Okay so how about, like they said, replacing an entire server room with DNA? One file making millions of corrupt copies of itself could indiscriminately overwrite the rest of the files hypothetically.

I see a lot of hate for Nick, but I actually think he is awesome. He even keeps track of Linus' rants, and keeps the conversation on track. I don't even know how he keeps track of it all.
Even though it was strange for Linus to publicly decline a licensing opportunity, it was the right business decision. Here's why the WAN show is working, IMHO, and this also applies to all videos under Linus Media Group. Short answer-HARD WORK. Long answer, slow growth is not an indication of a unique business model that is worthy of franchising or that has any measurable guarantee of success. It simply shows that the business model is not broken and that the people behind it's growth are continually producing results. Having said that, there's always room to improve. Why their business model is “not broken”, all comes down to this. 1, they've successfully tailored their format to hold the attention of their target demographic. 2, their target demographic aligns with their sponsors expectations. 5, They never stop experimenting and trying new things, and when something worked, they ran with it, and kept running. 3, they use every tool consistently. Listen to their intros/outros and sponsor spots to see what I mean. 4, they are committed.
Please do the video on in-car infotainment systems done right! All the manufacturer versions are frustratingly terrible. Why is there not just an Android tablet shoved in my dashboard at this point?
Curse is still is a mod platform for wow.... Curse was out before discord, curse voice includes the voice app and mod platform in 1, Twitch now owns curse so they are rebranding an already existing platform. Honestly you couldn't have been any less informed about this software lol
I feel Google lost touch a while ago, they cut and drop products so quickly - it is really hard to get committed to any Google product now when it disappears a few months later. It is really hard to get everyone on the same platform for communications, let alone having the 'let me explain what this app is' discussion every week.
You got my upvote for the Google Hangouts rant. They keep killing/rebranding/fragmenting useful services. Compatibility and integration between their services and products is increasingly difficult and their community support features (Map Maker etc.) have been neutered. Their increasingly bizarre product decisions and the Alphabet reorganization leave me with the uncomfortable feeling that Google is now being run by bean counters and not the benevolent nerds anymore.
Curse app is really helpful for modding Minecraft because instead of having to go and install Forge (the core of modded minecraft) find the .jar, check compatibility with which minecraft version you are running, creating a separate instance of Minecraft and then manually dragging the mods into the mod folder, Curse is just literally semi-automatically create a new instance (forge automatically installed), select mods (compatibility checked for you) and click play.
*puts a clickbait title and thumbnail on Windows 9 video* *proceeds to complain that people didn't look past the clickbait title and thumbnail* You're going to have to make a choice in what sort of audiences and first reactions you attract. 300 gallons of shit ain't gonna smell like a rose garden, but it'll probably make them grow faster. It's up to you if it's worth the smell.
Actually, that much crap on a rose garden that is too small will burn off the plants. I know. I grew up on a farm and learned all about how to calculate the pros and cons of manure spreading.
Here is a comment in that video about the sleep bug: "This is happening with my intel 6700k after sleep, as well. Pretty sure its normal, you gotta wait for at least a minute or two for all the sensors to reset and stabilize their readings, and then check in gpu-z or aida64." So, you Linus are aiming AMD when it´s a Windows bug, and it affects Intel too... This is not an AMD sleep BUG, it´s a Windows sleep bug ._.
I love how Nick has this look on his face like, "you started this shit on your on. Are you happy now? Thank you so very much, I get to go home with this."
A game where players hold the ball with both of their hands 99% time and use one foot on the ball 1% of time, only americans could call it "foot"ball since it seems like to me americans have whole thing backwards...
You kick with the foot, not the leg. Sure, your leg is involved in the kicking process, but the part of your body you actually want to hit the ball with when you kick IS your foot, not your leg.
I am 100% with Linus on every single point when he goes off on his tirade around an hour or so in. Like, c'mon. They're splitting up Hangouts into separate apps? Are you fucking kidding me? Discord, PLEASE offer video, and then we'll never have to deal with this bullshit.
actually it is originally called association football. also my argument to people who call it soccer and call the other one called football (aka rugby/arl/afl/gridiron) "the game you call football. where is the ball for over 60% of the game and when it isn't there what is the main thing used to pass the ball?"
it was originally a mod sharinng platform. that finally grew to sharing minecraft mod packs as well. then they added chat. got that working to the point of being like discord. basically steam is where you go to buy games. amazon wants to be where you go to play games.
@King V I use it for installing mod packs that requires it. Then i move them to multimc. where i keep all my instances from the different launchers. (that or the vanilla launcher). I don't really use it other then that. It is capable of a lot. Just nothing i need.
