For all Mac OS big sur users having problems installing ML (f.e. ML Directory Not Found)... format the sd-card with disk-utility using fat or fat32. Big Sur creates directories to ExFAT file systems with an illegal attribute setting (0x38)

Thanks for the Feb. 2021 build and your settings. I received the grip from Poland yesterday. Top people, with excellent communication and order follow-up. It fits the EOS_M like a glove. I haven't put it to any practical use yet as I am still waiting for the batteries to make their way to my mailbox :-) But judging from the build quality alone, I know this is what will be powering my Ms from now on. It beats any other arrangement in terms of compactness and keeping cabling to a minimum. Not to mention the stability and ease it adds to holding the camera to get the best shot possible. I have ordered a couple more and can recommend without reservation.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah it really is great. I mean nothing wrong with carrying a few batteries around, but this provides a good grip whilst getting much more record time than a single battery.

Awesome footage as always Zeek, love the 55-250mm lens and the fantastic 10-18mm lens, they are budget lenses but perform like pro lenses, really like the low light footage you managed to get and your editing is great, very kind of you to share your settings, I am still waiting for my EOS M battery grip from Poland looks like the perfect accessory for this great camera, thanks

I love that you show off Melbourne I miss it there. That 35mm is a beast! Surprisingly the 55-250mm was insane, but would love to see some blown out background! It’s hard unless it was a 105mm with nd filter during the day, I hope my firmware update works with it because my speed booster isn’t really cooperating with the lens, they’re not friends anymore lols 😂

The 35mm is really nice for sure. I used the Metabones here which works fine with them. One of my Viltrox don't, the other Viltrox does lol. 🍿

Hey Zeek. First of all a fantastic video. Especially the opening scene under the bridge I found gigantic. I have another question about the 2.5 K raw mode. Did I understand it correctly that if I choose a mode higher than 1080p, the crop becomes smaller. As great as I actually find more pixels, I wonder with which lens, for example, this mode is useful at all, because then partly, for example, with a 50 mm lens is hardly anything to see or this shot is very dense. Have I understood this correctly? Or have I possibly set something wrong. I last tried to film with a Speedbooster and a Helios 58 mm lens in 2.5 K raw mode and unfortunately there was hardly anything left of the actual image section. Do you have a tip?
With high resolution modes I use wide Stabilized lenses like the 17-55 IS or Canon 15-45/18-55. Works perfect for high crop modes.

I’ve gone from the heavy C100 Mark 2, to the lighter M50 now, but you/ML have made the small EOS-M look very similar to the C100 with that beautiful dynamic range! I’m holding my breath for ML to catch up with an M50 version - good or bad idea to wait? Thanks so much Zeek✌🏻

I believe the EOS R/RP are getting quite a kick with ML Development, I think there is a pause for the M50 ATM though I hope it's just my imagination 😉👉
Nice videos, im amazed about this quality, my m50 has a serious problem with rolling shutter at 4k, does this camera has the same issue at 2.5k? Congrats for such quality work!!!

In 2.5K the Rolling shutter is better than the M50, but It is still noticeable with longer focal lengths. It's been fine for me as I don't pan fast and use wide lenses.

I used that custom Battery grip on the Gimbal it held up quite fine. I've never used it while plugged in to HDMI. I always prefer a light setup for gimbal use though.

