    Jessica, this is a very educational video on using luster, so much good instruction and guidance here! And I'm glad you gave the type of your kiln (Skutt, me too) and the cone to which you fire, and that you preheat for an hour! You're an awesome pottery instructor!

    You can also use very fine grit sandpaper to get rid of purple mistakes! It won’t scratch the glaze

    You really should set up a ventilation system for your Kiln some of the fumes that come off a different glazes are very toxic.

    Wait. Is the luster acceptable for food contact or not. There is not a 'ok for special ocations' safety rating. The manufacture must stat one way or the other not a 'sometimes'.

    Hi, Jessica!.. Love your video!.. I'm fairly new to the ceramic world and will be venturing my first attempt with luster!.. I have a small Skutt Firebox kiln and I'm curious as to the proper settings to do this. You had mentioned a 1 hour preheat, medium, and at cone 017. Are you programming in a Hold as well...? I'm applying it to glazed ceramic pendants. If I'm just accenting the front of the pendant can I set it on the kiln shelf itself. I figured because of the much lower cone I wouldn't have to be concerned about the already glazed piece fusing to the kiln... Would that be a correct assumption...? Thank you and I look forward to your response!.. :)

    Is there a way I can touch up the gold luster on some antique tea sets without having to use a kiln but still have the same finishing effect? I was hand washing some of my tea sets and I must have scrubbed too hard because I noticed some of the gold luster started fading in some areas. I've looked everywhere online and haven't found a solution T.T please help!

    Can you help with a botched attempt? I added gold luster over a glaze called gold. Followed your instructions and the piece is not shiny, looks like dull bronze, except in a few stops. Looks like a bad glazing job but the piece is only 1" square. wish I could send photo. Your video gave me the courage to to do this for first time and I was so happy to find it. Thank you, I love all your videos!!

      Hi Melissa, the key to achieving a glossy luster finish is to apply it over a glossy glaze. The luster will have the same finish as whatever it is applied to. I am not familiar with the Gold glaze you used but if you want to send me an image via Facebook(you may have to friend me first) I will be happy to look at it. I am so glad to hear that my video encouraged you to give luster a try. Keep at it and I know you will get the results you are after. Best, Jessica

    Can you tell me how to apply mother of pearl? Does it need essence applied first? If so do I let it dry before applying the mother or pearl? And is one layer the best? I heard that it should not be over applied. The last two firings my mother of pearl was dull. I fired at 019 fast speed in my small skutt kiln. Thank you for your help.

    i have a question, i am doing writing on a plate. i was needing to know if i can use a fine tip marker or pen to write on the plate and put the gold over it. will the marker burn off or will the gold cover it or should i just free hand the gold on the plate? i am writing names on the plate and i just want to make sure i get the gold super correct on the plate.

    • @JessicaPutnamPhillips
      @JessicaPutnamPhillips  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can use a pen to write on the plate an it should burn off. Check this website out www.thegoodstuff.com she sells everything for china painting and luster and may have a marker specifically for using with gold over it.

    Hi! I am getting back into ceramics and I would like to get really vibrant red, green, and blue colors and I also plan on adding duncan gold luster to my pieces. The kiln I have access to is a gas kiln, can i still achieve those results in a gas kiln ?

    • @JessicaPutnamPhillips
      @JessicaPutnamPhillips  6 років тому +1

      yes, you can achieve good colors in a gas kiln but you'll have to fire the luster to a lower temp. There is a whole other method of getting luster from glazes which are reduction fired to cone 9-10. Check out the work of Beatrice Wood, she was amazing and did gas fired lusters.