"AMD is smart enough to fix the bug" - Is also what people said about the still unfixed cursor-bug that AMD GPU's have been causing since back in the ATI era...
Giving giant companies the benefit of the doubt that they'll do the "smart thing" gets you burned almost every time. It's an asinine thing to blindly believe in. Even rocket scientists are human beings capable of brain farts, oversight, arrogance and missteps, and trust me most people running these companies (actually making the decisions) aren't half as smart as your average rocket scientist either. They might have smart engineers working for the company, but it's the executives, intelligent or not, that make the calls whether stuff like this even gets touched in the first to place to begin getting fixed.
I went to AMD from a GTX560 that halfed it's clockspeed randomly due to driver issues. I bought a 7870 and never looked back. My next PC had a 7950 which I upgraded to an RX480. I used a lot of different drivers, Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and now 10. I literally had to google "cursor-bug" because I've never seen it.
And on google you've found articles ranging from yesterday all the way back to 2006 for every single AMD card that has ever existed. If you'd go back even before AMD's aquisition of ATI, you'll find that ATI cards were suffering from the cursor corruption even further back in time. Just the fact that a bug which is simply gamebreaking as it corrupts the shape of your cursor, making accurate clicks impossible, has been able to survive for over a decade, affecting every consumer grade GPU AMD has ever made, regardless of you having been affected or not, should be enough to never trust AMD again.
I have it on my Sapphire RX 470 Nitro. It happens rarely but it does happen, probably due to card driver sleeping, amd does have some ancient parts in its drivers. In all fairness it goes away with eyefinity toggle (dual monitors) or a restart.
I don't think that Linus or anyone preparing this stream did any research on what Curse provides on their site (regarding Mods) or what the current Curse Client does (chat, social, mod updates, Guild Sync, voice chat, and Minecraft multiple version support.)
Xbox Game Pass is not game streaming. Xbox Game Pass is not cloud gaming. Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service to download entire games to the console just like Xbox Games with Gold and PlayStation Plus and play them on the Xbox One as long as the subscription is active. No Internet connection is required after the game is downloaded (except for multiplayer games obviously).
Guys, Can you create a video for best laptop to buy in 2017. I am not talking about any gaming laptop. And please don't promote your favorite Razer. This guys don't even ship to all around the world.
Wholy hell your name is rak shit. That is an amazingly terrible name. Rak is an enemy in boarderlands, and you are its shit. Amazing name, keep up the good work my dude!
Hold on a second, don't completely dismiss curse. Curse is (for a lot of people at least) primarily a platform for modded minecraft, after WoW. There were multiple launchers before Curse (atlauncher, feed the beast, technic/tekkit) and basically everyone moved to Curse for its much better support for modpacks. Curse was (and still is) extremely important to the minecraft community. Also, modded minecraft launcher creators like the feed the beast team are actually scrapping their own launchers themselves for Curse (now twitch). Also I hate how it's called twitch now. It just pisses me off. It's not twitch. It's CURSE. And CurseVoice is basically useless, no one uses it. But curse as a platform is still something worth considering. It's basically steam for modded minecraft.
There's a large group of Curse users that don't care a bit about anything Twitch related. They use the voice chat (since it's there) but they installed it because the biggest developers of quality modpacks for Minecraft are using it for distribution. The FTB (FeedTheBeast) launcher is still a thing and still technically works, but the focus is shifting to Curse releases.
@ 1:04:44 activate "power saving" it will limit the background Apps, it may delay incoming messages. But it also hinders those spy Apps which drain your battery
Linus Media Group really did grow fast from a "unboxing on the parkplace" channel to one where i don't even know how much staff there is. Would be nice to have a LTT/LMG staff video!
Curse is still a mod platform for various pc games, including WoW. Having UI overlays and other important things in the background doesn't take up much memory nowadays which has little impact on the game. It brings a lot of customization and makes the games easier to play overall, saving time for real life things. Removing the mods will only make things take longer in games that are trivial irritating gamers everywhere.
First there was Ventrillo, then TeamSpeak, then Mumble, then Curse Chat which brought modern UI and social features to voice chatting.. But Then came Discord and crushed Curse with more reliable servers, better features, etc. Other than Curse being a voice chat app with Messaging features, it also serves as an Addon manager for a few games, World of Warcraft being the major/common one still to this date. Keeps Addons organized and updated, and provides a place for addon creators to upload, and manage their addons with comment sections, ratings, etc.. Also to note, the WoW Addon Manager version of Curse is separate from the normal Voice Chat app. Both available from the Curse Website. So if you only download the normal voice chat version, then you'll be easily unaware that Curse is still the primary WoW mod manager.
