Great talk Michael! You really hit the jackpot with that revelation that Paulita was in Pete's bedroom prior to the Kid's killing. Regarding the Kid's romantic pursuits, have you ever heard of the story that that he was involved with a woman in Las Vegas? Not sure where I read about it but perhaps it was in Utley's book on the Kid. The story goes that the Kid was visiting a married woman in Las Vegas who seemed to love to "entertain" the outlaws. She was going thru a divorce at the time and that is how the story came to light during court testimony. Apparently, when the husband found out about her extra curricular activities, he petitioned the court to take the children away from her. The Kid was named as one of her "customers". Court records do exist and hopefully, some researcher like yourself could still dig up some details about this. I am hoping to purchase your books soon. I really appreciate you quest for digging deeply into the what I like to call the "minutiae of history" Best Regards.

I do remember that....if memory serves the guy's name might have been Webb? I'd have to look it up and yes, it's in Utley's book. I think Billy probably could find a girl to put up with just about anywhere in the territory. With no Facebook or Instagram, it wasn't like the other girls were going to find out anyway. Just imagine Billy's Facebook page though? :-)

Mr Giudicissi: thank you so much for doing this research. Re: your question “Will any new bombshell discoveries happen in this story?” I think it’s possible. I’m 60 and my great-grandparents were the next generation under Billy’s, (born circa 1890). It’s still entirely possible somebody could find a family Bible or some previously unknown hand-written letters, etc. among a grandparent or great-grandparent’s belongings. People tend to forget having such things, especially if dementia is a factor, in latter years. Example: in the house my family lived in, in the 1970’s, we found a letter that had been sent to a previous owner, telling them about Lincoln’s assassination. Heads-up: the SMITHSONIAN likes to keep things secret, for some reason, and they end up with MANY such artifacts but they never revise the historical record. There is a power at work that likes to conceal whatever can be concealed. There just is. Also, if you proved Billy didn’t die in 1881, the museum and gravesite at Ft Sumner immediately get discredited. You won’t find many people there who want to make that happen. I’ve been there several times and the guy who does the tour at the museum is adamant that Garret’s story is the real deal. Good luck sir, you’re doing a fine job!

I had the old 19th Century McCarty family Bible in my hand. It went to someone other than me and has been lost. It was full of names and important dates of old West McCarty's. I was told by my father and grandfather that Billy was a member of our McCarty family. My great great grandfather Elijah McCarty told my dad, H.E. McCarty that he had a brother who died in Andersonville prison. He did, and his name was John McCarty of the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. I have seen John McCarty's grave in that huge cemetery at Andersonville. It holds 13,000 grave stones, most with the name of the deceased. That cemetery was Sara Barton's first project. She insured that the dead were named and are therefore a part of the history of the Civil War. John McCarty was, I think, the father of the Kid. Bible lost so can't prove it.

As the story goes Paulita also had a bedroom in the house that Billy was killed in. She was awakened by the ruckus outside her room and ran, along with Deluvina into her brother's bedroom. Someone lit a candle and they saw the Kid's body sprawled out on the floor. Deluvinia pounded Garrett on his chest shouting that he had "Killed my boy". She called him a "piss pot". Paulita was in there too. A crowd gathered and Poe and Garrett feared for their lives. Maybe Kip McKinny too. The Kid's body was carried to a carpenter's shop and laid out on a table, where the women prepared it for burial which took place the following day. Some men dug the grave the following morning. An inquest was held and the government men were exonerated of murder. Women sat candles around Billy's body and prayed over him until he was taken to the cemetery. For many years Billy's grave was marked with a plain wooden cross. Deluvinia put flowers on it for decades. The grave was probably not where we see it today, but it is close by. I met a fellow 35 years ago who said he knew one of the fellows who buried the Kid. He told me that he knew the location of the actual grave. Sadly this gent passed in the early 90s. He had been a cop around there after WWII. His name was Nick Jackson.

Something drew The Kid to Ft Sumner that night. He had to know he was taking a chance that Garret would be waiting there. Likewise, Garret knew The Kid, for sure, would be coming to Ft Sumner. They both knew something that history has lost or covered-up. Paulita may have had reason, for her children’s sake, to take the secret to the grave with her.

I don't think Billy thought or knew that Garrett and his small posse was at Fort Sumner. He had been hiding out on the prairie camping with cowboys. He always feel relatively safe while in Fort Sumner. Most of its citizens where Hispanic, fans of the Kid. So Billy showed up, sometime after dark and tied up his horse. He walked to the kitchen where he me Deluvinia who was a servant. He said he was hungry. She told him where was a beef hanging on the porch. She handed him a knife, telling him to cut himself a steak and she'd cook it up for him. He dropped his pistol belt and kicked off his boots and in his stocking feet jogged over to the porch. He noticed the men sitting on the porch, probably smoking. Billy walked right by them and they kinda said, "Hi". Pete Maxwell's bedroom was right there. He ducked inside, to ask Maxwell who those guys outside were. He didn't notice Garrett at first, who was sitting at the head of Pete's bed asking the sleeping man if he knew the whereabouts of the Kid. Billy probably didn't notice Garrett who was only a few feet away. Pete said to Garrett something like, "That's him!". Garrett said he recognized the kid's voice when he was asking him who those guys outside were. The sheriff pulled his Colt and shot the kid center mass. He fell flat on his face and died. Then all hell broke loose!

