I didn't get to play the full Turbocharge until the end of 2018, on the C64 mini, while my left hand was in a cast after thumb surgery, and loved it (I had only played the Commodore Format demo when I was a kid). And, the first game I played on my actual C64 (over 30 years ago), was Pitstop 2, so that game will always have a large place in my heart. Thank you for the list, awesome job!

Rally Speedway was SO cool when I was a kid. I spent hours just making my own tracks.
I loved this video, watched it all the way through. I have to agree, although I’m relatively new to the C64, during my midlife discovery, Stunt Car Racer is very impressive as is Grand Prix Circuit. Great work 👍🏻
No super or championship sprint Paul? Love those... Always remember Scalextric as well, had a great intro and wasn’t that bad in 2 player mode... Some great looking games I’ll try there though👍
ok, i'm really glad you put hot rod in there, but i would have had it higher, you did mention it, but i would have had supersprint in there, but no one can argue about stunt car racer
Hot Rod is a weird one...its really slow...but still fun, if it had been a bit faster id have had it higher...in game music is nice...graphics are awesome for a top down
I think the one that was missing for me was BMX SIMULATOR. Always loved that as a kid. You should check it out if you haven't played it. Other than that - great work!
Wow good call! I had BMX Simulator, one of Codemasters first games if I recall? Was great fun and two player as well. Also, does anyone remember Kickstart? Very retro but nostalgic thinking about it.
Great list and games! Good video and your commentary is spot on. Very grateful that C64 Stunt Car Racer was recently ported to A8bit. Rally Speedway is indeed great fun. Racing Destruction set is deeper and fun too but not as fast iirc nor as colorful unfortunately.
Wow man! There are some great hidden gems on the C64, Of course I loved Racing Destruction Set, Test Drive, Pitstop and my other favorite was Pole Position. I put many hours into that game when I was younger. I am going to check out the other ones I didn't know existed. I have had my C64 since new in the early 80's. And it still works like a champ today.
Good list. Lotus goes near the top for me and I'd maybe add Continental Circus and Cisco Heat (joke!). You might want to check out The Cycles if you haven't already. I feel it's clearly the best motorbike sim on the C64 although very similar to Grand Prix Circuit.
I didnt think the C64 was blessed with loads of quality racing games. I loved Racing Destruction Set as you could make your own tracks and then race round them and I thought Buggy Boy was great. Stunt Car Racer was good but it could have done with being a bit faster. Incredible to think it ran at all on the C64.
Really good video thanks!!! I would have had continental circus on the list as an arcade conversion to 8 bit it's really impressive, controls well, fair challenge and even attempts a bit of rain thrown in...plus the comedy pit stops 😆😆
Great list! Hot Rod looks like a really close conversion of the arcade game. Definitely need to try that! Surprised to not see Kikstart II on the list but I guess you might not call that a straightforward racing game. I'd also have considered Speed King and Formula 1 Simulator for the list I think, and the conversion of S.C.I. was decent.
Kickstart was in the list but I took it back out for the reason you say...it's a weird one though as I love the fam but I think is more a skill game but like atv etc

Stunt Car Racer could easily be mistaken for the Miggy version, incredible!!!
"videogames are bad because they don't reflect reality" my mother used to say when I was addicted to my C64. Now I play modern realistic games and she says: "videogames are dangerous because they look so real"
Nice compilation! (but Turbo Outrun to me wins, hands down :) PS: if you want to try something REALLY sick, run Stunt Car Racer in an emulator - then increase the speed
I bought recently C64 and Sd card reader (SD2IEC) for it. So i will for sure play in some of those games. Anyway i think you should reconsider to do a series like : TOP 20 2 players games for .......... C64/Amiga and so on. It would be really helpfull. Great content like always.
Ill put that on the list, i did do a best multiplayer series before i had channel Armageddon and deleted 312 vids... ill redo cos that is something i sometimes search for to play games with my son...good shout
Ahh such nostalgia. I recall buying Stunt Car Racer on a whim. I had some birthday money to spend on a game, and I'd not even heard of this game before, just saw it in the shops and purchased it. C64 gaming could be a lottery and it was risky to just buy from the packaging alone. But I took the risk and was rewarded with the most amazing game that pushed the C64 to it's limits, delivering playability and graphics that could only be dreamed of on the system. Later when I upgraded to Amiga I had countless hours of fun with STR on that system too. I would have I included Outrun on the list - it was better than many gave it credit for, was fast and playable. The major disappointment for me was the lack of forks in the road, which was one of the most fun parts of the arcade game, being able to choose your route. I remember being so disappointed that the C64 version simply did not have them for whatever reason. It was much better than the lame Amiga attempt though!