Your exposure is always so great! What metering do you use (and how) on these shots with varying light conditions? I assume you ETTR
I use zebras really. Sometimes I let the sky blow out, just to get better skin exposure. Ettr is good for some or most scenes. False colour is the best in my opinion.
Are the zebras and false color from the “field monitor” accurate? I have the feelworld version but haven’t used the exposure tools yet.
@@justinoneil6971 I use them in-camera with magic Lantern. Field Monitors are accurate yes, but I for some reason prefer in camera.
Danne said in a forum thread that 5k anamorphic frtp is the gold standard for the eos m. You seem to prefer 2.5k with the 5x crop, is there a reason for that?
5K FRTP is nice for general video. The Resolution in 2.5/2.8k modes are quite spectacular and is why I like them a lot. They're not 5x crop. They're about ~3x Crop. The Live View on the M is about X5 but not the actual framing or footage captured. I explain in my other videos how I go about these modes.
Hi Zeek, great video, when recording in 24/25/30 FPS with ML does the Canon video menu need to be in sync with the ML options? Is there a rule of thumb? Thanks
ML will or should override the FPS. Have a look at the Liveview to double check in Liveview.
You don't want 30fps otherwise you'll get frame drops.
Thanks Zeek for your advice, i was writting from a phone that was giving me lots of errors while typing...now from the pc... i watched all your videos on setting up the EOS-M but i never saw you talking about the video menu (PAL/NTSC) on the CAnon menu...fo example the raw video ignores the picture profile setup in the canon menu...does the same happen with video fps? Have you experienced loss of quality when recording 25fps when you selected ntsc in canon menu and vice versa? Thanks
No loss in quality when changing fps at all.
ML Live View will always indicate correct FPS.

I already gave one, had for years. I can highly recommend the Kit 15-45mm, probably one of the best lenses I've ever used ironically.

I personally prefer to uninstall, but you can paste over and update the firmware.
Hi Zeek, I've enjoyed your vids and advice for a while now(although sorry I only just subbed now) and recently I've been lucky enough to be given an original 7d by my dad.
So far I love the images it records, but I'd like to know how capable it is in comparison to the EOS M. Everything I've seen from the M seems more filmic than from my 7d though that's likely my colour grading, but what are the actual differences between them? As far as I can tell they have a similar sensor so does the M have similar capabilities but just in a smaller package?
I'd love to hear what you think of the 7D, I love it for photo and video so far!

I have owned and used the 7D for Magic Lantern and I can tell you the M for in my opinion is much better. More modes, less aliasing, more adaptability to other lenses and speedboosters etc...

Yes I’ve found there really isn’t much you can do aside from regular video on the 7d, and I’ve always thought the artifacts in general were worse than in yours and others eos m footage.
If I were to get one would it be ok to use a speed booster and my ef-S lenses? Or would you say the 17-55 is a bit hefty for it anyway and I should get maybe some vintage glass?

I'd say the Kit 15-45 is very good, the 7Artisans 25mm or Sigma 16mm F1.4 are also nice. The Canon 17-55 F2.8 is a good lens 👍

Zeek, can You help me please, cause I´m a bit confused. At the moment I´m able to shoot RAW with a Canon T3i (2-3 sec clips) and a 5Dii (longer clips). I ordered a M1 as well, quite cheaply. The look of the RAW files is nice, the colors are great. I prefer the look of the T3i most btw, don´t know why ;-). I´ve installed MLV Player and it´s working so far. Now my problem: The huge advantage of the RAW files, 14 bit, uncompressed, I´m giving away by converting into, whatever, prores 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0, H264, mov, etc., not sure. I mean, in the end, in my NLE I´m ending with an 8 bit result. So, where is the bottleneck now in the workflow? Should I do all the CC in the MLV app, or just convert the files at first and then, as usual, do my cutting and CC inside the NLE? I´m afraid, I´m doing a mistake and giving away the advantage of the 14bit uncompressed footage when it comes to convertion. (The old problem of doing CC with 8bit H264 files and banding etc. as a result). Am I wrong? For my understanding, the only way to take advantage in the RAW stuff is, to do all the CC work BEFORE converting the files and dropping into the regular NLE. Not sure...
Use MLV App, not Player, don't know what that is.
Export as DNG for best exportresults out of MLV App and if you want to edit in a more comfortable editor.
Otherwise grade all clips in MLV App, rather than after export. The Color from even MLV App exported as H.264/265 is going to have great colour. If graded further though, you may expect banding.
I use DNG export for grading in Davinci, but MLV App still does a fantastic job.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thank you for the fast responding. Sorry, my nonsense, MLV app of course ;-) . DNG I only tried one time and the outcome were 25 single pics/sec hahaha. Didn´t know how to handle. My NLE is filmora X. I´ve installed DaVinci Resolve, but still ansolutely noob, need to learn this software. So, I´m not wrong with my idea AT FIRST doing all the CC insinde the MLV app,(even the clips look sooo good already, almost no need to touch ;-) ) and the final editing with the simple NLE. Another question: Does it make any difference, if I´m using all the "old" Canon picture profiles, like Technicolor Cinestyle with minus contrast and sharpness? To my understanding with using RAW, this all is obsolete, isn´t it?
At the moment I´m waiting for my EOS M mark1, (cause the 5Dii is a bit bulky of course for family trips and the T3i only can handle 2-3 sec clips without sound). Regards

