the sega!
Play this, you won't regret it
I must be the only one in the world prefers Streets of rage 1 over 2
I was like you once
I’m on the streets of rage 2 band wagon as well.
Me too! Adam was the best and i like that you can call backup.
I enjoy your vids)
Also, I feel like if I made a top 10, it'd be a bit different than what most people end up with.

I played Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun quite a bit back in the day 👻

great game!
I think if Johnny was shown a briefcase with 50 million dollars in it and was told:
“You can have this briefcase if you can say “Andrew” instead of “My friend Andrew”.
I don’t think he could do it 😂
Jokes obviously, love this channel ❤️

I am watching a lot of your old videos, and i find it so sad, that even 4 years ago, people on the internet are so sensitive, so delicate..... Get so triggered by people's opinions, that you are forced to say ''This is your opinion, not an official list, people not to get offended if their particular favourite game isn't on the list''.
Unfortunately, in 2023 now, it is even worse.
Great video fella and really enjoying some of the old content.
Revenge of Shinobi is also my favourite game of the Megadrive/Genesis...wow
