Matt and Quinns at this point have become monoliths, unshakeable from their precipices as long-time board game critics. Tom feels like OUR rising champ. The creative energy coupled with the self-deprecation that defines my life. We get to see his rise and his passion develop. Am I allowed to have a favorite SUSD guy? Because I am always excited for a Tom video even if I don't care about the game.
@@SpencerDub I'm getting a real strong sense of Tom's "shtick." It's the "here's a cool thing so I'll do a funny bit that just kinda keeps going and I don't know how to stop it help help help!" Which, honestly, I find really funny. :D
He's like a SU&SD super-fan given access to their channel and backlog of in-jokes, along with their prestigious 10£ budget. He's too dangerous to be kept alive, and he knows it.
that writing on the hands bit, where the writing on the right hand was terrible, fully sent me. im like frickin bustin right now. im dying literally i am friggin evaporating friggin i am water vapor
My favorite part of the game? Playing “auctioneer” when you offer a painting from your hand. You get to come up with a bunch of nonsense to describe the artist, their painting, and the *certain* future value of the art. A true classic.
My artist girlfriend saw this and now I must immediately buy it. Btw, she's going to be big one day, you may want to buy her art now (we need money for more board games).
I had genuinely no interest in watching a review for this game but couldn't close the tab because of how good this video was. Tom's style somehow one ups SUSDs usual weirdness and I love it
Modern Art is a game that I can explain the rules of in 5 minutes, but also one where I have revelations about strategy almost every time I play. It's so elegant and complex, but also so fun for a first time player who has no idea what they're doing. It's cutthroat calculation, speculation, psychological manipulation, plus giving paintings goofy names and laughing at yourself for getting drawn into a ridiculous bidding war where there's no way you should pay that much but there's also no way you can let your opponent get that painting.
You forgot to mention the most important part of Modern Art: THE TINY GAVEL!!! It may be the best game component ever invented. Holding the tiny gavel makes a player THE AUCTIONEER, imbued with the power that title entails. The toy factor is high with the tiny gavel, and words cannot describe how effortlessly it enables players to slip into the theme.
Wanted to let you know that within the first 30 minutes of this review hitting UA-cam I watched the whole review, thought about it for 2 seconds, and ordered Modern Art. Very excited to try it out!
I love the way that you can tell multiple takes have been done of the first scene with the paper taped onto the back - Great video and top notch comedy !
Nice to see some classics covered. I have a musty old original that is not nearly as nice-looking as the new print run - may have to investigate further.
Truly fab review, Tom! I am a big fan of classic SUSD vids and this really took me back there in all the right ways. Full of surprises and fun but coupled with astute commentary and excellent shots of the game. Amazing!
Love Modern Art. I am also love being agent of chaos when playing it. "So you thought we would be all fighting for these 3 artists? And you have all sunk in a lot of money. Why don't I add a fourth into the mix? Why can't all 5 join in on the fun? What do you mean I have completely ruined any ability to judge what any given painting is worth?"
My family walked in while I was watching this review on tv, and were enthralled by the game's theme and I immediately went to my local game store to buy it. Probably the first time anyone in my family cared about a board game I'd be interested in playing. Good job Tom.
Tom you're an amazingly talented human. This review is hilarious, well edited and perfectly planned. I walk away from your review wanting to be your friend both out of the possible entertainment of the companionship, as well as pity. Well done
I can't believe how I didn't know anything about this channel until now. I discovered this channel by a Extra Credits video. This channel is really amazing. Good luck doing everything that you want to do and have a good day :) .
I'm not interested in playing 90% of the games reviewed on SUSD, and I'll only play a small fraction of the remaining 10%. But I love how endearing and colorful SUSD's content is, so I keep coming back.
Bravo Family Dumpster! This will be in my collection!!! Looks great... forgot to say... loved the modernist reference pear...I’ve missed the reference pear....
It happened again ... I saw the review, remembered that i had the game on my "to Buy list". Well..let's buy it. It was available last ... oh damn ... sold out. Event the Oink version.
I kept awaiting a sudden "Structure is a myth! " cut shot. Your Button Shy review has scarred me. 🤣 Love the Economy Zone dumpster fire at the end. Great work!
Wow Tom, this is a true SU&SD review, with everything that makes it great, and the right type of humor, characteristic of Quins and Matt. I'm happy you joined the gang :-D
This review got me to buy this game; I just got to play it for the first time today and I have to say, it did not disappoint. I'm looking forward to getting some good mileage out of it!
Oh Tom, talking to me about Modern Art like I haven't had the same portrait of an old house with an old tree hanging in my place since the beginning of time.
I have the french oink version and most of the time I forget that it's not in english. The rules are so simple that no one really needs to reference them once the game is explained. And I love how small the box is and that it comes with an easel.
Gotta say, I really appreciate the nonstandard modernist pear. With galleries closed, it was a welcome dose of true art. 🤔
I now have a strange urge to see 'Pear descending a stair case, no. 2' ... And other such classics... 🍐
The fact that Tom made a non standard modern reference pear just shows how far he’ll go to make a silly joke.
I still wish their table top simulator video had a reference pair. It's the mascot.
Tom has actually reinvigorated the SUSD style of reviews. Knocking it out of the park! Well done, man!!!
I absolutely love Tom's style of videos. Totally agree.
Agreed, it feels more like the old days. Last glimpsed in the dune/sandworm review