I remember when Linus was having to tell Luke to "look at the camera, because those are our viewers." When they used Razer Comms to bring in "callers" and they had that tacky product box background.
Lol, you know I've never seen much of nick lite and I've only recently gotten into WAN show, but I'm surprised at how informed and well versed Mr.Nick Lite is x)
Thank you, Linus. You just listed ALL of my major complaints about Android. Maybe Google will finally take notice. :P @Nicklmg: Amazon's convergence is definitely better than Google's constant decomposition, but there needs to be a balance between the two. As of KitKat it wasn't too bad, but it's gotten far worse with Jellybeand and beyond, IMO. *Google needs to stop playing copycat and actually be **_innovative_** like they USED to be.*
+LinusTechTips you can set up Hangouts as a desktop app. It's technically not but it is, it's the way Google does desktop apps. When you install the Hangouts app for Chrome it installs a shortcut to the Start Menu and now Hangouts will launch as a standalone app outside of Chrome. Google have a similar version of a few of their apps, Keep being another.
I like the changes taking place in the "Tech Tube" market. Everyone is becoming more thorough and looks more professional while still having a fun characteristic
55:00 The R7 1700 Stock cooler actually doesn't use that mounting post, you unscrew those plastic brackets then put the threaded heatsink in. It's only the very low end coolers that use those. Those screw holes look like they might be mount for shorter M.2 or wireless cards in that slot.
We come to watch the WAN show for it's casual off-the-cuff laughs combined with tech news. The vibe gives off that fun old school close friend who can crack jokes and immaturity as a contrast to our "serious Politically correct" lives.
I freaking love this show.Linus and Luke are the best, but I like having some of the other guys rotated in too.If for no other reason than just to stay in touch with some of the other guys.I feel like I know them for some reason.
The thing about the Ryzen's cooler mountings not being backwards compatible are most likely because the chip surface requires perfectly flat contact with the cooler itself instead of a concave design (they are making it hard for you to break your cpu).
Like when I had over 25k plays on myspace for my music and suddenly everything moved to facebook... You just captured a huge frustration from my past... i did custom layouts and used it as a promotion outlet, but Facebook made that so much harder
What happens when all our data is saved on DNA and our hard drive gets cancer?
Jason Updegraff infinite backups
Not sure you know how cancer works, but your hard drive getting cancer would most likely give you a lot of copies of the data.
It would give you several corrupted copies.

Would cancer=fragmentation?

the unplanned spontaneous show y'all put on is great
Lol, you know I've never seen much of nick lite and I've only recently gotten into WAN show, but I'm surprised at how informed and well versed Mr.Nick Lite is x)

Thank you, Linus. You just listed ALL of my major complaints about Android. Maybe Google will finally take notice. :P
@Nicklmg: Amazon's convergence is definitely better than Google's constant decomposition, but there needs to be a balance between the two. As of KitKat it wasn't too bad, but it's gotten far worse with Jellybeand and beyond, IMO. *Google needs to stop playing copycat and actually be **_innovative_** like they USED to be.*
This is a awesome wan show this week, really nice work guys :D
Nick is a cool guy! I enjoy him being on the WAN show!
The Hangout rant was so perfect. As someone who got all their friends on it bc it's so seamless, I resonate with your anger.....also Allo is shit
...and snow... don't forget the snow Linus. We have snow too.
The WAN show filled in the void that Diggnation left when Kevin stopped making it.
give the man a raise. he's so much better than giggling Luke and know-it-all Jon.
At least Nick doesn't humiliate children on stage
I just discovered than the WANSHOW voucher works on the european site for ifixit. thanks guys!
Romain Dubois i just ordered a pro toolkit
Curse was made as an alternative to TeamSpeak 3, at least we viewed it like that in CS community. And there was no reason to move away from TS3...
"What happened to you? You used to be cool"
This almost killed me XD
Linus, Nicky V and Dennis should all do a WAN show together
Phase 1: Collect topics
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: LAN Show
We come to watch the WAN show for it's casual off-the-cuff laughs combined with tech news.
Linus' rant about all-in-one apps? Preach.
Like when I had over 25k plays on myspace for my music and suddenly everything moved to facebook... You just captured a huge frustration from my past... i did custom layouts and used it as a promotion outlet, but Facebook made that so much harder
I want to see Linus do a WAN show ad for Fleshlight.
Man, at 32:30 to 32:52 is the best part. "I wouldn't tell you to eat it if their wasn't any food!"
