As for the gun that has the magazine up top, the iron sights for it is offset to the side while the magazine is places as much as possible to the opposing side. Well that is for some guns that are loaded that way, I can’t say for certain that one if the magazine is to the side or if it is centered while the sights are offset. I would need to brush up on my WWII guns to be sure.
12:00 Soviet hates ads and sponsorships. In his FAQ he actually recommends that his viewers use ad block on his videos in case any companies claim his videos and put ads on them. He says that his patreon and stream donations keep him well paid enough to never have to compromise his work.
It's kind of the same reason why he never wants to get an editor, since he feels that his style is so important to the videos that no one else could be trained to make the same creative decisions as him.
And a lot of people have told him that exact thing many times before so either he doesn't read the comments or he keeps forgetting
yeah hes spent years creating a style for himself and no editor no matter how good can recreate it
i seriously hope he reads this
He actually has a well paid job
Istg, there's a god damn video essay someone made just to gush over how good Soviet's editing is.
And I'm of the same thought that this is perfectly justified.
Kudos to soviet for all the keyframing of the text, I can't even imagine how long some of the scenes would take unless the automation has advanced quite a bit recently
@DallasRM1 But he also doesn't feel like making the videos 80% of the time
@@Adraxone mood ngl.
this took NINE weeks because of few problems, arma's inconsistent FPS is one of them. that and this is a double length video. he also had to re-make a lot of the cuts for the final scene because all recordings were first person only and basically unusable for most of it.
@@Adraxone the man streams him animating sometimes. It just really does take that long. It took an entire 3 hour stream to do a short 8 second segment for tf2
some videos such as CSGO are easy to automate and can be done much faster than arma 3 due to the way the games function. He points out that your team in CS has unique coloured dots above their heads that are almost always visible making it the perfect target for autotracking.
Combine that with a much more stable framerate and stuff like autotracking will do its job very well.
In arma 3 the framerate is much less consistent and you rarely have good, always identifiable markers for your target. That's why the arma videos require much more keyframing and manual labour.
22:08 I believe that's a Bren light machine gun. You can't really tell, but the sights are offset to the left, so you're not looking at a magazine. This does however mean that the weapon can only be effectively fired from the right shoulder.
Its 1940's UK, you are right handed or you will be made to be right handed. Kids who were left handed were regularly forbidden in school from writing with their left and had to learn to be right handed because devils or something.
It is Bren :)
And were also well-known for being incredibly accurate with the original Brens having scope mounts
@@ln7929 Ive loved them since cod big red one but from then till now i have never seen one with a scope on it so that really cool to know thanks
📮
the sofia joke was about a previous arma mission where Cynanide was so happy to rescue a hostage named sofia only to find out it is a guy instead. think you did cover it before.
The top loaded magazine firearm at 22:07 is called a Bren Gun and it was the British equivalent to the American BAR light machinegun. The thing you were looking at was not the sight but the magazine release the sights are offset to the left side of the magazine.
22:14 Paul complains about a real-world Bren light machine gun from 1938 on how absurd it is makes me smile
23:58 actually knew a few people who served with Harry and by all accounts he was pretty grounded and level-headed, a good laugh away from combat and a genuinely dependable fellow in it. Completely batshit nowadays, mind you.
I think one of my favorite things in this entire video is Womble meeting the norwegian resistance, I showed the clip to my norwegian boyfriend who almost slammed his head into the desk when one of the resistance members shouts at one of the brits in Swedish, personally as a Swedish person I approve xD
As a Norwegian I sympathize with my fellow countryman. My Norwegian heart bled with each sentence spoken in Swedish
Somewhat unrelated. But there were some bagpipers during WW2. The most famous one is probably Jack Churchill who entered the war with a bagpipe, a Scottish broadsword, and a longbow. There are even unconfirmed reports that he actually got a kill with the longbow.
There’s another story about a Scottish man armed with only his knife and a bagpipe during the Normandy landing who played despite the British army restricting bagpipes because they would attract snipers and his response was basically that the restrictions only applied to English units but he is Scottish I can’t recall his name at the moment.
Did that scottish man with the pipes at Normandy survive?
@@themaxterz0169 yeah, just looked it up and piper bill died in 2010.
@@themaxterz0169 There were multiple bagpipers at the Normandy landings I believe. I'm pretty sure most of them survived the landings because the germans thought they were insane and refused to shoot them.
