What stands out for me after watching loads of your videos is that to a large extent buying a good used car requires a huge slice of luck, and if someone like yourself with all your knowledge ends up buying a lemon, what chance do us ordinary punters have
This model of A class is really underrated, and I really agree with you that they are one of the best small (ish) cars on the road. The room inside the car makes it like a TARDIS. Matt, you need to get your mechanic to give you a list of parts then buy them from GSF, you'll save a few bob.

At least you did take a small profit in the end, the car cleaned up really nice and as you did the final exterior shots I kept thinking someone will get a really nice car for their money with no unexpected surprises (as you fixed it properly). I actually prefer the current A Class to this one. This one is ugly. It's like Mercedes-Benz couldn't decide whether they wanted to make this car round or boxy, and they just settled for both.
I bought the older model 4 months old from a car rental company after the summer, auto and dark red. Great service for 4 years, them bought by my father in law for and sold by him after another 4. Fair price achieved after 8 years. No complaints from either of us. Being an ex rental car, it was a Classic or basic model. Put in a radio with CD (I knew how to live back then😊) with my model only having single DIN slot. Thanks for the great video, yet again.
My sister has 160d so I drove it plenty of times and I like it. Yes it is stupid slow, but it looks nice, has plenty of space, it is comfortable and so far it has been extremely reliable (has over 120 000 miles). Even the manual gearbox doesn't suck. Too bad about this car, bounce back next one, mate.
Matt, thanks for saving this one. I have a previous shape W168 A160 LWB. The leg room in the rear is insanely large. Back seats completely remove, even the front passenger seat, you could sleep in it if you wanted. A very smart package, and a great city car. Look after the gearbox with regular fluid changes, and fresh engine oil every year or 10,000km. It won't be fun to change things like water pump, alternator, or starter motor (if and when they go) or serpentine belt, but with a ramp most things can be done by the home mechanic. A clever car that was meant to bring younger buyers to the brand, but instead the senior citizens loved it. It was killed off in about 2010 with the W169 (the same shape as your one here Matt) and over 1 million examples made. I'll keep driving the wombat as long as it keep going (wombat, because it is grey, flat nosed, and slow). Many who poke fun at the car have never ridden in one or owned one. Keep fighting the good fight Matt.

The rear seats and sometimes the passenger seat are removable and that flat floor make it an excellent transporter. Picked up an Alfa 3 litre V6 in mine too - like a van. The front ARB mounts needed changing more frequently than the oil (maybe that clunk).

Very nice at the end. As already been stated, this generation looks far better then the new ones. As far as I see it, they degraded the car, as it was a little, cute and a bit awd Mercedes, but now it has noghting at all, it is just another car.

Don’t think they are xenons, but halogen projectors. Should have washers for the xenons and no height adjustment for the lights when they’re xenon. Looks like a smart little car though, I like these era A Class!
I love your dry humour Matt! In general avoid old Mercedes and BMW cars. They always costs a lot more than you expect. I would price it a bit higher, you can always explain to the potential buyer all the trouble you took to make it in good shape again, anyway that's why I would do.
It is a cute little car, I certainly agree that the colour does grow on the viewer, part way into the video, I did start to like it myself. Anyway as usual Matt, you’ve made this car the best example it can be within reason, hopefully your next one will earn a profit for you😊.
Love these videos were you lose or at best break even 🙈 as a small business owner myself people think your pulling cash from every hole available and don’t take in to consideration the losses we go through. Really insightful. Keep plugging away as I tell myself next month I will hit the big one lol. I am thinking about changing my career and becoming your mechanic he seems to be the only one who ever benefits here.
I don't think the Autotrader markers mean an awful lot. See a lot of cars up near me marked as 'High price' and they still sell quickly. To be honest, might well get a few people coming in trying to chip it down (which you'll always get regardless), but when someone sees the car is good and that little bit extra is justified, there'll always be a deal to be done.
Quite well known, actually, the Sailun Atrezzo's. Halfords/National are quite big on them at the moment. They're round, rubbery, and have "tread", so they will function as tyres.
Never heard of them. Apparently they're made by a Chinese company called Mesnac. Seems to be cheaper alternatives to many of the tires offered here in the US.
I like this used car dealer. Saving cars that are 90ish% ok from the scrap yard to drive again. Just do them a bit more cost conscious. Keep up the good work.
One of Mercedes best designed cars in terms of manoeuvrability and interior space . I quite like the colour though at my age I would . I think it came out quite nicely and I would ask £3,200 for it . A panoramic sunroof would really have clinched it for me .
Yes, win some lose some but the person buying this A class will now get a great little sorted car. You will get superb feedback, good recommendations resulting in more customers buying your stock. That is a win.