I love racing games in general, and on C64 as well. Read about Rally Speedway few years ago, and I immediately recognized Micro Machines concept (and that is one of my favorites). RS is amazing, having 2 player simultaneous play + track construction kit! Graphics is not essential, but then again - I wonder if this little game can be nice for modding, changing the graphics to some cool and varied char tiles? Nobody tried, but it might happen in the future. And it sure may be used as a mold (game engine) for some new games written from scratch! This IS MMachines for C64 (dual play!) I love futuristic racing, and one interesting game is FURY done by Martech! Has cool music and aura in the intro control screens, and racing seems basic and simple, but is about weapons and equipment, and money collected by racing... usual tropes in extreme racers that came IN THE NEXT DECADE! Important game, but not accepted well. Check it. Pit Stop 2 is awesome, best for me. Power Drift made my jaw drop when I played it first time. And Super Cycle looks incredible, but probably needed some good tweaking in gameplay area - some part II would've made it the greatest, but it never happened. Game engine is fabulous, so smooth, nice looking and fast! I don't dare asking for 2-player option, that would be out of this 8-bit world.
yeah Night Racer nearly made it on the list, i played it a few times...it was one of the ones jostling about around the 20th place...but then TD2 took it for nostalgia reasons
@@RetroRelixRestorer I look though loads of clips cross matched with lemon 64 then get 50 games (if possible) then play them and whittle it down to 20 mate :-)
It will be high up on the Amiga list mate thats for sure...but i never thought the C64 quite managed to pull off the sense of speed in that game...graphics wise it was special...but the sense of speed is all important in that type of view racer
I think Speed King should have made the list rather than Super Cycle. I played a lot of Super Cycle back in the day and enjoyed it at the time, but the way it throws you violently to the sides on every corner is so frustrating. And the only way to tell what corner was coming up was the centre line having one pixel switch sides as it mirrored the graphics was annoying. Apart from that, a great list!
There are so many 2D top down racers in this list. I do think Larry Bundy Jr was thinking about 3D racers when he asked Old Style Gaming to make this video (list). Would Chase HQ and Wec Le Mans make it to that list?
Chase HQ and Wec Lamans are not only two of the worst games on the c64 but also two of the worst racing games in any system so no they would never make it into this list in a million years....I'd out Larry's suggestion of toobin on before them lol
wasn't especially great but used to spend hours on talladega. Proper rage inducer when the muppet ai orange demon car glances a pixel near you and makes you explode 27 laps into a 30 lap race
Turbo charge reminds me of the driving sections from Vendetta. That's a game I'd like to play again, can anyone point me in the direction of a good emulator/roms?
It wouldn't surprise me if Vendetta influenced Turbo Charge, but the former was by Stanley Schembri, whereas the latter was a Chris Butler joint, and he also wrote the excellent Power Drift.
Out of the 7 games, only 3 attempted to draw hills. Now, it certainly IS a problem sinc the coder has to pick chars out of the charset to produce hill but for some reason, I thought more had attempted it. I was actually offered a job in London to convert Trans--am to the NES and I intended to produce hills in the same manner as the few examples above but then I got an interview with Core Design and stayed there. The people in London were really pissed off because even though no contract or even handshake had taken place, they had PRESUMED I would work for them and had got money out of the publishers because they claimed to have a 'top notch C64 coder on the job'. I'm NOT tip top and I did not like their attitude or working in London..... So I wrote Thunderhawk instead.
To have test drive 2 at 20th place is testiment to just how good the c=64 racers were. On a separate note, to have over 7,000 views within a month of releasing this video is testament to just how suprisingly popular the c=64 still is. Lastly to use the word testament twice in a 3 sentence post is testament to how much I love the word and testament to how much I try to sound smart 🤭
Is Kikstart II not considered a racing game? I know its not a traditional one but you are racing & its better than all these 20 combined. Great vid tho
The great american cross country road race was amazing, super cycle was amazing, racing destruction you could build your own track and pick your own cars too. Grand prix circuit was amazing it should have been higher, the day i got buggy boy i played it for 8 hours straight. pitstop was great where you had to change your own tyre's etc. great list, just dont fully agree with no 1
There was also Formula 1 Simulator by Mastertronic, a very forgettable no frills racing game with below average graphics not a great deal better than Pole Position on the Atari 2600, but it was arguably still worth £1.99 because of the awesome Rob Hubbard soundtrack.
