The lack of walkthroughs and limited access to help is something that people really don't understand about playing these old games. I remember playing some of these games for hours just trying to figure out what I needed to do next. That sense of accomplishment when you finally figured it out was amazing.
I never thought about this aspect, but damn...you are 100% right! Just like movie trailers in recent years giving away the entire freaking movie, as opposed to old school movie trailers giving you about 10 seconds. It's the same thing. You don't get really any surprises anymore because everything is given to you before the games even freaking come out now.

A Link To the Past. I know a lot of people love it but I'm 24 years old, I never owned a Super Nintendo, I recently played that for the first time ever and it is one of the best games that I've ever played. No nostalgia here. I hear that a Switch version is in the horizon, can't wait to play that again.
You should also try Link's Awakening, it's very similar in play to A Link to the Past, some people even say it was better, but A Link to the Past is still my favorite, though I never tried the DX version of Link's Awakening on the Game Boy Color, which was fully colorized, and there is also the remake coming to the Switch later this year, so it could still become my new favorite.
Heck of a list but always love the passion and the love for gaming :). It is a true blessing at 47 years old I have seen and played gaming from the start of it all to it's current present.

Ow, definitely. This game just has the perfect mix of everything. Great music, atmospheric soundscape’s, graphics, characters and a great, simple story that just speaks to me. Just having a boy going on a big adventure with his trusty dog was just so much fun and it’s so well done. The gameplay is very similar to Secret of Mana, but it has enough unique ideas if it’s own that I really love!
I actually like Yoshi's Island more than Super Mario World as well. It's drastically different, the graphics are unique, and playing as yoshi doing the 2 player mini games were fantastic

This! I was so sad when Prince of Persia Classic was released without the SNES exclusive levels. At the time I didn't know they were exclusive to the SNES, since it was the only version I had ever played.
Love the list! FF3 is one of my all time favorite games. I legit just got my first turbo controller ever and as I'm watching this video as I get to do the Lete river exp trick for the first time in 25 years!
I remember figuring out that you could play Co-op on Secret of Mana: I was like 10 and my friend owned a copy. He's fighting the water temple boss (I think). He is struggling and I'm screaming at him what to do, like a kid does, I picked up the other controller to do what I was telling him or something and HOLLYY SHIT! I'm playing the Sprite guy. That was awesome.
Dude, good for you! Your top 10 was solid and I wasn't even angry that you didn't include DK games into the mix. Good for you for holding onto some of those gems that were sentimental. You rock! Keep doing what you do, friend!
I love this channel. I rewatch videos all the time. Some channels I follow are ran by people who honestly talk down to fans and are generally rude, but Johnny never lets me down.
Part 2 is great, but part 1 sure is a weird game lol. Still wonderful though! I compare them to Lufia. Part 2 is phenomenal, but part one is still charming and beloved.
First video I catch of you. Love the charisma and how damn happy you look. Being 35 and growing up with an NES and SNES, I can relate. Those were happy days ! Thanks for the memories.
I didn’t get around to FF6 until my 20s. I had beaten quite a few of the games already, 10 having been my first and still possibly my favorite. I was afraid to tackle 6 because the internet is known to overhype things. It was not overhyped.
I just watched your video for the first time and I think it’s awesome how compassionate you are about the games and how excited you were to buy them and they brought me back towhen I played all these games. Thanks for the awesome video look forward to watching more of them
Just came across the channel and top content. Went crazy today and bought a Wii U. Watching The Thing (1982) on it. Subscribed to both this and the film channel!!!