@@nicholaspawelski1031 Piper Bill Millin was the only one. He* was actually Canadian, born in a city two hours south of me. When Lord Lorvat ordered him to bring his Bagpipes, he cited the British War Office quote telling all Musicians to bring rifles, to which Lord Lorvat replied "Well, that's the English War Office. You and I are Scottish, so that doesn't apply"
Ahh yes, Mad Jack. What a god damn legend and a VEEEEERY good reason as to why you should never piss off a Scottish person. I got the scars and missing teeth to prove it too.
I think a lot of arma groups are on teamspeak since the radio mod they use requires it
Soviet Womble literally justs screams at a wall until it opens the door while Cyanide is trolling
Three might be pushing it but most europeans are typically bilingual. We learn english in school as part of basic education for one thing.
Usually we get to pick a third language in elementary school as well (for us here in sweden it was a choice between french, german or spanish).
Then there are some nations where they learn a neighbouring countrys' language as well for historical reason.
The finns learn swedish for instance because, well, we're neighbours (we think of eachother as sibling nations) and they used to be part of the swedish empire.
Finns living in sweden get the option to study finnish in elementary as well, I think. I had one finnish girl in my class that had a finnish tutor at school, anyway.
I mean, some people will be shit students but that's on them. The opportunity to learn is there and most people make use of it.
"Usually we get to pick a third language in elementary school as well (for us here in sweden it was a choice between french, german or spanish).
Then there are some nations where they learn a neighbouring countrys' language as well for historical reason."
Fucking hate this with a passion. we learn Icelandic, English and then Danish(historical reasons bullshit)
and then we are supposed to pick a "third" language. Then why the fuck were we FORCED to learn Danish then? we never use this shit.
@@zovisapphire I had something similar. I could choose between French, Italian or German in Middle School, then only German in High School. So I learned both French and German - both badly, because I had each of them for 3 years.
@@pirig-gal yeah, I'm Swedish and I studied French in high school (3 years) and I don't remember much. But I do get compliments on my English when I travel. Brits, Aussies and Kiwis all think I sound American, but Americans think I sound vagely "something else" 😆
15:15 When I told an old family friend (who was a retired Army CSM) that I was going to become an officer in the US Army, he asked me if I had any experience raising kids. Being in my teens, the answer was obvious, to which he responded, "you will by the time you get out." I thought that this was a joke and gave a chuckle. Fast forward some years, and as a PL, I now understand why he said that, and that he actually wasn't joking. Never in my life prior to commissioning did I ever think that I would need to feed, water, change, put down to sleep, and make sure that fully grown ass men (some older than me, and were in the Army when I was born) were not getting into trouble as if they were freaking three years old...
Oh, dude same! My superior just said "welcome to the worlds largest kindergarden". Took some time, but that was the best description ever.
Bit fun that at 31:20 you assumed they were being stupid americans who only know spanish and english, but "gratis" means "free" in Norwegian and Swedish too, those players were the ones yelling in Swedish at the ones stealing bikes earlier :)
And Danish too... Don't forget us ;_;
@@tysej4 Even if i discounted the fact that they were supposedly on the norwegian-swedish border, i would still forget the danes. I only respect languages that have consonants in them.
@@blaxxun9051 ah yes, the Danish are dumb meme. The only good joke left from before 2014.
@@Contade06 You guys.. I'm actually tearing up. I was tired of the whole "d*** measuring as a joke" contest, it is nice to see that some people do it with proper vitriol.
It means free in german as well.
22:08 It's a real gun, The magazine (or sights, can't remember which) are offset, so you actually look past the magazine.
Granted, it's still stupid as I assume it blocks a large portion of your vision.
It doesnt really matter that it blocks your vision as its primarily operated in twos. One guy shooting from the ground on its bipod, the other changing magazines and yelling at others to give him more magazines.
@@andrewshaw1571 It kinda still matters, though.
@@Jmvars the bren replaced overheating machine guns with feeding problems. it lasted till the First Gulf War. the sight was ofset to compensate for that fact and supposedly had scope variants. funny thing is, many prefered it to its replacement (FN MAG version L7A2) despite the feeding mechanism being on the side, due to weight and (again) reliability.
37:30 don't worry, Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is not (was it ever ?) copyrighted, as it was written in 1866. Really great composition, very compelling.
