always give the cam gear a wiggle to make sure there is a slight bit of movement they have plus 1 and minus 1 gears. there must be a little movement on the gear lash. its a feel thing.
Thanks man. Yeah I was worried the gears were going to be tight or the cam might try to walk out and I would have to do more research and order more parts!! Luckily the gears were happy with each other. The V Dub gods were upon me that day. 🤣
That intimidates me. But I hope to get into a full build one day. Never done the bottom end. I need a new case for the bus so eventually I will need to do it.
Brother I know you could do it! Same here though, won’t be building another unless it’s with a new case…hard to find and disrespectfully expensive. Dub on San Diego🤙🏼
@@bomberobus jaaa. Thanks bud. I will for sure give it a try. I running a bug case on my bus right now which requires an adaptor and it’s mounted to the oil pump cover so that’s not good. Gonna run this one for now until I need to change it. I think the crank bearings are shot. Jaaa we’ll see
Been looking into engines and yeah you are right. It's gonna cost me $4k and up to build something high performance from scratch. I think I might just do what you did and get a new cam and bearings. Keep my crank if it is still good and put some new main bearings. Hopefully my rods and bearings are still good. Honestly, it's just good to split the case and see what's going on in there. To see what is really wrong. Like I always say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Jaaaa!! Later I will go with a new case, crank and all that, but for now what you did should help improve the way my engine operates. I can always use the reuse the cam or leave it and just sell the engine as a rebuilt engine. Thanks for the inspiration Mike. Hope to get started on this project soon, so I will have a solid runner for the summer shows, camp outs and road trips.
No doubt prices have become stupid high! Yeah man, just enjoy the process. Split er open, reuse what you can. Those parts seem to be pretty tough and reusable. She might need an align bore but I know you’re in a good spot to have it done, unlike here 😑. But yeah just freshen it up with a minimalist approach and you might be surprised how good she goes. Much respect for how much you dub and DIY!
The oil galleys were a match On the one I just built from scratch. However, the one you’re talking about did have a slight size difference that I wish we would’ve blueprinted. Buuuuut, there hasn’t been any ill effects from not doing it either, thus far. If I was at that spot again though I’d go ahead and match the oil galleys with some dremel work.
hey m. i'm putting another cooling vid together with a cam focus and i thought i'd like to use the 110 cam for an example. i thought you had a 110 and i was right. so for the discussion how does your 110 respond at 65 mph and what are your rpms at that speed, r&p of trans, rear tire size? good torque? how about when you're in town and putting along at 2k rpm? i also saw below in the comments that you think your cam specs out closer to a 100. how did you come up with that?
My man Scotty C! Apologies sir, I got way removed from UA-cam for awhile….nothing bad. Glad to hear from you. That cam went in my brother’s Bug so I’ll se if we can arrange an interstate run and try to answer…if I’m not too late, again…apologies.
no problem. yes, i had noticed that you hadn't posted in ages. i'm missing some of my favorite content when that happens! anyway, i ended up removing 95% of that portion of the content from the vid. just too much info. too much detail.
I got a question: so my 67 beetle makes the same sound your motor did. Did it make that noise right from start up or did the motor have to warm up a little before the noise came around
@@bomberobus Thanks man! Mine only makes the noise after it warms up a little so probably just a worn cam. 13000 miles later including a trip halfway across the country and back and she’s still kicking
We’ve ran it daily since that vid (with some spirit) and all good still. Looking back, might’ve blue printed the passages a bit, but it is also good to know that it hasn’t been a problem by not doing that. It’s how we learn🤷🏻♂️
That cam was actually off a bit and the grind was closer to being a 100. The bigger surprise is that the 1679cc is still going strong as a SINGLE RELIEF CASE….with bigger valves and dual 40’s. This is how I learn😎
If I did a engine tear down , all the way down to the crank and rods . It would have driven me CRAZY not to pull the rods to check out the bearings , but that's just me . With the dual carbs and 110 cam , I would have given her the gas a lot more 😁
The “push-pull” test showed they was aight LOL. I feel you though, we honestly didn’t think it was gonna keep running this long and we’d be back in it for something. Also I think his foot has grown heavier since that vid
My dog doesn't like cars. Is first ride he was taken from family. Is second trip he was stuck a few times. His third took his junk away. Now he just barks at cars. Lol

Oh and I noticed the size difference on the oil galleys on the oil pump, did your case have small or large oil galleys to match the pump?

#3 has a dowel for arctic area Volkswagens back in the day. #3 was split just like #2 still is.
That’s cool! I always wondered why some had it and others did not. Thanks Co Lin
Where do I purchase quality ring sets for my stock '73 1600 Dual port motor?
Whenever I think of best quality, I think of CB Performance.

Surprised you guys didn't blueprint or modify the oil pump,to get more oil flowing into the heads.
We just didn’t think about it. Now that you’ve suggested it , I’ll look into doing that in the future!🤔
@@bomberobus
Check out EZGZ channel, on how to modify the oil pump, or other vw's how to channels. I wished these videos were available 20 years ago.😕
yeah man , Chilton's was our "UA-cam"

Wow thats pretty cam for a mild engine. Good luck . Hell , I guess it worked out cause this is a old vid. Cheers
