This might be the most impressive win he's ever had on the channel. At the end there was no time advantage left and Fabi had a better position but Robert saw the blunder and instantly punished it for a win.
Robert was losing, and Fabi blundered. Not hard to do, when you start off with 40% of the opponents time. What impresses me more, was that Fabi was making consistently good moves until he made a mistake.
@@giangra92 I am not wishing to take away anything from Robert's win. I just encourage people to not take these things out of context. Fabi isn't really my hero, but I do respect that he is like a walking encyclopedia of opening theory.
Has Robert earned his first GM Norm yet? Also, how's his classical-time strength? So many good young players these days get so caught up in Blitz that they spend too little time really preparing for middle-game play in classical time control.
Why do people talk about GM norms when they watch someone play blitz? That’s like saying the high school basketball star is ready for the nba bc he’s good at free throws
@@mikecantreed well, maybe because winning a blitz game to a top GM might be representative of your level. I'd say it's more like winning a 3-Point contest to a top NBA shooter when you're playing in G League.
What a game. One thing about Robert, this game showed his ability to take pressure and defend. Funny when I saw that he took back pawn with his f pawn instead of queen, I was surprised, but on deeper look it made sense. In the end, having that file open won him the game.
Blitz is definitely not Fabi's strong point, but he did win the candidates tournament and achieved world rank #2, really incredible achievements. Fabi was the first American player to compete for the title since Fischer I believe, thanks for taking the USA to the championship! I remember watching it on Twitch it was a blast. Nice game Robert GM title coming your way!
can you imagine how happy he must be to win against a super gm? the time odds weren't crazy either, they both had a minute at one point. what a great achievement.
The time odds were pretty crazy though? They weren't 1 to 5 minutes, but, in all fairness, only a handful of GMs can give those kinds of time odds to an IM. But 2 to 5 minutes is still a huge disadvantage. Otherwise, Black's position would've just collapsed under time pressure.
@@yonaeb Not the only way, in a blitz a lot depends on your shape and mood. Also anyone sometimes blunders in blitz. Good IM vs GM will have his share of wins on the distance. It can even be mathematically calculated
I love how this guy plays. he's phenomenal for his level I feel. in this game he immediatly knew he was in a winning position despite the fact he was losing in the previous move, and he immediatly played the best move with such time pressure. fantastic
Comments are misleading, Fabi was better the entire game but then made a blunder and lost. You'd think he was outplayed from start to finish judging by these comments.
Yeah ... people are quick to make hyperbolic statements. Fabi was not overly concerned with managing his clock well either. He was in pure casual mode.
All respect to Caruana. By sitting down at Coffee Chess, he voluntarily takes the risk of losing a game and his reputation. It is so easy to make a little mistake, even if you are much better than your opponent.
Fabiano will not lose any reputation. It's just fun and relaxing. Anyway, it was probably hard for him to concentrate, because he could feel the eyes of a pretty brunette on him.
I don't think your rep can be damaged when you are playing a ton of games with massive time disadvantages. No one would expect him to win everytime, he is able to make bad mistakes which cost him.
The only people who would think his reputation is at stake when losing at 5:2 time odds are people who don’t really matter. Anyone that understands the game knows that Robert is too strong an IM to give those time odds to. It’s Fabi practicing. He didn’t lose. He’s smart enough to not care about folks that THINK he did.
The fact that Nakamura managed to win and only lose on time against this guy with 5:1 time odds make me understand how Hikaru it's on another planet in blitz game.
Are you really serious? The gear they use has been in the video descriptions for years. Why doesn’t anyone expand the damn description? Click the links. They’re all there.
Fantastic effort to beat Fabi - even with those huge time odds. Then again, I don't think Fabi was really trying THAT hard. ie. he was trying but in "casual" mode.
Why do people always post only half the quote? "The hardest game to win is a won game... Unless you consider drawn and lost games, in which case it comes third."
I'm sure Fabi wins more games against him with 5:2 odds just shows how strong a super gm is, but if ruthless IM is that good, then why not just play with even time? I don't think he would win a single game, but a few draws.
And what's the point of this then? 5:2 odds specially done to make the games more interesting. Without them anyone understans in advance Fabi is a huge favourite. What';s to prove here if he just wins all the games against a weaker player?
Well Fabi not the best blitz player out there. He def prone to mistakes at this time control. But still good game by Robert. He held on in the mid game and capitalized on Fabi mistake.
There are IMs that are tactical beasts and would destroy any GM in a match if all the games were chaotic. Problem is an IM has to be more than a one trick pony to beat a strong GM in a match.
Dont understand why people here say Robert is great etc.Island pawn + massive king side weakness. Fabi is clearly crushing him left right center, dominating the game from the very start and blundered under time pressure. If this is classical, Robert has 0 chance.
Honestly not a fair game imo. An IM is almost a GM and has a great knowledge of chess. And with time odds Fabi was in an huge advantage. If the guy was an ameteur would be alright but he is strong as a regular GM. It was a mistake by Fabi playing with time odds against a strong IM
I admire Fabi's cool composure even after a loss