I don't think he cared enough about it to even want it to be.. probably wishes it be forgotten really.
The compositionis no longer under copyright. HOWEVER, the recording of the music being performed may be (depending on age).
22:07 the sights on actual Brens where offset to the left so you could aim, bren was actually a design inspired by a czech weapon called ZB Vz. 26
20:54 I believe that uniform is a British paratrooper
31:22 "gratis" actually means "free" as in "free stuff" in German, and apparently in Norwegian as well, who knew.
31:20 Gratis is norwegian meaning free. Probably comes from latin
Oh wow, Gratis is used by a lot of languages it seems, I remembering seeing it used in Germany, and in Indonesia
@@commanderpeanut8029 Norwegian is a germanic language. All nordic ones are except suomi.
Don't worry
The Hall of the Mountain King version sovietwomble used was from the UA-cam audio library
Playing bagpipes *badly* is torture to Scots.
22:18
The Machine gun you are talking about is called the Bren Gun. It was widely used by commonwealth militaries and was one of THE best light machine guns of the war. It was reliable in every theatre and damn accurate.
As for the sights, they are canted off center so you aren't looking through the magazine, rather looking beside the magazine. My Grandpa was assigned a Bren during ww2 and Korea, saved his bloody life.
I thought you put POWs infront of your spearmen and force them to fight as the first wave. Demoralizes the enemy, and helps preserve troop strength.
You don't have to deal with the geneva convention if you win
Most ARMA 3 MilSim communities use Teamspeak for the Task Force Arrowhead Radio plugin, which simulates radios within the ARMA 3 client while using Teamspeak for the audio coms.
When you hear the radio chatter with the distortion and squelching? Yea, that's TFR at work.
Fun Fact: during ww2 there were men who played bagpipes in battle…most famous is probably Mad Jack Churchill
The Bren machine gun is famous. I think the idea is that as it was supposed to be used from prone position it would be easier to load from the top without having to man handle the weight of the weapon to do it as it is a bit of a weighty beast. The sights are offset to compensate for this. It was also popular to fire from the hip in walking fire as you suppress and approach enemy positions because the weight helped to negate the recoil.
Sofia was a reference to a previous arma clip. What are those pistols in the wall behind you, they look nice.
Sophia Miacova. Cyanides forbidden fruit.
Clarkson got fired from the BBC for punching a producer because his food wasn’t to his standard at the hotel
The pause on the bagpipes bit followed by "Okay so torture-" really sent me
i think the mech at the end is probably based of front mission series mech rather than mechwarrior mech, because from what i remember all mechwarrior mechs can only walk
The night ops talk reminded me of something from On The Ground by John Stryker Meyer. A SOG team was observing NVA trail movements at night, when one of the Indigenous soldiers on the team had an NVA soldier tap him on the shoulder and tell him “Your turn for guard duty”. The NVA couldn’t tell that the guy he was talking to wasn’t a comrade, but an enemy, even though they were a foot apart!!
The pucker factor for that indigenous trooper at that moment is higher than incurring the wrath of the Top Sergeant for an American soldier or Marine!!
Reminds me of a (possibly) apocryphal story during the invasion of Crete in WWII where German and British paratroopers landed in a somewhat chaotic manner, and two soldiers met up and wordlessly began wandering around looking for the rest of their guys, until British Paratrooper #1 heard (what he thought was) "British Paratrooper #2" whisper "Hast du mein Schmeisser gesehen?"
22:18 the gun he is talking about is called the Bren, the magazine is actually placed off to the side so you can indeed see, furthermore it was fairly accurate even being able to be used by marksmen for "Long" range engagements
17:55 - Sofia certainly does not looks like a plain with sparse trees and shrubs.
Huge fan of Mark Hammond! 😂
you know what's funny I now can't remember his actual name...for fuck's sake RICHARD!
22:25 Knowing ZF, he didn't try to get the P.O.W. away from the combat zone, but rather, used it as a human shield like they did in a previous Arma 3 bullshattery episode
*hears bagpipes*
Paul - "So, torture"
Just in case anyone is wondering... The Giant Mech at 36:29 is from Gungriffon Blaze. Great game.
