I don't know why you're complaining about authorization. Samus is lucky Adam even authorised her to move. Hell, the universe probably didn't exist until Adam authorized it.

He also said (And this is literally the meaning of what he said during an interview) he "didn't want to force any limiting controlls on the player." -.- As far as I'm concerned the best way to avoid that would have been to keep multiple options to controll the game open. Like, wii-remote+nunchuck, or that classic controller thingy nintendo never bothers to include as a controll option for any of their games.

Yep. Seems like nintendo wanted to gave some fun just to piss us all off. I actually played this game again and had beaten Ridley again, however it took me 7 tried before I realized my wii mote was on its last legs, so I had to dig up my wii motion plus controller just to get it working again. And eventually I did kill Ridley again. I hate the version of Ridley in this game, but I love the composition music it has. However I'm still scared of phantoon in this game. Hes just creepy as hell

Man it’s weird rewatching this 11 years later with Metroid Dread coming out this coming October, with Prime 4 later down the line. Imagine thinking any of that would happen back then.
I know right? Feels like a dream, a weird what if / huh / what happened?! Scenario Dread thankfully is on another level, and progression / reason for gear loss is story related. But Other M. It is a tough one to say. It is essential to play, to have the full series experience. However. It is difficult to recommend.
In chronological order: Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission- Ridley is killed with no problem. Robot Ridley is also destroyed. Metroid Prime- Meta Ridley is pwned. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption- Samus gets ambushed but puts Meta Ridley in his place. Omega Ridley appears but is dispatched. Super Metroid- Ridley is ready to- wait, never mind. Samus killed him. Metroid: Other M- Oh no! It's Ridley! PTSD!!!
michael nousak 1: The whole goddamn point of Other M IS Ridley; they needed to make a body so Fusion could be canon again. 2: I really think you're underestimating exactly how bad Super Metroid was. Samus is basically having the emotional equivallent of Cthulu had the Flu because literally her entire life went down the shitter in Super Metroids, sans her revenge against the Pirates, and now she just learned even that is pointless and she's essensially done not a goddamn thing with her life pertaining to any of her goals (The Phazon Crisis was more focused on the Space Pirates; the actual destroying phazon was simply a consequence of fighting the space pirates to her). You brushing it off as "she can kill him again' is EXACTLY THE PROBLEM. What's probably running through Samus's mind is she can kill Ridley again, and again, and again, and she will never be rid of him, meaning every goddamn thing she does is pointless. And not just that alone, but Samus realizing the events of Super Metroid were a complete and utter failure and everything she worked towards was irrevocably destroyed. Top that on top of the Killer's Remorse that drove her to even set Super into motion in the first place, and you have what AN ACTUAL PSYCHOLOGIST WHO LOOKED AT THE GAME said is a completely predictible reaction to the immense stress, guilt, and hopelessness she felt at that moment, things which all combined under THAT level are bound to cause a PTSD like mental shutdown. We havent seen all aspects of Samus's character, all we've seen is what she's like when everything is under her control. Sure, a few omlettes may have been broken across her journies, but Samus was confident in herself that she had her goal in sight, and that she could very much reach that goal with ease. here, the situation has spiraled completely out of her control and no matter what she did in Super Metroid, she failed regardless. the realization she may never reach her goal, the belief she can never kill Ridley, never reach her goal, which took not only her parents but, in a roundabout way, the Baby Metroid, caused a mental shutdown- a heroic BSOD. As for Samus's known character, she really has none. Samus was essensially the player for the entire duration of MP1 and 2, with no real emotion being shown, and the fact she's hopped the fuck up on Phazon in MP3 draws what little characterization she has in that game into question later on. The only reliable source of characterization we had was in Fusion, which, playing back to back with Other M, seems eerily remicient of Other M- inner monologues and all. Regardless of all of this, Samus's characterization is even questionable in Other M considering the intense emotional stress she is under; she shows symptoms of mild depression in my opinion. I really wonder if we can blame Team Ninja for the timeframe; I imagine if they developed a game taking place shortly after Prime 3, and Tanebe was involved in the production, Samus would have a different presentation. You make Samus sound like a gun happy psychopath, she shows quite a bit of restraint in many instances in Prime 2 and 3. She hesitates to shoot Dark Samus in two of their encounters, hesitates to shoot U-Mos (thankfully), hesitates to shoot both Rundas and Ghor, and, outside of the Prime games, spared the Infant Metroid which was DIRECTLY DEFYING the Federation. She SHOULD have shot it if she was following orders, but instead she spared it feeling guilt and brought it to be researched at Ceres. So no, if "shooting it is a valid option", it isnt her first fucking instinct. We aren't talking about a gun happy lunatic here. In other words, your characterization is wrong to begin with, Other M not required to contradict it.

He considers Prime a gaiden series, and he has confirmed a few things: Phazon is completely obliterated from the entire universe after Prime 3 Metroid Prime (AKA Dark Samus) was killed for real by Samus at the end of Prime 3 Any 3D games that take place chronologically after Prime 3 would NOT bear the Prime moniker but instead have a new subtitle (either he went back on this or Federation Force indeed takes place prior to prime 3) The sequel to Metroid Prime 3 will have Sylux as the antagonist. Sylux was also the pilot of the ship at the end of Prime 3, official confirmation from Tanebe Now, what he DOES NOT consider canon is the manga. It's like Metal Gear Portable Ops is; it's selectively canon, since it's a reteling of ZM with non canon elements like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb following Samus to Zebes. In fact I'd say anything past the 3rd chapter is probably exclusively non canon. What IS canon about the manga are Samus's backstory (K2-L), Old Bird, and Grey Voice. However, these were elements created by the Super Metroid nintendo power comic and were NOT the brainchildren of the Manga. Additionally, having the Metroids created during Samus's childhood would contradict their implicit antiquity in the Prime series. Which, during an interview concerning Federation Force, they AGAIN reiterated is canon.

Also, the manga is only selectively canon (like MGPO for Metal Gear) because several elements of it contradict the main series. However aspects of it do find their way into the main series; most of these however were the brainchild of the Super Metroid Nintendo Power comic and NOT the manga. Old Bird, Grey Voice, Samus's backstory, and possibly a form of PTSD are holdovers in the main canon. However, since nothing after the 3rd chapter at latest can be even remotely integrated into the main canon as is, how her PTSD is manifested can therefore be radically altered. Instead of being triggered by the sight of Ridley in general it is instead triggered by the seeming impossibility of his resurrection and the realization that Super Metroid was a failure in every respect, and that the Infant Metroid may have died in vain. She does nnot react similarly to Neo Ridley because she already understands what happened and rationalized it in her head, as well as coming to grips with the general concept. Additionally, she saw Ridley MUCH earlier on in the game, so she knew Ridley's revival via X Parasite was plausible. In fact, Adam ALLUDES to the fact Samus was savvy to the Metroid and cloning conspiracy (he says, quote, "But you already had your suspicions, didn't you? Indeed, you must have had doubts when you traversed Sector 1, a perfect replica of SR388...") Also, Neo Ridley and the Zebesians the main reason why you NEED Other M to be canon for Fusion to be canonically plausible, since Nintendo has officially stated that the Zebesians and Ridley were completely destroyed by Super's ending.

"It was the first joint mission I had been a part of since becoming a freelance bounty hunter." - Samus Uh, no it isn't, Samus. You frigging' led the entire Federation to war against the Planet Phaaze in Prime 3 for Christ's sake. Not only that, but even after that dumbassery the Federation pulled in Other M, Sakamoto still fucks up with his writing because the Federation tries again in Metroid Fusion! And Samus still works for them?! AFTER WHAT THEY DID IN OTHER M?! Metroid Other M makes absolutely zero sense. It absolutely contradicts the writing and lore of the entire Metroid franchise, not the character of Samus.
There's a few criticisms I have for this game that you didn't address, so I'll just point these things out here: Samus does NOTHING in this game. And when I say she does nothing, I mean she accomplishes none of her goals. Every one of her goals are carried out by other characters or outside forces. When Adam sacrifices himself, he tells Samus to stop MB, secure the final survivor, stop the Bottle Ship's engines, kill Ridley (since he escaped their first battle). Before this, Samus was already introduced to the Deleter subplot. MB is frozen by Madeline Bergman and destroyed by the Army. The final survivor was going to be taken by the Army, but Anthony secured her. Anthony stopped the Bottle Ship. And Ridley? He's killed by the Queen Metroid before you ever get the chance. Oh, but there's more! The Deleter, James Pierce (and yes, it is James Pierce. The only other possibly person was KG or whatever his name was - the token Asian character - but he's declared "missing" and since an unknown platoon member got fried... well, doesn't take a genius) is killed off screen by MB (during... a flashback that Samus was having, somehow. I don't know). Samus doesn't ever get any final confrontation or conclusion to this storyline, as Johnny mentioned, but this also means she didn't accomplish another thing. And furthermore! When talking to MB (before you know she's MB), she mentions Section Zero. When you first play this game, they build it up to you like it's where Mother Brain is held, like it's going to be the Tourian of this game (they literally call it a replica of Tourian). You're EXPECTING to destroy it. But you get there and Asshole-Adam shoots you in the back (never explaining why he shot you, and only brushing it off by saying "sorry for getting rough back there, but im a huge dickbag"). Adam destroys Sector Zero. So what did Samus herself accomplish in this game? She killed the Metroid Queen, that's it, and that just completely negates Adam's "selfless sacrifice", anyhow. And speaking of Adam's sacrifice, can we talk about how utterly awful Adam and Samus' relationship is? I understand bad character development, but I'm honestly worried that Samus is in some kind of abusive relationship. She's constantly trying to appease her father-figure, who only refers to her in a cold, distant manner, or just... shoots her in the fucking back for no reason (seriously, that scene is the worst part of the game - ten times worse than the PTSD scene everyone freaks out about). He not only restricts her weapons, which makes sense from the CO's point of view, but also her defensive and exploratory equipment which has no offensive capability. Why not let her use her Varia Suit? And furthermore, why not the grappling beam? At one point, Samus is chasing the Ridley-Monster, but can't because she isn't authorized her grapple beam. Samus is so hellbent on appeasing Adam that she nearly lets Anthony die (what if Adam didn't authorize the grapple beam? Was she gonna stand there and watch Anthony get killed? Apparently!) or let herself get hurt. I've heard how this is because obeying your CO in Japan is considered sacrosanct, and the fact she disobeyed him in that rushed flashback means she feels the need to make it up to him, but I call bull on that. Samus' personality was described clear as day in fusion - she doesn't like following rules. It states that exact sentence in the superior game this game continually copies. And this leads me to my most constructive critique - how this game could have been improved: It's simple, just add friction between Adam and Samus. Have Adam tell Samus to do something she doesn't want to do, or have Samus authorize items prematurely (like what she did with the screw attack, only have her do it when her daddy's around so she's actually being rebellious). Then when it comes to Adam's big sacrifice? Have Samus go in with Adam. They both go in, they realize they can't contain the Metroids, Adam let's Samus escape before it self destructs, thus letting both characters actually have a chance to reconnect and grow their relationship towards one of mutual respect, instead of submission and domination. Oh, and cut out all forced Nostalgia baiting. I love nostalgia, I love references to older games, but you're not going to make me feel good by including the best bosses from previous Metroid games without any goddamn reason. Ridley is fine, cause he's Ridley. But Nightmare and Phantoon? No, I am not an idiot and I'm not going to let you pander to my nostalgia for an easy pass unless you EARN it. Explain why Nightmare is there. Explain how they're creating Nightmare, give it background so that it's appearance in Fusion and Other M makes sense. If you want to see Nostalgia used right, look at A Link Between Worlds. That game was beautiful, it understood how to balance nostalgia and new ideas. Goddamn, this is an essay, but this game fires me up. Doesn't help that people defend this as a good game. It's not. If you like it, hey, everyone is entitled to like or dislike a game, but don't try and defend this as being on the same level as the Prime Trilogy or Super. This game was a disappointment, and as a game community we deserve *better* than this. Hopefully Nintendo will take all the criticism this game has received from fans and do some good with it.
RStaR RaptoR sounds like you dig the more interactive story/game. Super Metroid had such large and rich environment. The music, tone. The non-linear weapon progression. All that done without tons of dialogue.
I'm actually one of the people who does think that this is a good game. However, it is a TERRIBLE Metroid game. So, how can I enjoy it and still think it's good? I play it as an action game with a Metroid skin. Story's bad, so I ignore when replaying. Skippable cutscenes are wonderful. There's no emphasis on exploration, I play on hard mode where there's no reason to explore. Dodge roll is broken, hard mode has such low health that the game can be challenging at points (especially the Ridley fight). I also happen to be one of the few people who doesn't mind the first person mode. Okay, my defense of what I like out of the way, I can most certainly agree with most (if not all) of what you said in your essay. If Nintendo had done certain things (like you stated) this would have been a good Metroid game. But it is merely a fun action game with a Metroid skin. When I want mindless shooting fun, I go to this game (I'm over Call of Duty). When I want to play a Metroid game, I play an actual Metroid game (Super, Prime Trilogy).