Yes, I have heard of Sailun tyres - usual cheap Chinese rubbish that should be illegal. In a wet braking test on tyrereviews it came 44th out of 45 tyres. Only Star was worse
For info, the tiny little Mercedes booklet you found in the glovebox looks like the fusebox diagram. This should live in the battery/fusebox compartment under the drivers side floormat. The fuseholders have no markings on these so without the booklet you don't know which fuse is which or what power rating they should be.
My Dad had a much later one of these - 2018 model I think - in black auto diesel. Last autumn he changed it for an Audi Q2 diesel auto which he hates. He says he never appreciated the build quality of a Merc never having had one before - I pointed out that he had moved from Merc to a VW product with fancy badges......
Actually have this as my first car (A160 1.5 elegance). These are cheap to insure and they are spacious inside with a nice interior if you don't have the classic
One of the Best Cars in my Opinion Mercedes ever produced. Fuel Economy and Comfort at the Same Time and a lot of Space. The A180CDI Engine is unbrokabel with the right maintance. Only Problem is the Audio 5 CD Radio which uses the Battery in the Background if its Broken. Great Video and Overview of the Car.
Lucky you have the Diesel. Our petrol A Class does about 9.5L per 100km around town - very thirsty. On the highway is much better, gets about 6.5L per 100km. Automatic gearbox broke a while ago and cost a small fortune to fix. Many other problems with it aswell 😢
@@def90cars I’ve always wondered about that. If they have the same engine specs, why do they call them different names - A160CDI, A180CDI and A200CDI? What does the name actually relate too - it’s obviously not engine capacity?
@@NicholasRiviera-Dr I believe Mercedes started this sometime in the early 2000s. It’s a way to create different models without having to engineer different engines. The 160, 180 and 200 have roughly the horsepower of a 1.6, a 1.8 and a 2.0 of the time. It wasn’t unusual for manufacturers to use a slightly different number to the real capacity for marketing reasons (BMW 318iS was 1.9), but this was the start of manufacturers using the same engine with different horsepower to replicate different capacities.
I bought a 98 model off a private dealer as a runaround, it was like new with one owner on 68k, but it clonked when pulling away, he said it was my driving, I new it was an engine mounting, I had it a year and would have kept it until it was knackered but my wife needed a auto, I pxd it for 1700.they are great little cars and still look modern.
Brilliant cars them A class's Matt, have sold loads in my time, the 1.5 and 1.7 petrol CVT's sell like hot cakes, especially the Avantgarde SE with self park 🤓so much so that I can't seem to get close to buying them at auction anymore even when I have customers waiting for them, must be the fast approaching Ulez no doubt. Keep grinding Matt 👍👍
I have driven several of this type of A class and that driving position is one that i could never get used to. It coloured my view of the car it was that uncomfortable. On the other hand, my brother had one for years and absolutely loved it.
Lots of videos at the moment of cars i've had. The 2007 A150 auto in gold was only the 2nd new car I had, bought it as a family car, wasn't expecting much but it really was quite nice. The elevated driving position made it feel more like an SUV. Had it 3 years and changed it for a C63, bit different.
@7:38 is not a cup holder, you can see that directly in front of that. That panel slides forward and holds the Bluetooth gadget to connect to your phone
As always, a true insight into the joys of buying a "prestige" car. Great video, Matt, it is always a pleasure to hear the vast list of broken things on a Merc or similar, where the owner of the car who sold it appears to have less class than it does. I like your optimism as you roll into the car park, and here am I saying hmmm... Can't wait for the next, we need an older Alfa to compare the horrors of ownership costs compared to a mainstream car.
The a class is not a prestige car it’s the entry level version of a Mercedes basically a car for a person who aspires to a Mercedes but cannot afford to buy a proper Mercedes and really should of brought a ford or vauxhall and been able to afford to run it
The stuff that needed doing was mainly routine maintainance which the previous owner had neglected to do and you got lumbered! You remain quite sanguine about it all and we viewers love the "I brought a cheap *****" videos so not all bad!
We never got these in the US, and only a few Electric B Class in 2014/15. An American dealer - even a Mercedes dealer - would not repair any of the scratches or wheel scrapes you pointed out. You fix things like wipers and brakes and oil change that no American dealer would consider.
Wow! I was fascinated when I looked at some US dealer websites. Your cars have double the average UK mileage, maybe due to cheaper fuel. Even though you might still find it expensive 😂
To be honest, most UK dealers, even main dealers would not replace such things. But High Peak Autos realised that if you do show that you are trustworthy and actually DO sort as many things as possible then people will pay a higher price and buy from you. Quite a sensible and reasonable approach. It really angers me when I have looked at cars and no one has even bothered to top up the oil or pump up the tyres. Even main dealers. But I guess 99% of people do not even check or know how to check.
