I recently experienced my first pottery class, i never could have imagined how much effort it takes to make a simple pot. My admiration for your work has increased tenfold!
Thank you for this insight into glazing and the meticulous detail for finishing each piece to give the very best effect. I glaze my first thrown pots tomorrow....I'll try to remember at least some of the tips you've given. Very inspirational for me to try and be as tidy as possible!
Great video. Am in a class where we don't dip, so brush application only. I use a 1 inch hake brush for most. Would so like to be able to dip & clean up as you do. Loved seeing all your steps in the order you approach them. What a large body of work! Best of luck with your sale. I am not even gonna try this time, as last time, against all strategies, i was shut out in seconds. Happy you are successful!
This video was lovely!! I’m a new pottery, just as a hobby, but glazing is far and away my favorite part of the process because it really brings everything together and can be so transformative. How do you decide which form gets which glaze? And what’s your approach to only using about 3 glazes overall, and always doing one solid application for each form? I’m fascinated by the beautiful minimalistic methodology with which you approach your work!
You have absolutely exquisite standards that I hope to keep in my own pottery. I love watching your processes, it’s so relaxing! The carving is my favourite 🙈 Thankyou for all the hard work you do to make these videos ☺️
Loved this video! It might be too technical for this channel, but I'd love to see a video about reclaiming your glaze water someday - as in, how do you ensure you have the right ratio of glaze particles to water. Do you measure the specific gravity, weigh your glaze reclaim, something else? I'm so curious. Anyway, thanks for all your work - I'm definitely a better potter for your videos.
4:10 UA-cam closed captions thinks that the glazes are made from feldspar and "Nephilim cyanide". I thought that sounded wrong, so I searched online and found nepheline syenite which makes a lot more sense. 😂 Wanted to share that here just in case anyone else is watching with auto-generated captions on.
They are so beautiful! I bet your guests were over the moon! I wish I'd been a Potter when I got married. Can I ask if you have a recipe for the beautiful Jade glaze if you don't mind sharing? I understand if not 😊 Thank you ❤😂
Florian what type of music do you listen to whilst going through the long process of cleaning up and tidying? Thank you for another premium educational, satisfying video.
All kinds! But usually with tasks like this it’s audiobooks and podcasts that are me through the process. At the moment I’m listening to the Three Body Problem trilogy again-unbelievable story!
Thank you! Indeed I have. A few leaks in the studio, buckets collecting water and some surprise puddles… will be calling my landlord to figure them out.
I doesn’t seem to make much of a difference with this glaze, whilst it definitively did make a difference with a metallic matte black glaze I was using earlier this year.
Would you mind sharing where you get your beautiful unusual clay? I have never seen that color of bisque. It looks peachy pink from my viewpoint? Thanks Paula
Can your glazes be brushed on? I thought brushing was less work than dipping. I only just thought about turning in a horizontal axis, like a standard lathe, to reduce runs by gravity. I also wonder if there is an alternative more viscous suspension solution that enable thicker or more controllable coatings. I hope to be buying Christmas gifts from you soon.
1:58 Don't know why, for a millisecond, I thought you were going to taste test it like a broth. That just seemed to be the next step to that motion for my brain.
Can you get a wax that like carbonizes? Something that forms a barrier in the clay surface without flowing and sticking like a glaze? I suppose any carbon would burn off and anything like ash would be like a glaze. Are there any exceptions?
At least it’s highly recommended to wear one. The dust is not good for the lungs and having the glaze so close to the face increases the risk of breathing it in. He mentioned that for longer periods of time he does wear one
glazing in pottery is really my favorite thing to watch haha. the drastic color change after firing is so amazing to see.

I am learning so much from your videos Florian. You are a fabulous teacher and explain so well. Thank you.
can’t wait to see all the larger things out of the kiln!!!

Thank you for a very relaxed but comprehensive tutorial. I will endeavour to be more mindful when completing my pieces.🙂

I was struggling with this in pottery class last week and this is precisely the information I needed. Thank you.
You have absolutely exquisite standards that I hope to keep in my own pottery. I love watching your processes, it’s so relaxing! The carving is my favourite 🙈 Thankyou for all the hard work you do to make these videos ☺️
This is great. Thanks so much! I love how organized you are.

Thank you for sharing 👍
Thank you for an excellent video explaining the process
there are quite a good amount of interesting looking glazes on that pile of test tiles
I paint mine with a paint brush. I don't have a shop so I make maybe 5 pots a month with hand-building. I feel that it looks really clean that way.
Amazing
14:16 Always makes me nervous when you start carrying the laden shelves around 😬😳

@@floriangadsby Oooh I will have to take that as a recommendation!
Very helpful
I love the look of them prior to glazing, I wonder if it’s possible to add a finish that maintains that look
that was awesome. have you been getting all this rain where you are Florian? it's been biblical here.
Thank you! Indeed I have. A few leaks in the studio, buckets collecting water and some surprise puddles… will be calling my landlord to figure them out.
@@floriangadsby no major problem though at least.
Is there any sort of finish on your boards? Thank you for these amazing videos!
Can we see the dog??? I can spot it at 1:45
Hi Florian! Do you wash your bisque ware before glazing? Or find it doesn’t make much of a difference with the glaze?
I doesn’t seem to make much of a difference with this glaze, whilst it definitively did make a difference with a metallic matte black glaze I was using earlier this year.
everything on your website sold out, How can i buy from you? 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Would you mind sharing where you get your beautiful unusual clay? I have never seen that color of bisque. It looks peachy pink from my viewpoint? Thanks Paula
Excellent presentation..... But, why do we need more and more pots? (Serious question). Thanks
Why do we need more films? Music? Art? Clothes? Woodwork?

Haha! I have accidentally tasted it before. White glaze just tastes gritty and stoney. The red iron oxide ones taste like, well, you can guess.
Do you wash and/or sand your pots after bisque before waxing? How do you prepare the bisque for glazing (besides wax)?
What is the advantage of waxing the base of the pots versus simply wiping them off after glazing?
Can you get a wax that like carbonizes? Something that forms a barrier in the clay surface without flowing and sticking like a glaze? I suppose any carbon would burn off and anything like ash would be like a glaze. Are there any exceptions?
The wax does burn off.
Hello , I need to clean the wax part before cooking ?
Nope. Burns off in the kiln
Should you wear a mask when cleaning the glaze from the pots?
At least it’s highly recommended to wear one. The dust is not good for the lungs and having the glaze so close to the face increases the risk of breathing it in.
He mentioned that for longer periods of time he does wear one
Can I Order 😀😀
don't you clear the dust before glazing..thank you..
Isn’t it dangerous for your health using bare hands to mix glaze instead of using gloves?
