I'll never forget the first time I was introduced to Mortal Kombat. It was during the Fall of 1993, and I was outside playing with a friend of mine, Ronnie - when suddenly he asked if I wanted to play some Sega. Of course, owning a Genesis myself, I was like "let's go!". We go into his house, and I start looking through his vast library of Genesis games. He says to me, "You ever play 'Mortal Kombat'?" I say, "Never heard of it. How do you play it?" "You just pick a character, and fight each other." "Cool!"
Ronnie pops the game into the Genesis, and fires it up. I didn't even notice, since I knew NOTHING about the game, that he had activated the Blood Code before we started playing. (I found out about ABACABB shortly after). We start playing. Very first character I ever picked was Scorpion. Ronnie picked Sub-Zero. The fight starts - and naturally, I get my ass handed to me immediately, lol. The first thing I noticed right away about this game, was something I had never really seen (as excessively) in a video game before....BLOOD! With every uppercut, roundhouse kick, punch to the face...just showers of blood! At this point, I was pretty much sold on this game. After the immense ass-beating that was administered to me, those two famous words came up on the screen, in bright red and yellow flashing letters..."FINISH HIM!!"...and THAT'S when I witnessed the most insane, brutal thing, my 8-year-old eyes had ever seen...Ronnie entered a few button commands, the screen went dark, and I watched as Sub-Zero ripped my head off, and casually held it up, with the spine still in tact. I swear my eyes grew to the size of dinner plates. At that very moment, my ONLY MISSION in life, was to obtain my own copy of Mortal Kombat. I finally got my own copy for my birthday. The thing is, it was only because I convinced my parents that there was no blood in the Genesis version of the game....but I never mentioned the Blood Code ;)
At this point, MKII had just recently hit arcades, but I knew nothing about it. Until about 2 months later. I remember walking into the arcade inside my local mall (Golden Ring Mall, in Rosedale, MD - which no longer exists), with my mom and younger brother...and I noticed a group of about 5 or 6 people crowded around this one arcade machine. I start to walk over, and I look up and notice the lit-up marquee at the top of the cabinet..."MORTAL KOMBAT 2?????" I freak out, lol. I remember managing to get a good vantage point of the screen, noticing the character select screen, and thinking "Whoa!! Look at all the characters!!" Apparently, for me, going from 7 characters in the first game, to 12 in the sequel, was a "huge leap", LOL. I never got to actually play it that day (that came a few weeks later, when I started my bowling league, and noticed they had added an MKII cabinet in the arcade area!) - but I just remember thinking, as I watched that group of older kids playing it, that it was like they had taken the first game, and injected steroids into it - in every aspect. It was more colorful, larger sprites, higher quality sound, more blood, more finishing moves...I was in love, lol. I finally got to play MKII a few weeks later, as I mentioned earlier, at my local bowling alley, and it was once of the greatest moments of my childhood...maybe my life...even now, at 33-years-old, haha. By then, I was officially a Mortal Kombat FREAK...and the rest is history. I could go on and on - like when I first saw a preview of the un-masked Sub-Zero in Toys R Us, for the upcoming MK3...or when I first saw the teaser poster for the Mortal Kombat movie, when I saw "Casper" in theaters back in 1995. But, I don't expect anyone to read THAT much...and for those who read THIS, thanks! Lol! 25 years later, MK is still a huge part of my life, and I've passed it down to my son, who loves playing all the MK games with me. A huge thanks to EVERYONE at (formerly) Midway Games, and NetherRealm Studios, for being such an major part of my life for the last 2 and a half decades. Looking forward to MK 11!! ;)
TL:DR version - played MK for the first time at a friend's house, on Sega Genesis, in the Fall of '93. Saw Sub-Zero's fatality for the first time that day. As a result, I was forever changed. Tricked my concerned parents into getting me my own copy, by cleverly not mentioning the Blood Code. Discovered MK2 weeks later at my local arcade. As a result, I flipped my shit. Finally played it a few weeks later at my local bowling alley. 25 years later, I still play MK, now with my son.

I remember walking into my local arcade to play Gauntlet or whatever and just seeing a massive crowd around this machine and after every loud grunt, smack or yell just this amazed cheering. When I finally fought through the crowd to see what the fuss was about a guy playing had just pulled off Scorpions fatality and I remember saying to myself "What the hell just happened?" I was hooked from that point on.

The digitized actors who played the characters in the original versions of Mortal Kombat made the game look better than any other fighting game at the time. The actors and actresses were also real life martial artists which made the punches and the kicks in the game more realistic. But of course the main reason why this game got popular was because of the blood and guts (which was originally a secret that you had to find out yourself).

Francisco Cruz Sweet, my Grandma bought me MK1 back then. She watched me play and liked it. My aunt predicted Liu Kangs friendship dance on MK2. When I lost to him in Mk1, he glitched moving side to side on the screen. She said Liu Kang looks like he's dancing. I got my whole Family into MK. Yeah some of my friends couldn't have MK games in their home as you said of ur mom, but hey you can get it whenever you wish now. :) , in honor of my Army Bro I'm going to New York Comic Con as Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang). Enjoy the game when it releases also be safe.

Marquan Brown Thanx Bro, So are you. :D , every game I found interesting I got my family involved. Everyone had there own fav characters so we'd created tournaments. It was always Me as Scorpion or my Army Bro as Sub-Zero at the end. The matches always got crazy but fun. At the few times he and I lost to each other we would laugh at how it happened. I use to hate for Sub-Zero than later had a liking to him, but not as much as u till much later. Have an ICE day and enjoy your weekend bro.

MK was such an integral part of the video game aspect of my childhood. I still remember the first time I saw an MK1 machine in my local bowling alley: My eyes lit up and I was completely blown away by the spectacle of amazing graphics, unapologetic violence, and overall realism of the game. I wish they would put back the sound that made Mortal Kombat II so special. None of their games, I've listen to all of them, had such unique sound like Mortal Kombat II. You hit an upper cut and he says 'outstanding ". Hell, even the end game music at the end was amazing. Mk II just had amazing sound effects and whoo did the voice over was simply the best in the series. I want to hear that voice everytime i pick a character. His voice literally gave me chills.

LesPaul2006 same here. in fact, i had specifically asked Santa to deliver me a Super NES with MKII when i was seven, before i knew that Super NES didn't come with MKII. but i enjoyed all the games in the series, since that time, one by one (the only ones i never played were MK Gold and Special Forces).

I am 34.I live in British Columbia Canada. We live about 12 hours away from Vancouver BC. We used to make the long driving trip every few years for a visit to the big city. We stopped at a 7-11 in a small town called 100 mile. I seen a few kids my age around a game in the corner. I walked over and watched. I couldnt believe how cool the game looked! They were using this ninja guy named Scorpion! Then....I heard the words Finish Him..rest is history :) Everytime I drive by 100 mile 7-11 I smile
