I don't think there are many on UA-cam that catch as frequently as you do, Senan. It's a testament to your fishing knowlege and skill. Well done! Garrett
Thanks Garrett, I reckon the more time anyone spends on the water the better the results will be, you get out of it what you put into it, I’ve always looked at fishing that way 😅🎣
Mepps No2 Silver and blue spots, good for seatrout and salmon too but in bigger sizes. Nice fishing. The gold and blue or red spots is also good on brighter days.
@@senanstanleyfishing There is another Mepp type lure but it's TK Lure Dande and at £2 for a size 2 and £2.30 for a size 3 these perform as good if not better. Also in silver and gold with red, blue, plain and Black Fury options, just sharing the info. At half the price and they flutter in the water giving a great thump on rotation. Tight lines my friend.
“Smoltifying” is the process name I’ve been told, unfortunately we don’t have any real numbers of salmon on this river, but it’s a good sign to see the little lads, there just be one or two around ☺️
Hi, nice session. I have a farmhouse with 32 acres of paddocks and some open land drainage didges and some pipes going to a small feeder river. But it is purely excess water drainage from otherwise water - saturated land. No fertilizer, manure or anything is put on these fields (we only have 2 horses for a hobby, so no need to overdoing it). A lot of large and small scale farming can indeed be bad, most farmers don't care what ends up in the ecosystem. The farm we bought has lots of plastic, glass and all sorts of crap dug in. Every time we want to plant a tree we dig out this stuff. Just for them to save a bit of money for not bringing it to a Civic Amenity Recycling Site. And there are 4 farms around us where old cars and vans are just dumped in a field waiting for the next owner to sort it out...
Hi pal, im sure there are some brilliant landowners, I just hate to see pipes going into rivers, I reported plenty of them last year, county council don’t seem to care nor do the fisheries board, yet they will pretend to care when there’s a mass fish kill of wild fish on a stretch. It’s just a pet peeve of mine, im just highlighting it whenever I come across it in the videos from now on. 👌
Great stuff senan. Had three on the indicator nymph yesterday on the upper bann, up north... Rivers well up.. almost unfishable. But not quite 😉😅 I'm going to look a spinning rod this afternoon.
Next session will be with the fly rod all going well, the amount of trout hammering flys off the top while I was spinning was crazy, there was lots of fly life, high temps has the river waking up finally ! Good stuff man !
Cracking wee trout. Was supposed to go yesterday but had a lot of rain up north rivers flooded and coloured. Your making me wish I should have went on Friday . Keep the good work Senan🎣🎣👍
It’s all a guessing game with that Irish weather 😂 some parts on the river here were pretty high, just lucky it wasn’t too dirty so I could see the footing for using the waiders, nothing worse than taking a slip 😁
I get what you mean about the pipe aswell. Seeing pipes in rivers, lakes and the the sea really annoys me especially after reading about the consequences in magazines. The fly fishing and fly tying magazine is one I’d recommend as they discuss this in great detail. There are many trying to prevent it but clearly it’s still significant.
I can’t say for certain what type of waste pipe it is but at the same time any sort of pipe going into a wild river is completely unacceptable in my eyes, the amount of fertiliser being washed in when raining isn’t fair on the wildlife in the river.
Seeing that pipe discharging into the river makes my blood boil. As if there aren't enough dramas with our waterways without that crap. Keep shaming them lad. Awesome video as usual. 🤙🏻
Hi Senan. Is there anywhere i can get a list of the set up you use in your trout videos. Just started back fishing after years away. My daughter and myself have only fished for pike so far but we are mad to try for trout and perch. We live in the galway area so if you could recommend some spinners, jerk baits etc that would be great. Love your videos and keep up the great work.
Hi! So basically I have this setup listed in the description of this video, but if you’re living in Galway the easiest thing to do would be call into wildhunters shop and show them the gear in my videos and the lads will be able to get it for you, they are very helpful, a lot of my gear comes from the wildhunter Galway and Athlone shops, you don’t need too much kit, the basic stuff will be more than enough to get back into it, spinners for trout I’d recommend Mepps, I don’t rate any other spinners. I’d Recommend rapala, siek wobblers, Sakura minnow, salmo minnow lures, and get a nice light set up, it’s more fun that way. ☺️👌
Class stuff senan that’s mad that that’s a salmon. You know a good fisherman when he calls the fish “beautiful” some fishermen I know call them runts when they’re that small 😂