I had kickstart 2 in the shortlist...and it would have been pretty high on the list but then I decided it was more of a skill race game ...so it never made it...I love that game though
revs only 17 on the list that's made me sad and disappointed, revs was my fav especially after i won on professional level, though i only managed it the once, , but respect on the other top games racing destruction set and Stunt car racer.......just my opinion but RDS for me certainly deserves some kind of remaster or sequel because there is nothing like that now.......somebodies definately missed a trick here.....thx 4 the memories anyway despite placing revs so low......btw both revs and stunt car racer ..were created by the same programmer, the ledge Geoff Crammond
What no Derby Dash? This list is all wrong! 😁😁 You did hit the nail on the head by saying sometimes it's the game play and not the graphics, (no not Derby dash) supersprint on the old speccy was awesome especially in multiplayer 👍

No super or championship sprint Paul? Love those...
Always remember Scalextric as well, had a great intro and wasn’t that bad in 2 player mode...
Some great looking games I’ll try there though👍
Yeah I'm not that keen on super Sprint on this tbh I think Indy heat it far better ...I had scalextric too
Thanks for reminding me about Rally Speedway. I played that so much as a kid.
Great game
ok, i'm really glad you put hot rod in there, but i would have had it higher, you did mention it, but i would have had supersprint in there, but no one can argue about stunt car racer
Hot Rod is a weird one...its really slow...but still fun, if it had been a bit faster id have had it higher...in game music is nice...graphics are awesome for a top down
Super sprint. The very first c64 game I had.
Stunt Car Racer was superb on every single format, including the Spectrum!
it was mate
That's cos they were built to last
@@oldstylegaming For sure man! It really was my first gaming system. lol
Another great video 👍
Thanks mate...and thanks for watching it means a lot to me
Mate its even good on the spectrum
The only thing that annoyed me about stunt car racer was that bloody damage bar
the damage bar is ok as long as you are gentle
Really good video thanks!!! I would have had continental circus on the list as an arcade conversion to 8 bit it's really impressive, controls well, fair challenge and even attempts a bit of rain thrown in...plus the comedy pit stops 😆😆
Lol
Lol
I love that you can tell that’s a Porsche on Test Drive
I have so much nostalgic love for Street Rod. 👍🏻
"Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road" is very similar looking to "Skidmarks" on the Amiga
Nice racer was a classic for how smooth the framerate was. You should give it a look! x
Nice compilation! (but Turbo Outrun to me wins, hands down :)
PS: if you want to try something REALLY sick, run Stunt Car Racer in an emulator - then increase the speed
To be honest, I don't think Chris Butler really made a bad game on the C64. He was pretty much to the C64 what Joffa Smith was to the Speccy.
Pitstop 2 : THE GAME
Speedking was my personal favorite, a MotoGP game. Although Stunt Car Racer and Kickstart 2 were also fun.
The US version was better I thought
Remember the Cross country road race loved Turbo Outrun the music was awesome and Power drift brilliant it was and Buggy Boy great fun
This IS MMachines for C64 (dual play!)
I love futuristic racing, and one interesting game is FURY done by Martech!
I know no.13 under the name ‘Ironman’s Speed Shop’. Fun game!
Really good, Stunt Car Racer had to be first; but what about Mastertronic’s Night Racer - thought it was really quite good 👍
yeah Night Racer nearly made it on the list, i played it a few times...it was one of the ones jostling about around the 20th place...but then TD2 took it for nostalgia reasons
old style gaming Glad you at least considered it then 👍
@@RetroRelixRestorer I look though loads of clips cross matched with lemon 64 then get 50 games (if possible) then play them and whittle it down to 20 mate :-)
No love for Championship Sprint or BMX Simulator? Championship Sprint had a track editor too which blew my mind back in the day.
Bloody brilliant!
:-)
Never owned power drift but always hammered it at my mates house till his brother got home. Cant believe lotus turbo challenge isn't on the list
It will be high up on the Amiga list mate thats for sure...but i never thought the C64 quite managed to pull off the sense of speed in that game...graphics wise it was special...but the sense of speed is all important in that type of view racer
@@oldstylegaming best game on the amiga in my eyes
maybe mate...but SCR was also great on there...we all know they will be 1st and 2nd place lol
Thank God Stunt Car Racer is No 1, it’s my favourite most played C64 game of all time 👍🏻. Would’ve personally put Power Drift at No 2 however lol.
I think it's hard to narrow down a top 3. There were some quality racers on the c64. And just quality games in general.
yeah everyone will have a different order or will have some favourites that ive had to leave out...just shows what an Awesome machine the C64 was/is
I think Speed King should have made the list rather than Super Cycle.
Ivan Stewart is so fun in the arcade!
No Shirley Muldowney Top Fuel Dragster???
sorry no, i have played it though but found it a little repetitive....i know its a drag sim but should have had a bit more depth
@@oldstylegaming True enough. I knew the woman and she had no say in the development.
No super sprint? Loved that game! Good choice for number 1
There it is👍😁
Sorry man :-( just wanted it to be right
Sorry, no offense ment. thats good! Always delighted when I see new osg content👍 Pitstop II would be my alltime favorite. Great list, thanks!