Hi Matt, recently bought a 10 year old mini countryman cooper S. 45K miles. Last 6 months it's been great. Ride is firm (aware you dislike that) but how comes you've not had one on the channel yet? I recommend!
Always hated these cars. Had one as a pool car for 9 months. I know what you mean about the driving position. After about 10 miles you have to adjust it. Another good video! Cheers.
Another great video and another car saved matt you should wear red underpants and a Cape supermatt saves another 👏 you always go the extra mile wish more traders would be as honest and upfront as you matt 👍

Your rare honesty in the car game being showcased in all your content is sure to pay you dividends. I'd certainly have no hesitation even to travel to purchase a car from High Peak Autos.👍
We like you Matt. If you want to be hated be a property salesman. They take zero risk and charge the earth. At least you put your money down and take the risk of making a loss.
Sadly finding any parts for that Automatic is a huge quest. 99% of A classes that end up parted out were these automatic diesels. Tho when the auto is working this is a wonderful machine to drive. I daily a A150 manual from 2005 a gasoline 1.5L engine. Uses 9L in city driving. You can park it eazy in any space and there is a lot of room in the back for passangers
Automatics always fail MOT tests for parking brake not meeting requirements and this is due to lack of use as most people just leave it on the park gear without the parking brake on.
Unfortunately had one of these once. Fortunately it was stolen. Unfortunately the police recovered it. Fortunately the insurance said I didn't have to have it back and paid out.
These videos are an advertising platform for car vertical but good on him ! I love these videos Matt, please keep them coming! As a video suggestion, maybe go through some of the stuff you look for when your buying used cars (outside of car vertical for example)? Genuinely curious on how you go about acquiring cars like this A Class
I had a 06plate 2.0 diesel with full Merc history and 64k on the clock for £700, I had it for a year and due to a v.large pot hole I has to sell it for scrap, I got £590!!!. I would've kept it, lovely little car.
I had the same car 2009 model as my first car, it was very practical but it was horrible to drive from seating position to being a low car and having a low fitted bumper which hits every bump, plus it was a Merc so having lights on the dash was a regular sight, I kept it for 2 years and sold it because later on I found out the gearbox was failing and needed to be replaced. I would not recommend it to anyone
When all is said and done it's not that often that you're out of pocket Matt. This era of Mercedes is not the best for sure. When Mercedes collaborate with an-other European manufacturer costs are cut as well as standards. Expect to get burnt on this era of Mercedes.
He won't be out of pocket when he receives his advertising fee from car vertical and good on him ! Very shrewd business idea ,, I would buy a car from him seems an honest guy , wouldn't put crap on his forecourt like Arthur Daley !

You had me at the Partridge quote! 😂👏👏
Great vid mate!
I'm not buying a mini metro Lynn
Don’t think they are xenons, but halogen projectors. Should have washers for the xenons and no height adjustment for the lights when they’re xenon. Looks like a smart little car though, I like these era A Class!
Not all cars with xenons had headlamp wash; that’s one for the pub trivia quiz. although you are right in this case.
Only Matt gets me excited about an old a class
Love these videos were you lose or at best break even 🙈 as a small business owner myself people think your pulling cash from every hole available and don’t take in to consideration the losses we go through. Really insightful. Keep plugging away as I tell myself next month I will hit the big one lol. I am thinking about changing my career and becoming your mechanic he seems to be the only one who ever benefits here.
Exactly right
I don't think the Autotrader markers mean an awful lot. See a lot of cars up near me marked as 'High price' and they still sell quickly. To be honest, might well get a few people coming in trying to chip it down (which you'll always get regardless), but when someone sees the car is good and that little bit extra is justified, there'll always be a deal to be done.
“Some more bonnet releases here” 😂😂 that shouldn’t of made me laugh as much as it did
I had a A class which I bought new when they first came out. I’ve never spent so much time at the dealers whilst i was being repaired.😢
Better was the opening “fold back” glass roof.
Math you have forgotten to factor in the upholstery bill !
You are doing a great job with integrity, we appreciate your work and videos
Yes, win some lose some but the person buying this A class will now get a great little sorted car. You will get superb feedback, good recommendations resulting in more customers buying your stock. That is a win.
Yes, I have heard of Sailun tyres - usual cheap Chinese rubbish that should be illegal. In a wet braking test on tyrereviews it came 44th out of 45 tyres. Only Star was worse
I’m hooked on these Matt!
For info, the tiny little Mercedes booklet you found in the glovebox looks like the fusebox diagram. This should live in the battery/fusebox compartment under the drivers side floormat. The fuseholders have no markings on these so without the booklet you don't know which fuse is which or what power rating they should be.
