Petrol Mercedes A200 vs Electric Peugeot E-308: Same price, VERY different cars

  • A budget of £40,000 will buy you a very decent family car. However, aside from choosing what make or model you want, first you need to decide whether it should be petrol, electric, hybrid or diesel.
Within that choice, there's no escaping the fact that electric cars are still expensive relative to petrol, and nowhere is this illustrated better than in today's CarGurus UK head-to-head video, where the fully electric Peugeot E-308 meets the recently updated petrol Mercedes A-Class.
Both of our contenders are in top-spec trim, and both cost the same. With Peugeot's push to go upmarket, can it really take on the Mercedes for interior quality and equipment? And can the mild-hybrid 1.3-litre petrol engine in the Mercedes match the performance and refinement of its EV rival? Vicky Parrott puts both cars to the test, and the results might just surprise you.

The test didn't mention the Mercedes's much superior range of 400 miles plus vs the Peugeot's test range of 200 miles. And that's not to mention the Merc needing only 3 minutes to fill up, instead of the 40 minutes plus time need for the Peugeot's just to get to 80% charge. Either way, both cars are way too expensive.

      Statistically, you're absolutely right.
However, in actual use, no-one would (should...) drive the 400 miles that the MB is capable of in one go - at the average recorded UK motorway speed of 59mph, that'd be over 6 1/2 hours non-stop driving, the equivalent of driving from London to Edinburgh without a pee-break...!
So, in reality, most people would drive maybe 3 hours / 180ish miles then take a 30 minute comfort break to grab food, coffee, catch up on emails etc etc
Whilst the MB driver would have their car sat idle in the the car park, the Peugeot driver would have plugged their car in to a rapid charge point to let it 're-fuel' whilst they're inside the services doing exactly the same as the MB driver during that 30 minute break - then, both would set off again for the next 180ish mile leg of their journey.
It just takes a change of mind-set to drive an EV...
      👍

      @Kelveron 6 місяців тому +1

Fair points. One other point about car with a bigger range is the fact it needs fewer times to fill up/charge, whbich means less hassel. Of course, if you're an EV driver and lucky enough to have a home charger, driving mainly short distances, then that's not much of an issue.

    1. Both a ridiculous price when you consider what that sort of money could buy. 2. Go on a road trip in each and you'd soon realise the Mercedes is a much more interesting drive. 3. Spend 2/3 the amount of money and get even more agility in a Fiesta or Focus. But you can't buy a Fiesta you might say. That's OK you can get a 2nd hand Fiesta for even less money and have a lot of money left over for even more fun doing other things. 4. When ever I've driven EV (which is not much) I find half the charging units are faulty. No I wouldn't buy either.

These last 12 months or so have seen used EV values tumble, sure - but that was simply the market 're-setting' since, during the latter stages of the pandemic, most used EVs were selling for near list price.
Back in late 2020, I sold my 2016 Nissan Leaf for £100 MORE than I bought it for, despite having owned it for 2 years and putting an extra 20,000miles on it...!
If you Google average depreciations for, for example, the typical rep-mobile BMW 320d vs the EV equivalent Tesla Model 3, then both lose approximately 40% of their value over the first 3 years.

The EVs are a disaster for the planet, for plenty of reasons! Your comment is typical, now think and analyse the situation:
      - rare metals and raw materials for the batteries and other electric components, their extraction, refinery, production of components, think of the amount of energy required, chemicals, water..., and their impact on the environment, not to mention social impact.
      - now you have for sure heard about microparticules, and their danger for us humans, guess what, the major parts of such comes from tire wear&tear. Hand you know which vehicle has the biggest tires and the heaviest weight?! EV, it has already been proven that the amount of microparticules produced by EV are superior to what an equivalent ICE does.
      - now think about recycling such EV, guess what, like for the supposedly fantastic wind mills, nothing has been thought and the materials used will have a bigger impact on the environment if you recycle them than just ditching them under hearth, shall they want to intend the process (energy required, chemicals needed...) So think in the long term!
      - finally, sure your ev does not have an exhaust, but think about how your electricity is produced and what is its impact on the environment, the problem is just displaced but still exists, and it's an even worsen situation as there is much less control over electric power plant exhausts than on normal ICE.
