For the college age MBT audience who have only had their parents do their laundry, have spent more money on cardboard than cleaning supplies, and can barely function as real human beings: Wash warm means the clothes can survive a warm wash cycle when it needs one, not that you should exclusively wash it on warm. Detergents are made to mix well even with cold water nowadays and most bacteria which dies at only 60°C isn't going to survive the detergent anyway. Also, use vinegar instead of fabric softener when washing towels and bedsheets to eliminate mildew and odor. It's not an every load thing as vinegar is corrosive and can be rough on certain parts of the washing machine but if you use it occasionally you don't need warm water for those loads and it also has the benefit of cleaning your washer. Just don't use vinegar and bleach in the same load. That'll cause a nasty chemical reaction which emits chlorine gas. And ALWAYS air dry if it's a nice piece of clothing and if time permits. If the fabric will stretch like wool use a drying rack (it's fine to just lay the clothing out on any clean, flat, waterproof surface but it will dry slower without proper air flow) , otherwise hang dry it. Dryers will always shrink and damage clothes. If you had a flu, covid, or anything else that's nasty and makes you shid pant consider washing your sheets, towels, and clothes on sanitize or with bleach. When using bleach to wash always use cold water as hot water will break bleach down and make it ineffective. And of course never mix bleach with any other chemical without making sure it's safe first and following instructions. Bleach is safe with the vast majority of detergents but always check. Besides that just wash with like colours and materials and you'll be fine.

Planned obsolescence is definitely a thing, but washing clothes is almost certainly not a case of that. Washing instructions are there for sanitation reasons while keeping the fabric in mind. That's why it's not just "use hot water" for everything, even though hot water is much better at killing bacteria than cold water.
Using only cold water sounds more like an energy saving tip, not a proper cleaning tip for all clothes.
If there's any actual washing advice to be had, it's that when using a dryer you shouldn't be using dryer sheets for things like towels. While they may make the towels fluffier, it can actually impair their ability to absorb water, so they don't function as well.

    • @GrieveIV

Also using only hot water for clothing can lead to like, shrinkage with certain fabrics. Which makes warm and cold just safer options if you aren’t sure which to go with.

drying clothes on heat ruins them and is absolutely planned obsolescence imo. i have no idea why you would be washing a sweater on hot; unless it's some really light colored 100% polyester non - pre shrunk sweater, i would be doing it on cold, preferably hand-washing. sweaters are delicate items and darker colors are subject to fading in warm water just like anything else.

    • @connorhamilton5707

@@erikreeds3836 That's not planned obsolescence, that's natural wear from not caring for your clothes. Nobody's saying to wash everything on with hot water, we're saying to follow the instructions that come with the clothes. If you follow the washing instructions on the clothes, that sort of thing won't happen.

@@connorhamilton5707 i wouldn't necessarily pin it on the clothing manufacturers (though i can't say for certain as most of my clothing is higher end and i've largely stopped checking wash tags for cheap basics thesedays) and they're probably /generally/ being truthful about what care is good for the clothes, but i would say appliance companies selling you the idea that you should be machine washing and machine drying 95% of your clothes is planned obsolescence, though admittedly it's planned obsolescence of something other than the appliances themselves.

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 9 місяців тому

@@erikreeds3836 That's not planned obsolescence. Planned obsolescence is making something with the intent of it only lasting a certain amount of time, to keep people buying more later on. Washers and dryers are not designed to cause that, and the people that sell them actually discourage people from washing things too often.
      Quote from Whirlpool's website:
"How often should you wash clothes you wear daily? Clothes like jeans, sweaters and jackets can be worn multiple times before they need to be washed again."
And then they list a recommended amount of uses for various types of clothes before washing them again. Underwear (other than bras in cooler weather), socks, and workout clothes, are the only pieces of clothing they recommend always washing after a single use. And it's pretty obvious why you would wash those often.

Ironically you actually don’t have to do it at all if you wash on cold, warm to hot water will make certain fabrics leech colour but cold really doesnt

Please wash your stuff at 40 degrees celsius or more if its not said otherwise on the clothes. It will kill some legionelles that live in cold water. Some fungus and similar stuff doesnt die otherwise its basic science. Or dry in the sun afterwards atleast.

Hold up, if you wash sheets warm because cold water doesn't kill fungi, WHY WOULD YOU WASH ANYTHING IN YOU WEAR IN COLD?!? If you can't handle your bed that you spend 6-9 hours a day in being infected by fungi, why the hell would you want the clothes you spend the other 15-18 hours a day in to be infected by fungi? If it does not reliably and safely keep you from having unwanted guests, then you're washing incorrectly. I don't care about the fabric, buy higher quality clothing that doesn't shrink. Clothes worth the money you paid for them will not shrink even if you wash in boiling water.
    Y'all are insane.

The part you’re missing is that if you hang your washing out to dry it’s a non issue, sunlight kills 100% of that shit, but if you’re too lazy to hang stuff out then warm water is safer

    • @dontmisunderstand6041

@@johnymousAnonymous If sunlight killed "100% of that shit", there'd be no point in washing at all, because it'd be impossible for "that shit" to exist on the surface of the earth.