Sir, your video came as a recommendation for me here on UA-cam, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. After sitting here watching your video, I immediately subscribed to your channel. We share the same love and admiration for video games, and we're the age practically. These memories will be something nobody will ever be able to take from us. I sincerely appreciated your video. Well done my friend..
Your #1 and #2 are the same for me, but I'd pull Earthbound and bump up Link to the Past and Super Metroid to the #3 and #4 spots respectively, adding Super Mario Kart to the #5 spot simply due to the amount of hours and fun I've dumped into it being my favorite two-player game on the system growing up.
It was such a different feeling when games came out back then. Great times that I shared with my friends and even the friends that I gained later in life felt like I grew up with them just because of these experiences.
Man you really know how to squeeze nostalgia out of people! Glad to see Secret of Mana made it. That’s my favorite SNES game of all time. Such a fantastic adventure.
Wow, my list would be virtually the same. FF 3(aka 6) is the best FF all time, and in my opinion the best game of all time. I was 13 when it came out. That overworld theme is indeed the best one in any videogame. Chronotrigger is definitely the 2nd best RPG of all time. And LTTP is the best Zelda, maybe tied with OOT.
Love adding to the super Nintendo collection. just did a haul last week and picked up 45 boxed games. supposed to meet a guy this weekend hopefully he’s got some good stuff.
No Donkey Kong Country 1 or 2? No Super Mario Kart? Surprising. I haven't gotten any of your videos recommended to me in a long time, but I enjoy them when I do.
This is three years too late, but your top 3, is my top 3, and the leveling of fondness and nostalgia I share for these three games is immeasurable. I revisit them each, at least once a year.
That game is actually super pimp. I love that it had rpg elements to it where you could equip different abilities from your menu screen. I just wish it wasnt 2.5D. It didnt age too well.
This list is pretty typical(nothing wrong with that) and it demonstrates the main problem I have with the SNES. Many games that are generally considered to be the best on the system are games I don't like. Super Mario World is great. But I'm not a big RPG guy. I don't love Zelda and Super Metroid like others do. I don't like Contra 3. I don't like Axelay. I don't like Super Ghouls n Ghosts. I don't like Castlevania 4(I love 1 and 3 on NES, Rondo on PCE, and Bloodlines on Genesis). I'm not complaining about the games you chose -- your list is your own -- just pointing out a problem I have unique to the SNES. I do like some SNES games, just stuff thats not as popular and some imports. Ninja Warriors, which got an honorable mention, is probably my favorite. Thanks for sharing.
Were you more of a Sega person back then? I had friends in high school who said the same thing, and I was cool with it, because it gave us quite a variety of games to play!
@@dschult3 I was. I started to second guess things later in 1994 when I decided to get the SNES. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but I did like it and got to play a bunch of cool games for it between what I had, friends, and rentals. I mentioned Contra 3 and it's the mode 7 that kills the game for me. Some games I did like didn't hold up over time for me. I agree with your conclusion as it was a real treat visiting friends and getting to play some good games on a system you didn't have.
Man, when I modded my SNES Classic, I added games I found in these types of videos. "Must haves" for the SNES, and I found myself in the same shoes.... I didnt like 90% of them. Most of the games that are exalted by popular opinion are just overrated. I think part of it may be because they aren't nostalgic to us? Either way, yeah...I had to sift through a lot of titles to find what I wanted.
1. Secret of Mana 2. Zelda 3. Super Mario RPG (The secret fight against Culex blew me and my friend's minds back then haha!) Illusion of Time, Demons Crest, Mega Man X, Turtles in Time, Mario Kart. There are so many great games on the Snes and a lot of good memories. Great video man, love the positivity!
My top 10 1 Super Castlevania 4 2 Legend Of Zelda LTTP 3 Super Mario World 4 Super Star Wars 5 Starwing 6 Street Fighter 2 Turbo 7 F Zero 8 Plok 9 Super Mario Allstars 10 Cybernator
Yes! Those are all great games. Your views reflect how I felt playing these too. So many great other ones too. Actraiser and Actraiser 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Contra 3, Super Adventure Island, Mystic Quest, Super Castlevania, Pocky and Rocky, Mortal Kombat games, Killer Instinct, Axelay, Knights of the Round, Top Gear games, Super Punchout, Sprigan Powered and so, SO many other ones!!!
Thanks for the great info. I really enjoy your enthusiasm and excellent stories. My best game I played for many many hours was Rock ‘n Roll Racing with my game playing buddy.
I share a lot of similar titles in my top ten, but my all-time favorite game on the console was Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Sure, it was also a Genesis title, but my cousin and I would play the shit out of ZAMN on SNES. It is, in my opinion, possibly one of the greatest co-op experiences on consoles. I love you Johnny! You and Rob have kept me company for years, and I love listening to your videos when I play my games. The only UA-camr that I watch and look forward to new content from.
1:21 i LOVE those aesthetics! I have to play this. I had a set of those small rubber ninja guys you could get in a package, and they all had that exaggerated sprite art. Still my favorite style for games. Most people prefer realism, i like the more exaggerated and stylized stuff.
I really love the passion and love you show when you talk about games. Please make a top 10 for game boy/ game boy advance and wii games. Keep it up and thanks for sharing
Man, what a wonderful video and what a wonderful channel! Your passion for video games and nostalgia are amazing. I'm from 96, so i'm only played snes games on emulators, but still, i became a huge fan. Snes and Ps2 are the best consoles for me, no doubt about that (ps4 has a amazing library too). Maaan, ff6 world map themes, holy cow, the dark world theme...My top ten snes games is: 10-Mega Man X 9-Super Mario Rpg 8-Final Fantasy IV 7-Yoshi's Island (SMW2) 6-Donkey Kong Country 2 5-Super Metroid 4-Super Mario World 3-Final Fantasy VI 2-Zelda: a link to the past 1-Chrono Trigger
The timing of this video lol yesterday me and my husband started our snes/nes collection. Picked up Super Street Fighter II Turbo and then my brother gave me our old copy of Maximum Carnage that we used to have as kids ;u; He also had a nes game? (Time Lords ) I don't even remember owning a nes... I really regret not hanging on to the rest of our snes games. We had super mario, a link to the past and a handful of others. Gonna be hard building the collection up since we are starting so late. Great video Johnny!

