- Wassup guys! Many of you asked me to continue the Twelve-step Suite and here I am with the next chapter :)
Here's This Dying Soul from Dream Theater's Train of Thought album. The heaviest one from DT's history which combines prog and metal at a level never seen and heard before.
Funny to think now that I listened to this album many many times back in 2003/2004 and it was the best method to charge myself before many exams during my university days ahah!
Train of Thought was permanent in my car and the 40km route from my place to the university was crazy, with me playing along to it on the steering wheel (hey, I was driving safely, don't get me wrong ^_^) super happy and excited, trying not to get nervous for the exams.
At the end, I got my bachelor and this album played a very important role in the making ahah!
As I said, this is part of DT's Twelve-step Suite (a set of 5 songs which deal with MP's past experience of alcoholism) and the song features steps four and five (“Reflections of Reality (Revisited)” and “Release”).
It was challenging to play everything with the usual energy because I recorded this on last week and it was (and still is) suuuper hot outside and inside the studio here. But I survived and here's the final result, finally!
For this video I inaugurate my new Tama Silverstar Mirage acrylic set, I'm sure I'll have lots of fun with it :)
For the config, this time I didn't setup everything exactly as Mike Portnoy did while recording ToT in 2002 but it is very close to it. Unlike what MP did next, he recorded this song with the RIGHT side of his Siamese Monster kit only. Later, during the ToT tour he realized that it was better using the LEFT side of the kit because of the double bass parts and because it worked better when connecting this to songs like The Glass Prison...end of my NERD story part :) :) :)
Alright, that's all folks...enjoy, let me know what you guys think and, as always, thanks for the support!

Josh Steffen Nice to see you here too! Great fan of both.
Josh Steffen thanks man! You too 😎🤘🏻
You two are masters
Agreed Uilian. Awesome players 🙏
You should cover the 12 steps man!
Just as breathtaking as hearing Mike performing it! Maybe even more as the drums are soooo nicely laid in front of us! Thank you Andrea!!!
I would never even guess this isn't Mike Portnoy himself playing if I wouldn't see the video with my own eyes... amazing cover
Which mike?
THE MOST ACCURATE DRUM COVER I HAVE EVER SEEN. THE FEEL IS THERE LIKE.... YOU CAN REALLY BECOME MIKE PORTNOY.... I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A PORTOY-ISH FEEL. YOU ARE THE ONE, ANREA.
I feel like the arrangement of the kit is being underappreciated here too.... set up is spot on!
no bro it's exactly like the studio setup of Portnoy while portnoy played the song , see the isolated drums video this dying soul, it is the exact setup just like a clone drum set up
Possibly the best cover for this song, you're a badass!!!
Wow, that was absolutely amazing! there a scene in game of thrones where a guy cutts of a horse's head with a single slice of his sword, this performance was on that same level of badass.
The Mountain was Indeed a dying soul since the beginning of the series.
Been following you since I saw your William Tell video. Love seeing how much fun you have and the showmanship, points, stick twirls, little laughs. Always killing it. Whatever you do, don't stop.
the last two video are my favorite! So satisfying to hear your drums behind progressive music!
Mike Portnoy should be proud!!! A perfect cover!
Amazing as always ! You are the man on the DT drum covers!👍👍
I remember this is one of the first song from Dream Theater that i heard when i was about 12, good times... Great video as usual, keep up the good work !

Was just listening to this earlier. I love when the guitar gets into the main riff. So so so nice.
Seeing it being performed in front of my eyes makes me appreciate the song even more. Great playing! Thanks

Hey! Very good job! This is a song that I like sooo much and you have the right vibe and groove for it. On the other hand really your setup, it seems to the right part of the Siamese monster of Portnoy. Saludos!
That ride cymbal claims to be played with the left hand....and the HHat too.
Geez...that was good AF. Suscribed :)
Just the best!
Bravissimo Andrea.
Io credo che una buona Cover debba contenere tutti i dettagli necessari per essere chiamata una Cover, e questo è un puro esempio. Complimenti, great job. :)
Grandissimo! Complimentoni :)
1:10 always love this part,
youre great!
I love the return of the Vadrum Cam!
Mike shoud be proud of it...you both shoud be in the doble kit for an amazing performance!
There was a few seconds where the video started playing before I clicked like. I don't know why those seconds existed. You're amazing as always man!

This is a fusion of two of my biggest drum influences. My god, Andrea! I always suspected that you liked MP due to your style. Been watching you since the Mario-days. ;) This was great! Can´t wait to watch the rest of the "Suite" Will do ASAP: :D
This is amazing! Best band around
You are badass Andrea!!!
This sond is very hard
Monstro!!!🇧🇷
wow fantastic kit you have there. Dream theater for the win man
Details so spot on! Even the weird ride hit at 6:37 :p
Perfect cover.
That halftime breakdown in the middle of the song is filthy
JUST.... WOW!
Perfect! just Perfect 11/10
Dude this cover is perfect. I can tell u studied the isolated drums video because of stuff like the bell at 4:20 that isn't really audible in the mix. Amazing attention to detail. Also love how you hit cymbals in the same location as portnoy did
Perfect!!!!
Genius !!!
Amazing performance!
Holy shit. You're a goddamn beast, Andrea. Keep em coming. DT
te quedó brutal! Buenísima! Saludos desde Venezuela!
Yes Andrea, great playing man !! Even the gallery playing is great .. I miss Mike a lot in DT now days, even Mike Mangini is maybe a better drummer, but the "flair" of Mike P 's sound was magic, I say as a bass player ;-)
Next time Tesseract ?
Love your DT covers!! Need more! But from the albums with Portnoy please :)
Nice track dude, getting Mushroomhead vibes from some of the clean vocals in the middle of the song
Damn, this is some tight playing
Never knew that MP used the right side of the double set to record this song, that's so cool!
The best drumer ever
This is the best motherfucking cover of this song ever. Period.
genio total!!!
Man, who are the 17 guys that dislike this? Great job! One more subscriber!
Yes!!!11! 10 to go!
FUCK! Brilliant. I felt every hit and it was clean and absolutely perfect! Amazing playing.
I like how you included the random little ride hit where Portnoy went for but missed a crash cymbal :)
bravíssimo! cheers from Brazil.
Amazing performance. Excellent
