      I could not wait to grab it as soon as I learned about it. I was not disappointed in AM2R at all. It happens to be the best remake of the original Metroid 2, IMO.
      Speaking of the difficulty levels, the easy level is still a bit harder than even the normal level on official Metroid games, the normal level even harder, while the hard level is really hard! Totally Awesome! There are still a couple of items I am unable to get, due to the way you get them, but I am constantly practicing to try and get them. I think that too is awesome, because it keeps me coming back to play it over again, and because of it I often discover new ways to do certain things in the game. That to me is a sign of a well designed game!
      From what I have seen of SR, the game more or less guides the player too much during game play, taking the exploration factor down to almost nonexistence. It is the exploration, and not knowing what's next that makes this franchise what it is supposed to be. It is what attracted me to the first Metroid game, and all the good ones that came after it. Don't tell me where to go, is my motto. I want to discover it on my own.

    What most don't understand is that making video games happens to be a form of art. You can't rush art. AM2R may be a fan made remake of Metroid 2 Return of Samus, but it's a remake done right. Plus it was given something that was absent from the original: An escape sequence after causing a particular event to happen. Escape sequences are kind of a staple in the Metroid series.

    It's welcoming to see somebody review this game with a level head. Not saying Nintendo doesn't deserve the criticism, they're clearly behind from a business standpoint. But after reading a few reviews where they say Nintendo is clearly out of their minds, spelling doom and gloom for the series, it feels refreshing seeing someone like Johnny take a level headed approach to the review. Focus on the game and what it has to offer. I wish the Metroid series and all of its fans, happy 30th Anniversary! Here's to more adventures in the galaxy and beyond!

    • @aaronman4772
      @aaronman4772 8 років тому +11

      The thing is, they're not really that behind on a business standpoint. Just think about what that'd say to pretty much every hackjob "dev" on the internet if a high profile fan game that pretty much uses complete IP from them is allowed to stay open.
      It'd be a legal nightmare for Nintendo, to try and tell what fan games are allowed to stay up and which they want to take down, not to mention the battles from those they chose to take down saying "But X was allowed to stay up, so why not mine?"
      It's sad to have something with such love and care put into it be put down in regards to ease of finding it, but if they didn't tell the person to take it down? That's just opening Pandora's Box for people using their IPs to try and make a quick attention/buck.

    • @sirpiguithy7341
      @sirpiguithy7341 8 років тому +15

      +aaronman4772 Oh I wouldn't dispute that at all. They have every right to protect their IP's. It's the little bit in me that wishes Nintendo take what Sega is doing with Mania, and allow up and coming developers tinker with some of their IP's with care and supervision.

    • @lugbzurg8987
      @lugbzurg8987 8 років тому +24

      It's not a legal nightmare at all. You're thinking of Trademark, not Copyright. Leaving fangames alone doesn't legally-harm intellectual properties whatsoever. If it did, then Sega wouldn't own Sonic the Hedgehog anymore, and there are entire CONVENTIONS dedicated to making Sonic fangames. Nintendo doesn't take down fangames because they have to. They take down fangames because they WANT to.

      Hayden Snow Productions I disagree. They have different styles, sure, but because they aren't just carbon copies of one another, I honestly feel like they are both equally amazing games. While Samus Returns clearly has higher production values, I could still go back and play either of these right now, and know for certain that I'm going to have a fun time. I might even rank both over Fusion, although if I did they would still be within inches of each other.
      It would be easier to rate my top 5 Metroid games by difficulty than by which is better, but both Metroid 2 remakes would certainly be on that list.

I had my problems with Super Metroid too at first - as Johnny said, Super is more for the rather experienced Metroid fan. Zero Mission and Fusion are the best ones to start. As part of an enormous modding community myself, it's heartbreaking to see this kinda thing. Chances are Nintendo DID know about this and simply let it grow for a while. Nintendo of Japan actually encourages fan content like this. to a certain degree anyway. its why they leave most projects alone. however, when a project like this gets big enough to compete, they issue a DMCA. That's what happened to our previous mod "Project M"
    They really didn't care about PM until it started popping up publicly at tournaments. Final release hit 3.6, I believe it was a DMCA take down that hit the official release (i wasn't part of that team at that time) although they won't talk about it. Now an even larger mod has been released in its wake. Eventually with the hype, this one too will get a DMCA no doubt, but i'm sure nintendo already knows about it.
    I personally loved this game. it saddens me i can't seem to beat it due to a bug i encountered that crashes the game instantly when i get knocked down by the first bipedal metroid. I might do a lets play of it, if i can find a way to fix it. its clearly not affecting everyone.

      I don't think it matters really, since I was using the plural form of series. Johnny's Sonic and Metroid reviews are both the ones that made me a fan of his when I found them, and they're generally the ones that have inspired me the most. I've been saying since it got released and shut down. With AM2R, it was in development for so long and there was a demo available for some time. Nintendo could have easily shut it down the minute development started. But they didn't. They allowed it to release for a little bit and allow it to spread onto the web. We all know including Nintendo, once it hits the net it's out there for good. They allowed the game and Pokemon uranium to be finished and released for people to enjoy, and protect their IP at the same time. After this whole thing, Nintendo has my respect for sure.