For those who don't know how Ridley came back, here's how. When you kill Ridley in Super Metroid, small particles of him land on Samus' Power Suit, same goes the baby Metroid , and as the scientists were using the baby Metroid's DNA to clone Metroids (don't know why they keep doing this) they accidently cloned Ridley but is in his juvenile form, so the scientists had no clue where the fuck this thing came from and put it in some type of bio-room with other aliens, as one of the scientists enters the room Ridley Jr. kills him.

13:30 Fun Fact: so this is more a failure of the Japanese to English translation but in the Japanese version it is made very clear that Samus is going through the fire area and taking damage out of spite because Adam hasn't "authorized" the varia suit, she knows it wouldn't hurt anything to use it but after being told under no uncertain terms to not use any of her powers unless authorized and so out of spite just tanks the damage until Adam relents and authorizes it's use.
No, Metroid Other M is just dogshit in any language. Stop trying to justify the horridness of this game. Having Samus take damage on purpose is just the stupidest thing ever and not at all like the character we played in all those other games.

Funny thing is, a simple request and the right scripting could have solved this in a flash before Samus even reached the hot areas of the game. No need for all the pointless stuff. Have the game programmed and scripted to have Samus respectfully request the Varia Suit and explain that the area is too hot without the Varia Suit's abilities. Adam immediately catches on and allows Samus to use the her suits anti heat abilities without delay. Much better than the stupid writing and scripting, waiting until the boss battle to activate her anti heat abilities.

Metroid Prime / Metroid = Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope: It takes inspiration from various sources but its also pretty unique and revolutionary. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes / Metroid 2 The Return of Samus = Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back: Darker and more ambitious than the original but it still feels familiar. Metroid Prime 3 Corruption / Super Metroid = Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi: Bigger and more epic than its predecessors, and it provides a satisfactory conclusion to its series. Metroid Prime Hunters = Star Wars Expanded Universe: It has most of the charm of the main series although it doesn´t have the same level of quality, buts its okay because it doesn´t really need to, Its mostly a way to expand the lore of its series. Metroid Other M = Star Wars Episode I the Phantom Menace: You can tell that it had a bigger budget than its predecessors and that a lot of talented people put a lot of work on it but some questionable design choices prevent it from reaching its full potential.

It's funny how this game makes a lot of contradictions to the series. In Prime 3 Samus is a respected legend in the galactic federation and in this game they treat her like a rookie. Adam says that he would research Samus powers in order to authorize then, Samus hello? you use all those abilities in super metroid she knows them well, so what's this research crap? The Ridley scene Is it just me or the sectors felt generic? I mean is only forest, ice and lava and there are only 3 of them, Metroid Fusion (a GBA game) had 6 sectors (more than a wii game) with more personality and more non-linear.

Even if the manga was cannon is just a visual novel adaptation of the first metroid game, so the story in Metroid (NES)/ Zero Mission and the manga is the same. 3. So even with the manga as cannon material there's still the prime series and the other Metroid titles that follow it (Prime 1 to Super Metroid) in wich Samus has grown as a character overcoming her fears and faced much menacing threats than the original Metroid (Phazon, Dark Samus/Metroid Prime, the ing, enchanced Mother Brain,etc.). 4.Meaning that even with the manga in mind the story in other m still doesn't makes any sense wathsoever, because it ignores the character progression of Samus tha happened in all the games. 5.There's even a panel in the manga in wich Samus says to Ridley that she isn't afraid of him anymore and blast the bastard into oblivion (for the first time). 6. Any way you look at it even with spinoff material other m script is one of the worse ever in a videogame.

Part of the problem is that Other M retcons Samus' character as a trained professional. She kills things almost instinctively. It's similar to how soldiers are conditioned to handle extremely stressful, life-and-death situations. Every time Samus has met and fought Ridley, save for Metroid 1/Zero Mission, she assumed he was dead. Every time, she handled the stress of seeing him again so that she could kill him. If she was ever distracted/panicking while fighting Ridley, she'd be dead by now.
Looking back, he was really too generous with that score. I personally would give it about a 5/10 (_perhaps_ a 5.5/10). The game's average, and that's the long and short. There are good elements and there is fun to be had, but it feels like for every one element it did right, it did another element wrong.
It seems to be an alright game by itself. Smooth graphics, some cool combat and finishers, but along with some stupid pixel hunting adventure game crap, and some bland voice acting. Its what this game did to samus's character and metroids formula why people hate it. Instead of a "6 '3, imposing, courageous badass who doesnt take shit from no one, we now got a "5 '7, scared, boring protaganist who takes orders from her man despite his orders being stupid.

She and lara croft were the last couple walls of defense remaining against all those elitist feminazis saying video games only represent males. XenoMorphic E Well when they did other m like that, it makes it an ok 3d platfomer game with the metroid theme slapped onto it. People judge it as a metroid game. And as an entry in that series, its not that great. The games super linear and doesnt have of the exploring and finding items aspect of the other metroids, and some of the main characters suuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Even as a game itself it has some big flaws, combats really easy with the dodge roll auto charging your shots, there are stupid explanations for how your weapons arent given to you right at the beginning, bad direction and stupid lack of explanations pop up occaisonally with how the game doesnt tell you when to use power bombs or how you cant use your varia suit in the heat section for some reason, theres bad pixel hunter crap reminds people of bad point and click games, and movement is clunky with the d pad.
Your so right. Metroid Prime knew how to use FPS the right way. But you know I wouldn't just want a Super Metroid with better graphics. I would want almost like a FF7 to FF7 remake. Well not that drastic but I would want a remake that makes Super Metroid ALMOST feel like a different game altogether. But seeing as how Nintendo doesn't give a crap about Metroid, I doubt we'll ever see something like that.

I asked my mom to get me this game over a year ago. Never regretted it, even though Hard Mode gave me trouble. Then again, if it didn't do so it wouldn't be living up to its name. This game did have some good music, such as the Ridley theme and the one that plays when you get a brief summary of what has happened so far when you load a file.
I'll just call it like I see it, Samus getting triggered in Other M doesn't make sense. Why? 1. Because of that cutscene alone: We see her as a panicked little girl, standing in front of Ridley - that seems to imply that she recalls him killing her parents; making it so much more fitting for their first battle in Metroid 1/Zero Mission. >it's because she thought she killed him for good in Super 2. She must've thought that he's done for in M1/ZM too, but then he came back in Prime (which would've been the best moment for her to get triggered over him being still alive). She finally did it in Super, but who's to say there wasn't some doubt left in the back of her mind, given how Ridley managed to return all the previous times? Of course, my second point rides on whether or not the Prime trilogy is canon (which it supposedly is not anymore), but the first still stands.
This was an honest review and well thought out. I respect your opinion, but I feel you were too generous with the final score. Other M is a 5 out of 10 at best.
leon thompson I'm hoping he reviews Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door soon. If he's planning on it, he'll wait till summer to do so. I remember the Super Mario RPG review all too well. He said he knows it's summer when he has a craving for RPGs.
I wouldn't mind another game in the same style as Other M just without the first person sections, awkward over the shoulder sections, and superfluous characters. Add in analog control and keep Samus silent. There is a good game in there. It's just bogged down by a bad story and poor design choices.