I never thought about this aspect, but damn...you are 100% right! Just like movie trailers in recent years giving away the entire freaking movie, as opposed to old school movie trailers giving you about 10 seconds. It's the same thing. Solid list. Evermore is so underrated that it should be a crime. Gaia is another one that's often overlooked.
Super Mario RPG is excellent too
I actually like Yoshi's Island more than Super Mario World as well. It's drastically different, the graphics are unique, and playing as yoshi doing the 2 player mini games were fantastic
Amazing nostalgia and stories. This is why we all love you John!
I dont know about top 10 Becoz Theres too many good games but My top 3 is
1-final fantasy 6

The SNES has my all time fav Port of Prince Of Persia.
This! I was so sad when Prince of Persia Classic was released without the SNES exclusive levels. At the time I didn't know they were exclusive to the SNES, since it was the only version I had ever played.
PoP would go to my top ten SNES list.
Loved your passion and nostalgia, keep up the great work man!
I love this channel. I rewatch videos all the time. Some channels I follow are ran by people who honestly talk down to fans and are generally rude, but Johnny never lets me down.
Breath of Fire 1/2 are my two favorite games of all time
Part 2 is great, but part 1 sure is a weird game lol. Still wonderful though!
I compare them to Lufia. Part 2 is phenomenal, but part one is still charming and beloved.
I played 1....how would you rank 2 compared to 1? Better , even or worse?
This is my first time watching your videos. I love your personality and your joy for retro games is contagious
1. Donkey Kong country
2. Super Mario world
3. A link to the past
4. Super Castlevania 4
5. Final Fantasy 3
I love your enthusiasm Johnny, and you remind me constantly of why videogames are so dear to me. I can hear you talk about them all day!
Love these videos they are keeping me sane in these crazy times lol
First video I catch of you. Love the charisma and how damn happy you look.
Being 35 and growing up with an NES and SNES, I can relate.
Those were happy days !
Thanks for the memories.
I didn’t get around to FF6 until my 20s. I had beaten quite a few of the games already, 10 having been my first and still possibly my favorite. I was afraid to tackle 6 because the internet is known to overhype things.
It was not overhyped.
You have a good positive channel instead of others that are angry. Keep it up man! Great top 10 list BTW
Good video! I like your back stories to each of them also! You're an awesome UA-camr!
I just watched your video for the first time and I think it’s awesome how compassionate you are about the games and how excited you were to buy them and they brought me back towhen I played all these games. Thanks for the awesome video look forward to watching more of them
5. Mega Man X
4. Donkey Kong Country 2
3. Final Fantasy VI
2. Chrono Trigger
1. Super Metroid
Just came across the channel and top content. Went crazy today and bought a Wii U. Watching The Thing (1982) on it. Subscribed to both this and the film channel!!!

(Never had Super Metroid, otherwise it‘ll be here)
Edit: living in Germany, we never had Final Fantasy II/III, nor got we Chrono Trigger - I played FF3 on my SNES Mini (Same Games as the Us) and I was stuned by the opening Soundtrack walking towards this town!
The Lion King - Congo's Caper - Earthworm Jim - Super Mario World - Super Castlevania 4 - Donkeykong Country - R-Type - Chronotrigger - Zelda - Secret of Mana......... 1st 10 games that came to my mind, so Im just gonna go with that XD lol