    • @Melkac
      @Melkac 8 років тому +5

      Pokemon Uranium looked like a terrible fan game from day one, that's why it didn't get any attention from anyone until it was released. Nibtendo didn't even contact the creator, he simply got scared once AM2R got a DMCA.

      I kind of agree with you. Nintendo could have shut it down at any time, but waited after it was released to do so. Now it is out there forever. johnny, i really dont wanna sound like im complaining, especially since you mentioned the difficulty settings in the video, but you went on a rant about how accessible the game is, when you can lower the difficulty and make it more accessible.
    to me when a game offers an easy mode, thats the game saying here's a version everyone can play and beat at any skill level. and when it offers a hard mode, i think ok, you wanted a better challenge, play me again with this on. you effectively negate your entire argument about accessibility when you factor in these settings. and you come off as contradictory.
    if casuals are having a hard time on normal they should lower the difficulty and improve they're skill to play harder difficulties. not numb the difficulty down a smidge for people who want a moderate challenge without having to play through the harder difficulties.
    i hope you understand what i mean im not trying to shit on you or your opinion but i just had to voice myself. fantastic review =)

    • @NotTerravin
      @NotTerravin 8 років тому +51

      The biggest problem about what you said is that in AM2R you can't change difficulty after you've started the file, meaning if the player hits a roadblock in challenge and wants to turn it down a notch, they have to start all over.

    • @ZeoLightning
      @ZeoLightning 8 років тому +58

      you see though this is not a problem with the game, but with the player, if you've played up to a point that you havent gotten experienced enough to pass it, (becuase the difficulty of the game is a very steady pace upwards) then you either should improve, Explore (look up E tanks and armor upgrads) or you have to swallow that pill. there is a certain amount of hand holding we should do for a player, no other metroid titles have a difficulty setting you can pick. if you get road blocked in those games its even worse. and when i first played metroid fusion (my first metroid game) i was stuck on nightmare for a week. but i had no choice but to play. here there IS the option of playing on a lower difficulty.

    I am most likely getting both Zero Mission and Fusion on my Birthday, and my only Metroid experience is the Virtual Console Metroid for the 3DS, and Metroid Prime hunters.
    This series is always awesome, so I hope to be able to download and play this game.
    Maybe after Federation Force, if I get it.

      That's why they should have stopped the project earlier. Now that it is on the Internet, only the hardcore fans would buy a legitimized copy of the game. All the others would just roam the Internet until they get their free copy (even if the legit version ended up more polished, with more contents etc.)
      That's a shame, true. Now let's hope Nintendo will pick this game as a proof of success and actually do a new 2D Metroid game (but not a remake of 2, they'd probably get shit and criticism if they do)

      No, they shouldn't. It's an enormous hassle to take something someone else made it and just distribute it for all sorts of reasons, much less hire them. And while I think it's only in the gray area of "crimes", it should be recognized as such.
      This is an amazing game, the effort is admirable, and I'm glad it's easily found even if the official links were taken down. But it would be horrible to set the precedent that anyone can tamper with someone else's IP without permission and expect to be officially acnowledged or celebrated, or even worse get paid or get a job.

      Well, Nintendo could have bought it before it was released. For example Ittle dew and freedom planet started of as Zelda and sonic games respectively, hell ittle dew was even pitched to Nintendo as a Zelda game (they obviously said no). Usually though it's the developer who approached the IP holder and if they say no they either release it for free or they change out skins and make it a unique game.

      Did it ever occur to you that Nintendo knew about this development project long before it was finally released in a mostly completed form, yet they chose to wait until it was released before issuing the take down? Why would they do it that way? because they could see it was a really great work of art in the franchise, even if it wasn't an official game, and they secretly wanted it to get out for everybody to grab and play. You know they knew that once it was released, it would not be able to be stopped from being available forever. If they were truly protecting their IP, they would have worked to prevent the release altogether, BEFORE it was released.

    • @mdstevens0612
      @mdstevens0612 5 років тому +6

      I mean it's unnecessary for one. Nintendo is likely losing chump change if anything. With a shiny new release of Metroid 2, there's at least some people curious enough about the original to go back and play it, and that's free marketing right there.
      And no, Nintendo probably didn't try pull some scooby doo shit and cancel it after it went live for a day, Nintendo probably just didn't think it would be as big a deal or were unaware until it went big, and then they canceled it as soon as they saw it as a threat to their revenue. Plus their own version would have been somewhat into production at release so yeah, they saw the competition and ban hammered it, despite the fact that AM2R and Samus Returns actually can occupy the same space and if they'd just done nothing, most people would just have said play both.
      Because both are well made and fully realised versions of Metroid 2. But now there's a healthy contingent of gamers who out of principle won't buy Samus Returns.

I struggled more with Ridley in Super Metroid than most of the bosses here. Maybe gets harder more quickly than them but never seemed unfair or anything. Even the several metroids at once really weren't that hard since they come much later in the game when you're powerful enough to deal with it.

      Difficulty in videogames can be subjective. In games that are naturally challenging like Dark Souls, I get satisfaction from mastering the mechanics and playing the game the way that it was truly meant to be played. With easier games like Zelda Wind Waker, I get enjoyment out of imposing my own challenges like getting no heart containers, or in Metroid Zero Mission I like seeing how fast I can beat it. My current record for 100% is 1:47:52 on Normal. If you are a type of person who knows how to chellenge yourself, then you can have fun with just about any type of videogame.