If I had only one suggestion, though... when you edit your videos, open the EQ on your voiceover track and cut at 7hz... it's where your S's are. It's not horrible, but hard on headphone users. This game is the worst. I seriously hope Nintendo writes this off as a spin off or non canon in the future. This game not only shits on the Prime Trilogy's established plot and back story (whichNintendo confirmed that Prime wasn't canon and never happened after this game was released) but also shits on Super Metroid and Fusion. What a pile of shit.
That, and I also miss Samus' height of 6'3". It was something that made her unique, even outside of her Power Suit. Other M retcons her to 5'7" IIRC, and Smash 4 has her on par with some of the taller females...if you include her heels (and the disparity between her Power Suit height and Zero Suit height might disturb some people).
I like it but they can't right it off unless the rebot everything after super metroid which there not gonna do and this gamed function was mostly story kinda how Zelda ocarina of time was mostly story until that became the main Zelda thing and jeez calm down a bit don't you think your being a little harsh
Can we agree that Nintendo should make a sequel after Metroid Fusion where the Federation places Samus as a bounty and hires bounty hunters to capture her dead or alive? Think what they could do with that!
Take it a step further and talk about the kind of internal strife, even civil war, taht could engulf the Federation if they declared the galaxy's greatest hero an outlaw. Now THAT"S an internal struggle befitting Samus Aran: loyalty and how to protect the galaxy when it is split in two (the Chozo did, after all, sort of bring her up for that). Having her pulled between two sides but never being beholden entirely to either's authority while trying to find the right path, that could be awesome. Also, could be a good opportunity for her to seek counsel with the Chozo (finding a means to communicate with them on their higher plane of existence/alternate dimension could be a major plot point) and as a result regain her Chozo Power Suit, symbolically freeing her from political ties (the Federation made her Fusion suit) and putting her on the path to settle things.
Well, if there was one thing Other M did right is explaining where the Federation got those frozen remains of Ridley that we found in the BSL since, you know, Ridley's corpse was basically vaporized at the end of Super Metroid. Oh and the cutscenes look really nice

I so wanna play this game again! I remember enjoying it but it seems like everyone else thinks it's a subpar Metroid experience that can burn in a dumpster fire...I will say though that your review was actually really good. You were pretty fair with the things that deserved praise as well as the criticisms of things you didn't enjoy. While I have no doubt that I like this game, appearently I have also forgotten a handful of things. You bring out some good points here. Why no familiar jingle when you pick up items? While I kinda like that they tried something different with Samus reusing her abilities beyond just losing them all at the start for the hundredth billionth time, I have to admit I found that Varia suit thing hilarious. It makes a strong case for why it's kinda dumb. However, I like the environments, the bosses are sic (except for MB), and you get more zero suit Samus. Look, I ain't saying it's on the level of the Prime games, but I do appreciate that they tried to do something with a narrative in a Metroid game. I dont dislike Samus's portrayal, at least not nearly to the degree everyone else seems to. I think this game deserves a second chance. If it ever got released on Switch with updated controls, I think people might at least find that it's a better game than they remember. I really suspect many didn't even play it all the way through. You did, and therefore your review is completely valid. Here's to hoping Metroid Dread will reignite the Metroid Shinespark!

3:13 Funnily enough, Adam's decision to unauthorize most of Samus' arsenal makes him look like an idiot. He only gave his reasoning for not using Power Bombs which make sense in-universe but it doesn't explain why didn't he only ban Power Bombs. They had zero idea what was on that ship and they easily could encountered something that would have slaughtered most of the Squad seeing as he limited Samus. It would be too late to authorize things when most of his men are dead after all.
it's funny because most of the control problems could have been solved by simply using the wiimote + nunchuk configuration. seriously, whoever thought using the sideways wiimote configuration for a 3d adventure game then flipping the wii-mote over every time you want to switch to 1st person view (while being COMPLETELY restrained from moving) was a good idea needs to die

I've always thought that it's because the fans of the series destroyed this game which made nintendo somewhat reluctant of making a new metroid game in fear that the fans will do nothing but rage all over again. Maybe i'm right, maybe not. Either way i think we can all agree that Nintendo should make a new Metroid game.
All i can say is that its about time Nintendo made another attempt at Metriod. i just hope its not a company that will go 1 step forward with graphics and 2 steps back with the decisions on this game. It took a while for a proper sequel to Kid Icarus and it was awesome for what it was
I'd really like to see another Metroid game with a fleshed out story, but only if Samus doesn't suck, the other characters don't suck, the voice-acting doesn't suck, and it remains consistent with the rest of the series. Also, it has to render Other M completely non-canon.

well the whole fetch quest and the ammo system and dreary atmosphere isnt everyone's cup of tea... but this is like, by definition, a TERRIBLE metroid game. this is like if i gave a mario fps a 7/10 for being "different".
I don't care what anyone says, this is a good game, even with a few flaws. However, Echoes is damn near flawless. I mean, what can one even say about that game that's even remotely derogatory. About the only complaint I ever hear is difficulty. The game's harder than the first one. Traversing Dark Aether is difficult. The Boost Guardian is tough...etc. If that's all anyone's got then it's an absolute masterpiece. I would very likely crown it as the best of the trilogy, which is extremely hard to do when the margin between them is smaller than the eye of a threading needle...
I know this is late, but given the long running 'non-vocal' Samus outside the grunts and slight screams of the prime voice actress, Samus having a voice will never reach the expectations of fans. It's like Link, Mario, and especially Donkey Kong. Giving Link a voice is like telling the players after all these years that their own personality is wrong. Mario has blurbs at best and very short sentences at worst (yes worst)... Why? Because the most of his voice we hear is from shouts of joy to grunts of pain (not unlike Samus). Now Donkey's father/grandfather Kong which was the original Kong in the Mario vs Donkey Kong series is very old and has most likely learned to speak the human language over the years; however, the others are still communicating with gorilla/monkey speech. The fact that Samus has a voice is nice, but the fact that the players are incredibly spoiled with their own interpretations from playing the same game(s) (Super Metroid) over and over again, no voice actress would be good enough, probably not even Tara Strong, as she's an EXCELLENT voice actress. The other problems are nitpicks from mostly the same source, their own interpretation. They have built up this image of Samus being silent and badass no matter what demons she's facing, including the murderer of her parents and extended family (Chozo). She's still human (despite Chozo and later Metroid DNA), and she still has a traumatic past that she constantly battles. The fact that her helmet hides any facial expressions she has, we can easily interpret the look upon seeing Ridley as fear for a few seconds before she starts blasting at him in anger, mainly because she's still trying to get revenge because he won't stay dead. In this game, he's a clone, and he's looking not unlike the day he killed her parents, instead of the ever changing form (Meta-Ridley included if you so choose) he has in the other games (including fusion which this game CAN explain a few things for the BSL). This game would have been better received as a movie, if only because we would receive a backstory and a progression that's understandable in a few hours of movie vs. gameplay. Another problem is that besides Samus herself, only two other voices have any impact on her character as a whole through this game (yes, Anthony counts despite in being in Fusion). If I could do a video review of great quality, not unlike Chuggaaconroy's skills at it, I would definitely bring a new look at this game for ALL to see. Hopefully the hatred for this game would diminish, even just a little bit.
KidSnivy69 Well, true, but there are so many choices to choose from, but those three came first... so, yeah... Also, some of the others ALREADY have voices and people are acceptable with those performances. (Yes, Sonic counts as well! LOLZ!!) I hate that people rag on a voice just because it's a voice. There is so many times that I notice it and it's very disturbing how fans can be so 'high-horsed' about it.
I would totally read fanfics of various Characters in leadership positions who have been shown to be competent in their respective series reacting to Other M and Adam's decision making skills.
What would've been cool would be if Samus had her upgrades from the start, and you could use them all at any time, but the game doesn't tell you until you beat the game for the first time. If you use them, Adam will scold you, but the only thing that changes are the cutscenes. For example, instead of suffering from PTSD in the Ridley scene, she could become angry and start recklessly shooting it, only snapping out when Anthony gets attacked. The ending would also be changed. Instead of her holding Adam's helmet and mourning over him, she put on her suit, shoots the helmet with a charge shot and flies off. She says nothing. A satisfying ending to an optional alternate story.
Every time I see someone criticizing the game for its authorization thing, I say "Look closer." I was playing the game recently, and I noticed a few things. For example, shortly after Samus exits her ship and starts walking around, a small text box on the side of the screen states, "Samus has decided not to use missiles or bombs until Adam authorizes them." Meaning that Samus herself decided to do this. That's her decision. Furthermore, the reason why Adam is hesitant to authorize weapons is because Adam is simply doing his job as a Commanding Officer, whose very job is to authorize things only when absolutely necessary, so as to ensure the safety of all personnel. I hope this cleared up a few things.
lemar graham That I'm not sure. Maybe Adam thought Samus would be alright, so he waited to enable the Varia Suit, but when he saw the giant lava monster, that's probably what finally got him to do it. Not too sure about the other items though.

This is exactly why having a *game* revolve too much around it's story is a terrible thing. While Samus was stupid enough to turn off all of her goodies over the whim of a single ass hole...*I* wouldn't have. Which takes *me* the *player* out of the experience and completely breaks the most basic sense of immersion needed for a game. Especially in a series that has always valued player freedom. Because this game is part of a series, you can't just not compare it to the others. Despite Samus actually being her own character, the way the other games handle her make her so immersive that *you, the player* feel like Samus. Whenever I play any other game in the series, I feel like it's me exploring. I feel like it's me in the armor. I feel like it's me in danger. You say whatever you want to about how the rest of the games handle this, yes, she usually looses her upgrades in stupid ways...but at least it's completely out of her, and by correlation, *your* control. In Metroid Prime you aren't left in any scenario that allows you to say "this is complete horseshit, if it was me I'd just use that right now*. Granted, I know this game is supposed to be cinematic....but this is why making a cinematic Metroid is just completely dumb...Making a cinematic game in general is dumb. If you want to ingest entertainment that allows you to helplessly watch as the character you're *supposed* to connect with does a bunch of stupid things that you wouldn't...Watch a movie..This basic level of control is why games exist to begin with. To *let you experience. Not watch.* *TL;DR*- It doesn't make a single shred of difference if Samus chose to obey Adam...It's still retarded and reprehensible. Limitations in video games should always be either be a direct choice from the player or circumstances outside of the protagonists control to preserve the must basic amount of immersion required for a *game*.

in case you were actually inquiring, yes, story IS important! Granted, it's ok to have a game with NO story, but if a game entertains a BAD story, it actually detracts from the game as well as the series. As for character, we didn't have assumptions. We were already given the character of Samus in previous games, and she was portrayed as a "bad ass" bounty hunter. However, having her appear majorly emotionally fragile isn't a bad thing, UNLESS it contradicts her ALREADY present character.
Good to see Johnny had a counter measure in place for the "Screw Attack" echo in this video by means of the buzzer sound and the "NOT AUTHORIZED" banner. The Space Jump and Screw Attack are two of four abilities that Samus will activate without permission. The Gravity Suit comes shortly after due to the situation that required it. Last but not least, Samus uses a Power Bomb to take out the Queen Metroid. The beast's insides absorb most of the blast though.
5:59 Chronologicaly, before this game Samus has encountered Ridley 4 times (if you played Metroid Samus returns instead of Metroid 2 or AM2R then it's 5 times)

When I first saw the ending of metroid other M, I actually was feeling pretty emotional at it, especially with the music and what is going on. It's even more emotional then the real ending after finding adam's helmet.

