- I give you 5 reasons to buy the Lowrance Hook Reveal and 3 reasons not to buy it. The Hook Reveal is a great beginner unit and if you are just unsure of fish finder technology, this is a great one to start with. If you have already been in the fish finder world before, I would recommend you look at the Lowrance Elite FS or the Lowrance Elite 9 TI2. The Hook Reveal Has many great features that should make you consider buying one. Thank you for watching my 5 Reasons To Buy A Lowrance Hook Reveal And 3 Reasons Not | Unit Below Lowrance Elite FS video! Please SUBSCRIBE if you haven't already.
A little about me:
I am James McBurnett. I live in the great state of Texas. Probably not where you would think, but I am located in the panhandle region. I moved here from Alabama and work as a Chemical Engineer in the area. After being here for a few years, I decided to get back to my roots as a fisherman. It is quite challenging in my area to find a body of water to fish. The closest lake to me is about 40 miles away.
After a couple more years, I realized how much I love fishing and wanted to share it with the world. Clearwater fishing was born. I wanted to teach people all about fishing. This includes rods, reels, fishing line, bait, lures, largemouth bass, crappie, walleye, catfish, bluegill, boats, boat trailers, outboards, and anything else related to fishing.
I also wanted to share my fishing experiences as well. To be entertaining, knowledgeable, comical, and FUN. This channel was created out of the love of the sport of fishing, and I plan to keep making content that represents that. Thank you for watching this video and reading a bit about me. Give me a shout out in the comments below and let me know you read this. Now get out there and go catch you some fish.

Around
Well I bought one three weeks ago it bad we they sent it out had a heck of a time getting them to take it back to fix it had to 28.63 just to send it back still waiting bad costumer service I don't know when I'll get it back was given a lot of run around
@@grr7196 Sorry about your troubles. I hope they get it back to you fast, and it works for you. What exactly was wrong with it?
Glad u did this i go pick up my G3 1710 Friday and it’s got the reveal 5 on the console and I had em put one on front and ended up with the reveal 7 gonna put on the front and ain’t used either one so I’m hopin it works good and plan on watchin more videos on using em...thanks man
@@clearwaterfishing thank you for the video , I'm currently looking for my First electronics for my first boat.
I am stuck between this unit and the Ti2, what's the big difference?
Clearwater, I think this video was really really good. I think your videos are truthful and informative. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Will do!
Never had a fish finder. Figured this would be a good starter and your video definitely validated my purchase. Can't wait for it to get here. Thanks for the great video!
Glad to help!
Finally, someone explains the grey side of the products. Thanks 🙏, you helped me a lot in deciding which Lowrance to buy. I was struggling with the mapping cause I don’t really needed the expensive charts! Thanks again for this video!
That’s great man! Glad I was able to help!
Thanks a ton! I stopped fish due to life getting in the way back in 1987. Heck the hot fishfinder was like the Humminbird ID which marked in red what was supposed to be fish. Now here I am trying to understand the new technology and it is crazy. This video at least gave me something to start working off of. Thanks again.
No problem. I have a bunch of videos on fish finders. Check them out.
I have 2 hook 5' one on console and one on the trolling motor love them it even has a old school flasher feature love them
They are solid little units. They will get the job done.
Hi, great advice at the right time. Just now I am looking for my first fishfinder and the Hook Reveal is my favorite. Just other more knowledgeable guys told me not to buy but Raymarine instead. Thanks to your clear reasoning I learned that I don't need touch screen, networking, or super high res. I hope that there will be plenty of fish anyway. Greetings from freezing cold Germany, Cheers
So glad I could help! You will catch plenty of fish. btw just because they show up on screen don't mean they will bite!
Another fantastic video! Straight to the point!👍👍
Used my hook reveal 7 on my kayak a couple of years. When I sold the kayaks, I replaced the old Lowrance on the front of my boat with it and does what I need. I put a split shot transducer on it and gets the job done. Just mess with the settings and figure out what works best for you. Can’t go wrong !
3 years later, and I’m interested in the Hook Reveal. Especially since they are even cheaper now.
Thanks for the videos. Just what I needed. Got a free boat/ engine rebuild work project. Came with and Eagle Ultra 3 with worn transducer cable so couldn’t even reliably depth find lol. Went with HookReveal5 DeepWater With Nav+ preload
Nice man! How is the rebuild project going?
@@clearwaterfishing As good as One can expect Just got the transom cap gel coated. Soon time to slap the motor back on and sonar when it arrives.