As a European even remotely interested in anything outside your own little country, you by default start with 2 languages: Your native one and English. (Minus the Brits obviously.) On top of that, it's pretty common to learn one of the other 3 big ones, being French, Spanish and German. (Not sure if eastern Europe still teaches Russian? I'm not too familiar with their school politics.) Add to that any kind of mixed heritage (be it nearby countries, former colonies, displaced populations, or post-WW2 immigrants), and people who are speaking 3-4 languages aren't too uncommon here.
Not as much as it used to be taught, but a lot of schools still offer the possibility to take on Russian as 2nd/3rd language.
Most eastern european languages are just Russian with a different name anyways, or close enough that the two languages could hold a conversation and never notice (I watched this happen once, only to witness how angry a Belarusian can become if you ask how they speak Russian so well)
James May's show about travelling across Japan and newest season he is in Italy, Clarkson having his own show as farmer. Meanwhile, Richard Hammond nowhere to be found.
Apparently he has show "Richard Hammond's Workshop" on Discovery+
My G... that was neither an Awesome nor Sun Spider, in fact... that was NOT a Mech from Battletech.
But I LOVE that you are a fan enough to name drop those 2 regardless!
37:30 In the Hall of the Mountain King is in the public domain, and nobody can copyright it. You're safe from that one.
29:14 The sights are on the side, it's just hard to see because of video quality. Lefties couldn't use it because of it tho.
Sofia is the capitol of Bolgaria, it's a large city so it wasn't the town in the video.
at 20:56, the uniform is that of the british airborne infantry, who wore different helmets and uniforms than regular brit infantry.
22:18 its called a BREN and is widely considered a very good gun the sights are off set to one side and the magazine is on top to ..well i dont know if its to but to help the assist gunner reload it
I think the answer at 22:18 about aiming through the mag of the Bren gun "what are you even aiming at" is "Everything in that general direction"
correction, top gear is hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, *Richard* Hammond and James May
Grand tour is actually still going on. I remember they did a special in Paris this or last year. Due to COVID, and because it was probably more popular, they moved to mostly specials
germens hearing the part about the beer . lets not brag about our alcohol problems on here yes ? xD
Speaking of BattleTech, can we expect to see your reaction to the Tex Talks BattleTech series?
Actually no the BREN had the sights to the side. So you would aim around the mag. But the mag was put on top to aid in feeding.
Bren guns have iron sights mounted to the left, not down the middle, so the mag doesn’t interrupt sight picture
10:28 its richard hammond. And the format of The Grand Tour change. they are now releasing what used to be specials.
22:17 the sight is not centered, it looks past left side of the magazine. it is real.
26:38 Yeah, having been learning Norwegian I saw that and started laughing lol Granted, I wasnt able to read all of it as all I could understand was "when is the next bullshit" and just figured out the rest from there lol
The reason they use Teamspeak on Arma 3 is because there's a mod known as Task Force Arrowhead, which transforms the in-game voice chat into a more realistic method of communication. Push to talk is replaced with constant voice activity, and you can only hear someone when you're close to them. It also adds in actual radio communication such as functional radio frequencies, long range radio bags. The mod requires Teamspeak to work, thus why the group still uses it.
3:40 yeah, but the forest is haunted by Cake and she's adorable
Moment I saw there was a new BS I was waiting for this
13:10 i imagine its the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property. you couldnt 100% prove they were using the mosque for military purposes, only to disengage from the fight.
if they chucked the gun out the window, and/or you could not find the weapons, you'd've broken international law.
19:00 i can knock 10 beers, but ill feel like i can knock 10 bears afterwards
then wake up outside on the sidewalk
22:31 “Mad Jack” Churchill has joined the battle
Sights on the Bren are to the left of the mag. You do not look through the mag lol
I can kinda guess why 2 soldiers down in a 9 man squad means you are no longer combat efficient. Since among the 7 survivors, at least 2 would be needed to carry the bodies(assuming you don't want to leave them behind). So then you are down to 5 people who are combat effective, and ready to go at any moment. That's almost half the squad suddenly.
Ah yes. In the Hall of the Mountain King, copyright claimed by Edvard Grieg who've been dead since 1907
22:07 if im not wrong, the gun sight isnt behind the mag, its actually on the side of the gun, at the height of where scoped should be
Yeah it's offset because of the magazine
at 37:00 ish the mech is from the Gungriffon series which is sadly basicly dead
10:27 It's Jeremy Clarkson, *Richard* (not Mark) Hammond, and James May.