This was a really good review. This has probably already been said, although you can't move in first person view, I'm not too sure, but, I think you can dodge by flicking the wii remote in whatever direction when your visor glows yellow.
I would imagine the reason the game doesn't inform you that you can use Power Bombs during the Queen Metroid fight is because Adam is dead, so he's not around anymore to authorize you to use your own tools and shit. Still, the game COULD and SHOULD have let you know that you could access the Power Bombs regardless, because after the whole 'authorization' fiasco players would likely still be waiting to be authorized on that shit.
That is what I thought after the fight, But that shit and having to aim at Mother Brain woman whatever the hell xD I needed to look up a guide online, there are some really unnecessary moments that halt progress in the game sadly

I think you were too kind on the score and story in particular, it's not just "mediocre", it's incredibly bad on many levels. Not only does it fall apart the second you think about any of its plot points for a minute, drops entire sub-plots like the Eraser, contradicts nearly every Metroid games not even counting Prime games, is a lazy obvious rehash of Fusion for the most part, it's above all a total character assassination when it comes to Samus. Dull robot voice aside, she's so meek and slow witted in the cut-scenes it's hard to imagine that whiny girl chose the life of a solo bounty hunter. Prime Samus has the body language of a predator. Other M Samus looks awkward, especially with most characters towering above her. Hell, if you pay attention, Samus locks her power-ups HERSELF, before Adam asks her to. She's so sub-servient that she anticipated what Adam would ask of her. Technically, it's Samus' fault if your Varia suit is unplugged, Adam NEVER told her to remove anything but her weapons. And at the end of the day - Ridley dies off screen, the deleter dies off screen, the metroid lab is destroyed by Adam, Mother Brain gets killed by the Federation, and Anthony steps in to save Madeline. Samus does jack. Shit. You could say that she helped a lot, but Anthony's squad had to save her bacon at least 3 times in the process, it's pathetic. Her only big score, the metroid queen, wasn't really a big part of Mother Brain's dumb plan, and you could argue that she only killed it with the help of Anthony. Mother Brain's plan is also ultimately pathetic, she wants to crash an unarmed, unshielded space station into a GF colony... what? Even without Samus or the rogue GF squadron's intervention, the Bottle Ship would have been blown to smithereens by any gunship stationed near MB's target. As in, this was all for nothing. Adam died for little reason and Samus was. Not. Needed. tl;dr Other M's story is an active detriment to this game, and it's hard to ignore, unless you don't know anything about Metroid or completely turn your brain off the whole way through and never watch the Theater Mode that highlights how bullshit the whole thing is. I'd argue it deserves to remove around 3 points out of ten from its score, it's that bad.
Wow... I just figured it out. Metroid Other M "M . O. M." That's weak. This game did have a lot of problems. I was happy to unlock Hard mode but guess what they did??? They took ALL of the missile tanks AND the energy tanks upgrades out! 70% of Metroid is about exploration! What a fuck up.
tyler ray I think you take more damage. The game is harder with no energy tanks at all. But I would have rather taken more damage and been able to explore and get that satisfying feeling of finding item.
Being an individual who owns and has played every Metroid game to a pulp (unfortunately even Other M) I feel like Other M had no business being a Metroid title. "Who should we let handle our strong female protagonist for a new Metroid game?" "I know! The swell gentlemen who made Tits Simulator (and the newer Ninja Gaiden games I suppose) their views on gender politics would never impact the game!" I feel they spent more time sculpting Samus' ass for all the many parts she takes a hit and drops her suit than they did making the game. They didn't make anything new, most every Metroid game has new and unique power ups, or at least has their own spin on (Ice, Plasma, and Wave beams in Prime). Other M was a huge disappointment for me; nothing good stood out to me and I only remember the bad.
Just because a person faced their fear doesnt mean they are completely over it. You honestly can't count the early metroid games because there was no dialogue whatsoever to even know how Samus was feeling fighting Ridley

Thats like saying none of the older NES Megaman games happened because of "no dialog". It still happened no matter what you or anyone else says. There was no reason at all for samus to be sacred at this point

Don't know why everyone bitches about voice acting. Most of it is monologue in her head. He want her to freak out in her head and show emotion to please the viewer even though it is just her thought process? I loved it and thought it was spot on for what they were going for. Next she is a bounty hunter, even Boba Fett does not use weapons when told not to. Like in Empire Strikes Back. He is told no disintegration, he nods okay. And Samus even jokes about this in the game when she starts using the weapons with out his permission. And Adam lets her use the weapons she has when she needs them for other things besides blowing a hole in the ship. Like the grapple beam, the second he sees Anthony in trouble he tells Samus to use it. Yes she gets freaked out by Ridley, he died when a planet blow up, if you played the game you would know this as she lets you know though the thoughts in her head that you discredit so much. So seeing a CLONE of the beast that killed your parents, and you thought was dead and not knowing it was a clone, would be damn freaky if you ask me. And she only does that for a sec, as she still fights and defeats him right there. And you are assuming she was just fine when she fought Ridley but you don't know that she does not have self narration in those other games like you do in this one. And you had the Ridley fight way to dark turn the brightness up and you might be able to see. Your footage looked nothing like mine when I played.
It's doesn't seem like you've played the other games. If you haven't you shouldn't talk. Because if you really break it down only Metroid II and III are able to logically able to work with this title. The plot holes are so bad that the first game can't fit into this game (They changed how here suit works or she really couldn't concentrate until after the Chozo test). Some of this stuff that I'm going to use stuff from other games. If you haven't played them then you really have no place to talk. Anyways this is why you are wrong. What's wrong with the voice acting is it's too monotone all the time. It feels like she has no interest in what's going on, so why should the player be interested. Even if she spoke in an calm and collected tone, like lets say Atticus Finch. It would be way more interesting and sound like she's invested in what's going on. Not only does it fail to get me interested those scenes drag on way too long and are unskippable. I'll excepted she decided to tag along with Adam's team. Which means you have to listen to him. I will not except him taking the useful non-combat abilities: Varia suit, Grapple Beam, Gravity Suit, and Space Jump (without the screw attack). Also your first visit to to the PYR ripoff, you are sent there without your varia suit, when you have it already. It makes Adam and Samus look bad. Makes Adam look like he's doing this in spite, because she left his command. Samus looks dumb/suicidal, because apparently "The Baby" dying makes her depressed enough to to die, unless Adam says she can use life saving gear. If she lost her gear that's one thing (and maybe a fun challenge), but she already has it. Then she could have perused "The Mystery Creature" and gotten it taken care of early. But nope Adam didn't Authorize it, doesn't that sound stupid. The speed Booster and Shine spark you have to go on a boring, +20 minutes long, circle. When you finally have no other means of progressing, it is finally authorized. When you could have progressed starting out with it in the first place. After that, the Wave Beam, You get to a spot where using the Wave Beam is needed to progress, but Adam stays silent. So you head back and you are forced into a kill box. The only way you can stop your attackers is by using the Wave Beam. Adam takes his sweat time radioing you on this (maybe because he expected Samus to be smart enough save herself and explain to him later). Lastly, she could have just immediately used her "Gravity Feature" right after Adam died. Ridley you defeat him so many times in the series that it doesn't matter if she thought he was dead. she's defeated him 7 times (if you beat him at the space station in Super Metroid). So what if Ridley killed her parents by this point, she's the strongest bounty hunter in the galaxy. It's her job not to let this stuff effect her, or she would have gotten corrupted in Prime 3. If they wanted to do that break down, Zero Mission would be the place to do it. Even though her character hasn't been fleshed out much, I get the feeling (when it takes place) that she would get pissed like Luke was confronting Vader (after taunting him) on the death star in episode VI. she would be cruel and force him into submission. Like Luke just beating Vader into submission and pounding on him. In Prime one, the first encounter, her body language subtle, but makes her look pissed. Her stopping and clenching her fist with a look of anger. In Prime 3, she dives down trying to get extra shots in to make sure he's dead. Instead of maneuvering to slow herself down to get more time to find way to survive. Samus doesn't get choked up in the Prime Trilogy at Metroid Prime/Dark Samus or Phazon. When she knows that this stuff killed the race that raised her and her bounty hunter friends. I hope you realize how wrong you are
Your Boba Fett analogy doesn't work at all...because that's a *movie*. When you watch Empire, you aren't expected to take the role of Boba or even be remotely immersed in his character. Metroid on the other hand...Is a game...How am I expected to be immersed in the game, feel like I'm in the world...If I don't even have control over my avatar?...If I wanted to watch a story unfold and have no control over the characters decision making process, then I'd just watch a movie or tv show. In every other game in the series, when you loose upgrades it's due to circumstances completely outside of her control, which puts limitations on the player without breaking immersion. In Prime, you can't explore Magmor Caverns in depth because of the heat and because the player does not possess the equipment required to traverse the heat...Not because Samus doesn't want to. You the player have to physically go get the Varia Suit, and once you do, it's open to you as much as you want. Samus already possessing a piece of equipment and not letting the player use it because *she doesn't want to* is terrible game design. That same thought can be applied to her thoughts and emotions. Samus only exists as a conduit for the player. Nothing more than a player's vehicle into that world. Why should she be freaking out over Ridley when both her and I have already kicked his ass enough times for him to be nothing more than an inconvenience? It doesn't make any sense and quite frankly, people don't play games to see Samus's reaction to Ridley...They play games so *they* can react to Ridley. Samus having a mental breakdown to an enemy that we've both destroyed several times throughout the series at this point only serves as a means to kick the player out of the experience. If this was a movie, that'd be okay...In a game, that's completely unacceptable. Because of the way games work I have more attachment to my nameless prisoner in Skyrim than I could ever have to this cinematic version of Samus...That's bad *game* design.