It doesn't seem so curious to me. It seems like something you would talk about after such a traumatic event. it would seem weird to me to not talk about it. What the hell was he doing here, Pete? I would ask that. Paulita said, in Nobles notes, she was standing next to Pete's chair. Not his bed. She never said his bedroom. They could have been in any room of the house. And she said Garrett asked WHY the kid was in town, not IF he was in town. This is the give away that it was asked after he killed him.
I also don't find it strange she was in the house after. It's where she lives.

When dealing with Paulita's comment in 1925/1926 one must remember that she is a mature adult, looking back at her youth. So when she states things like, "I was not in love with him" she may be telling the truth... from the perspective of a grown woman looking back at a young girl's feelings. The statement that neither had thoughts of marriage also does not mean much, as Billy was playing the field so he definitely didn't and so she was accepting of that. Her statement that basically she would go to the ends of the earth for Billy does say it all however. And stating that she was not Billy's sweetheart is probably 100% true considering he probably was playing the field. No girl was his "sweetheart". Billy was the sweatheart of several women, (probably), but not vice versa.

@@arailway8809 Brushy Bill was a liar, but so was pat garret who lied to preserve the reputation of Paulita Maxwel who was anybody's dog that would hunt with her, the truth is Billy was shot in the back during an intimate moment with her that left her with an abdominal scar, and later a daughter called Gringa Retardo, in English this means white with developmental disabilities, who would later commit suicide, After Billy was killed a blood stained mattress was burned the morning after in the yard. John Poe was sent to purchase a new one that morning, and Pauline was not at Billys wake or burial because she was bandaged and bleeding. The story that was told later was all a version to erase the fact that Garett back shot Billy during coitus and kept the Maxwells from enduring the shame of their girl being the ranch bicycle, these are documented historical facts. That Mattress purchase the morning after is all anyone needs to think about, that and that no one gets shot at close range and hangs on to a pistol in one hand and a knife in the other, or that shooting someone standing causes the bullet to travel from the lower back up to the heart, that happens when someone is prone shot in the back and busy. Adella was Billy’s daughter, After William Bonney’s death in 1881, Paulita Maxwell married José Felix Jaramillo on January 14, 1883. They had three children, but he was abusive, and she eventually left the marriage. Jose often punched her bullet scarred belly and is believed to have forced himself on Adella who killed herself at the age of 16. “There was no use chasing him in that country with the start he had,” Garrett later said. “I waited until I thought he would reach his sweethearts at the Maxwell ranch house, and-I got him. Paulita said,” They asked my brother Pete why the Kid was in Fort Sumner, he shook his head and said he did not know., but he merely wanted to save Garrett the embarrassment. He knew., and I knew. I was standing beside his chair at the time and would have answered the question if Pete, with a look, had not warned me to keep my mouth shut." Also, fun fact about Garret's story is the floor plan of the old US Army officers' quarters that was then after the Maxwell house, shows no exterior door to Pete’s room. To this day no one has ever been able to explain the military officer's mattress purchase in the expense report submitted by John W Poe Ask yourself if you believe a shot from a .44 at close range in the back would mean you could hang on to a pistol and a knife and the bullet path would go from the lower back and then shoot up towards the heart. How does someone enter a room where no door exist? Why spend the night barricaded in a room in fear, unless you have done something cowardly and wrong wounding a pregnant girl in process. Did you know that Poe ended up being Sheriff the following year and that Garrett named his son after Poe?

The 1926 interview was an opportunity for Paulita to counter accusations made by Siringo in print some years before that left no doubt who he was referring to without actually naming her....
Telisfor was originally her brother-in-law who died young but not as young as he could have --- thanks to BTK...
Like any good bartender on the make -- Pat Garrett convinced John Chisum that he was the man to rid the Pecos of BTK --
as Paulita said: his only qualification was familiarity
with the Kid and having been an unsuccessful buffalo hunter....

Sure...he could have...except Garrett talks about how he and his men barricaded themselves in the room with the dead man, afraid of being attacked by his friends. I wonder if Pete would allow his sister to have a conversation in the very room where the Sheriff was expecting to be ambushed in?

      @saudade369 2 роки тому

@@MankindMediaLLC perhaps it was in the immediate aftermath when they would have come to the sounds of gunfire a d Garret would start with his questions of them as to why the kid was there ? Just a possibility. We infer much but from the basic text there is nothing to suggest it was before or after the shooting.
It's also perhaps more likely. As questioning them before the shooting would raise the awareness of him and his men being there. Any officer at a crime scene would do much the same.
As for barricading himself in overnight, this would probably not dismiss possibilities of asking questions of those present in their home.

Brushy Bill was a liar, but so was pat garret who lied to preserve the reputation of Paulita Maxwel who was anybody's dog that would hunt with her, the truth is Billy was shot in the back during an intimate moment with her that left her with an abdominal scar, and later a daughter called Gringa Retardo, in English this means white with developmental disabilities, who would later commit suicide, After Billy was killed a blood stained mattress was burned the morning after in the yard.

Belle of Ft Sumner due to her being the unmarried daughter of Lucien Maxwell -- patriarch
of the local hispanic community....Paulita mentions girls being chaparoned by their mothers --- none more so than her whose mother became matriarch of the family ....
Paulita mentions a "girl" being born that looked much like Billy
and the mother being very proud of the fact but that the child only lived to see 8 years. .. I think Paulita wanted to depict -- as well as her knowledge of BTK ---