Yeah, this is a call back to the old style reviews. The humour has gradually disappeared over time, only to be reincarnated by Tom.
Tom is growing to be far too powerful.
He's like a SU&SD super-fan given access to their channel and backlog of in-jokes, along with their prestigious 10£ budget. He's too dangerous to be kept alive, and he knows it.
Was obvious one minuet in, and solidified by that final joke.
I'd rather see this Tom than that Vasel guy at Dice Tower.
And took over SUSD now
that writing on the hands bit, where the writing on the right hand was terrible, fully sent me. im like frickin bustin right now. im dying literally i am friggin evaporating friggin i am water vapor
What was the music in that section? Very familiar, but I cannot place it.....
@@PatBradv2 I believe it was a song from Breath of the Wild. Probably Lost woods or something.

Tom is a lot like actual modern art: colorful, imaginative, and highly influenced in value by wealthy investors seeking to manipulate the market
Id buy some LEAP calls on Tom. His value is going to the roof

Changing the Danger Zone MIDI to add the extra syllable to make 'economy zone' fit is a touch of genius! Another great video, Tom!!
"the economy zone is on fire!"
Just like in real life!
You can really tell that Tom puts a lot of effort in his videos - all the skits/jokes and fun edits makes for such entertaining reviews!

I love all these weird little paintings, but i want to use that tiny gavel for nefarious purposes.
Love the 80s vibe to the Economy Zone. The "video tape" quality and synthesizer Danger Zone-esque music is brilliant.

If you want to be really really good at this game, I recommend getting a PhD in economics and at least one or two courses in auction theory.
Haha so true. I love it even though playing with our data analytics guys at work, I never stood a chance.

one of the best videos yet! the hand management and ending got me good.
This video watches like a vintage SUSD video. Tom has his own spins, but his videos are getting more and more recognizable as SUSD, which is awesome
I miss playing modern art. everything tom is saying is super true
The SUSD recommendation engine keeps giving me this, I was dying for this review
Same! I ended up buying it, and it is a family favorite now, which is an achievement for us.

I don’t own a single board game, but SU&SD is one of my favorite channels!
I love all of the positive reviews to start this year off! Thanks so much Tom for all your great videos!
Love the reference pear! One of the best SUSD reviews I've seen.

That cut to Matt getting a face full of paint... just beautiful.
I have no idea how this game plays, still, but I WAS entertained, which is why I come here.
'The dumbest joke yet' earned a hearty laugh. I'm always here for Pythonesque Tom-foolery ;)

How in hell did Tom make me want to play a game I've played before and decided that I wouldn't play again
Just how creative and fun can an explanation get! I kinda hope that backspace key stays broken for us
I love this game and got very excited when I saw that Tom had reviewed it, great video!

shoutout to cook serve delicious 3, the best game soundtrack of 2020
Tom's videos are fast becoming some of my favourite. You really have built such a brilliant team, well done guys!
Is that Cook Serve Delicious Music? Swear I've heard it before
Yea! It's CSD3! I'd remember that ost anywhere
Tom's video style is fantastic. I don't think Mosern Art is a game I would enjoy but this video was still so fun to watch.
Ah man my version doesn't have a little gavel. What a miss. Must've updated the components recently (I have this same updated art version even)
After listening to the podcast, I appreciate Tom's runs to and from the Economy Zone so much more. Thank you Quinns for guilting him into doing it!
How did I miss this review when it came out?!? This is one of my favorite games ever.
Sounds like someone's been playing a bit of Cook Serve Delicious.
The economy zone skit was epic, the song work perfectly.
one thing I like about the Finnish print is that it uses local artists
So what you're saying, Tom, is that when you're selling an art to your good friend, you've gotta sell the best art that you can?
This reference makes no sense but I love that song too much to not like the comment. Damn you!