I already typed this out once, but more people should see why Nintendo shouldn't make more games like other m. These are just the plot holes that make it impossible for it to be connected to the Metroid series. Not plots in that contradict the the game itself. "There are lots plot holes in this game. Like when she says this is the first federation mission since she left Adam. That goes against prime 3, when she led the federation to war. Prime 2 and Hunters were directly involved with the federation. Next when has it been established that mother brain has telepathy or you need telepathy to control metroids. Also why would the federation use a Chozo experiment, that went Skynet on it's creators. Especially when the federation has Aurora units, a successful federation version of mother brain (from prime 3). The Aurora units control stuff on a network. Which the federation could do what the Enclave (Fallout) did with the Death-Claws. They strapped mind control helmets on them. So the federation could have connected these mind controlled metroids to the Aurora network. This game completely rips off metroid fusion. Since the game is so similar to fusion, a smart person would recognize that the situation is similar. So it shouldn't be a surprise in Fusion that the federation is experimenting on metroids. And if it's not a surprise I think she might try to do something sooner than at the end mission in Fusion. The Federation was trying to arrest Samus in end of other M. We know that there are more corrupt people in the federation, because of metroid Fusion. So the Federation is a corrupt government after Super Metroid. And a corrupt government would make Samus a criminal and cover it up. And Metroid Fusion ends with Samus being a fugitive or running from the law. So it would only make sense that other M ends with her being a fugitive and the federation trying to cover it up. And if she's a fugitive in other M, Metroid Fusion could not have happened. Metroid Fusion established that metroids could only get passed their larval stage in SR388. Because that was the only environment that worked for metroids. In Metroids Fusion they replicate the environment. So why didn't other M do that and how is there a metroid queen on the Bottle Ship. It's impossible for there to be A metroid queen on the Bottle Ship according to Metroid Fusion. If Samus concentrates here suit on, off, energy, and missiles. (Metroid Zero Mission is where Samus' suit is some what explained) Then why didn't she do that in Metroid Zero Mission, instead of wondering around in her zero suit towards the end. This suit was made by the Chozo. The Chozo are an enlightened race, with unmatched technology (except the Aurora units). So no one could have altered the suit. So concentrating her suit doesn't make sense. So Metroid Zero Mission couldn't of happened. And if Metroid Zero Mission didn't happen, Metroid Prime could not have happened. Or Samus just likes making things unnecessarily difficult like Adam in other M. Also there is the obvious Ridley plot hole. In she's beaten Ridley 7 times (if you beat him in the space station in Super Metroid). So what if she though he was dead or him killing her parents. She doesn't freak out in Zero Mission, so why now. In Prime is subtle, but on the space pirate ship you see her stop, clench her fist with a look of anger. In Prime 3 instead of trying to slow her descent, she dives down to make sure Ridley doesn't come come back. So it's more in her character to be pissed at the sight of Ridley, than to be scared of Ridley. By now it's stupid to assume that Ridley is dead. He's always coming back. So the only games that could fit into the same timeline as other M is: Metroid 2 return of Samus and Super Metroid. There are more plot holes that I'm not mentioning right now."
This game is a piece of art, team ninja showed a huge respect to the mechanics of the original serie (metroid & super metroid) and managed to mix an interesting combination between retro and modern gameplay. I really liked the story (even if it was kinda average with bad voice acting), the creative camera angles and the replay value. P.S: and yes, I've also played and liked the Metroid Prime series but I'm not a narrow-minded idiot who criticizes another type of gameplay just because nintendo tried something else other than FPS.

That's the whole point; it has nothing to do with the prime series but with the original "side-scrolling" type, and yet again the fandom decided that from now on any metroid must be FPS and put this one into their shitlist. And for such behaviour you get Federation Force from nintendo with love. The only part I agree with you is about exploration which is kinda cheap in comparison to the previous metroid games, but again it's not a reason to flame Other M. I'd rather sending my feedback to nintendo hopefully they'd bring back the traditional exploration for the next metroid (if there'll be a next one).
Having no problem with the D-pad movement, I think it's a good idea ,but for the other parts of the control scheme.....yeeeah those Famicom nostalgia has to be blamed. This game seriously need the classic controller option imo.

Johnny Probably never figured it out when he made this reveiw, but you are able to dodge attacks while in first person missle mode. One of the great misteps of this game's beginning tutorial was that they never showed you that you can do this.

I really think you're underestimating exactly how bad Super Metroid was.
Samus is basically having the emotional equivallent of Cthulu had the Flu because literally her entire life went down the shitter in Super Metroids, sans her revenge against the Pirates, and now she just learned even that is pointless and she's essensially done not a goddamn thing with her life pertaining to any of her goals (The Phazon Crisis was more focused on the Space Pirates; the actual destroying phazon was simply a consequence of fighting the space pirates to her).
You brushing it off as "she can kill him again' is EXACTLY THE PROBLEM.
What's probably running through Samus's mind is she can kill Ridley again, and again, and again, and she will never be rid of him, meaning every goddamn thing she does is pointless.
And not just that alone, but Samus realizing the events of Super Metroid were a complete and utter failure and everything she worked towards was irrevocably destroyed.
Top that on top of the Killer's Remorse that drove her to even set Super into motion in the first place, and you have what AN ACTUAL PSYCHOLOGIST WHO LOOKED AT THE GAME said is a completely predictible reaction to the immense stress, guilt, and hopelessness she felt at that moment, things which all combined under THAT level are bound to cause a PTSD like mental shutdown.
We havent seen all aspects of Samus's character, all we've seen is what she's like when everything is under her control. Sure, a few omlettes may have been broken across her journies, but Samus was confident in herself that she had her goal in sight, and that she could very much reach that goal with ease.
here, the situation has spiraled completely out of her control and no matter what she did in Super Metroid, she failed regardless. the realization she may never reach her goal, the belief she can never kill Ridley, never reach her goal, which took not only her parents but, in a roundabout way, the Baby Metroid, caused a mental shutdown- a heroic BSOD.
As for Samus's known character, she really has none. Samus was essensially the player for the entire duration of MP1 and 2, with no real emotion being shown, and the fact she's hopped the fuck up on Phazon in MP3 draws what little characterization she has in that game into question later on.
The only reliable source of characterization we had was in Fusion, which, playing back to back with Other M, seems eerily remicient of Other M- inner monologues and all.
Regardless of all of this, Samus's characterization is even questionable in Other M considering the intense emotional stress she is under; she shows symptoms of mild depression in my opinion.
I really wonder if we can blame Team Ninja for the timeframe; I imagine if they developed a game taking place shortly after Prime 3, and Tanebe was involved in the production, Samus would have a different presentation.
You make Samus sound like a gun happy psychopath, she shows quite a bit of restraint in many instances in Prime 2 and 3. She hesitates to shoot Dark Samus in two of their encounters, hesitates to shoot U-Mos (thankfully), hesitates to shoot both Rundas and Ghor, and, outside of the Prime games, spared the Infant Metroid which was DIRECTLY DEFYING the Federation. She SHOULD have shot it if she was following orders, but instead she spared it feeling guilt and brought it to be researched at Ceres. So no, if "shooting it is a valid option", it isnt her first fucking instinct. We aren't talking about a gun happy lunatic here.
In other words, your characterization is wrong to begin with, Other M not required to contradict it.

That misconception is the result of translating from Japanese to Spanish to English. He considers Prime a gaiden series, and he has confirmed a few things:
Phazon is completely obliterated from the entire universe after Prime 3
Metroid Prime (AKA Dark Samus) was killed for real by Samus at the end of Prime 3
Any 3D games that take place chronologically after Prime 3 would NOT bear the Prime moniker but instead have a new subtitle (either he went back on this or Federation Force indeed takes place prior to prime 3)
The sequel to Metroid Prime 3 will have Sylux as the antagonist. Sylux was also the pilot of the ship at the end of Prime 3, official confirmation from Tanebe
Now, what he DOES NOT consider canon is the manga. It's like Metal Gear Portable Ops is; it's selectively canon, since it's a reteling of ZM with non canon elements like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb following Samus to Zebes. In fact I'd say anything past the 3rd chapter is probably exclusively non canon.
What IS canon about the manga are Samus's backstory (K2-L), Old Bird, and Grey Voice. However, these were elements created by the Super Metroid nintendo power comic and were NOT the brainchildren of the Manga. Additionally, having the Metroids created during Samus's childhood would contradict their implicit antiquity in the Prime series. Which, during an interview concerning Federation Force, they AGAIN reiterated is canon.

Old Bird, Grey Voice, Samus's backstory, and possibly a form of PTSD are holdovers in the main canon. However, since nothing after the 3rd chapter at latest can be even remotely integrated into the main canon as is, how her PTSD is manifested can therefore be radically altered.
Instead of being triggered by the sight of Ridley in general it is instead triggered by the seeming impossibility of his resurrection and the realization that Super Metroid was a failure in every respect, and that the Infant Metroid may have died in vain. She does nnot react similarly to Neo Ridley because she already understands what happened and rationalized it in her head, as well as coming to grips with the general concept. Additionally, she saw Ridley MUCH earlier on in the game, so she knew Ridley's revival via X Parasite was plausible. In fact, Adam ALLUDES to the fact Samus was savvy to the Metroid and cloning conspiracy (he says, quote, "But you already had your suspicions, didn't you? Indeed, you must have had doubts when you traversed Sector 1, a perfect replica of SR388...")
Also, Neo Ridley and the Zebesians the main reason why you NEED Other M to be canon for Fusion to be canonically plausible, since Nintendo has officially stated that the Zebesians and Ridley were completely destroyed by Super's ending.

And Samus still works for them?! AFTER WHAT THEY DID IN OTHER M?! Metroid Other M makes absolutely zero sense. It absolutely contradicts the writing and lore of the entire Metroid franchise, not the character of Samus.

