55 years ago, as a pupil in physics class, I became acquainted with this machine. I received an electric shock that I will never forget. As a result, I became an electrician.
About 45 years ago for me, we were trying to see how long a spark we could get on an EXTREMELY dry day. It was my task to tap the adjuster to move the electrode closer, well I missed and landed about 6 feet away wondering how the mule that kicked me had gotten into the classroom on the 4th floor. We were drawing about a 6-7" spark when I got bit.
this looked in surprisingly good condition for being 140 years old. was probably stored properly. nice restoration, cool to see something completely different than usual!
I would hazard a fuess that that particular one is nothing like that old. The materials are more 1980s than 1880s. Polystyrene, for example. Also, the Leyden jars are Pyrex, so can't be pre-1915.
32 years ago I came to my grandmother's work. She was a physics teacher. While she was teaching, I was in the lab. I spun up this machine and got a good electric shock. I became not an electrician, but a museum curator. Now I work with a lot of old machines))) Привет из России)
I've never seen a restoration of a Wimshurst machine. Gorgeous job! Incidentally, you can purchase new brush assemblies to replace those very worn out ones if you want.
A beautiful restoration. I remember being introduced to this machine at school during physics. The entire class held hands and then one brave soul (me) held one electrode, and another kid at the other end of the line touched the other electrode while our demented teacher was merrily turning the handle. It hurt like hell as I remenber :)
Absolutely outstanding restoration. I bet that machine (a really piece of art) now it's better than brand new. I take my hat off in front of you and your job, Sir.
Thank you for a most interesting presentation. I remember seeing one of these machines in action in a physics class when I was at school in the 1950s and was fascinated by it. Congratulations on bringing this machine back to life and making it work and look like new.
What a wonderful job you've done...It's been some time since I enjoyed a restoration so much! And I even learnt of the existence of ebonite and of this machine. Thanks for choosing such different items to restore!
Tres macabre!
Shades of Dr Frankenstein and the Monster... Brilliant choice of ancient Sci-Fi colours Fab. Simply terrific, and the video beautifully cut and assembled. Many thanks. Tom (from France)
What a beautiful and fascinating machine! You did a fantastic job of restoring it to working order and I cannot imagine how many hours you have in this restoration. Thanks for sharing this and I always look forward to your next tutorial.
Started out watching this channel seeing a live steam engine model being restored, and now we're here with this beautiful piece of history. Let's keep it going.
Wow. This must have taken you a long time to do and also to understand how it works. Wonderful job. It's beautiful and I still don't know how it works 😊👍
I told you before that Im glad your back and we all can enjoy your vids again. Thank you for that. It’s not always necessary to leave a comment but this one was worth it. Merci beaucoup et au revoir. Love from Holland 🇳🇱👍👍🙏
I must say you have some superb machining skills, and an amazing ability to freehand intricate pieces. The job you did bringing this back to life (not to mention like new form) is nothing short of perfection.
Excellent restoration! I did a similar one for Jadis Movie Prop Rentals in Santa Monica, CA. Extremely interested in how you handled the Capacitors. I laminated aluminum foil on the outer and inner surfaces. The inner surfaces were real tough to get right. I liked your method much better! I also put a handful of steel ball bearings in the capacitor bottoms. Used similar melt bonding belt material. Really a treat to watch and learn from your restoration!
Thank you for sharing your incredible restoration work video. I totally overwhelmed by your workmanship! Congratulations on a truly excellent completed project. From (a really envious) Rob in Bournemouth, England.
Wow! I said "Wow!" out loud to the dogs at least three times during this one, especially when you turned the wheels back into "ebonite" and cleaned up those Pyrex tubes! I didn't even know those wheels were supposed to be black. That's crazy! It's beautifully done! - Thank you for the video! - Muddypaw 🐾
Excellent work. Now it's an art object. I once had to restore a similar electrophorus machine made in the USSR in the fifties of the twentieth century. But it didn't turn out so beautifully. The only nitpick is the condition of the brushes for removing the charge. But it's very difficult to find suitable material for their repair. Nevertheless, it works great. Also a great selection of paint. I'm happy to give your video a Like and will see what else you've restored.
Beautiful job you did restoring the high-voltage Wimshurst machine. I have never seen a machine like that before. Anyway, it looks much better and it works like a charm too. I am amazed that it could generate high-voltage current. Excellent work.
I once saw plans to make your own at home using a couple of old LP records and some aluminum foil for the main disks, and some large prescripton bottles for the capacitor bodies. Almost had al l the parts at one point, but never got to finish it... Nice job on making this classic device looks like new again!
I made one (secondary school age) 😖with old 78 RPM records and dishwasher liquid bottles and aluminium foil for the Leyden jars. Worked well for a bit then I got a huge whack from it and smashed it as I pushed it away.😖

@@michiganengineer8621 Oh yes, I take your word for it. Thank you for your answer.
oh so that's how it happens then... just like the Peter got bit by a spider and became spiderman
@u.blitzknaller8978, That's, that's quite shocking.
@@michiganengineer8621 that's also an electrifying story.
That one should be in a museum. It's a piece of art.

Not only a working Scientific Machine but a stand alone piece of art , stunning restoration Fabrik !
Thank you !! I love that machine 😀

Ah brings back memories... in the 2000's I sold these and other science equipment as a business.
The Whimshurst was always the most fun to test.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, styrofoam wasn't invented until the '50s so it can't be any older than that.@@andypughtube
absolute fraud to put that in the title. "a fan" is not 2000 years old just because the chinese invented one that long ago.
That machine was designed and developed in 1880. But this one comes from mid century XX
What a shocking transformation!
I was amped to see it completed 😊
The best, currently.
I wonder watts next?

Stunning. Well done sir. The care you take breathing life into these old devices is superb.

Absolutely immaculate restoration. You are an inspiration, and an artist. Thank-you.
That was just fabulous to watch. Well done on that superb restoration and congratulations on keeping it almost original too.
Outstanding craftsmanship. Well done. Cheers.
I love those old educational demonstration machines. Beautiful restoration the extra plating , powder coating and fine buffing makes it a real jewel.
There was no powder coating, but I agree, the restoration was a labour of love.
I've never seen a restoration of a Wimshurst machine. Gorgeous job!

Wow, that wheel is so beutifule. That some amazing work.
That is a piece of art and a nice finish to the video.

I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you so much 😌 Glad you liked it 🙌
That was absolutely fantastic it's a masterpiece. Thank you very much. Take care. Tom.
For those curious why machines like this were considered safe, it’s because it’s not volts that kill, it’s amps.
Wow! what a transformation. Such patience.
Great restoration + cannot believe you did not break the glass (Hat tip to you sir) 😉
I was so scared 😱 😅
One of the more interesting restorations I've ever seen. You did a very good (zero cringe) job.

Where has this thing been sitting for the last hundred years? Also I love how you fixed the mistakes the factory made.
Its probably only 20 years old. they never stopped selling them as curiosities.
If you say so 🤷♂️ The seller told me he got this from his grand father