Scalextric was good. Like pitstop ii but you could design your own tracks.
There are so many 2D top down racers in this list. I do think Larry Bundy Jr was thinking about 3D racers when he asked Old Style Gaming to make this video (list). Would Chase HQ and Wec Le Mans make it to that list?
Erm.... Well I talked to Larry extensively when doing this list so he did ... He even wanted to include toobin ffs
Chase HQ and Wec Lamans are not only two of the worst games on the c64 but also two of the worst racing games in any system so no they would never make it into this list in a million years....I'd out Larry's suggestion of toobin on before them lol
Street Rod, starring RedLetterMedia's Rich Evans.
wasn't especially great but used to spend hours on talladega. Proper rage inducer when the muppet ai orange demon car glances a pixel near you and makes you explode 27 laps into a 30 lap race
Lol
Ha yeh. I hated that game but it kept pulling me back in with the thought of finishing a rsce
I really like that thing. I thought I was the only one remembering it. Not a looker, but quite addictive.
Turbo charge reminds me of the driving sections from Vendetta. That's a game I'd like to play again, can anyone point me in the direction of a good emulator/roms?
Send me an email and I'll sort you out Pagman35@gmail.com
It wouldn't surprise me if Vendetta influenced Turbo Charge, but the former was by Stanley Schembri, whereas the latter was a Chris Butler joint, and he also wrote the excellent Power Drift.
I used to enjoy Night racer from master tronic - I think it was a £2.99? Budget game but it was not bad at all.
Thunder hawk by atlantis?
@@oldstylegaming ua-cam.com/video/VMWZO9DNEMA/v-deo.html
Imagine if the Super Cycle team had handled the Sega arcade racer ports....
Lol
Revs is very good and stay up in this list not only number 15...
I was a 464 head when I was younger but fair play and a tipped hat to the 64 because these games are really good👍but where's Bumpin Buggies 😁
Do you watch Xyphoe? hes a 464 streamer and hes class ...you should defo check him out if you havent already
Is Kikstart II not considered a racing game? I know its not a traditional one but you are racing & its better than all these 20 combined. Great vid tho
The great american cross country road race was amazing, super cycle was amazing, racing destruction you could build your own track and pick your own cars too. Grand prix circuit was amazing it should have been higher, the day i got buggy boy i played it for 8 hours straight. pitstop was great where you had to change your own tyre's etc. great list, just dont fully agree with no 1
What you don't think stunt car racer is good?
@@oldstylegaming it's good but i think you could have swapped no 2 and no 1
Stunt car racer was smooth. But didn't it lack gameplay??
Powedrift wirh the old guy in the cart
Pitstop 2; plaed alot with my brother
thank you so much
You completely forgot about "Led Storm"
One of the best.
There was also Formula 1 Simulator by Mastertronic, a very forgettable no frills racing game with below average graphics not a great deal better than Pole Position on the Atari 2600, but it was arguably still worth £1.99 because of the awesome Rob Hubbard soundtrack.
Code masters super rally cross was great fun
Only one I miss is Super Sprint.
Night racer??
Kickstart2??!!! Stuntcar racer was Geoff Crammond too.
I had kickstart 2 in the shortlist...and it would have been pretty high on the list but then I decided it was more of a skill race game ...so it never made it...I love that game though
Where is Pole Position?
Try Speed King
Are there more people whom loaded Turbo Outrun just to listen to the awesome intromusic?
I do that with loads of game, Turbo Outrun intro music was on another level though
Robocop was a favourite of mine for intro music
revs only 17 on the list that's made me sad and disappointed, revs was my fav especially after i won on professional level, though i only managed it the once, , but respect on the other top games racing destruction set and Stunt car racer.......just my opinion but RDS for me certainly deserves some kind of remaster or sequel because there is nothing like that now.......somebodies definately missed a trick here.....thx 4 the memories anyway despite placing revs so low......btw both revs and stunt car racer ..were created by the same programmer, the ledge Geoff Crammond
What no Derby Dash? This list is all wrong! 😁😁
You did hit the nail on the head by saying sometimes it's the game play and not the graphics, (no not Derby dash) supersprint on the old speccy was awesome especially in multiplayer 👍
yeah gameplay is defo king when it comes to racing games...still to this day one of my favourite racing games is Road Race on Vic20...google it and watch a video...you will think wtf thats crap...but play it and master it and its class
Super Sprint is awesome game on NES but sadly not so good on ZX Spectrum. On Spectrum Badlands is much better game to play and has all the annoying things from Super Sprint fixed.
@@timoheinonen9570 Yes badlands rings a bell - going to remind myself of that also, cheers Timo 👍