There's a few criticisms I have for this game that you didn't address, so I'll just point these things out here:
Samus does NOTHING in this game. And when I say she does nothing, I mean she accomplishes none of her goals. Every one of her goals are carried out by other characters or outside forces. When Adam sacrifices himself, he tells Samus to stop MB, secure the final survivor, stop the Bottle Ship's engines, kill Ridley (since he escaped their first battle). Before this, Samus was already introduced to the Deleter subplot.
MB is frozen by Madeline Bergman and destroyed by the Army. The final survivor was going to be taken by the Army, but Anthony secured her. Anthony stopped the Bottle Ship. And Ridley? He's killed by the Queen Metroid before you ever get the chance.
Oh, but there's more! The Deleter, James Pierce (and yes, it is James Pierce. The only other possibly person was KG or whatever his name was - the token Asian character - but he's declared "missing" and since an unknown platoon member got fried... well, doesn't take a genius) is killed off screen by MB (during... a flashback that Samus was having, somehow. I don't know). Samus doesn't ever get any final confrontation or conclusion to this storyline, as Johnny mentioned, but this also means she didn't accomplish another thing.
And furthermore! When talking to MB (before you know she's MB), she mentions Section Zero. When you first play this game, they build it up to you like it's where Mother Brain is held, like it's going to be the Tourian of this game (they literally call it a replica of Tourian). You're EXPECTING to destroy it. But you get there and Asshole-Adam shoots you in the back (never explaining why he shot you, and only brushing it off by saying "sorry for getting rough back there, but im a huge dickbag"). Adam destroys Sector Zero.
So what did Samus herself accomplish in this game? She killed the Metroid Queen, that's it, and that just completely negates Adam's "selfless sacrifice", anyhow.
And speaking of Adam's sacrifice, can we talk about how utterly awful Adam and Samus' relationship is? I understand bad character development, but I'm honestly worried that Samus is in some kind of abusive relationship. She's constantly trying to appease her father-figure, who only refers to her in a cold, distant manner, or just... shoots her in the fucking back for no reason (seriously, that scene is the worst part of the game - ten times worse than the PTSD scene everyone freaks out about). He not only restricts her weapons, which makes sense from the CO's point of view, but also her defensive and exploratory equipment which has no offensive capability. Why not let her use her Varia Suit? And furthermore, why not the grappling beam? At one point, Samus is chasing the Ridley-Monster, but can't because she isn't authorized her grapple beam.
Samus is so hellbent on appeasing Adam that she nearly lets Anthony die (what if Adam didn't authorize the grapple beam? Was she gonna stand there and watch Anthony get killed? Apparently!) or let herself get hurt. I've heard how this is because obeying your CO in Japan is considered sacrosanct, and the fact she disobeyed him in that rushed flashback means she feels the need to make it up to him, but I call bull on that. Samus' personality was described clear as day in fusion - she doesn't like following rules. It states that exact sentence in the superior game this game continually copies.
And this leads me to my most constructive critique - how this game could have been improved:
It's simple, just add friction between Adam and Samus. Have Adam tell Samus to do something she doesn't want to do, or have Samus authorize items prematurely (like what she did with the screw attack, only have her do it when her daddy's around so she's actually being rebellious). Then when it comes to Adam's big sacrifice? Have Samus go in with Adam. They both go in, they realize they can't contain the Metroids, Adam let's Samus escape before it self destructs, thus letting both characters actually have a chance to reconnect and grow their relationship towards one of mutual respect, instead of submission and domination.
Oh, and cut out all forced Nostalgia baiting. I love nostalgia, I love references to older games, but you're not going to make me feel good by including the best bosses from previous Metroid games without any goddamn reason. Ridley is fine, cause he's Ridley. But Nightmare and Phantoon? No, I am not an idiot and I'm not going to let you pander to my nostalgia for an easy pass unless you EARN it. Explain why Nightmare is there. Explain how they're creating Nightmare, give it background so that it's appearance in Fusion and Other M makes sense. If you want to see Nostalgia used right, look at A Link Between Worlds. That game was beautiful, it understood how to balance nostalgia and new ideas.
Goddamn, this is an essay, but this game fires me up. Doesn't help that people defend this as a good game. It's not. If you like it, hey, everyone is entitled to like or dislike a game, but don't try and defend this as being on the same level as the Prime Trilogy or Super. This game was a disappointment, and as a game community we deserve *better* than this. Hopefully Nintendo will take all the criticism this game has received from fans and do some good with it.
RStaR RaptoR sounds like you dig the more interactive story/game. Super Metroid had such large and rich environment. The music, tone. The non-linear weapon progression. All that done without tons of dialogue.
I'm actually one of the people who does think that this is a good game. However, it is a TERRIBLE Metroid game. So, how can I enjoy it and still think it's good? I play it as an action game with a Metroid skin. Story's bad, so I ignore when replaying. Skippable cutscenes are wonderful. There's no emphasis on exploration, I play on hard mode where there's no reason to explore. Dodge roll is broken, hard mode has such low health that the game can be challenging at points (especially the Ridley fight). I also happen to be one of the few people who doesn't mind the first person mode. Okay, my defense of what I like out of the way, I can most certainly agree with most (if not all) of what you said in your essay. If Nintendo had done certain things (like you stated) this would have been a good Metroid game. But it is merely a fun action game with a Metroid skin. When I want mindless shooting fun, I go to this game (I'm over Call of Duty). When I want to play a Metroid game, I play an actual Metroid game (Super, Prime Trilogy).

For those who don't know how Ridley came back, here's how. When you kill Ridley in Super Metroid, small particles of him land on Samus' Power Suit, same goes the baby Metroid , and as the scientists were using the baby Metroid's DNA to clone Metroids (don't know why they keep doing this) they accidently cloned Ridley but is in his juvenile form, so the scientists had no clue where the fuck this thing came from and put it in some type of bio-room with other aliens, as one of the scientists enters the room Ridley Jr. kills him.

Fun Fact: so this is more a failure of the Japanese to English translation but in the Japanese version it is made very clear that Samus is going through the fire area and taking damage out of spite because Adam hasn't "authorized" the varia suit, she knows it wouldn't hurt anything to use it but after being told under no uncertain terms to not use any of her powers unless authorized and so out of spite just tanks the damage until Adam relents and authorizes it's use.
More along the line of him ordering her to activate it but yeah. I wonder how different the game would have been if the translation was more accurate.

Adam immediately catches on and allows Samus to use the her suits anti heat abilities without delay.

Metroid Prime / Metroid = Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope: It takes inspiration from various sources but its also pretty unique and revolutionary.
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes / Metroid 2 The Return of Samus = Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back: Darker and more ambitious than the original but it still feels familiar.
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption / Super Metroid = Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi: Bigger and more epic than its predecessors, and it provides a satisfactory conclusion to its series.
Metroid Prime Hunters = Star Wars Expanded Universe: It has most of the charm of the main series although it doesn´t have the same level of quality, buts its okay because it doesn´t really need to, Its mostly a way to expand the lore of its series.
Metroid Other M = Star Wars Episode I the Phantom Menace: You can tell that it had a bigger budget than its predecessors and that a lot of talented people put a lot of work on it but some questionable design choices prevent it from reaching its full potential.

It's funny how this game makes a lot of contradictions to the series.
In Prime 3 Samus is a respected legend in the galactic federation and in this game they treat her like a rookie.
Adam says that he would research Samus powers in order to authorize then, Samus hello? you use all those abilities in super metroid she knows them well, so what's this research crap?

Is it just me or the sectors felt generic? I mean is only forest, ice and lava and there are only 3 of them, Metroid Fusion (a GBA game) had 6 sectors (more than a wii game) with more personality and more non-linear.

1. The manga is not cannon in the official timeline.
2. Even if the manga was cannon is just a visual novel adaptation of the first metroid game, so the story in Metroid (NES)/ Zero Mission and the manga is the same.

So even with the manga as cannon material there's still the prime series and the other Metroid titles that follow it (Prime 1 to Super Metroid) in wich Samus has grown as a character overcoming her fears and faced much menacing threats than the original Metroid (Phazon, Dark Samus/Metroid Prime, the ing, enchanced Mother Brain,etc.).
4.Meaning that even with the manga in mind the story in other m still doesn't makes any sense wathsoever, because it ignores the character progression of Samus tha happened in all the games.
5.There's even a panel in the manga in wich Samus says to Ridley that she isn't afraid of him anymore and blast the bastard into oblivion (for the first time).
6. Any way you look at it even with spinoff material other m script is one of the worse ever in a videogame.

Part of the problem is that Other M retcons Samus' character as a trained professional.
She kills things almost instinctively. It's similar to how soldiers are conditioned to handle extremely stressful, life-and-death situations.
Every time Samus has met and fought Ridley, save for Metroid 1/Zero Mission, she assumed he was dead. Every time, she handled the stress of seeing him again so that she could kill him.
If she was ever distracted/panicking while fighting Ridley, she'd be dead by now.
Looking back, he was really too generous with that score. I personally would give it about a 5/10 (_perhaps_ a 5.5/10). The game's average, and that's the long and short. There are good elements and there is fun to be had, but it feels like for every one element it did right, it did another element wrong.
This is part of the reason he doesn't give numbered scores, I assume. They make contradictions _way_ too obvious.
4/10. Takes all of Fusion's stumbles, but none of its steps forward.

After watching many reviews, I'm officially convinced that I'm the only one who likes this game.
It seems to be an alright game by itself. Smooth graphics, some cool combat and finishers, but along with some stupid pixel hunting adventure game crap, and some bland voice acting. Its what this game did to samus's character and metroids formula why people hate it. Instead of a "6 '3, imposing, courageous badass who doesnt take shit from no one, we now got a "5 '7, scared, boring protaganist who takes orders from her man despite his orders being stupid.

Even as a game itself it has some big flaws, combats really easy with the dodge roll auto charging your shots, there are stupid explanations for how your weapons arent given to you right at the beginning, bad direction and stupid lack of explanations pop up occaisonally with how the game doesnt tell you when to use power bombs or how you cant use your varia suit in the heat section for some reason, theres bad pixel hunter crap reminds people of bad point and click games, and movement is clunky with the d pad.

Your so right. Metroid Prime knew how to use FPS the right way. But you know I wouldn't just want a Super Metroid with better graphics. I would want almost like a FF7 to FF7 remake. Well not that drastic but I would want a remake that makes Super Metroid ALMOST feel like a different game altogether. I asked my mom to get me this game over a year ago. Never regretted it, even though Hard Mode gave me trouble. Then again, if it didn't do so it wouldn't be living up to its name. This game did have some good music, such as the Ridley theme and the one that plays when you get a brief summary of what has happened so far when you load a file.
I'll just call it like I see it, Samus getting triggered in Other M doesn't make sense. Why?
1. Because of that cutscene alone: We see her as a panicked little girl, standing in front of Ridley - that seems to imply that she recalls him killing her parents; making it so much more fitting for their first battle in Metroid 1/Zero Mission.

That, and I also miss Samus' height of 6'3". It was something that made her unique, even outside of her Power Suit. Other M retcons her to 5'7" IIRC, and Smash 4 has her on par with some of the taller females...if you include her heels (and the disparity between her Power Suit height and Zero Suit height might disturb some people).
I like it but they can't right it off unless the rebot everything after super metroid which there not gonna do and this gamed function was mostly story kinda how Zelda ocarina of time was mostly story until that became the main Zelda thing and jeez calm down a bit don't you think your being a little harsh

Can we agree that Nintendo should make a sequel after Metroid Fusion where the Federation places Samus as a bounty and hires bounty hunters to capture her dead or alive? Think what they could do with that!
Take it a step further and talk about the kind of internal strife, even civil war, taht could engulf the Federation if they declared the galaxy's greatest hero an outlaw. Now THAT"S an internal struggle befitting Samus Aran: loyalty and how to protect the galaxy when it is split in two (the Chozo did, after all, sort of bring her up for that). Having her pulled between two sides but never being beholden entirely to either's authority while trying to find the right path, that could be awesome. Also, could be a good opportunity for her to seek counsel with the Chozo (finding a means to communicate with them on their higher plane of existence/alternate dimension could be a major plot point) and as a result regain her Chozo Power Suit, symbolically freeing her from political ties (the Federation made her Fusion suit) and putting her on the path to settle things.

Well, if there was one thing Other M did right is explaining where the Federation got those frozen remains of Ridley that we found in the BSL since, you know, Ridley's corpse was basically vaporized at the end of Super Metroid. Oh and the cutscenes look really nice

I remember enjoying it but it seems like everyone else thinks it's a subpar Metroid experience that can burn in a dumpster fire...I will say though that your review was actually really good. You were pretty fair with the things that deserved praise as well as the criticisms of things you didn't enjoy. While I have no doubt that I like this game, appearently I have also forgotten a handful of things. You bring out some good points here. Why no familiar jingle when you pick up items? While I kinda like that they tried something different with Samus reusing her abilities beyond just losing them all at the start for the hundredth billionth time, I have to admit I found that Varia suit thing hilarious. It makes a strong case for why it's kinda dumb. However, I like the environments, the bosses are sic (except for MB), and you get more zero suit Samus. Look, I ain't saying it's on the level of the Prime games, but I do appreciate that they tried to do something with a narrative in a Metroid game. I dont dislike Samus's portrayal, at least not nearly to the degree everyone else seems to. I think this game deserves a second chance. If it ever got released on Switch with updated controls, I think people might at least find that it's a better game than they remember. I really suspect many didn't even play it all the way through. You did, and therefore your review is completely valid. Here's to hoping Metroid Dread will reignite the Metroid Shinespark!

