A good example that I personally saw "out in the wild" was someone playing Skyrim and experiencing funny glitches, and it got a bunch of views, so the very next day, they just posted more clips from the same stream, probably around 5 (like the suggestion goes), and now they have like 100k subs, from like, just a handful of Skyrim clips.
      It could happen to you.

I can't fathom why UA-cam won't let creators categorize videos by series. Playlists just are not cutting it. The algorithm treats every video by one creator the same. This has led to the site being cluttered by every UA-camr having multiple channels for each type of video they want to make, because each channel can only upload the same exact kind of video or the algorithm will trash the whole channel. And it's so hard to watch old vids in a series in-order, because Playlists suck and get buried in the channel menus. UA-cam calls them "channels" but they're too stupid to realize that every channel has multiple shows.

Your icarly videos were what got me to watch. I know im an outlier in what i watch nearly always 45 min +, but it was completely clear that you put in a ton of work, enjoyed every second of it, and showed your humor in a way that was safe (no joke, I think it was brilliant). I want you to do what you are good at, which has gotta bring a smile to many people, and that's got to feel good. And I also enjoy learning about who you are. Stay healthy but keep doing the great work if it helps!

This is super interesting, I've never heard the algorithm explained in a reasonable way. In a lot of ways, this is also like art posting on social media, where you can find a 'hit' but then stress over how to keep in the graces of the algorithm to keep showing your art.
I'm also happy to hear you feel more control and contentment in your life, I've been on the quinton reviews channel for many many years, and you've definitely accomplished being a creator I respect and am interesting in your opinion and would watch any video you put out at this point. Very cool

As someone who's been doing UA-cam for over 4 years now and have started finding success in the last 8 or so months, that ending monologue really resonated with me. There is something so special about those early days of the UA-cam journey, when you can just make anything you want any time you want and there's no consequences or possibility of failure. I never understood why so many UA-camrs would make second channels just to post well-made content there, but now that my channel is 14x the size it used to be I understand.

I've not watched or read too many "THIS is How You UA-cam" style advice pieces, and when I do it's usually from a creator I already watch who just so happened to do a video like that that week (case in point). Partly because a lot of those pieces are grifts, but also because the advice given in them is usually outdated six months out, or a year out, or 5 years out, or what have you. This is the first one that truly feels timeless. Because, you always hear the "build your base" advice, but this is probably the first time I've seen it in such a clear case-in-point manner with the "Do it five times" advice. Like, that just clicked so many things together in my mind. It's one of those things that's so blindingly obvious, but you *need* someone to point it out to you so you can see it for the first time.
So thank you for making this video, and I can't wait to spend a literal half day watching Sam & Cat Part 2.

  • @blouburkette

I am literally about three hours into the second Victorious video for the third time. Those videos, as I commented on them, are a great comfort to me. My world took a shift after I read Jennette McCurdy's book, you Sam and Cat video dropped not long after...I've been hooked ever since.
I graduated from film school in 2014. Your experience here reminds me so much of my own, and I've never even been able to create a youtube channel. I've FINALLY started to get better healthwise and am working on a script for something I want to post. I never plan to be a regular poster and that has always scared me from not wanting to try. So few people can be Colossal is Crazy. But Quinton, much how when people watch your content it you feel motivated. This motivates me. Thanks man. Keep being yourself, trusting yourself, and having faith you'll be all right.
To all the youngins, I'm 31, as the olds say, it's never too late. :)

I've been watching your channel for 5-6ish years now. I think the darkest time was definitely when Mumkey and those jerks were harassing you constantly. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the best place either back then, and I actually watched them too. But then I did some growing up and I came back to your channel and saw that you'd matured a lot too, and it was interesting to start watching your stuff again since I could tell you'd pivoted a bit and grown up a lot (at least, it seemed you had to me).
My preamble has nothing to do with what I initially wanted to comment on though, which is- please post another Rankin Bass video on this channel.
I totally understand the algorithm stuff and know it could dilute your main channel's momentum, but I love Rankin Bass, and it's a severely under discussed topic. So even if you just post a bit of a rambling video for the holidays on the studio, a specific film, or whatever - I'd be excited to give it a watch. Your delivery has gotten a lot better since you initially started posting videos on them, I think the first was Frosty? But that may be a retroactive change, since an earlier one may have been binned.
But yeah, I think using this channel for that kind of stuff seems good. Maybe make it a Rankin Bass/Garfield/whatever holiday ramble video.
Of course, if you don't want to, I get that, but I got to the point in this video where you said "No Rankin Bass" and I grabbed my phone to say something, haha.
Looking forward to your next main video!

  • @DOCTOR.DEADHEAD

It's always interesting to me hearing creators talk about how much the algorithm changing to favor watch-time affected both the platform and their approach to making videos, because a lot of times it's a case of them having to let go of content they might've wished to make more of. That's not to say every UA-camr is some poor creative being forced to pump out videos they aren't satisfied with, but there's still an element of having to play by the site's rules even if you're making what you want to, and I always think about that when people don't view this as a "real" job with responsibilities and consequences. It's not just this magical site where you can make anything and get money from it like kid me believed.

Holly s*tballs why are you making me cry with this video!!! 30:41 oh my gods Quinton, as a fellow creative who’s had a really rough time with the creating part of being creative and also as someone who enjoys your content so much to rewatch them back to back whenever I want to listen to something, it really shows you’ve enjoyed making this content and I’m really glad it has allowed you to be able to slow down a bit and worry less about what you’re putting up because it can be the worst feeling in the world to just produce something because it’s what’s expected of you. I’m really glad these series have allowed you to focus on what kind of content you wanna put up without having to worry so much about whether it will destroy the traction you’ve been building up so far.

