  • On this video we cover why and what to look for when tackling this very common code, P1811 Maximum Adapts & Long Shift Detected, on the 4T65-E Transmission. There are a lot of items that can cause this code and all items have to be addressed for a successful repair on one of this units.

Wow this guy sure knows what he is doing and talking about. This isn’t the first video I’ve seen of his either. I can honestly say that If I could pick anyone to hire to work on my transmission, it would have to be this guy. Without a doubt y’all

Sorry, Jim, never saw your comment until now. Turned out great except I put the tcc solenoid in backwards. Wouldn't lock up with torque converter at 45 mph. Had to go back in and fix that, and after worked great. Daughter got hit a month later and totaled the car. Lol

He's not kidding about the torx around the clutch hub area of the valve body. Just stripped one a week ago. Getting that out without damaging the valve body consisted of drilling a little, then sharpening the drill bit and repeating for about an hour or two. The metal those bolts are made from really dulls your drill bits fast.

I believe in adding a 1x1/2x1/4 neodmndym magnet to the inside corner of the pan. it is unbelievable how much metal paste it collects over the years. that paste would otherwise accumulate on speed sensors, checkballs, and many other metal, pressure plate, and solenoid components

I just finished installing the five new solenoids on my 2001 lesabre, the clips that secure two of the connectors broke and now can't lock onto the new parts, I guess due to the heat they were very brittle and as careful as I was trying to be it still snapped like yours did, the one with the silver plate had a piece broken so I was wondering if that was causing the hard shift, the trans worked perfectly it shifted good didn't slip went into gear without incident I just hope this fixes the problem the car has 254.00 on it and runs like a top, sometimes it would run for months without any problems then bam it starts acting up.

What would cause an occasional disengage between 1st and 2nd at WOT on a 4t60e? I let off the pedal for several seconds, and it reengages. I can't replicate it afterwards, so I know the clutches aren't burned out. Thanks.

  • @danielthechskid

The part that I still don't understand here is why when the P1811 DTC trips in the PCM it is programmed to completely stop powering the PCS for the rest of the time that the ignition is on instead of just during the affected wonky shift from the issue. Why punish the fuel economy, the pump, and rest of the internals with sustained excessive line pressure if only a single shift/clutch is affected?
We had a 2002 Venture with the signs of something randomly sticking because usually hot or cold, heavy acceleration or light, it was as you say just fine, flawless shifts all the way up and back down with good numbers for shift times on the scan tool and the PCS amps never went below 2/3rds of an amp. It would then randomly spaz out and have the long delayed 1-2 shift that is characteristic of these and set the code, turn off the PCS, then shift perfectly again just extra hard as is to be expected.
I'm betting that its internals would have been in a very similar condition to the ones shown here in this video.

Where would you ad the lines for the Circulating pump? And do you have any pointers and/or advise on this project.

I had a bad time with that Superior AFL kit. It tells you in the instructions to use the old valve as a driving tool for the plug. The old valve didn't come back out after that. I got lucky and had a friend with the reamer hardware for the Sonnax kit though. It works slick, but I'd hate to have to buy the tooling for it. It might be worth it to pay a super hero like Hiram to install that valve for you.

Great movie, I have a slightly different problem. I am from Poland and unfortunately our mechanics do not know this gearbox as you do in the USA. My car is Chevy Uplander 2006 3.5v6. Chest when it's cold works fine. When it warms up, it shifts from 4 to 3 for a moment and turns to 4. Everything runs smoothly. There is no error in the computer. After connecting the computer while driving, you can rigidly lock the lock up and the car drives normally. I replaced the solenoids, regenerated the converter. It didn't do anything, maybe he locks up earlier, but he drops it every now and then. So far, no mechanic has recognized the fault. Can you guess what it might be? Will you help?

I have come across a 2006 Chevy uplander wheelchair van for sale with 250,000 miles on it. They are selling it for $2,500. It was used as a transport vehicle for patients from an agency for the aged to and from doctors appointments. The agency states that it's mostly highway miles. I had a friend look at it for me came up with this transmission code. The transmission has been services twice. The last time was four years ago. Thoughts? I am just concerned since we travel on the highway a lot of the transmission going out. Thank you!

