  • Hey whatsup guys OSG back with a Patreon request that has been months in the making. When 2000DC asked me to do a video on every c64 football game in order of greatness I stupidly underestimated 1 how many football games were on the c64 and 2 how many terrible football games there were.
When I say football (for any of my American viewers I mean soccer so don’t expect to see the likes of 4th n inches etc on this list
For this list I’ve ruled out Football Manager games because although I love them they aren’t really actual football action games as such and also would make really bad viewing…at least we can have a laugh at some of the bad games here as we watch them
So I was left with 42 games which if I had to be blunt only around 25% of this list is worth playing so I have had to think up of 30 ways of saying this is crap…which isn’t an easy task..
So enough talking about it and let’s get on with every C64 Football game in order of greatness
Please support me on Patreon and get perks like 2000DC did here with this Patreon request

Microprose was so good because it was made by Sensible Software. Their warm-up for Sensi Soccer on the Amiga.

Emlyn Hughes for me, the five directional control system was amazing. Microprose was very good, but nowhere near as complex and more arcadey, still a great game though (possibly the first football game to have replays?). Microprose Soccer was actually designed in part by John Hare of Sensible fame.
    P.S
I went on to become a football games designer for my sins. I worked at Silicon Dreams/Eidos and at Gremlin for those with memories lol. I designed the control system for UEFA Champions League 98/99 and 99/00 on PlayStation and designed the commentary system for those games. I also worked on a Premier League manager title and other non football based stuff for Sony and others.

@@oldstylegaming - Only ever tried to do justice to the kid I used to be, to not get it wrong for kids with mates in back badrooms. Of course everything is somewhat wrong, but you try and it's as true each gen, only the faces change. Corporate interests came in, in a big way in the 32bit era sadly, and those interests have only continued to dilute and stifle passion, still designers try and do their best.

I LOVED seeing MISL Soccer that high on the list! Living in Baltimore, the Baltimore Blast were a perennial MISL title contender, and it was great to have a game based on the league. Easily my most played game on the C64.
Also, Microprose Soccer here was known as Keith Van Eron Pro Soccer, Van Eron being the goalkeeper for the Baltimore Blast. The flip side of the disk had the indoor version of the game too! (And the Blast partially owned by Microprose owner "Wild" Bill Staley)

It's amazing how many of these games seem like re-skins of other titles. There seem to be half a dozen 'International Soccer' reskins with Emlyn Hughes/Peter Beardsley Soccer etc. Gary Linekers Hot Shot looks (and sounds and seems to play) like Italy 1990 by Ocean. I heard on a video about Ocean software that they reskinned a Euro '84 soccer game for their Mexico '86 title because the guy given the task of designing the game in house didn't get the memo and when asked how the game was coming along, a few weeks before the scheduled release said: "What game?" so they went out and bought somebody's Euro '84 game and rebadged it....

Been thinking of setting up another few leagues with modern clubs..........fantastic video BTW and Microprose Soccer is a worthy number one. Well it WAS done by Sensible Software.........What football games did they do after this, anyone know????

Italy 1990 was my favorite growing up. It was the only one I had that was actually playable. I had Match Day 2 (awful) and International Soccer on Cart. But Italy 1990 was my fav. You can score often from kicking off and running straight and then letting fly half way into the opponents half. Most times it'll sail into the net. You can also score often with a diagonal shot from just outside the far corner of the box. That or if you're good a dribbling, you can run round the goalie and run it over the line :)

Nice one another great video. The game I thought might be number 1 was your number 2 (won’t spoil!). The one I played the most as a kid was Italia 90, followed by Gary Lineker’s Hot Shot. There was quite a few here I’ve never heard of. That Codemasters street soccer one looked good to me and one of the other less congenital ones - forgot it now 😂
It’d be great if you could do a C64 football manager list too - that was the (sub) genre I played most and still have so many of them. Cheers

Nice compilation. I played most of this games, but enojed only Emeyn Hughes Soccer (I had original disk released by LK Avalon in Poland :)), International Soccer and of course Miscroprose Soccer. Last game was more known in my city as "Microsoccer" because it was the usual name on tape compilations - it was very popular in my class when I was going to school in eraly 90s :) I also spent much time with Manchaster United Europe, because it had a really unique (for C64) management segment and it was simulating many european cups. You could get a yellow/red card during a game, there was a referee runing on the filed... probably most complex footbal game on Commodore :)
OSG - please make a compilation about sports manager games :) There were quite a few, like Kenny Dalgish Footbal Manager or Soccer Rivals :)

And that's why it is the best game involving football to this day. Not necessarily the best football game, if you understand me: the two are different accolades. If the best game involving football in Kick Off 2, the best representation of football in a game might be Pro Evolution Soccer 6 or one of the later ones in recent years.