There was once a group of lets players, they were never topical, they would commit to the bit and play things that seemed funny rather than trying to chase trends. This garnered a fanbase that was loyal, when Smash Brothers Ultimate released, did they have a video on it in their fighting game series that friday? No, that week was dedicated to a game where you needed to get panty shots to get knock outs. They went at their own pace, and the algorithm murdered them for it. The group split up, went their seperate ways, but the subreddit remained. You may wonder why I bring this up. That subreddit is how I found Quinton. It's the second best place to discuss anything, and that has led to it being the second best Quinton Reviews Subreddit. It intoduced the channel to people like me, who are going to come watch anything that popped up because it fits my sense of humor. You see, there's also something else the channel is known for, everyone it ever gave the bump to would become more popular than them shortly after, without fail, even if the personality was brought onto the podcast and didn't have anything to add, it still led to their channel blowing up. Quinton's got the Best Friends Bump, even if the algorithm throws you to the wolves, the bump will remain

i've been with your channel from the era of reviewing obscure doctor who media, and i just wanna say. take a year between videos if you need to, heck take longer. as long as you're able to comfortably support yourself and your team, we as an audience will always show up to watch the videos. you're making stuff that's hours and hours long, greater than feature length documentaries.
this level of work ethic and sheer output is unprecedented from any documentariens in the past, so there's no reason why you should feel bad about somehow not keeping up pace lol.

I watched this the other day, and Quinton I just wanted to say that I love what you do with the channel. I'm happy you are satisfied with how the channel is going, and I'm excited to see what's next. The History Channel saga is something I rewatch almost monthly, and your Childhood Trauma video never fails to make me laugh. If folks miss the old content, it's still there, they can go back and watch it again, and have a good time doing it.

I found your channel after your first victorious video, when it blew up my Tumblr feed. All of my mutuals were cheering on this random channel that did an 8hr analysis of something I grew up with. And I was hooked. And it helped me through some really hard times.
I still watch those videos, and I've had multiple "watch parties" where I just watch from Fred-> current since.
What I love about your content, isn't the topics, or the editing, or writing ((I love all of those don't get me wrong)) but I love how happy you seem to be. I'm autistic and extremely empathetic, if I can sense that the person who's content I'm watching doesn't like what they're doing, it turns me away even if I loved what they've done before, or the topic they're talking about. You feel happy about it. Passionate about it and secure in the knowledge that if you post a 12 hour analysis on a nickelodeon show it will find people who want to watch it and to share in that with you. And you give off an energy that, even if it didn't find those people, you still enjoyed yourself while making it.
I wish I was in a financially stable enough position to join your Patreon to help assist you like how your content has assisted me. In the meantime I'm gonna keep watching your videos, and every ad break and do my part to get you some ad money and boost retention.
Thank you for your content. And thank you for your effort to pull back the curtain and be honest and open. It means a lot. I can't wait for your next project. ❤❤❤

I literally began my “wait for something to blow up and do it five times” left turn around 2 weeks ago. Literally threw my current project in a box (I can’t throw stuff away lol) and just started grinding. Perfect timing for a video like this haha, can’t wait to see what’s coming up!

Glad to hear you're making the content that keeps you secure while also (when possible!) making content you are passionate about. I found you through iCarly and have rewatched the whole series twice. But I'm also going back and enjoying your older content - like the Garfield stuff and Death of Annotations. I'll probably enjoy anything you make that has your signature charm to it 😊 Thanks for sharing it with us

This was an extremely valuable video, Quinton. Thank you! While I haven't been able to focus as much time as I'd like on my own channel until recently, I was able to gather my own understanding of the algorithm based on what I saw from your Nick series. And sure enough, I got my comeback video to blow up as a result. But all of this info gave me even more insight, especially in regards to the existence of second channels. Making me think of a lot of different strategies going forward. Thank you once again!

Wow. Just randomly visited your channel (still looking forward to the next Sam & Cat video. Like, that's the main reason I read Jennette's book! 😅), and saw you had just uploaded this! How serendipitous! 😅🤪

I feel there are few people in the world whom I enjoy the voice & mannerisms as much as you. I think there's a specific characteristic to how you carry yourself and create media that just hits me just right. Cannot wait to see anything more you come up with in the future, best of luck.

Great insight, thank you for sharing. I found your channel through the History series and have loved your video style ever since. You have definitely given a lot to think about regarding consistency and quality as new UA-camrs like ourselves grow.

People thinking you’re dead versus those of us following you on twitter and seeing you accidentally blow up every other week and you lowkey hate it 😂😂
But for real, loved this look into the algorithm and your process! I love that you’re able to make the stuff you want to make AND succeed, and I can admit, it worked! I subscribed to you after the Victorious video, but went back into your catalogue and could see you switching things up and trying different stuff over the years, and did experience some hit-or-miss with the QuintonReviews I’d really enjoyed versus the older stuff that wasn’t hitting the same. (Especially because that topical stuff is topical! It doesn’t hold up years later the way the History Channel or Nickelodeon videos do.)
Again, glad things are better for you personally and that these videos succeeding has let you become a better creator! Can’t wait for the next video whenever it’s ready! ❤

Either way, its good to hear from you like this outside of Patreon and it's great to see you putting in the work! Take care💞

I just assumed you were making more long videos and working on that. It's good to hear you are doing well and feeling at ease with your channel and content. I found all the information about the algorithm really interesting. I wouldn't mind hearing more about making content and behind the scenes if that's something you are interested in doing.
PS: this is also a genius way to promote your other videos because now I want to check out the history channel series.

My favorite type of content is the type that only comes out maybe once a year and then its creator(s) retreat again until another month or a year rolls around and they pop out like the easter bunny. I wish everything I choose to engage with like podcasts, videos, movies and video games worked that way. It is something to look forward to.