I have a 2004 Chevy impala 121K 3.4 liter. If your getting that ! 811 Longshift code but it's still running fairly well how long could it possibly last? takes an extra second or 2 to go into 3rd. It's smoother when I give it a lil more gas. Because I'll clear the code which does not trigger the check engine light and the code does not come back often but eventually comes back all the time. I put in some Lube guard and Lucas Non Slip which has improved the shifting a bit. This has been going on for almost a year and it's still running fairly good. Could it last a couple more months? Or years or do you think I will lose drive sooner or later? TY for sharing the video. Very helpful and informative. When you have time if you could respond I would appreciate it. Thanks again. 👍🏻

NO change . Now it wont shift into 2nd it will hang between 1st and 2nd if I go fast enough in 1st or go into 2nd for an instance but goes back to 1st or hangs between 1st and 2nd almost instantly If it does shift into 2nd it will shift 2-3.3-4, perfectly, any ideas?

Excellent material Hiram. I can tell you are in a productive environment, probably with a few things needing to be done aside from making a video of your work. I like the way you show each part to the camera as you remove it. If you do get the chance to work late or on a weekend so you could take your time and include all those small details along the way, I'm certain your viewers would appreciate it. It's not easy to do a non-scripted video like this. With 24 years in the industry, you make it appear fairly simple. I'm looking for the assembly process for this unit on your channel, but I don't see it. Did you complete the rebuild and not have time to film it? If I lived near you, I would volunteer my time to be your sound and video guy for a few days just to get your knowledge out there... out here... where it should be. Transmission shops treated their business like a closely guarded government secret back in the days when I was a Driveability and diagnostics tech where every other automotive shop was more willing to share the knowledge.
My deepest gratitude goes your way for doing this... Thanks!!

    • @YTInnovativeSolution
      @YTInnovativeSolution 8 років тому +1

+Hiram Gutierrez Hey bud.. I'd really like to thank you for your feedback and helpful knowledge. If I had cash, I would have already sent it your way. But.. I do have a wonderful collection of transmission documents, build manuals, and such.. If I spend the time uploading to a fileshare site, would you be willing to grab a copy for yourself and possibly supply others with the links..? My own journey into the data search was when I stumbled across someone's private server - hosting the 4T65e rebuild manual and the 4T65GRN manual which details the difference of internal parts from specific years.. Then... I found a gold mine on a torrent site :-)
Knowing this info is proprietary and very expensive to acquire (depending on method of acquisition of course) - I feel that most of it should be freely available to the DIY builder and anyone interested in your career.
I also have a lot of pics from my own rebuild that I really should invest some quality time into getting them out there too. Nifty lil pics like which bolts to remove if you need to pull the valve body, but not the oil pump..
If you ever come across a GM HD input shaft, I'm your buyer! If you come across any other make of HD input shaft for the 4T65E - I'm still your buyer.
You're awesome Hiram!! Thanks again for sharing...

I have a question about why the 4T65-E wears out. I own a chevy venture and know that the fans don't turn on until about 220 deg F. I think they designed it this way so the engine will produce less NOX gases, but not sure. In the old cars, the radiator fans are on all the time and vary with engine RPM. Some radiator fans turn on around 185 to 195 deg F. There are fan controllers that can be installed in my chevy venture to turn the fan on between 185 and 195 deg F. I'd like to know what your opinion is about this based on your many years of experience. Would the transmission last much longer if the radiator fans turn on at 185 to 195 deg F, instead of 220 deg F.

    • @1Sonicsky1
      @1Sonicsky1 5 років тому

The fans would do little to reduce the heat within the transmission aside from when you are sitting still. Have an aftermarket transmission cooler installed if you are concerned about it running too hot. Just make sure you still include the one built into your radiator in the loop, as it needs to remain at a minimum temp to perform properly in cooler weather.

Hiram I have an 07 Saturn Ion with the 4T45E and it has reverse and second gear only. When it's going forward, it starts out in second and stays in second. No shifting. When letting up on the gas, it idles down and coasts like in neutral. Does this car have a limp mode that does that or is the transmission shot? What inside the transmission would cause that?

maybe i can help you, the P0742 code is considered a general code and is caused by the computer seeing less than a 200rpm difference between the input shaft and the torque converter when going less than 30mph. now the P1188 is a O2 sensor problem of sorts, which has nothing to do with the tranny. are you sure it was a p1188?