Great info, thanks mate
Any time!
Great video !
Thanks! Glad I could help.
picked up my hook reveal 7 a few hours ago, itll go on my True Kit inflatable for its inaugural trip at the weekend, hopefully we'll get some nice weather as its been cold and wet here in southern Australia.
Should be warming up soon down there. We are headed to fall here. Good luck!
@@clearwaterfishing Tasmania is a lot cooler than the mainland, makes for nice summers though. You want to get as much fishing in while you can:) Cheers and all the best.
Went ahead and subscribed I’m liking this channel and it’s dumbed down for a guy like me to understand...I’m over by Toledo bend lake u ever fish over this way?
I haven’t but I do plan to go to many lakes over the next few years. What’s good fishing in Toledo Bend?
Well white perch is wrapping up right now but the bass fishin is great over here and it’s gettin kicked off good won’t be long they will be on the beds so it’s bout to be real good
My cousin invented the genesis mapping system and lowrance bought it off him. Pretty cool.
I hope your cousin is a very rich person. Seems like a great idea.
@@clearwaterfishing hes doing very well now.
Thank You! I have been looking to buy my 1st fish finder! For several months! I ended up getting a hook 7 reveal tripleleshot New never used! $325!
That is awesome! Hope it works well for ya!
How do you like it?
Purchasing a Hook Reveal 9 to go on my center console SeaArk 2072. I don’t have a need for another unit on my boat nor the pairing or networking features. We do a lot of fishing in the winter time and I just feel like the raised buttons will be easier to manipulate than a touch screen with gloves on. For me the ability to use the 2D sonar and over lay it with the down scan feature is what I need. Hummingbirds have more detail hands down on the side imaging and down imaging but to me they lack a little on the 2D vs the Lowrance. Really all comes down to personal preference and what your needs are. The Helix and the Hook are both 2 very good mid price range units IMO. Great video btw. Tight lines 🤙🏼
I appreciate your comment. Your view point very interesting especially for the winter fishing. I wouldn’t have thought of that. What do you fish for in the winter?
@@clearwaterfishing we live on the Santee lakes here in South Carolina so in the winter time we fish for giant catfish, (blues, & flatheads) and then also big stripers.
@@jonathancoley8112 Big Fish!!!
Good video, I bought one......👍
Good choice!
After watching your review I have one on order
Good deal. What size did you go with?
@@clearwaterfishing I went with the 7
@@dukeitsk9624 Awesome it should do you a great job! tight lines!
Bought it today
Awesome man! What size did you get?
Fourth reason not to , Lowrance does not assist or service their products. I asked for help for something simple and they said throw it away and just buy another. I did I bought Humminbird and appreciate a company that has real customer service.
Man! That is just awful. Sorry about your experience with Lowrance. I do love my Humminbirds though. You like yours?
@@clearwaterfishing I love my old Bird, and again when I sought assistance HB was there! So because of my experience I am awaiting delivery now of my new Solix. This summer we will have two Birds in action in two boats which will be great for our annual father - son tournament.
Chanel top. 👍 . I wanted to buy a new fish finder, to fish in the sea up to 60 meters deep. is the reveal tripleshot hook good for this depth? Best regards from Portugal. António José
I've been using an old humminbird for the last 8 years and looking to upgrade and deciding between the Lowrance Hook Reveal 7 triple shot and the Helix 5 GPS DI. I fish in saltwater (Tampa Bay) 20-50 ft and anchor fish exclusively. Hard to find structure fish mostly the channels. Just trying to mostly locate fish. Which one would you recommend?
This vid helped me decide , I think the hook 7 is just what I need
Do you know how deep they effectively go ?
Thanks !
Depends on which frequency but 2D is good for 200-400 ft
You can get a 12 inch lowrance Hook 2 Triple Shot for $699 and $799 on sale at academy
Now that is a good deal!
Thanks for the great review. Will the HOOK REVEAL 7 inch GPS ONLY with TRIPLESHOT transducer map and allow viewing, either on the unit or on a PC, uncharted areas around the world?
Not sure what you are asking. Could you reword it?
What I mean is if I buy the unit without maps. Will I be able to map and store areas anywhere in the world? The plan is to but the GPS only with a tripleshot transducer.
