It's important to note that bacteria and fungus can build up in the reservoir portion of self-watering pots because water sits in them for extended periods, often with fertilizer. Bacteria loves your orchid fertilizer even more than your orchids do. The reservoir needs to be cleaned periodically to reduce the bacteria and fungus growth. Every 4-6 weeks is usually adequate (more often is even better), you should wash them. It also helps remove fertilizer buildup. Don't wash them with harsh or fragrant soaps that leave residual chemicals behind. Peroxide and water is a great choice for this. Be sure to wipe or scrub to remove the biofilm that grows below the water line and the fungus that can grow above that line. I'm not saying self-watering pots aren't great but you do have to do a little maintenance once in a while to make sure your orchids remain healthy in the long term.
I was never someone who cared about or was good with plants but my son got me a Phalaenopsis orchid for Mother's Day and I really wanted to try and keep it alive. I started looking up care instructions and tips on UA-cam and it brought to several of your videos. I have fallen in love with your channel. Watching your videos has made me even more excited to keep my orchid going and hopefully get it to bloom!
My experience is very similar. My mom bought me a house warming Phal. I had always heard orchids are difficult but this channel taught me that wasn't true. My orchid is happy happy happy. THANK YOU DANNY!
Hi Dani, I’ve been growing about 25 of my orchids (phals, Oncidiums & dendrobiums) indoors in S/W pots with wicks (microfibre cloth strips) which I made myself. I’m growing in leca for the indoor plants and still have some outdoors in bark. The indoor setup is working very well for me and as my pots are DIY it was very inexpensive to setup. Thanks for sharing this video, it has given me confidence in what I am doing and I’m sure other growers will also benefit.
My paphiopedilum absolutely thrived in a self watering pot. I had some issue and repotted it in a regular pot, and everytime I check shes doing ok but its dry. Gonna put her back in that, great reminder!
Hi Danny, those pots are so cute!! I am currently growing about 6 of my smaller phals and 1 dendrobium keiki in self-watering pots with wicks. They are in inorganic mixtures of LECA, PON and Pumice. It was a bit of touch and go for a while, but they have finally acclimated to their new environment!!
I’m a new orchid owner and I rescued it tbh. So many rotted roots. I trimmed her. Repotted into a self watering grey singular pot. Just cuz that’s what I had. Very chunky mix. Hope she survives lol Im in a cold climate. I have a Phalaenopsis.
hi Danny @missorchidgirl, i have several phals in self watering pots and am still trying to figure out their watering schedules. when watering, how much water do you leave in the reservoir ? do you wait until the reservoir dries and/or the wicks dry up between watering? thanks!
Hi i am learning.so much about these vandas i had 3 of them but it died so watching your video i has ideas now on taking care of the vandas thank u so much.❤
Hi Danny! Thanks for another great video! My Masdevalias and some other terrestrials LOVE being in self watering pots and I lost a maxi to dryness so im going to get another one and try it in self watering.
Dear Miss Orchid Girl, I have watched a few of your videos before, my bf gave me a beautiful blue pink phalaenopsis orchid, and since June due to the heat wave in London the orchid has been more dehydrated (limping droopy leaves, and the roots seem less full looking than when i just got them (new). I have used your methods for rehydrating it (watering it with a soak in 10-15 minutes) then drain it, and re-water when the roots are dried (its almost 1-2 days) The leaves are much better than 2 weeks ago but its still a bit droopy, and the roots haven't look as full as before either , I love this orchid as it was a romantic gift and would love to know more how to further care for it. Thank you ~~
In my experience, Repotme is the gold standard in orchid care products and they give good advice. Their medium & pots are excellent. I've tried other company's pots and have found while their products are good, Repotme is better. I won't risk trying another company's medium. However, Repotme could be a little more personable in their responses. Their responses are all business, not very friendly, and sometimes bordering on rude. But I will pick them anyway, every time.
Hi, I think they’re great :) I have a review on them since before my rePotme era, don’t mind the cringe it’s an almost decade old video 🤭 enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/gBTo60wyLN4/v-deo.htmlsi=BPHTil54TDaT6epY
Hey, danny my phalaenopsis orchid leaves are getting narrow and aren't as wide as they were. Can you tell me the possibilities on why this is happening
Hey! I just had a video request: i recently got myself an ascocentrum miniata, and i was trying to look up some care tips for it and just the different varieties in general of vanacious orchids! Do they require the same care as a big vanda? I also have rhymcostylis and i seem to not know wether im supposed to treat all of them equally or not
I’ve been thinking about this recently as I have some orchids that need watering every 4-6 days. I think that paphs would do well in these. What do you think about Miltoniopsis?
My comment doesn't have to do with self watering pots but rather something that occurred to me while watching your video 😅 hope thats okay. Do you happen to have a video on how you clean/maintain your orchids leaves?? Mine were a little dirty so I just got a small rag and some water but although I was very gentle, I still managed to split a leaf 😢 do you have any special tools you use to help?
The ceramic version of these are so, so beautiful, but way too expensive and tend to arrive broken or cracked. At least RePotme is really good at handling returns/making right damaged items.

Oh Missorchidgirl that Little Zorro Phalaenopsis orchid is gorgeous!! Where can I get one? I live in NJ
Great video. Thank you . 😊 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Do you prefer these pots or the 3D printed pots by 3D pins?
What do you think of RePot Me carousel pots for phals?

How do you feel about humidity trays for orchids?
Do you use any wicking things in addition? Like material that goes down into the water from inside the bottom of the pot?
Hi, nope not with these pots, the cones do a great job 😊
Do you have an update on your automatically self-watering pots?
Hey, danny my phalaenopsis orchid leaves are getting narrow and aren't as wide as they were. Can you tell me the possibilities on why this is happening
Do miltoniopsis do well with this?

Hi, I think both could benefit from it, even the slipper orchids! Maybe mixing the moss with some perlite or spongerock :)
@@MissOrchidGirl how do you keep smaller pots hydrated? Because of their size,- they tend to dry even more quickly.
My comment doesn't have to do with self watering pots but rather something that occurred to me while watching your video 😅 hope thats okay. Sorry if you've already made a video about this. I'll search for it after I'm done with this one. ❤

How about zygos and the coconut orchid, would they do well in a self watering pot?
Hi, yes they could do great! I'll definitely put my Maxies in self watering 😁
It's nice now that you're showing us your face but I miss the close-ups of the orchids when you do tutorials. It's hard to see what you do now 😢
.. but I did give close ups.. 😭
