    Would recommend putting in concrete floor, the upfront cost is high but in the long run the concrete floor is much cheaper and beneficial.

    Hi Brad,
    I'm not a farmer but I grew up on a farm with two old timber barns. They had dirt floors. We never had a problem with keeping animals in them and likely the previous owners had no problems.
    For now, save your money on the concrete. If you decide on concrete later, definitely add drains because of the occasional heavy blowing rains you receive there. Also, folks who work in large department stores and are on their feet all day probably would like softer floors. Animals are no different.
    Your place is coming along nicely. That new shed is almost a show piece. Good videos, bro

    I was starting to think you guys were not feeling well. I hadn't seen you put out a video, so I decided to check and realized I had missed this video. YT usually lets me know when you have a new video out, not this time.
    Pretty interesting update with the barn / stalls. Most of the farmers I have been to, prefer dirt floors for their animals in their stalls. But I am sure there are experienced farmers that can give you the best advice, and then you decide what's best for you.
    This year is going to be awesome for you and Deb!

    We use to do a French drain in each stall with pea grave and sand on top. Now we are old and i enjoy not taking care of all the animals. My wife misses them a lot though. Out at night in below zero temps are not missed by me. Your barn is great so far ad a really good design. Argument for equipment shed, many animals found hydraulic hoses delicious.

    Beautiful building! Nice job! I am hopefully getting started on my new building up here in West Michigan soon. One question, why do they install the steel horizontal? Up here in
    we install the steel verticle.

    • @PineyGroveHomestead
      @PineyGroveHomestead  6 місяців тому +1

      It's cheaper to run the sheet metal horizontal than vertical in a steel building. With horizontal metal, you only need vertical studs. With vertical sheet metal, you need girts over the studs, or in between them to have a place to fasten the sheet metal. A horizontally sheathed metal building is always cheaper for that reason.

    Very nice looking barn! Question, does UA-cam hide your videos or did the Summit deal reduce the views you get? Never seen a channel with 80,000 subs get so few views, Like this one and the last couple only like a 1,000 views? Something can't be right with the number of subs you have

    • @PineyGroveHomestead
      @PineyGroveHomestead  6 місяців тому

      There are much larger channels that get less views per video. The UA-cam algorithm is complicated. All creators can do is make the best videos they can and let UA-cam find the audience. It's all a mystery.

    For animals and equipment storage, I would use dirt. I would only use concrete for work surfaces. Even if the concrete is brushed, you need to put down lime to prevent animal hooves from slipping. That's what we did on the dairy farm. Plus, the cows never stayed in their stalls any longer than it took the milk them. If you have animals that live in the stalls concrete won't be very comfortable. I'm planning on having a dirt floor in my barn. But my animals will overwinter in the barn. There'll be a lot of compost being created :-) your barn is looking great!

  • @TheCompactHomestead
    @TheCompactHomestead 6 місяців тому +1

    I know nothing about that type of barn, but it seems like concrete would be harsh on animal hooves and would be hard to keep clean. Looks nice so far though, think you're on the right track.

    • @PineyGroveHomestead
      @PineyGroveHomestead  6 місяців тому

      Heavier animals like horses would need stall padding but it wouldn't be an issue for goats. It's easier to shovel "stuff" off concrete than off of dirt, then you can hose it off. We're still weighing our options. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @CreativeTubeChannel

    I hate breaking it to you, but if you think the concrete saves your barn from odor, you are 100% wrong. Even if you potty train your cows, they still have odor in your barn that's natural in live stock. My opinion leave it dirt it's cost saving and natural for the animal world. Animals are happier with dirt. They always smell, and that's the great thing about barns . Don't you love the smell? Leave the whole thing, dirt, no worries of odor. There will always be even with concrete.