👍
My Dad had a much later one of these - 2018 model I think - in black auto diesel. Last autumn he changed it for an Audi Q2 diesel auto which he hates. He says he never appreciated the build quality of a Merc never having had one before - I pointed out that he had moved from Merc to a VW product with fancy badges......
Stopped production in 2012
I love this guys sense of humour! ❤
Your mechanic is looking fwd to an early retirement thanks to you. They see you coming.
Actually have this as my first car (A160 1.5 elegance). These are cheap to insure and they are spacious inside with a nice interior if you don't have the classic
Elegance is gorgeous, especially with beige interior.
@@A0111. Agreed. I got mine in Alpaca Grey
Engine is a absolute workhorse.
A160CDI, A180CDI and A200CDI all have the same 2 L engine in different specs.
Business must be booming, always new video content.
Enjoy watching them, your a proper grafter Matt.
I think the driving position is one of the benefits of this car. It’s actually very high from inside
Yes! it's an extender! Love the Alan Partridge references keep them coming
Congratulations on your new Mercedes A-Class! 🎉
Cheers.
Can we have some "headlamps could do with a buff" T-shirts please!?
And “ a new set of plates will set it off”
Another great video and another car saved matt you should wear red underpants and a Cape supermatt saves another 👏 you always go the extra mile wish more traders would be as honest and upfront as you matt 👍
Battery and fusebox lives under the driver's footwell, hence high feeling driving position, and the compartment often fills with water...
Matt,
Its great watching your videos they just seem to get better and better, you really should have your own slot on tv, keep the vids coming.
Great video! Thanks again for the lesson in staying positive!
I don't believe you'll be losing out in the long run.
Your rare honesty in the car game being showcased in all your content is sure to pay you dividends.
I'd certainly have no hesitation even to travel to purchase a car from High Peak Autos.👍
Thanks
We like you Matt. If you want to be hated be a property salesman. They take zero risk and charge the earth. At least you put your money down and take the risk of making a loss.
These are a hidden gems & if you get a good example - they are one to use as run around 👍
I just love the references he keeps making of city blue💙💙
We like honest used car salesmen just like yourself 👍🏾
He is so right. 'Nobody' likes car dealers. Most are just rip off merchants!
Not really a bad car, despite the bad press, then again my mother drives one, and she’s 80!!
It’s a 2009 1.5 petrol car, with 42000 miles.
Its a real talent making a interesting video with a old A class Diesel Auto!! Great work. 😂👍🏻
Unfortunately had one of these once. Fortunately it was stolen. Unfortunately the police recovered it. Fortunately the insurance said I didn't have to have it back and paid out.
These videos are an advertising platform for car vertical but good on him ! You would do the check before parting with any cash , very shrewd business idea , my brother in law was in the advertising industry made a fortune advertising Proton & Lada cars very luctrative advertising , but i would certainty buy a car from Matt seems an honest car dealer which is rare
I always like Matt's optimism...should be a healthy profit in it..😂
Three grand valuation onna 57 plate A class with nearly 100k on the clock. World's gone mad. £749 in pre artificially inflated car prices
I disagree. It’s auto, they always fetch a premium. Before the world went mad this was probably £2295. Now it’s sold for £3295
Lol I have that on my road when I let people go, flash them a 1000 times and then they notice a month later. Haha. Good video. Nice colour
With the right body kit you could get this to look like a Range Rover
I had the same car 2009 model as my first car, it was very practical but it was horrible to drive from seating position to being a low car and having a low fitted bumper which hits every bump, plus it was a Merc so having lights on the dash was a regular sight, I kept it for 2 years and sold it because later on I found out the gearbox was failing and needed to be replaced.
I would not recommend it to anyone
that is why you buy manual… not automatic 🤣🤣🤣
Note my first comment! I had to do front and rear parking sensors on one a year ago, what a PITA.
Swings and roundabouts my man.
Onwards and upwards 💪
The W168 and W169 A.Class are design icons, but as cars they are an acquired taste.
Good morning matt, hay now don't so down about it ,yes you over spent on it but you saved a nice car once again and someone will love it so well done. Ps the next one will be absolutely fantastic. Cheers Phil form Newark
Sailun tyres are reportedly the best budget tyre on the market. A league above than the Arrowspeed, West Lake and Autogreen brands.
Old man blue >> stake through the heart! 😂
Timpsons…🤔
Those A-classes look goofy but are relliable if you maintain them.
I love those wipers, i just dont know why xD
-Shame about the first aid kit xD
Great video as usual Matt! :D
You can see the First Aid kit @9:52. Just hasn’t been put away in the correct stowage location @10:11
Mine has reliability issues even though it’s been serviced regularly 😢