Picture profiles will have no effect. I made a basic Davinci tutorial for the Eos m, very simple indeed. It's a great basic workflow. I'm sure CC can input DNG files.

Great experiments and footage with the EOS M RAW...Having spent time with both, which do you prefer the final look of when filming RAW, the EOS M or the 5D?
I love the 5D and plan on making another vid. It just needs a VAF/Filter to block out the Aliasing. It's a great cam, but I still will choose the M.
@@ZeekEOSZ Interesting! Your experimentation has inspired me to pick up an M when summer arrives in the UK and I can get out to use it. I like that it can do that super sat 1980's film stock look, for the price it's literally unbeatable. I had been tempted to get a Sigma FP for RAW but didn't want to have to shell out for L-mount lenses as am too deep into Sony e-mount, but this would be a really interesting super-cheap platform to try out. Subliminally it feels like it does that film-like thing where it manages to capture some of the subsurface reflections from skin, so people don't look like shiny plastic objects. Nice job.
@@loudspider316 So true haha, the quality it can produce is really Super, very film like. I'm in no way tempted to get the Sigma FP even after handling it at the camera store. The M is enough for that 80's Vibe 😎🤘🎥🔥
@@ZeekEOSZ Hehe, interesting that you've had a chance to have a play with the FP but preferred the M :) I do like the RAW footage I've seen out of the FP, it's kinda the full frame version of the old BMPCC...But...Hehe, man, it's literally 10 times the price of this guy :) The EOS M has a different vibe altogether, very groovy, a bit of the old Sony F35 vibe which was a great camera. There's a post-chain I use in AE for lazy emulating anamorphic sometimes, and I was just looking at the gimbal stuff you did in Melbourne City with the 10-18mm lens, might try a quick experiment to see how that looks through it as a pre-purchase test, will ping you if the outcome adds value as a process.

Surprisingly the Canon 15-45 is a really great lens, better than primes I've used in the M with Raw Video. Great detail and colour is top notch, plus IS.

If I try record 2.5k/5k the video icon just turns red and it won't film. Or it becomes so slow it's unusable. How are you getting round this. Also how are you managing to achieve such little noise in low light. Mine gets noisy so easily? :-)
What SD Card are you using? I'm using Sandisk Extreme PRO . Also check you aren't shooting 30FPS. I always check my exposure to ensure I am no underexposing. I expose between 1-0.1 EV.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for the quick response. I also use extreme pro. I use a 128 gb. 1080 works fine but if I choose 2.5k it starts glitching. And will stop recording within less than a second. It also strangely zooms in x5 on this mode and won't zoom back out, actual shot isn't zoomed put the focus check on the monitor is.

Double check you're not shooting 30fps. The card is good enough even for continuous 2.5K @2.35:1 or up to 15 seconds or so 16:9.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thank you, I've downloaded the build from that video onto my card however now even 1080p is sometimes only recording for like 6 seconds. And 2. 5k won't do more that 2 seconds. Do you have the 170mb/s extreme pro or 300mb/s?