The bren has the sight offset to the left of the mag.
i have to ask this just because but, what if after they ran into a mosque you just called in artillery and erased the building from existence?
36:38 Soooo would yoy know if the Geneva Convention states anything about whether one side has the right or not to use a newly-made technological development (in this case, an armed mech) in battle if the other side has nothing on that same level or possible access to said tech?
In short, would the U.N. punish us for 'unfair advantage' if we made a mech weapon and used it on our enemies without warning? Versus if we built an unarmed drone specialized for navigation/surveillance/search and rescue?
I don't think that terrorists organizations follow the Geneva suggestion. And imagine getting an POW, when it's an logistical nightmare when you can just execute the combatant.
In the Hall of the Mountain King is public domain, btw, so no need to worry about that
The composition is in public domain but depending on how/who it was played by plays a part on weather it's copyrighted or not, the one womble used was made by youtube audio and hence is free to use... apparently
Pretty sure no one holds the copyright on "In the Hall of the Mountain King", considering the original composer died 1907.
Then again, doesn't stop youtube spam bots.
*"WHERE. ARE THE SIDE. PLATES?!"*
I was in arma 3 op the other day, we where moving through mountain pass and we got ambushed. Now we didn't know where we fired from so we stuck behind this rock taking multiple casualties, including our company leader and 2 mraps. Enemies where fighting where no joke too, there the taliban so they had U.S. gear i.e. humvees, Blackhawks, m113 ect.
i remember seeing this bit of his video, and thinking 'Man, Quebec is always sick isn't he' 26:11
37:00 its so not news worthy that someone dies during briefing or in general pre mission start that i didnt even notice that it happened when i watched the video on soviets channel. lol
Telnyashka were different colors for different units, black = marine, red = spetsnaz, light blue =vdv
At 30:46 I was just waiting for a Norwegian to come running out of the forest blasting mayhem or darkthrone on teamspeak lmao
the gun with the mag sticking out of the top is an actuale gun and the sights are off set to the right
22:09
Thats a BREN gun
I think half a dozen was officially used up till the Gulf war
30 seconds in and he's talking about POWs, must be real fun at parties lol.
Fun fact. The word for German is nighter that og Deutsch. It's actually Tysk in Scandinavia. (Don't ask, it doesn't make sense to us either. 🤷🏼♂️)
The Russian Tanker crewmen in Arma are by default wearing that gear around 9 minutes when you were noting that, the default loadouts for some of the factions can be very weird sometimes.
13:20 i mean think on it on reverse, if some foreign power attacked a church in US i would doubt they wouldnt use that as the headline against said group. And if that group is there to secure oil and resources for their own country in name of ''freedom'' they will try not do shit like that.
I have a 1944 little pocket Russian-German dictionary for communicating with German POWs - "hands up", "move or I'll shoot", and many more useful German phrases written in Russian syllables. Apart from that, there are also pictures of German rank chevrons(?) and tank/plane silhouettes for ease of identification.
I really hope Soviet doesn't ever need sponsorship. His dark humor is so good and something I absolutely miss from a lot of channels I used to watch
"Gratis" is actually Norwegian and Swedish for the word free. Meaning free loot.
I started watching these guys one night about 6 years ago… a very low point in my life and was considering suicide. I watched these guys almost every night for about 6 months they genuinely helped me through that time in my life I found myself laughing at their bullshittery I got into gaming and found an amazing community and amazing people. Forever grateful for those guys… as a side note the US is the 2nd largest Spanish speaking country in the world at least it was around 2018
36:40 It's from an old game called Gungriffon
I believe the mech is actually from Gungriffon
31:35 Gratis means free in Afrikaans and most likely the same in Dutch I don't know what it means in Norwegian tho.
It means the same in norwegian, and the two other scandinavian languages
22:18 yeah it is an interesting desight and that is most probably a bren.
Yeaaah, mechs are fun and cool until one runs over your tiny human entity
I'm pretty sure the gun your complaining about at 22:20 is a British been gun, and is considered to be an amazing weapon. And btw the mag is slightly on the side so you can aim.
Not sure classical music can be copystriked. Considering the composer has been dead for quite a while...
Definitely gonna be good
Richard hammond not mark hammond. The new show is The grand tour