@@sailbandit1423 Got ya now. Sorry about that. No, you won’t be able to record with the gps only model. You won’t be able to add mapping. You’ll have to get the 4000 lake US map to get that function
There are a couple features that all these new fish finders are missing the first one would be a tone button on the side of the finder that lets you be able to set the tone so you can customize the sound so people with hearing loss can hear it....
Number 2 is why has nobody came up with a voice activated weigh point...so all you need to do is say mark this spot as such and such.....i own a hook 7 love the unit ....but i would replace it in a heartbeat if i could find these 2 features on a new unit......I'm sick and tired of having to clean fish slim off my hook 7 at the end of the day and beginning and the middle of the day......thanks for reading i love your site
Never thought about a tone difference. That actually might be something they can do in an update. You might contact them on that. Sadly I don’t think many of these companies focus on user interface. So I’m not sure the voice activation will be a thing soon.
Compare whith striker 7sv.wich one is better?and why?
Thinking about the 7 inch screen. This will be my first fish finder. Do I go with the Splitshot or the Triple shot? $100 difference isn't a big deal. I have a 15 ft aluminum boat with a steering wheel. I plan to put the fish finder on the steering console with a swivel so I can see when I'm driving and spin it around when I'm at the bow of the boat. The 3 negatives don't apply to me and I liked the 5 positives. So Split shot or Triple shot? Thank you and I did subscribe.
Triple shot. The side scan can help you look for new structures and cover. Mark them and then go over them with the down scan to get a better view.
@clearwaterfishing the value I find with side scan is looking at brushtops from a distance to see if they are holding fish, and how deep they are suspended. I fish a 200 acre lake with lots of flooded timber, much of which is cedar. So finding structure is not an issue but there is so much, they all don't hold fish. With sidescan I can see fish without spooking them from the structure. I can also determine how deep to fish since it changes dailey.
Sir could I put this in my sail yacht and calibrate the depth from keel instead of hull? Or is thus a very bad idea. What is your opinion? Loved your video. I have not purchased yet. ❤
Most depth finders have the ability to offset the depth. You should be able to make your keel 0ft or just recognize it is "3 ft" lower than the transducer.
Im looking to get a 5 inch unit for my J12 and I am looking on amazon where it shows the hook reveal 5 triple shot with the side imaging, I understand you said they don't have the triple shot in the 5 inch screen so I'm wondering if the information on amazon is false or if they have released the tripleshot 5 inch display since this video? thanks and great video!
Man, idk. You go to lowrance’s website and you can’t select a 5” with the triple shot.
@@clearwaterfishing oh man haha im going to stay away from it just in case haha. I appreciate the help!
Hi how does this compare to garmin 7sv, especially side scan? I believe the transducer is longer than the 7sv as well? Thanks!
I have had better luck with Lowrance in general over Garmin.
I'm debating between the hook reveal 7 about vs the garmin striker plus 7. Which you think is better?
Hook reveal 7.
I've not heard good things about the hook 2 units idk bout the reveal units but was looking into getting a hook 2 for the front of my boat but idk after reading the reveiws any opinion on them ?
I don't thing the reveal is a bad unit. I am not so sure about the Hook 2. The Hook 2 is a discontinued product. I would step up to the Hook Reveal.
How big of an area does the Split shot and the triple shot show below the boat? They used to tell you that the transducer was a 20 or 60 degree cone angle and the instructions told you the bottom area covered. I can find nothing on the Hook series and the help lines are worthless. I would like to know bottom coverage in 15'- 30'. Old 20 degree units you saw about a third of the depth. 15' of water showed 5' of bottom. Thanks
It depends on the frequency and what mode you have it in. With a triple shot you get side scan (which can go about 100' to each side), down scan covers a thin slice of somewhere between 45-75degrees, 83khz 60degrees round cone, and 200khz 20degrees round cone. Check out this post... www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=705551
In comparison to a Garmin Striker 7SV, which one gives better image? Just talking about image quality, not actually the tech specs
Can I network the triple shot placed at my trolling motor with my elite TI9 that’s on my center console
No, the Hook reveal has no networking capabilities. It is a stand alone unit.
Can you add waypoints or POI's from Side View mode?
Yes, just use your keypad to go over to your POI and make a waypoint.
Can you use Navionics mapping cards in the hook units?
Yes you can!
Can it read deep water. I use it in the ocean and it stopped reading at about 115 feet of water?
I believe the 2d sonar goes to 300ft.
Hey, I ordered hook reveal 9 with tripleshot transducer, but I mostly bottom fishing in Baltic sea. Depth from 20 to 150m. Is this combo good for me, or I made mistake?