Thanks Oscar! Ah fishing to me isn’t always about targeting the big fish there’s a lot more to it than just that, if I wanted big trout I would simply go onto the lake, these little rivers hold an abundance of small trout with the right tackle they will be hours of fun 👌😁 the 1-5 gram rod is perfect for these little guys, it would be no fun with a standard set up but the fly rod will be coming out next time , tricky casting under those trees but there’s always a chance 👌🎣
Thanks man! I used to worm fish as a kid, but I don’t like to do it anymore as it deep hooks the smaller fish at times no matter how fast you strike, just too awkward with doing the catch and release videos people get sensitive over bait fishing for trout pn UA-cam , would get a lot of compaints from the catch and release crowd, I try to just do lure and fly when it comes to trout fishing 🎣
Searched your videos for a larger river, this was perfect mate - curious, the issues I have with light setups and rivers with flow is they literally get dragged down the river with the flow and I am reeling against the flow for a large portion of the retrieve .... Should I just be retrieving a lot quicker? Should I be using heavier lures? Any advice would be useful mate 🙏🏻
Thank you, I always go for 6lb maxima fleurocarbon, it’s so strong, haven’t felt the need to go any lighter it’s quite thick at 0.22 diameter but the trout don’t mind
Great video again Senan. What go pro are you favouring these days ? I'm due an upgrade myself, and heard a few mixed reports on some of the go pro models
Thank you, I have a few different ones from the 9 up to the 11, there’s honestly no difference in quality from the 8 up to the newest model, basically the same to be honest
Hi Senan, I'm looking into a pair of waders I'm just wondering if there's any pairs you would recommend under €100. I have a pair but they are very baggy on me.
Hey Ben, I’ve been through a few pairs of cheap chest waiders, Shakespeare do a set for about €50, the ones I have at the minute are kinetic they were €50 also. To be honest waiders will always get damaged or leak at some stage, so I refuse to spent a lot of money on them, if one set does me a season it’s super lucky, these kinetic ones are baggy looking but if you’re in the water it really doesn’t matter, the fish don’t mind what you look like ;)
I use daiwa ninja 1500, Savage Gear SG4-AG 2500, also have the newest range of Wychwood Agitator reel - 2000 size.. all excellent paired with ultra light rod.
@@senanstanleyfishingWhat I found is if the lure or spinner catches some weed/moss etc. it completely ruins the motion and makes it sit closer to the surface 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t name any of the rivers I fish, the power of the internet can ruin these small places. 👍 I’d say it’s a mixed bag as regards fly v spinning regulations in Ireland.
@@senanstanleyfishing That's a good point, Senan. I only noticed that on your About info after I posted my comment. I won't mention where I fish, but it's generally all fly fishing on three well known rivers through five different clubs. Only one club allows 'all methods' to try to encourage younger people to start out, but it is hotly debated at almost every AGM. As a kid, I used spinners and lures to catch trout and pike and worms for eels. I then moved onto exclusively fly fishing for trout. Spinning is a great way to get kids interested if it's allowed. But your videos have sparked an interest in trying some spinning again myself. :-) Keep up the great videos.
@TomOMara absolutely, I enjoy all styles of fishing myself too. Ultralight spinning with the correct tackle, low gram casting weight rods with loose drag reels, do very low damage to trout, especially if the angler is willing to crush off the barbs. I try to show the younger anglers the best way to release the fish with wet hands, there’s a lot of people getting into fishing; so having something friendly for them to base their fishing off, is a huge help to them. I’m not a fan of the worm fishing as it deep hooks the smaller trout, but that’s also how I started fishing 20 years ago. I’m keeping the Channel to fly and lure only, no bait.

Great Video, I just subscribed. Love your enthusiasm. I share the frustrations about pipes entering water courses, crazy stuff in this day and age!

Mepps No2 Silver and blue spots, good for seatrout and salmon too but in bigger sizes. Nice fishing. The gold and blue or red spots is also good on brighter days.
Awesome lures, Mepps spin better than any other spinner on the market, they nailed it with their design.

What knot do you use with braid to lure Senan?
Double uni knot mostly ☺️
@senanstanleyfishing thanks mate. I've had a couple of knots slip 😖
I’d use a palomar knot to a tiny swivel, and just tie your fleuro onto the swivel, you will never lose another lure ☺️👍
Sorry mate, I'm finding it hard to picture where you mean. Do you have a video of this, even a short video on tiktok?
Sometimes while retrieving i find the lure/spinner wants to skip along/pull up from the surface of the water. Why is that?
Is this when you are casting downstream or upstream ?
