We didn’t haha. Just used the frame to puncture holes through the abdomen. We made sure to do it at points where the hoops rested on the frame. We can slide the abdomen back off for storing.
Thank you! The materials naturally were water resistant (PVC pipe, trash bags, swim noodles etc.) so no worries there. Wind is more tricky...we did use a bit of the ground webbing and tied it to legs as an anchor. In years past when we’ve made spiders we pounded a wooden dowel into the grass and then threaded the PVC leg onto that as somewhat of a tent peg. That also helped. Didn’t need to do that this time though because of the webbing.
We had most of the tools and spray paint already. The PVC pipes were approx $120 and that was the biggest expense. The eyes, hair, pantyhose, swim noodles, hula hoops and netting all came from The Dollar Store.
Great question! We didn’t but used materials that withstand water anyway (trash bags, plastic eyes, PVC pipe etc.). Biggest challenge was wind and a few pieces of hair came off but that was all. Awesome! Yes it was 3 crosses (middle) and 2 T joints (ends). We just poked a couple holes in some cardboard and used washers as hole reinforcers, then attached it all with zip ties.
22” was the longest segment we did. We did set the body on an upside down storage bin to assemble it. You could also use a 5 gallon bucket. It helps for balance as you attach the legs then can drill the pieces for reuse while it’s being supported. We did glue the “knee & ankle” segments together with PVC glue, just not the hip joints so they could detach.

cdub99 Great!! We bought bundles of the PVC pipe that were cut into 5 foot segments from Lowe’s for easy transportation. The cut segments varied at each joint. Depends on how big you want the spider to be. You can vary them just be consistent with what you decide per segment (18”-22”). We did longest closest to the body, then shortest in the middle, then medium length for the end. Course the back legs we only did a solid pipe for the middle and end segments. It’s important for stabilization.

How exactly did you "feed" the abdomen onto the frame? Did you stick it through the bag only or is it threaded through the plastic-wrapped hula hoop base? Just feel like it wouldn't be secured with just a plastic bag holding it together...

How exactly did you "feed" the abdomen onto the frame? Did you stick it through the bag only or is it threaded through the plastic-wrapped hula hoop base? Just feel like it wouldn't be secured with just a plastic bag holding it together...
Great question! We did just poke holes through the plastic and used the pvc poles to do it. We made sure that the hula hoops of the abdomen sat on the PVC frame so it would support the weight.
