+Bunnyboy King I wouldn't say the dude has completely dropped off the internet's face, since I've seen him comment here and there a few times on UA-cam. In terms of making content though.... yea, I think the dude's done for, which is a shame because SMBZ looked it had potential to be a very good fan project.
Also, AM2R essentially got resurrected by some people who reverse-engineered it, so it's on version 1.31 (with 1.32 on the way).

There's a way to cut down on the 'stop and go' pace people compain about. Meleeing a frozen enemy shatters them. If you land an Ice Beam shot on an enemy that's rushing you, jump, and melee them mid-air, you can take them out without losing speed.
My strategy for not using the counter a ton was ice beam+missle. It's actually very effective against enemies that can be frozen.
I'm so used to turning the Ice Beam off to speed up enemies' destruction in Super Metroid, I never even considered that XD

I don't know about you, but when Nintendo handed the DMCA to AM2R, it really felt like a sign that they were working on a Metroid 2 Remake themselves. It felt more specific than their other fan project shutdowns.
Johnny's intro gets me in such a funky groove all day everytime.

I actually read a good portion of the Metroid manga. More specifically the time when Samus herself was a child, before her parents along with all the other people of her home of K-2L(however you want to type in the name of that Federation colony planet). The Chozo actually INTRODUCED the Metroids into the ecosystem of SR388 to combat the threat of the X-Parasites. However, to carry out their plan, they needed something that could only be found on previously mentioned Federation planet. After the Space Pirate attack that left Samus an orphan, the Chozo returned to gather what they needed and brought Samus with them. Can't recall the name of the substance they needed, but it was used to get their plans with the Metroids going to keep the X at bay. The story involving Samus is the Metroid series as we know it.

I'm starting to dislike how amiibos are getting to important to game content now.

Honestly, I saw this coming eventually. Nintendo has been slowly creeping how much stuff you unlock with an amiibo ever since their inception. First they were just a neat little thing to some extra lives or something a la cheat code. Then they started unlocking alternate costumes which...Kinda scummy but sure whatever. Then they started unlocking new weapons or powerups (Kirby Amiibo is the ONLY WAY to get UFO in planet robobot). Then they began attaching concept art and bonus stuff that you usually got by just playing the game to the damn things (I'd like to see the bonus features being actual bonus features again and not DLC attatched to a piece of plastic). Now we've finally reached the point where actual gameplay is being locked behind amiibo. The worst bit is that unless they keep releasing the old amiibo, then not even a year down the line the only way to get the content will be by finding it online and boy will it sell for high prices if there's something important behind it... Also, a lot of the amiibo don't circulate because people will collect them so eventually, it may be the case that only collectors will have those amiibos. And the final sin? The things degrade pretty easily. I've heard stories of amiibos not scanning anymore shortly after unboxing, cracking and falling apart for no reason and just overall...why? I just hope we never get to EA levels of bullshit DLC where something REALLY important to the story or experience is locked behind an amiibo. Imagine playing some future Mario title: You just beat Bowser and as has become standard lately, he fakes you out and there's another fight. Then a little window pops up saying something like: "Bowser got away! Scan your Bowser Amiibo to unlock his new hideout!" Or I could see this going with pokemon where instead of downloadable event pokemon (which is already bullshit), they release a limited amount of Amiibo to unlock that pokemon.
I thought fans were whining for a purpose for the amiibos, why are they now also whining for it having a purpose?

God, I remember really enjoying this. I was always a Metroid fan since I was a kid (Fusion was the first for me. Got it from a competition where I was supposed to get Crash. Funny, eh?), but I wasn’t a hardcore fan until about late 2017 ish. Practised for *100’s* of hours to sequence break Zero Mission (fucking love that game) and 100% both that and Fusion. It took many hours of sweat and tears, but I’m glad that I did it. I’ll eventually get onto the older ones and onto the Prime series, but eh.

I honestly can't wait till i get this game, hearing some of the music in gameplay vids gave me chills which is one of the things I absolutely look forward to in a Metroid game

I really enjoyed the game. And more than that, was relieved by it. The finale to the Digger fight, at 12:19, was so fucking badass when I saw it. That one scene alone pretty much made up for Other M entirely.
Just ices that machine without even turning her head. Now that's Samus.
Samus truly has returned! And so has Kenji Yamamoto, I absolutely love this remake, it gave you the classic metroid feeling while adding a few new elements, and a secret ending foreshadowing perhaps another remake.

I really need to get this, not just to play it, but to ensure nintendo that 2D metroid has a following. I personally don't care too much for the prime series, i've tried the first and i kinda enjoyed it... but not as much as the 2D ones.
I agree with you on not too much sequence breaking, but i would not say there were none. Also you can get a lot of secrets early with just bomb hop, that is from all metroids easiest to perform. I just for fun bomb jumped that huge vertical shafts after you get space jump just bcs i could. Also i bypassed nearly all climbing on frozen enemies with that.
I would say, AM2R was slightly better game but really, that game put line so high samus returns is still great game and i hope nintendo will give mercury at least 2-3 more 2d metroid games contract and let them release something original, so they can really show their talent without being bound by original material that much. Metroid 5 Cought cough.