Thank you
No, I think you will get the most use out of the 2D and the down scan. When you move shallow you can use the side scan.
I'm looking for a low-rence model that has low-cost GPS and Side Scan, which models do you recommend... I'm from Brazil...
I would recommend the Hook Reveal. Either the 9” or 12” model.
I’m looking a 9” or 12” fish finder doesn’t need mapping but like to have 2d, down image and side image with best view. Which one be best, brand doesn’t matter!
Humminbird has the best side and down imaging in my opinion. I would get a 10" Helix.
Which helix 10 be best?
@@danielharder9085 If you want side imaging you need the Mega SI+. That gives you side imaging, down imaging, 2d sonar, and mapping. Either g3n or g4n.
@@danielharder9085 did you end up getting a bird?
There is one youtube showes very bad reliablity lowance has and so many comments same issue. That really makes me think twice
Every company is going to have some products that don't work as well. You have to weigh out the type of failures, how many you see like that, and how many does the company sell. Sometimes there is just a bad component that comes through.
Hook reveal 5 or helix 5? Both down image
Can a Hook 7 or 9 be opened up and wire in a monitor for a bigger screen ?
I am sure but you would have to know what you are doing.
Quik question I want a reveal and I was wondering, do all the reveal units come with genesis pre-installed?
I don't think it comes with it. I think it is something you sign up for and they let you download maps people have made from the cloud and you can contribute as well. You can find more information here: www.genesismaps.com/
@@clearwaterfishing what, in your opinion, would be better for a kayak, a hook2 reveal 5 or a garmin striker pro 5
I’ve never owned a striker. But I think lowrance DI and and si are better than Garmin. I would go with the lowrance.
@@clearwaterfishing cool, Thanks man
Are they good to install on aluminum bass boat to catfish in dirty water?
I would definitely say YES!
Good video. I watched after buying the Reveal 7xSS. I am trying to get maps to work. I ordered CMap Reveal from my dealer. Couldn't get it to work and called Lowrance Tech Support. They said CMaps not Supported on 7xSS. I looked on CMap website and they say Discover Maps are supported. When I pull up my GPS screen, there is no image at all, whether I zoom in or out. Tech Support said to put blank SD card in the unit. I did that, so I guess it will plot it's own maps. I really want already created maps. Any ideas?
Sounds like your dealer sold you the wrong map. CMap reveal doesn't work with Hook Reveal. CMap Discover does. Check out the compatibility here: www.c-map.com/device-search/
@@clearwaterfishing I saw that too. On the Lowrance website, it clearly states any X model does nor support add on maps. Not sure which one to believe.
do the hook reveal 7x units support navionics?
It does!
Looking to put on my new Hobie lynx. Yes no ?
Yeah. I think so. I would personally go for the Humminbird Helix.
Which cartography you think is best? Cmaps or navionics?
That is a difficult one to answer straight. They are both pretty equivalent as far as contours go and having 1’ marks. They do have other features that may meet your needs better. You probably want to make sure which one covers more lakes you fish. That is probably most important. If you are looking for someone to tell you which one to try, I have navionics and I like it. Hopefully this helps.
@@clearwaterfishing well i mainly fish saltwater. yeah i was kinda aiming towards navionics. Been very hesitant but i will go with navionics
Will the hook on the back of my boat interfere with the one on the front ?
Short answer is most likely, unless you run them at different frequencies or pause the sonar pinging on one. Typically the interference isn't that bad.
I got the Hook 7 triple shot and I bought the Navionics maps card but don’t or can’t get it on the screen don’t know how to input it did I waste my money or is it just me
Might need to make sure the one you bought is compatible. They make a few different versions I believe.
I live in on canada what fish finder should I get f the best maps and sonar for my first sonar on a budget
My opinion is Humminbird Helix and buy the Humminbird Lake Master map for your area.
Thanks for your info tight lines... 😁
@@markcomisky7106 No problem buddy!
i bought the 9 hook reveal and the gps works fine but the sonar is always stopped, ive tried all the transducer settings and still no good. so as for plug and play its a no go. transducer is in the right position as ive checked with an installation video, about to smash it!
Dude, that stinks! I wish I knew how to help. Do you think you got a bad transducer? or maybe a bad head unit?

@@scottschatschneider8100 Thank you so much. It means a lot to have awesome subscribers like you. Let me know if you ever have any questions.
