Thanks so much for the review, it was very informative and very well done. I really appreciate that you took the time to review a game that you knew you probably wouldn't instantly love. Looking at what you had to say I can certainly see that the game has some weaknesses but I do like Martin Wallace designs and I love economic games, especially historic ones with a map so I think I will like it more than you did but time will tell. I am currently waiting for this game to arrive from the kickstarter but since I live in New Zealand it will probably be a while before I get it.
If I am not mistaken, there were no cards in the original. If there was on auction on an empty area, the winning player would roll dice to determine what would be placed there. Not my favorite lighter Martin Wallace design, but still solid and quite thematic. I cannot speak to the new edition, but the original included thematic explanations in the rule book for every action a player could take, as well as design notes about the theme.
tbh when i seen it at ukge i was impressed that they even got the auction to work at all in the solo game lol i know its not the same as with other players but i felt it has been done better here than in other games that try to do it... i think it would take a while to get my head around though i think i would have a descent time with it. but its also kinda outside my wheelhouse too great review luke! Timely. My copy just showed up. Looks like a entry level economic game, with some slightly punishing elements of luck and speculation which is exactly what I was looking for. I also like the quirkiness / quaintness of it all. I could also see it not landing with some people in my group and coming across mediocre or as a mixed bag as you've described for yourself.
Excellent! :D This game will certainly work for many and if you're one of them, then great! You can also see how some aspects will be divisive among players.
As a regular solo gamer, I can't see any reason to add a solo mode to this game (Not everything has to play solo). Personally I figured that I wouldn't want this game as it doesn't look to be in my wheelhouse as an economic game or as an auction game but this review kind of solidified that. Thanks for this review.

Saw you uploaded a new review, great i said, let's watch, then I entered the Twilight Zone when I heard you say two things: Economic and Martin Wallace and I immediately went 'Oh dear lord, what timeline is this?' It looks cool I guess, even though the the theme and the economic part will not call me to the table unless one of my friends want to play it (I don't see that happening, but weirder things have happened). One minute thing, and I guess it is fun; some time ago, we are talking decades and decades, England had a lot of businesses in México, among them a lot of mines (surprise surprise), so guess what food is extremely popular in those regions? Yeah, pasties, even though the flavors are so different, but I love mole pasties so much.
@@TheBrokenMeeple Mole is a traditional sauce made in Mexico, a combination of a lot of nuts, chiles and many other things; it is, admittedly, a very hard sauce to make, but thankfully you can find packaged ones on stores that are like paste, you just add chicken stock to it. Real del Monte is literally an English city in Mexico so you will find pastes (yes, without the i) are the traditional dish there, mixed with many Mexican traditional dishes as filling, and they are GOOD.
Aaah 😱… After constantly hesitating to back, or not back this game, but ENORMOUSLY intrigued by it, I finally made my preorder last week at Alley Cat Games. Fingers crossed that the players here will like it more than you Luke. Although I have to say, that I completely understand your issue with a 4+ player game. (And I feel that way with a lot of board games…)
100% agree with you on this one. It seemed like a lot of time for not a lot of action. I'm a solo roller so a definite pass for me, even though I am a Euro lad 😂 MP with some ruthlessly players could be interesting I guess...?
The two aren't related. People aren't losing on the first round because of complexities in the game, they ate losing because either of suffering on the blind bid or the market prices randomly not going their way.
Legend has it that if you encounter a soul eater you become a shambling empty vessel and come up with such game themes. I am bored of the same generic sword and sorcery fantasy setting for so many games, but can you get more dour and depressing than "mining tin and copper in Cornwall and there is arsenic and unemployment that leads to emigration". Well, I guess there could be an Orphanage expansion and malnourished meeple children working the mines. The game might be fine, but the theme is what a ring wraith might consider fun.
Ha ha well its not the other DETAIL format and there was a lot to talk about! The blitz is more about the effects and editing time needed as most of my videos aren't just " switch camera on and talk" like others do 😅

Not enough to justify it. The ruthless part is only the blind aspect, nothing else has you really being mean.