My first Metroid game was actually AM2R. And the funniest thing is that a friend of mine is so idiotically angry at me for saying 'When I play Metroid: Samus Returns, I know I will like it, however I will still like AM2R More as it introduced me to the series.' and every time I tell him that he gets in such a massive fuss.
My first metroid game and i love it. I only have a 3ds and wii so ill see what other metroid games i can play.
If you have a New 3ds you can try Super Metroid; and if not, you can still play the Prime trilogy in the Wii, though I don't know if you can buy it digitally, because it is expensive physical.
Ah, and if you'd like to try a different version of Metroid 2 and have a PC, you should play AM2R: it is free and a very good Metroid game, even if it was made by fans. Who knows, you may even like it more than Samus Returns; personally however, I prefer Samus Returns.

The game would've been more interesting if you got the baby metroid earlier in the game. Maybe have an egg get sucked up by the digger bot and left in the upper areas. Then when it bonds to Samus, it can help during bossfights. Maybe it sucks up HP from the boss and gives it to Samus a la Super Metroid. Fixes the need to backtrack after beating the Metroid Queen.
Four years passed and I just never really got into this game like I did the other Metroid games.
I like how Johnny avoids saying that AM2R is the better game. Don't get me wrong, I've bought this game and I like it. But I still think AM2R was way more creative in design.

I recently beat it on Fusion mode and it is so unforgiving. You really do die in like 1 or 2 hits on most enemies. I think 3 or 4 on the queen.
I too wish it sells well.
This was actually my first Metroid game. I was scared to try it out, but man I ended up adoring it.
DuoReview You absolutely need to try Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. Prime 1 was my first ever Metroid Game and it's easily my 2nd or 3rd favorite game of all time.

Be warned with super metroid. You can get lost/stuck. But it's freaking great. I highly recommend zero mission and fusion.
Seems like I've got some new stuff to try out now. I think I'll try out Fusion, Zero Mission, and the Prime Trilogy next then. =D

WiiManElite That's called progression. You start weak and underpowered, but by the end of the game you're a force of nature.
Am I the only one who found this game easy? Not as much as ZM, but I found Fusion much tougher, and I didn't die here nearly as much as in Echoes (Favorite 3D Metroid game purely because of that challenge). Still, SR was a fantastic game and a great return to form after the abomination of Other M.

Adding onto what Johnny said at the end, I don't think it matters whether Samus Returns is better or worse than AM2R. At the end of the day, both are fantastic reinterpretations of the original Metroid 2. With two great remakes of a Game Boy classic and more Metroid on the way, there's no better time to be a Metroid fan.
+Blue I didn't play AM2R and don't have the time to hunt it down on the internet when my backlog is ginormous enough as is. I mean I got Freedom Planet during the Steam Summer Sale of 2015 & I FINALLY beat it after owning it for 2 years.
AM2R won’t take all that long to complete though. Even hunting down all the items the game took me under 5 hours to beat on normal. So I’d say you should definitely give it a chance.
Blue they're hard to compare imo because they're radically different, but they have 2 things in common. 1: Metroid 2 remakes, 2: awesome.

If you think that Super Metroid is the be all end all metroid game, then you definitely enjoy AM2R most, which makes me believe that Johnny enjoyed it much more, but if you enjoyed Zero mission and Fusion more, you'll most likely like Samus Returns better.

Samus Returns' sales may not seem very good, but apparently it had "firm sales" according to Nintendo in a financial report at the time (they say it on the 3rd page).

Nothing great by any means, but I think it did okay for Nintendo's expectations. I think that Dread can do significantly better though, because Metroid has shown that it can be a multi million seller with the right push (Prime sold almost 3 million despite it not being on Nintendo's best performing platform).

That's... honestly, not as weird of a plot twist as you'd think, considering this is Kingdom Hearts we're talking about.
I’d much rather see Sora make it in as a Secret Superboss in a certain overhyped game that’s getting remade for PS4 but will take a great deal of time before coming out. The antagonist of this game was a Secret Boss of one of the Kingdom Hearts Games.
Doesn't matter which one is better, both are still good games, just buy Samus Returns to make sure we get more of these
Buy it because it's a good game in a dying franchise of extraordinary quality to show the developers we want more. It's not a case like "buy Marvel Infinite so the franchise doesn't die even though the game is very flawed." It's a good game so support the devs, it's basic logic.

