But they decided if they could take control of the IRA they could make it smaller and more compact and centralize power to themselves which they did by 1983 and they used the IRA as a tool to give them leverage in political negotiations with the British which they did from around 1989 - 1998 when they signed the GFA.
Ireland cannot be independent while it is in the European Union. They are currently being ruled by the non democratic Technocrats in Brussels. The Irish people have no control over their own country. They are in a permanent minority. They have 14 Irish MEP's out of a total of 705 in the EU, so they have to follow the laws made by people who they didn't vote for and who do not live in Ireland. That is why they have to follow the migration policy of their masters in Brussels. All the fighting and killing of innocent people in Northern Ireland was for nothing.
No it wasn’t for nothing . Ireland is certainly not as enslaved by the EU as it is under the British. But the brits are doing what they’ve always done , divide and conquer. I remember my dad teaching me this as a child . Nothings changed.
The Irish government government is democratically elected and an equal member of the Council of Europe which guides policy, not "technocrats". We can leave whenever we want. The rules set in Brussels regulating trade occupy very little space in consciousness of most Irish people - rightly so. And those innocent people who died in Northern Ireland died for nothing, regardless of what happens in Brussels. The deaths were cruel, horrifying, and pointless.

Im a moderate unionist, my great grandparents fled the south of ireland for northern ireland post partition. The primary reason for conflict is not the british or irish government or unionists or nationalists it is religion and identity politics. If your beliefs are formed not from learning and your own conscience but rather from the background you are born into then they are formed poorly
You are wrong there, my friend. The reason for the conflict was rather simple. Inequality. No democracy. Unionists had absolute control of the economy of NI post partition. The republicans were persecuted. They did not have access to work or the vote. How could it not lead to conflict? My great grandfather was an Orangeman of some note from Belfast. The other side of my family is Catholic. It’s very clear what happened. Thankfully, we have peace (if not prosperity) in the north. And being an EU member, although not always ideal, affords security in the face of British leaders like Johnson and May. Yet to see what Sunak will be like.

Are we counting movies being made about people as a credit these days - if so Jack the Ripper and Adolf H must be in your “ inspiration and influence” hierarchy because there has been quite a few made about them. Actually there’s a connection when you count all the murdering that the terrorists got up to. No ! I’m afraid all the ‘ hunger strikers’ were part of a pointless exercise . All of them criminals , hence being in jail in the first place. All of them members of bigoted organisations who engaged in sectarian attacks. In fact such was their lust for blood that they killed people in other Republican organisations. Sometimes they just invited their unsuspecting close colleagues around and killed them. Occasionally they would announce they had made a mistake against an alleged “ informer” but if you base your “kangaroo court” system on torture then it’s not surprising that you get the wrong person. Whereas intellectuals with such literary skills as displayed in this post will be free to do the groupie thing to inflate their own levels of self esteem. Sad little lives living vicariously through the nihilist action of others. Others will look at sad wasted lives who were already rotting in prison simply fulfilling their destiny as “ sad wasted lives”. I think they did some research in Republican areas among kids and outside of perhaps the first one - nobody could name the hunger strikers - “ forgotten people who lived forgotten lives”. The IRA were beaten - riddled with informers and ludicrous amounts of their operations being stopped and providing a few more cellmates. The Police, Army and Intelligence services grinding them so hard that they sent a very famous surrender message. At least jail for those that didn’t cross the SAS or others was a way out. And don’t forget the Belfast graffiti “ We’ll never forget you ….. Jimmy Sands”.

I much prefer to elevate someone like John Hume, a true man of peace than any former members of the IRA. @@danielofinan5071 McGuiness & Adams, I believe, from all the books and evidence I've read, interviews I've watched and Republicans I've talked to that they decided the IRA could not beat the British, and they came to this conclusion as early as the mid-70s.
Ireland would have double the amount of people if it wasn't for the lacks immigration laws.

Great interview. Agree with all that has been said. Yet many knew, for years that we were being lead down a path instructed by a British idea . There’s a lot to be said in what you’re saying here in reference of relationships with Britain 🇬🇧 both now & in the past! However, don’t you think that a similar situation now holds then to be true regarding the present corresponding roles, actions, regulations & writs jointly of the EU🇪🇺, the ECJ & the ECHR today & also going into the future concerning Ireland’s political affairs? 🇮🇪 Hence, how do these then actually affect & influence the country’s sovereignty & real independence on an ongoing basis?
Importantly, at the most fundamental level, haven’t Ireland political elites just in effect, tacitly & insidiously exchanged British subsidiarity & influence for that of Brussels & its other WEF/Globalist backed satellite entities?? If so, then how does Ireland’s 🇮🇪 Nationalist communities, including the various & former IRA entities then reconcile & justify this situation, especially in light of the current migration crisis within the country?

Why did you think the long march through the institutions would nt affect the IRA?

I think I chose not to respond to your warped and crude nonsense earlier. And do you think people will remember the groupies who urged men on to kill themselves for absolutely nothing. “Hunger Striking for an expense account at Stormont “ - that’s the movie I want to see. “ Hunger Strike to make a statement in the 26 County Dail . “ Who could we get to star in that ?

@@andycross8385 That's highly arguable, highly. At the time of the 1916 Rising there was not majority or widespread support for any of those organizations. Neither was there majority support for the IRA's campaign in the 70's and 80's in Northern Ireland. I much prefer to elevate someone like John Hume, a true man of peace than any former members of the IRA. I am convinced for instance that if it was not for endless talking to the IRA over the years, that they may not have come to the realization that the war was at a stalemate. You do know that the uneasy peace has only been established since the IRA gave up political violence as a tactic? There is no fundamental difference between the current Peace Process and the Sunningdale Agreement in the 1980's. The major difference is that finally the British Government put on their big boy pants and did not cave to Unionist intransigence. Besides, the notion of killing your fellow countrymen in to a 32 country Republic is abhorrent to me.