Bro... I loved it C64 days. I was 13 when I got my first ‘real’ set-up. Having evolved from ColecoVision - the sheer vastness of potential game options on C64 was like nothing else.
I remember buying ‘some’ games. Maybe 6-10 tops over so many years. I would’ve 200-300 different games tho. Most of em random; dumped on some disc with 4-5 other games and just playing everything once and mining for gold.
I’m glad that for all the games on your list, Let can only confirm absolutely having played 2 of the 40. Luckily they ranked #4 and #1.
I do have to concur 100%. The #1 game was mint. The mechanics of the ball/player movement; scrolling were so advanced versus anything to date.
I remember in particular; the movement you could put on your shots once you knew what you were doing meant you could basically set fire to the other 39 games the day this game out: 🐾🥰🙏🕺🤓

One other comment on my beloved MISL Soccer. As with SuperStar Soccer, you could play an exhibition with any team, but to play the league mode, you created an expansion team, with all low-end talent players.
You could train your team to improve them, create new players, or trade players (with a "transaction fee"). All of these took "ability points" (you started with 300, and depending on where you finished you earned more. (More points for a lower team, less for a higher team, designed to help improve the weak squads.)
However UNLIKE SuperStar Soccer, you didn't play all your games. Games that were against a Western Conference team were "road games" and simulated, so at the start, you'd expect to lose to San Diego or Tacoma 11-0!

Hi! Just an idea: Would you make a list of the best football manager games as well? I have not found such a list from you yet. One of my favorites is Match of the Day (it is not the same as Match day)! But there is a glitch in every uploaded emulated version. It freezes when I talk with the doctor in the game... As I could recall, I had no such problem with the original C64 version. Moreover, I have some additional ideas for C64 game lists.

I had & played the 4th Placer in this Vid! :D
Holy hell a lot of the low placers in this List look like they were made as an act of flat out Trolling. XD

Had lots of the games at the bottom of this list. Thought they were fun back in the day but I see they were anything but lol. The top 2 are interchangeable really as both were outstanding but I played more Emlyn Hughes as you could change the kits, team names and player names. Special shout to Peter Shiltons Handball Maradonna - spent hours on that fun game :)

I haven't had many soccer games, but i just love Microprose Soccer! Commodore/International Soccer and Five-A-Side were fun, too. And Street Sports Soccer was ok (Their basketball game was one of my most played games).
Super Soccer seems to be almost in slow motion, same with Match Day II (How can that game be THAT high on the list??). The ball in Street Cred Football is HUGE, bigger than the player's heads...Same in 4 Soccer Simulators, Gazza II, Italy 1990 and Microprose Soccer. Also in Fantastic Soccer, ADIDAS Championship Football, England Championship Special, Manchester United TOCG, Liverpool TCG and Kick off the ball is too big. European Football Champ has a slight bloom over it and is pretty choppy. Peter Shilton's Handball Maradonna also has that bloom. In Fighting Soccer everything except the ball is totally washed out. Why?? And it's even choppier than EFC. Roy of the Rovers has no goals?? World Cup Soccer: Italia 90 is also choppy. I play 3D Soccer's graphics were a BAD idea. Graeme Souness International Soccer is slightly choppy.
If the ball/player proportions are a little bit off, that's not bad for the playability. Washed out colours could be a problem for playability. A rather slow game pace doesn't have to be bad. Many/Most players don't have faces, but that's mainly because of the resolution (and perspective). Some games have the ball physics completely wrong, the surface played on must be pretty sticky... All these games with choppy graphics: Is it really the games or some emulator or recording problems?
So choppyness, too slow pace, bad physics and bloomy graphics ruin the games. Bad sfx and music aren't that important: just mute the sound. Playability is of course the most important thing, but that can't be judged just by watching a video.
I think i have to catch up on a good amount of Fußballspiele!