I was able to get the spider ball early with bomb jumping but that was pretty much it.
Strange that they gave us such a limited wall-jump. You'd think that, since we get the spider ball so early anyway, letting us wall-jump up a single wall wouldn't be a game-breaking ability for us to have.
The wall jump was basically worthless; I don't think I used it for anything at all.
Hooded Man I found a few uses for the wall jump early on but that's about it.
The Wall jump is useless now?!? then what was the point of me getting stuck in that locked room!
Hooded Man Yeah once you get the space jump the wall jump can't be used and is pretty useless.
After failing to get into Metroid through Super and Fusion, and getting a good way through AM2R, Samus Returns is officially the first Metroid game I've completed, and now I'm a fan. I'll see if I can get my hands on the Metroid Prime Trilogy.
If you don't want to drop 60+ for a physical copy, I recommend getting Prime Trilogy on the WiiU eshop, where there it's only 20
Play Zero Mission
So far I only found myself beating zero mission I don't stay interested in the others for some reason.
If you didn't get through Super or Fusion, I have a hard time believing you'll get through the Prime trilogy. They're way bigger, longer, and slower.

This was such a great game. Had a few blemishes but it was honestly pretty damn good. I don't think it's a cop-out to not compare it to AM2R either. Both are great games and the fanbase really should not be split because of it.
We are not splitting because of them; in fact, most of us debate in a civilized way or simply talk about why we prefer AM2R or Samus Returns. There are, unfortunately, some people that behave like kids and want everyone to hate Nintendo and the Metroid saga to die because of the "abomination" that Samus Returns is.
Personally, I like both games; but I prefer Samus Returns to the point to be my favorite Metroid game.

Luke Leitner I feel like those games are tricky to review, especially for Johnny, because they're purely story, there's not really gameplay, so when Johnny goes over the story, as he always does, he's spoiling the entire game, and if he skipped the story, there's nothing to review.
Billythepancake well Johnny's never been a stranger to spoiling a game's whole story. The only times he doesn't really do it are when it's a very recent game, like how in this one he didn't say who the true final boss was

Well, Johnny, there technically WAS a 3DS Metroid game that was scrapped, and that was a remake of Fusion... made by Mercury Steam. See, when Mercury Steam approached Nintendo to work on a Metroid title, they originally planned on remaking Fusion, but Sakamoto insisted they remade Metroid 2 instead. A wise decision in my opinion since Fusion is in absolutely no need of a remake and Metroid 2 was long overdue for the Zero Mission treatment.
After this what we need is Metroid 5, something that continues after Fusion's ending. After all she became a fugitive of the GF. + I really want an excuse to see Samus in her Fusion suit again.
They'd probably find an excuse to get her back in her standard Power Suit. The whole reason they made the Fusion Suit in the first place was due to an unfounded fear that Samus' design growing stale. I'm not joking about this.
WiiManElite How do you know AM2R is what led Nintendo to remake Metroid 2? Is that a completely true claim or are you just automatically assuming things?

- Samus has destroyed Federation research against orders (for the second time if Other M is counted as canon) and made Metroids extinct
- the Federation had interest in studying and weaponising the X parasites, but they're also extinct - again, thanks to Samus
- Samus is now the only source of Metroid DNA in the universe
If done right this could lead to an epic story of Samus fighting against a corrupt Federation, because she's destroyed every opportunity they had of creating bioweapons.

AM2R is by far my favorite Metroid game. It's honestly amazing. But I feel like I can't say if it's better or not than Samus Returns. Samus Returns does a lot of stuff better than AM2R and vice versa. Both are incredible games but I don't feel like I can pick one over the other. As an example, AM2R honestly has the best soundtrack in the entire series. I'm madly in love with it. And I love how in Samus Returns, you can go back through the game with the baby after killing the queen. And honestly, I think that Samus Returns and AM2R are 2 totally different games. Look at the endings. After you kill the queen in AM2R, the music is peaceful. It's nighttime on SR388 and it's just beautiful and hopeful. You're almost sad that the planet is gonna get destroyed in Fusion. But in Samus Returns, it's ugly and green. It's a horrible planet and you can't wait to get off it. It ends on a much more uncertain note. Samus still has a lot of adventures left ahead of her. It's much more of a "to be continued" than the finality of AM2R's ending. And that exemplifies my point. They're totally different games. Maybe they should be compared, but I don't think I can compare them. Hell, just listen to Samus Returns' remix of Surface of SR388. It's completely different than AM2R's remix of Surface of SR388. Anyways, my point is, I now have 2 games as my favorite Metroid. And better yet, I have 2 incredible remakes of Metroid 2 that I can enjoy whenever I want
Flippy Sidee Can't agree with you more. Both are amazing Metroid games, for completely different reasons; most impressive of all to me though is how neither copied any unique setpieces, music, or mechanics from the other. The only similarities are because both are Metroid titles and because both are based on Metroid 2.
