Hi Rebeka. I saw them on this tour so I really appreciate the reaction. The thing about this song is, it was done first by Roth. While I like both singers, I don't think Sammy should be singing Roth era songs, and vice-versa As others have said, you should check out the guitar solo from Eddie to see why we all loved him, and why he is truly one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
Liked better with Roth like Sammy better as solo artist better

Yet Eddie was the Talent with is off the chain Guitar 🎸skiĺls. Still most don't know Eddie helped Michael Jackson song Beat it for the Guitar solo , however eddie only wanted a case of beer & some dance lessons from Michael with No credit on the album !!!

Have to give the vocals to Dave on this one. Sammy doesn't let you down, but this is Dave's style.
Saw the live performance in Dallas in 1984 with David Lee Roth on vocal. I like Sammy Hagar but when I hear this song I remember Diamond Dave swinging across the stage on a harness anchored from the ceiling. He was drinking from a a bottle of Jack Daniels while he sang this song.
I am not a huge fan of the group but back in the day it got a lot of play time.
This might sound funny I remember it's a good work song catchy as u sed.

You've done three Dave songs .. this one as recorded by Sammy live. If you want blown away with Sammy on song and performance - the song 5150 off this same concert (Live Without a Net) ... BTW, I have huge respect for everything Dave and Sammy .. but you'll understand after this performance.

I also forgot to mention 84 philly Heaven and hell was the best you could hear way better then the one from 2005

Hey Girl im an 80's kid i went massive numbers of concerts i personally like David lee roth Van Halen better, but i want to let you know im the biggest Ronnie james Dio fan ever ive met him a number of times before he passed but theres 2 songs i want tou to listen and react to Dont talk to strangers 1984 Philadelphia.and also when he played in Rainbow its called stargazer.youll love them the 84 philly show the whole show was Dios best ever show....

This is one of my favourite Van Halen tracks, but unfortunately, I much prefer the original performance with David Lee Roth rather than Sammy, David is more the showman and energy.
It's far better with DLR imo.
The song is about both. And yes, you're right about Panama not being one of their best songs. I got lucky enough to see them play with both Roth and Hagar. Awesome shows!
I know that you prefer live performances over studio versions. Here's a link to a song that Sammy made famous during his solo career and VH played it live back in '89:

And believe it or not, Sammy is teaming up with Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Jason Bonham to do a 40 show US tour during the summer of '24. They'll be doing mostly Van Halen songs.
I don't mean to chew your ear off, but Van Halen has a huge catalogue of songs to choose from, yet I do recommend these two songs in particular.

This song was much better with David lee Roth but his arrogance is why Van Halen fell out of favor for me.
Sammy sounded out of breath and struggling to sing it. Sammy was better when he was with Montrose & Gamma
This was a dave song.. and the studio cut is much better.. sammy is a better singer over all and especially now (dave has been a trainwreck for decades now).. but dave was the front man of all front men.. Panama is a great track.. but you have to get away from the van halen live performances as 1st impressions.. once you know the tracks.. you can appreciate the live shows.. but to take each night's interpretations of the songs and base your opinion of a track on it might be selling the song short.. especially when you are on a van hagar show reviewing a dave era van halen song.. sammy hated performing dave's songs.. but the difference in the band from dave to sammy as a whole was night and day.. the 1st 6 albums had what van halen fans wanted.. the van hagar era had what music execs, movie directors, sammy, and the younger crowds that didn't grow up on ealy van halen wanted.. but that's because they didn't know what they were missing or succumbed to not having the early dave era magic.. take away the 1st 6 albums.. the van hagar hits never get the recognition.. never get the play.. but, it all has it's place in history.. i love sammy but dave had VH's look and feel on lock.. and van halen, as a band, without michael anthony's BG vocals.. might never had happened.. he carried dave.. and sammy.. alex is no sluch of a drummer either.. please go back and listen to the 1st six albums studio tracks..