I have this problem with my 2004 Pontiac Montana. It only happens (hard thumping shifts) when I have to step on the brakes to quick/estop. I have found that if I just pulse the brakes for a gradule, normal stop. I never have the issue and can go weeks or longer without it happening. The next hard stop causes it all again until I pull over and turn the van off, and then it resets itself . Can you give me any advice as to what needs fixed. I would really like to talk to you more about it. I am not sure where your shop is located, but I hope that it is nearby for a repair, I live in Pennsylvania.

What are the differences between the 4T65E and the 4T65E HD version?.
I have 2 2004 Pontiac grand prix 's. One is a GT while the other is a GTP . My GTP transmission fluid is brown and while driving normally, by the time I get 1/2 way to town (18km = 1/2 way )the trany temp is 132 °F. When i arrive in town the temp has climbed to 184°F. I am in the process of checking the fluid transfer lines to the cooler for blockage ,restriction . I'm believing that the 4t65e HD needs to be rebuilt . 218000 Km on odometer. But all the shifts are fine .And no codes are showing. There is heavy ool soaking on the passenger side of engine's pulley and belt systems. Power steering pump hose's saturated with dirt& oil ,.
Valve cover gasket needs replacement as does pass tranny output shaft seal .
Will swapping the other transmission from the GT interface with the computer?

my O3 Impala has p1811 code. It was shifting hard but after a fluid change and adding lucas oil now it's better. It actually runs ok except when the fluid gets hot, then it whines a bit and is very sluggish...and when hot it sometimes kicks into 4th instead of a smooth shift. Basically all the problem only occur once the fluid is hot. What does that indicate?

hiram I have a question is the 4t65e tranny front wheel drive the same inside as the all wheel drive version the one on your bench is an front wheel drive and I have to replace one of the bands that the end broke off I took the oil pan off to replace the filter then I saw the piece of band sticking out the bottom under the trany the car has only 50 thousand miles on it and the reason I took the oil pan off was because I lost 3rd and drive I was able to take off in low gear then put it on drive then it would drive ok till I stop I just drove a few miles till I got home

Ok I got to the fourth clutch, and I didn’t find any nylon disc rings” everything was metal,. At first I thought it was because it was a 4t65e-HD.....then I started to see specks of burnt and broken plastic pieces falling out between them” it was practically metal to medal.....
I decided to rebuild it as soon as I seen pieces of burnt material inside the transmission pan....I was hoping it was a pieces of gasket, material from the valve body.....but nope the gaskets was intact.....when I pulled off the valve body and it’s case.....I took a look at the forth clutch packs....to my horror they were very burnt nylon pieces.....so I’m going to tear the unit down, forth great was running on chunks of clutch pack material.
Another issue was the needles out of a bearing fell out.
Thanks for your video....you saved me from installing a worn out transmission.

@james bachour I never tried that…I know you can replace the clutch packs, and Fwd, and reverse bands….with the transmission in the car….I will take a look at a Disassembled 4t65-E and broad cast a video on it.

@23:30 very nice to see some wet-air testing on a valve body for once, even though technically it's actually the channel plate you're testing. I was starting to wonder if it was actually a test used in the real world, or just some BS theory that looks good on paper, but falls short in practice.

Sounds awesome. Especially looking forward to the hydraulic and mechanical portions. I like Sonnax's vacuum testing set-up too, as well as their portable flow meter, the SonnaFlow, even though I don't have either one of those. Maybe one of these days I'll have both. Course thinkin about it now, I may wind up coming down with a case of tool fever and ordering both of them, LOL.

The real issue with this transmission is that it is a GM 4T65E - aka the biggest POS GM ever produced. I currently own an '05 Impala 9C1 that had this piece of junk replaced 20,000 miles before I bought the car, and 22,000 miles later, the differential and gearbox sections are both in trouble. I have driven the car easy and never abused it. This poor excuse of a transmission is one of many prime examples why GM needed a bailout. I will never buy another GM product built after 1993.