Dude! Aliens vs Predator!! That game was so badass. I remember renting that so many times as a kid.
Well done my friend..
ff6 is my top 1 snes game too.
Great video man. I’m 36 and a lot of these games hold special places in my heart as well.
FF6
Secret of mana
Terranigma
Chrono trigger
Lufia 2
Soul blazer
Zelda link to the past
Donkey kong
Seiken densetsu 3
Super mario rpg
omg almost forgot terranigma 😯
I love your retelling of the day you got these games, reminds me of my time spent with them as a kid
Under rated gems: Joe and Mac, Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon), Smart Ball (Jerry boy), Bio Metal, Goof Troop, Clayfighter,
Hahaha!! Joe and Mac!! I used to play that along with Super double dragon with my brother.
@@syminite1 Yeah i use to play with my sister, so much fun 2 player co op
Brain lord
Man you really know how to squeeze nostalgia out of people! Glad to see Secret of Mana made it. That’s my favorite SNES game of all time. Such a fantastic adventure.
Everyone loves Chrono Trigger, I've never played it. I think I'm missing out. 😔
It's never too late :) it lives up to the hype
Great to see your love for this top 10 dude. Thanks for the video cheered me up this morning.
“I trained my girlfriend at the time to be amazing at it.” Thanks for paying it forward.
The way you describe every game took me back to that time when legendary games were born and our childhood was more than magical. Thank you!
Thank you for mentioning Samurai Pizza Cats.
I was 12 when FF6 came out. It was/is the greatest gaming experience I’ve ever had.
Sorry I know yoh posted this a while ago but I agree. My one friend and I were absolutely obsessed. The game never got old.
Yeah, alttp, and oot, are magnificent games. I couldn't decide which is better between the two.
Love adding to the super Nintendo collection. just did a haul last week and picked up 45 boxed games. supposed to meet a guy this weekend hopefully he’s got some good stuff.
These are not ranked as I can't.
-Super Castlevania IV
-Final Fantasy IV/Vi
-Super Maro World
-Super Metroid
-F-Zero
And the list is growing.
No Donkey Kong Country 1 or 2? No Super Mario Kart? Surprising. I haven't gotten any of your videos recommended to me in a long time, but I enjoy them when I do.
"I trained my girlfriend at the time to be amazing at it". What a badass thing to say about sf2.
Lol
Great List Johnny! I have a couple of games id probably switch out but thats def a top 10 list of games that are must haves for the system!
love earthbound and chrono trigger
This is three years too late, but your top 3, is my top 3, and the leveling of fondness and nostalgia I share for these three games is immeasurable. I revisit them each, at least once a year.
You said you'd love a sequel to Super Ghouls N' Ghosts. Are you aware of Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins?
That game is actually super pimp. I love that it had rpg elements to it where you could equip different abilities from your menu screen. I just wish it wasnt 2.5D. It didnt age too well.
Are you based in Vancouver, BC? You mentioned Bellis Fair in the video, which is just over the border in Bellingham, WA.
Donkey kong county 2 and yoshi’s island are definitely some of my favorite
Needs more Donkey Kong Country 😛
1. Secret of Mana
2. Zelda
3. Super Mario RPG (The secret fight against Culex blew me and my friend's minds back then haha!)
Illusion of Time, Demons Crest, Mega Man X, Turtles in Time, Mario Kart. There are so many great games on the Snes and a lot of good memories. Great video man, love the positivity!
My top 10
1 Super Castlevania 4
2 Legend Of Zelda LTTP
3 Super Mario World
4 Super Star Wars
5 Starwing
6 Street Fighter 2 Turbo
7 F Zero
8 Plok
9 Super Mario Allstars
10 Cybernator
Chronotrigger
Earthbound
Link to the past
As another Canadian Gamer in his 40s, great list. Thanks for the memories
Terras theme is amazing!! My top 5 Snes games are:
1 Zelda A Link to the Past
2 Super Mario World
3 Earthbound
4 Terranigma
5 Dragon quest 5
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. So many marvelous memories from that era.
2:50 Star Fox would be higher for me if it ran at something above 5fps.
This is a gamer and not a collector. He talks about the games in a way that hits home. Subscribed.
Anyone who was an RPG fan back then remembers how special and amazing FF6 was. Squaresoft really captured a moment in time with that game.
Great video. The SNES was my childhood it’s so nostalgic for me. Super Mario world, Donkey Kong country and Aladdin were the first games I ever played
Maaan, ff6 world map themes, holy cow, the dark world theme...My top ten snes games is:
10-Mega Man X
9-Super Mario Rpg
8-Final Fantasy IV
7-Yoshi's Island (SMW2)
6-Donkey Kong Country 2
5-Super Metroid
4-Super Mario World
3-Final Fantasy VI
2-Zelda: a link to the past
1-Chrono Trigger
The timing of this video lol yesterday me and my husband started our snes/nes collection. Picked up Super Street Fighter II Turbo and then my brother gave me our old copy of Maximum Carnage that we used to have as kids ;u; He also had a nes game? (Time Lords ) I don't even remember owning a nes...
I really regret not hanging on to the rest of our snes games. We had super mario, a link to the past and a handful of others. Gonna be hard building the collection up since we are starting so late.
Great video Johnny!
