    just watched your video. for `waxing our bottoms' we use an old electric fry pan with about a quarter of an inch of heated paraffin wax, set your mugs in this and it gives a nice even ring. a trick I learned years ago...you put out great videos, I keep leaning things every day.. thanks bob

      I use the same method, be sure to rotate your work 180 degrees in the wax in case the frying pan is not level

    ya , underglaze how general of a paint can you uses ink , regular painters acrylic ,..etc because the glass-like glaze is just sealing it so its not in contact with the human. Obviously lead based paint or other things you wouldn't want to paint with. But how general can your underglaze be can you go to a local hardware store and just pickup an random paint to paint with before you glaze it. Or does it require a special paint that won't melt in a kiln just not sure.

    I appreciate your insight on why using water with your sanding, however, wouldn't you still want to wear a dust mask?

  • @retsylauer6378

    Instead of sanding waz resist off, try using a diamond tip dremel it is much easier & quicker

    Maybe I missed it but why wax the bottoms as opposed to leaving them unfinished? I know you can't glaze the bottom of a pot because it will stick but does the wax leave it shiny or something?

    • @destinycooper6064
      @destinycooper6064 6 років тому +1

      Late reply! But you just don't want to get glaze on the bottom in the first place because it can be difficult to get it all off the bottom if you get it on there accidentally. Some people prefer not to use it at all but if you want to dip your pot with tongs instead of holding it by the foot to dip then it's good to use because it won't stick to the bottom and is much easier to wipe it off of wax.

    Do you know if the burning wax creates fumes in the studio? At the place where I do ceramics, they don't allow using wax because they fear it will make fumes.

      I use a carpet square in my sink dampened with water so you just rub the bottom of the pot on the carpet and this takes off 99% of your glaze and then just sponge of the little tiny bit left. It leaves a very clean and even bottom.

    *I live in a tiny 2 bedroom flat in Scotland, I would love to be able to do this but I can’t afford a kiln. Is that anyway to do pottery at home?*

      I can give you my two cents if you want to know one humble opinion.
      It’s hard but not impossible. I have a lady that will fire for me but I do have to pay for it. And keeping everything clean is hard but I have a table in my room and work on small things. However I am ready to go to the garage just so I don’t have to vacuum the floor three times a day.🙂

    Was it that expensive when you purchased it? Thanks for your feedback.

      The glazes vary depending on the surface and color that I am trying to achieve but they are basically a combination of silica, clay, oxides and minerals. I have some glaze recipes on ClayShare.com under resources if you want to check them out!

    Great video! What is the price range for your firing ovens, and would they be reasonable for a hobbyist potter?
    Cheers,

      Hi Nathan, kilns can be a bit pricey but you can often find good used ones for sale on Craigslist. It is an investment but if you love working in ceramics it is totally worth it! Another option is to join a community clay center then you can use their kilns and equipment. :)