3:13 Funnily enough, Adam's decision to unauthorize most of Samus' arsenal makes him look like an idiot. He only gave his reasoning for not using Power Bombs which make sense in-universe but it doesn't explain why didn't he only ban Power Bombs. They had zero idea what was on that ship and they easily could encountered something that would have slaughtered most of the Squad seeing as he limited Samus. It would be too late to authorize things when most of his men are dead after all.

I'd really like to see another Metroid game with a fleshed out story, but only if Samus doesn't suck, the other characters don't suck, the voice-acting doesn't suck, and it remains consistent with the rest of the series. Also, it has to render Other M completely non-canon.

I don't care what anyone says, this is a good game, even with a few flaws. However, Echoes is damn near flawless. I mean, what can one even say about that game that's even remotely derogatory. About the only complaint I ever hear is difficulty. The game's harder than the first one. Traversing Dark Aether is difficult. The Boost Guardian is tough...etc. If that's all anyone's got then it's an absolute masterpiece. I would very likely crown it as the best of the trilogy, which is extremely hard to do when the margin between them is smaller than the eye of a threading needle...
I know this is late, but given the long running 'non-vocal' Samus outside the grunts and slight screams of the prime voice actress, Samus having a voice will never reach the expectations of fans. It's like Link, Mario, and especially Donkey Kong. Giving Link a voice is like telling the players after all these years that their own personality is wrong. Mario has blurbs at best and very short sentences at worst (yes worst)... Why? Because the most of his voice we hear is from shouts of joy to grunts of pain (not unlike Samus). Now Donkey's father/grandfather Kong which was the original Kong in the Mario vs Donkey Kong series is very old and has most likely learned to speak the human language over the years; however, the others are still communicating with gorilla/monkey speech. The fact that Samus has a voice is nice, but the fact that the players are incredibly spoiled with their own interpretations from playing the same game(s) (Super Metroid) over and over again, no voice actress would be good enough, probably not even Tara Strong, as she's an EXCELLENT voice actress. The other problems are nitpicks from mostly the same source, their own interpretation. They have built up this image of Samus being silent and badass no matter what demons she's facing, including the murderer of her parents and extended family (Chozo). She's still human (despite Chozo and later Metroid DNA), and she still has a traumatic past that she constantly battles. The fact that her helmet hides any facial expressions she has, we can easily interpret the look upon seeing Ridley as fear for a few seconds before she starts blasting at him in anger, mainly because she's still trying to get revenge because he won't stay dead. In this game, he's a clone, and he's looking not unlike the day he killed her parents, instead of the ever changing form (Meta-Ridley included if you so choose) he has in the other games (including fusion which this game CAN explain a few things for the BSL). This game would have been better received as a movie, if only because we would receive a backstory and a progression that's understandable in a few hours of movie vs. gameplay.
Another problem is that besides Samus herself, only two other voices have any impact on her character as a whole through this game (yes, Anthony counts despite in being in Fusion). If I could do a video review of great quality, not unlike Chuggaaconroy's skills at it, I would definitely bring a new look at this game for ALL to see. Hopefully the hatred for this game would diminish, even just a little bit.
OK I understand Link and Mario, but I don't think Donkey Kong would ever need a voice (unless it was Frank Walker) doing the animal sounds.

What would've been cool would be if Samus had her upgrades from the start, and you could use them all at any time, but the game doesn't tell you until you beat the game for the first time. If you use them, Adam will scold you, but the only thing that changes are the cutscenes. For example, instead of suffering from PTSD in the Ridley scene, she could become angry and start recklessly shooting it, only snapping out when Anthony gets attacked. The ending would also be changed. Instead of her holding Adam's helmet and mourning over him, she put on her suit, shoots the helmet with a charge shot and flies off. She says nothing. A satisfying ending to an optional alternate story.
Every time I see someone criticizing the game for its authorization thing, I say "Look closer." I was playing the game recently, and I noticed a few things. For example, shortly after Samus exits her ship and starts walking around, a small text box on the side of the screen states, "Samus has decided not to use missiles or bombs until Adam authorizes them."
Meaning that Samus herself decided to do this. That's her decision. Furthermore, the reason why Adam is hesitant to authorize weapons is because Adam is simply doing his job as a Commanding Officer, whose very job is to authorize things only when absolutely necessary, so as to ensure the safety of all personnel. I hope this cleared up a few things.

lemar graham That I'm not sure. Maybe Adam thought Samus would be alright, so he waited to enable the Varia Suit, but when he saw the giant lava monster, that's probably what finally got him to do it. Not too sure about the other items though.

K...Just because the character *decided* to do it doesn't make it any less retarded...In fact, Samus *deciding* to conform to that just establishes a new found idiocy that she's never before displayed.
This is exactly why having a *game* revolve too much around it's story is a terrible thing. While Samus was stupid enough to turn off all of her goodies over the whim of a single ass hole...*I* wouldn't have. Which takes *me* the *player* out of the experience and completely breaks the most basic sense of immersion needed for a game. Especially in a series that has always valued player freedom.
Because this game is part of a series, you can't just not compare it to the others. Despite Samus actually being her own character, the way the other games handle her make her so immersive that *you, the player* feel like Samus. Whenever I play any other game in the series, I feel like it's me exploring. I feel like it's me in the armor. I feel like it's me in danger. You say whatever you want to about how the rest of the games handle this, yes, she usually looses her upgrades in stupid ways...but at least it's completely out of her, and by correlation, *your* control. In Metroid Prime you aren't left in any scenario that allows you to say "this is complete horseshit, if it was me I'd just use that right now*.
Granted, I know this game is supposed to be cinematic....but this is why making a cinematic Metroid is just completely dumb...Making a cinematic game in general is dumb. If you want to ingest entertainment that allows you to helplessly watch as the character you're *supposed* to connect with does a bunch of stupid things that you wouldn't...Watch a movie..This basic level of control is why games exist to begin with. To *let you experience. Not watch.*
*TL;DR*- It doesn't make a single shred of difference if Samus chose to obey Adam...It's still retarded and reprehensible. Limitations in video games should always be either be a direct choice from the player or circumstances outside of the protagonists control to preserve the must basic amount of immersion required for a *game*.

in case you were actually inquiring, yes, story IS important! Granted, it's ok to have a game with NO story, but if a game entertains a BAD story, it actually detracts from the game as well as the series.
As for character, we didn't have assumptions. We were already given the character of Samus in previous games, and she was portrayed as a "bad ass" bounty hunter. However, having her appear majorly emotionally fragile isn't a bad thing, UNLESS it contradicts her ALREADY present character.
Good to see Johnny had a counter measure in place for the "Screw Attack" echo in this video by means of the buzzer sound and the "NOT AUTHORIZED" banner. The Space Jump and Screw Attack are two of four abilities that Samus will activate without permission. The Gravity Suit comes shortly after due to the situation that required it. Last but not least, Samus uses a Power Bomb to take out the Queen Metroid. The beast's insides absorb most of the blast though.

When I first saw the ending of metroid other M, I actually was feeling pretty emotional at it, especially with the music and what is going on. It's even more emotional then the real ending after finding adam's helmet.

I would imagine the reason the game doesn't inform you that you can use Power Bombs during the Queen Metroid fight is because Adam is dead, so he's not around anymore to authorize you to use your own tools and shit.
Still, the game COULD and SHOULD have let you know that you could access the Power Bombs regardless, because after the whole 'authorization' fiasco players would likely still be waiting to be authorized on that shit.
That is what I thought after the fight, But that shit and having to aim at Mother Brain woman whatever the hell xD I needed to look up a guide online, there are some really unnecessary moments that halt progress in the game sadly

I would still love to know what's so dangerous about Samus having her Varia suit on so she doesn't fry to a fucking chrisp in Sector 3! Jesus... no wonder Lancun hates this game so much.

If Fusion happened after this, why the fuck is she still working for the Federation?? Why doesn't she know what Nightmare is when she fought it here? What the hell is even going on?? Even with all the wonderful Prime games written out of the Other M timeline, they STILL fucked up continuity.
Uhh..She doesn't work for them anymore at this point After Fusion, if I had to guess she did blow up their research station against their orders so I wouldn't be surprised if the Federation went after Samus.
I think you were too kind on the score and story in particular, it's not just "mediocre", it's incredibly bad on many levels.
Not only does it fall apart the second you think about any of its plot points for a minute, drops entire sub-plots like the Eraser, contradicts nearly every Metroid games not even counting Prime games, is a lazy obvious rehash of Fusion for the most part, it's above all a total character assassination when it comes to Samus.
Dull robot voice aside, she's so meek and slow witted in the cut-scenes it's hard to imagine that whiny girl chose the life of a solo bounty hunter. Prime Samus has the body language of a predator. Other M Samus looks awkward, especially with most characters towering above her.
Hell, if you pay attention, Samus locks her power-ups HERSELF, before Adam asks her to. She's so sub-servient that she anticipated what Adam would ask of her.
Technically, it's Samus' fault if your Varia suit is unplugged, Adam NEVER told her to remove anything but her weapons.
And at the end of the day - Ridley dies off screen, the deleter dies off screen, the metroid lab is destroyed by Adam, Mother Brain gets killed by the Federation, and Anthony steps in to save Madeline.
Samus does jack. Shit. You could say that she helped a lot, but Anthony's squad had to save her bacon at least 3 times in the process, it's pathetic.
Her only big score, the metroid queen, wasn't really a big part of Mother Brain's dumb plan, and you could argue that she only killed it with the help of Anthony.
Mother Brain's plan is also ultimately pathetic, she wants to crash an unarmed, unshielded space station into a GF colony... what? Even without Samus or the rogue GF squadron's intervention, the Bottle Ship would have been blown to smithereens by any gunship stationed near MB's target.
As in, this was all for nothing. Adam died for little reason and Samus was. Not. Needed.
tl;dr Other M's story is an active detriment to this game, and it's hard to ignore, unless you don't know anything about Metroid or completely turn your brain off the whole way through and never watch the Theater Mode that highlights how bullshit the whole thing is.
I'd argue it deserves to remove around 3 points out of ten from its score, it's that bad.

"M . O. M." That's weak. This game did have a lot of problems. I was happy to unlock Hard mode but guess what they did??? They took ALL of the missile tanks AND the energy tanks upgrades out! 70% of Metroid is about exploration! What a fuck up.
wait, that's hard mode? even Zeldas hard mode of taking double damage and dealing half damage makes more sense than that.
tyler ray I think you take more damage. The game is harder with no energy tanks at all. But I would have rather taken more damage and been able to explore and get that satisfying feeling of finding item.