Is this unit worth buying? Has anyone had any issues with the triple shot transducer or unit itself? I’m only asking because this unit is my first choice however I have seen some bad reviews.
I would personally go for a Helix. They have more features, better image quality, and more control.
Can i connect my motorguide xi5?
Afraid not. This is a stand alone unit.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Will it work in saltwater are there maps
Yes it should and if you buy a coastal map.
Will it be compatible with trolling motors for spotlock
No. The Hook Reveal doesn't have any networking capability.
@@clearwaterfishing thanks. Can you suggest a good one relatively cheap that is please sir?
@@avines7566 If you are looking for trolling motor compatible fish finders, I need to know which trolling motor you have? Lowrance Ghost I recommend the Elite FS. For minn kota ultrex a helix with network capabilities.
@@clearwaterfishing none yet. Im looking at my options but i desperately want spot lock on my boat.
Can some one tell me plizz is a lowrence hook reveal 9 good for squids
Maybe not the down imaging. The high frequencies only work on a fish's air bladder. The 2d sonar should work for you.
@@clearwaterfishing mby garmin vivid 9sv is better for squids what you think?
I am 100% against forward facing sonar. Not because of the price as much as we are trending towards a really boring sport. Why not stay home and watch tv? Especially if everyone has it and the fish are off shore, well tough shit! I absolutely believe that there are 2 reasons KVD is no longer the dominant force in bass tournament fishing, whether it’s best 5 bass and take em to the scales or if it’s MLF format. Number one is high school and College fishing.KVD went 2/3rds of his career being so good that he was head and shoulders over EVERY ONE.
Enter new sonar. SS, DS and now forward fishing sonar. Where is the sport in sport fishing? If you know a bass’s seasonal tendencies, you are a decent fisherman and you read sonar like you were a whale 🐋, You would be fine.
I believe technology has passed a lot of the 45 year olds and up bye. These young lions 🦁 don’t know what a flasher or a paper graph is. They grew up on tech. Good or bad it’s true! I suffer from getting what I want from $3000 worth of electronics and I’m 50.
I think they should be able to use everything during practice but come game day u have 2d and GPS only!
A lot of people will say I can’t afford one. Well I have $3500 to buy a pair of shallow water anchors.
If you pull out from a boat dock that’s about 5 feet deep, can live image see under docks? Or is it inhibited by depth like all sonars?
You have a great concept. I agree there is not enough appreciation for how things were done in the past. I have only used a flasher a couple of times, and I am sure there are fishermen that have never even heard of a flasher. I am going to be honest with you. I have a live sonar and still have gotten skunked. Found fish but couldn't make them bite. Also your idea of limiting tech on game day is pretty cool. I think it would be a real challenge on the pros. Your question on the boat dock and forward facing sonar, you can see under boat docks that are 5 ft. I have used it in 3ft of water and caught fish. I look forward to awesome comments like yours. Keep them coming!
Seems almost like you have to be up with the times to be a competitive fisherman nowadays. If you can't figure out your electronics, you're not putting in the time to be a competitive tournament angler. Limiting the tech is a hilarious concept. Your flasher and paper graph were looked at the same way by the previous generation of anglers. Should we just all go back to tying some string on a branch and making our own lures, because a 90 year old says "back in my day....". Progress happens, to be a pro, you have to be able to take advantage of everything at your disposal, and still come out on top. You have to go out amongst a group of people running the best electronics, and still catch bigger fish. If you think reading sonar can make you beat KVD, your dreaming. If you've spent 3k on electronics and can't figure them out, you need to put some time in. If tech has passed you by, that is your own issue for not keeping up. There are 50 year old programmers, code writers, graphic artists, ect. Every sport advances, part of being the best is keeping up. If you can't, then you are no longer the best, and should maybe retire. All this coming from myself, who cannot afford the best electronics, and who has beaten people with a wayyy better setup then I have. In fact, I have out-fished people who have more money into electronics than I have into my kayak, graph, rods, and tackle. Doesn't matter if you can see them, if you cannot catch them.
@@killaz669 I think the only reason to limit electronics if it is hurting the population of fish. But at that point you should be limiting everyone not just the tournaments. Electronics makes going to a new lake and having success more likely. I can go to my home lake and not even have electronics on my boat and still have a good day because I have the experience on that lake.
Watch at 2x speed and thank me later.
Its a nice beginner unit, go spend 3500 and save yourself the downfalls if you are serious about fishing❤😂
