  • In this guitar lesson, I’ll take you through one of the best ways to practice guitar triads, namely using a 1 4 5 chord progression. The primary I IV V chords form some of the most common chord progressions in music so it’s a perfect way to learn, practice, and memorize the guitar triad shapes.
For this lesson, we'll be working with guitar triad shapes on string set 2 (strings 2/3/4) but all the music theory concepts will work with triad shapes on any of the guitar string sets. I'd encourage you to explore the ideas with any other triad shapes you have learned.
I have a FREE PDF of all the close voicing triads available from my website...www.rynaylorguitar.com/free-g...

Learning my triads has been the single best thing for my guitar journey. If I could do it all over again I would start with learning my fretboard notes, major scales, and major triads. THEN I would learn how to build cowboy chords and barre chords with triads.

I have known my triads up and down the neck across string sets, but linking the major triadic I IV and V shapes/chords as you demonstrated was a welcome and well-deserved slap on the side of the head and my motivation for signing up on Patreon! Thanks for breaking it down "Barney Style" and not requiring me to look for yet another UA-cam video to explain what you were doing. You explained what you were going to do, did it several times with easy-to-follow diagrams, then broke down the "we do" practice section into independent parts before putting the new learning in the context of a backing track. You might think, "Well, duh, that's the sensible way to do it." You're right, but it is rarely executed with such aplomb. I'm not a beginner, but sometimes the gaps in my learning shame me into thinking I am. Hence, my detour and discovery of your channel. Thank you.

Ry, this lesson really resonated with how my brain prefers to learn. I have never had a solid mental representation on the basic I IV V chord locations and in a voice leading sequence. I created 7 fret chord boxes and wrote out all the I IV V sequences several times. Next I will practice just the first set of I IV V chords on the 123 string set. So much more efficient to play all three triad versions in a related, voice leading group.

It's strange how some channels get loads of views and in fact the content is only ok, while one like this, which I found instantly applicable and so well-explained, only has a couple thousand, at least so far. Great video Ry! I got a lot out of it that I could put to use right away. Thanks for sharing with us.

Wrong. This is very well explained and not confusing at all. You just don’t have enough knowledge of music yet, and this has nothing to do with him. You find it confusing because you try to understand high school stuff without elementary school education. Start at your level with beginner videos, learn the basics, and work your way up.