Being an individual who owns and has played every Metroid game to a pulp (unfortunately even Other M) I feel like Other M had no business being a Metroid title.

I feel they spent more time sculpting Samus' ass for all the many parts she takes a hit and drops her suit than they did making the game.
They didn't make anything new, most every Metroid game has new and unique power ups, or at least has their own spin on (Ice, Plasma, and Wave beams in Prime).
Other M was a huge disappointment for me; nothing good stood out to me and I only remember the bad.
Team Ninja didn't have anything to do with Samus' character, that was all Sakamoto and his attempt of showing everyone his "TRUE VISION" of Samus.

It's funny, this is probably the most positive review for Other M I've seen. Most people won't shut up about the story.

Don't know why everyone bitches about voice acting. Most of it is monologue in her head. He want her to freak out in her head and show emotion to please the viewer even though it is just her thought process? I loved it and thought it was spot on for what they were going for.
Next she is a bounty hunter, even Boba Fett does not use weapons when told not to. Like in Empire Strikes Back. He is told no disintegration, he nods okay. And Samus even jokes about this in the game when she starts using the weapons with out his permission. And Adam lets her use the weapons she has when she needs them for other things besides blowing a hole in the ship. Like the grapple beam, the second he sees Anthony in trouble he tells Samus to use it.
Yes she gets freaked out by Ridley, he died when a planet blow up, if you played the game you would know this as she lets you know though the thoughts in her head that you discredit so much. So seeing a CLONE of the beast that killed your parents, and you thought was dead and not knowing it was a clone, would be damn freaky if you ask me. And she only does that for a sec, as she still fights and defeats him right there. And you are assuming she was just fine when she fought Ridley but you don't know that she does not have self narration in those other games like you do in this one.
And you had the Ridley fight way to dark turn the brightness up and you might be able to see. Your footage looked nothing like mine when I played.
It's doesn't seem like you've played the other games. If you haven't you shouldn't talk. Because if you really break it down only Metroid II and III are able to logically able to work with this title. The plot holes are so bad that the first game can't fit into this game (They changed how here suit works or she really couldn't concentrate until after the Chozo test). Some of this stuff that I'm going to use stuff from other games. If you haven't played them then you really have no place to talk. Anyways this is why you are wrong.
What's wrong with the voice acting is it's too monotone all the time. It feels like she has no interest in what's going on, so why should the player be interested. Even if she spoke in an calm and collected tone, like lets say Atticus Finch. It would be way more interesting and sound like she's invested in what's going on. Not only does it fail to get me interested those scenes drag on way too long and are unskippable.
I'll excepted she decided to tag along with Adam's team. Which means you have to listen to him. I will not except him taking the useful non-combat abilities: Varia suit, Grapple Beam, Gravity Suit, and Space Jump (without the screw attack). Also your first visit to to the PYR ripoff, you are sent there without your varia suit, when you have it already. It makes Adam and Samus look bad. Makes Adam look like he's doing this in spite, because she left his command. Samus looks dumb/suicidal, because apparently "The Baby" dying makes her depressed enough to to die, unless Adam says she can use life saving gear. If she lost her gear that's one thing (and maybe a fun challenge), but she already has it. Then she could have perused "The Mystery Creature" and gotten it taken care of early. But nope Adam didn't Authorize it, doesn't that sound stupid. The speed Booster and Shine spark you have to go on a boring, +20 minutes long, circle. When you finally have no other means of progressing, it is finally authorized. When you could have progressed starting out with it in the first place. After that, the Wave Beam, You get to a spot where using the Wave Beam is needed to progress, but Adam stays silent. So you head back and you are forced into a kill box. The only way you can stop your attackers is by using the Wave Beam. Adam takes his sweat time radioing you on this (maybe because he expected Samus to be smart enough save herself and explain to him later). Lastly, she could have just immediately used her "Gravity Feature" right after Adam died.
Ridley you defeat him so many times in the series that it doesn't matter if she thought he was dead. she's defeated him 7 times (if you beat him at the space station in Super Metroid). So what if Ridley killed her parents by this point, she's the strongest bounty hunter in the galaxy. It's her job not to let this stuff effect her, or she would have gotten corrupted in Prime 3. If they wanted to do that break down, Zero Mission would be the place to do it. Even though her character hasn't been fleshed out much, I get the feeling (when it takes place) that she would get pissed like Luke was confronting Vader (after taunting him) on the death star in episode VI. she would be cruel and force him into submission. Like Luke just beating Vader into submission and pounding on him. In Prime one, the first encounter, her body language subtle, but makes her look pissed. Her stopping and clenching her fist with a look of anger. In Prime 3, she dives down trying to get extra shots in to make sure he's dead. Instead of maneuvering to slow herself down to get more time to find way to survive. Samus doesn't get choked up in the Prime Trilogy at Metroid Prime/Dark Samus or Phazon. When she knows that this stuff killed the race that raised her and her bounty hunter friends.

Your Boba Fett analogy doesn't work at all...because that's a *movie*. When you watch Empire, you aren't expected to take the role of Boba or even be remotely immersed in his character.
Metroid on the other hand...Is a game...How am I expected to be immersed in the game, feel like I'm in the world...If I don't even have control over my avatar?...If I wanted to watch a story unfold and have no control over the characters decision making process, then I'd just watch a movie or tv show. In every other game in the series, when you loose upgrades it's due to circumstances completely outside of her control, which puts limitations on the player without breaking immersion.
In Prime, you can't explore Magmor Caverns in depth because of the heat and because the player does not possess the equipment required to traverse the heat...Not because Samus doesn't want to. You the player have to physically go get the Varia Suit, and once you do, it's open to you as much as you want. Samus already possessing a piece of equipment and not letting the player use it because *she doesn't want to* is terrible game design. That same thought can be applied to her thoughts and emotions.
Samus only exists as a conduit for the player. Nothing more than a player's vehicle into that world. Why should she be freaking out over Ridley when both her and I have already kicked his ass enough times for him to be nothing more than an inconvenience? It doesn't make any sense and quite frankly, people don't play games to see Samus's reaction to Ridley...They play games so *they* can react to Ridley. Samus having a mental breakdown to an enemy that we've both destroyed several times throughout the series at this point only serves as a means to kick the player out of the experience. If this was a movie, that'd be okay...In a game, that's completely unacceptable.
Because of the way games work I have more attachment to my nameless prisoner in Skyrim than I could ever have to this cinematic version of Samus...That's bad *game* design.

I already typed this out once, but more people should see why Nintendo shouldn't make more games like other m. These are just the plot holes that make it impossible for it to be connected to the Metroid series. Not plots in that contradict the the game itself.
"There are lots plot holes in this game. Like when she says this is the first federation mission since she left Adam. That goes against prime 3, when she led the federation to war. Prime 2 and Hunters were directly involved with the federation.
Next when has it been established that mother brain has telepathy or you need telepathy to control metroids. Also why would the federation use a Chozo experiment, that went Skynet on it's creators. Especially when the federation has Aurora units, a successful federation version of mother brain (from prime 3). The Aurora units control stuff on a network. Which the federation could do what the Enclave (Fallout) did with the Death-Claws. They strapped mind control helmets on them. So the federation could have connected these mind controlled metroids to the Aurora network.
This game completely rips off metroid fusion. Since the game is so similar to fusion, a smart person would recognize that the situation is similar. So it shouldn't be a surprise in Fusion that the federation is experimenting on metroids. And if it's not a surprise I think she might try to do something sooner than at the end mission in Fusion.
The Federation was trying to arrest Samus in end of other M. We know that there are more corrupt people in the federation, because of metroid Fusion. So the Federation is a corrupt government after Super Metroid. And a corrupt government would make Samus a criminal and cover it up. And Metroid Fusion ends with Samus being a fugitive or running from the law. So it would only make sense that other M ends with her being a fugitive and the federation trying to cover it up. And if she's a fugitive in other M, Metroid Fusion could not have happened.
Metroid Fusion established that metroids could only get passed their larval stage in SR388. Because that was the only environment that worked for metroids. In Metroids Fusion they replicate the environment. So why didn't other M do that and how is there a metroid queen on the Bottle Ship. It's impossible for there to be A metroid queen on the Bottle Ship according to Metroid Fusion.
If Samus concentrates here suit on, off, energy, and missiles. (Metroid Zero Mission is where Samus' suit is some what explained) Then why didn't she do that in Metroid Zero Mission, instead of wondering around in her zero suit towards the end. This suit was made by the Chozo. The Chozo are an enlightened race, with unmatched technology (except the Aurora units). So no one could have altered the suit. So concentrating her suit doesn't make sense. So Metroid Zero Mission couldn't of happened. And if Metroid Zero Mission didn't happen, Metroid Prime could not have happened. Or Samus just likes making things unnecessarily difficult like Adam in other M. Also there is the obvious Ridley plot hole. In she's beaten Ridley 7 times (if you beat him in the space station in Super Metroid). So what if she though he was dead or him killing her parents. She doesn't freak out in Zero Mission, so why now. In Prime is subtle, but on the space pirate ship you see her stop, clench her fist with a look of anger. In Prime 3 instead of trying to slow her descent, she dives down to make sure Ridley doesn't come come back. So it's more in her character to be pissed at the sight of Ridley, than to be scared of Ridley. By now it's stupid to assume that Ridley is dead. He's always coming back.
So the only games that could fit into the same timeline as other M is: Metroid 2 return of Samus and Super Metroid.

This game is a piece of art, team ninja showed a huge respect to the mechanics of the original serie (metroid & super metroid) and managed to mix an interesting combination between retro and modern gameplay. I really liked the story (even if it was kinda average with bad voice acting), the creative camera angles and the replay value.
P.S: and yes, I've also played and liked the Metroid Prime series but I'm not a narrow-minded idiot who criticizes another type of gameplay just because nintendo tried something else other than FPS.

That's the whole point; it has nothing to do with the prime series but with the original "side-scrolling" type, and yet again the fandom decided that from now on any metroid must be FPS and put this one into their shitlist. And for such behaviour you get Federation Force from nintendo with love.
The only part I agree with you is about exploration which is kinda cheap in comparison to the previous metroid games, but again it's not a reason to flame Other M. I'd rather sending my feedback to nintendo hopefully they'd bring back the traditional exploration for the next metroid (if there'll be a next one).

Having no problem with the D-pad movement, I think it's a good idea ,but for the other parts of the control scheme.....yeeeah those Famicom nostalgia has to be blamed. This game seriously need the classic controller option imo.

First of all the authorization feature was better than simply losing your upgrades for a stupid reason. second this game had one of the best soundtracks in the series.
Johnny Probably never figured it out when he made this reveiw, but you are able to dodge attacks while in first person missle mode. One of the great misteps of this game's beginning tutorial was that they never showed you that you can do this.
